I saw them down in Bayfront Park (Miami, FL) in ‘93. They were and still are my favorite band, and they came down here just weeks before my birthday, so of course I was stoked as a pig in shit! I also later saw a shitty band (Saliva, or Slither, or one of those bands…) cover them as part of a 60-band concert, and it wasn’t anywhere near the same experience. They even started complaining because someone discarded a plastic water bottle in their general direction. They threatened to leave, so we all booed them off the stage. Good times. LOL!

An incredible document. Just a bunch of guys thrashing around in the basement making music like thousands of others have done. But history would soon take a turn. Thank you Kurt Krist and Chad. And Dave too of course.
I saw them in Montreal in a small bar hole in the wall place before they were big. They sounded terrible and we thought we'd never see them again. I spoke to Kurt after I asked him his name and he was actually a mellow guy. I had no idea they were going to get big but you never know!
This reminds me of my childhood,(I'm still basically a kid, I'm a teenager, but whatever) because I would always be in the basement whenever my dad had bandpractice, and I'm still there whenever his friends come over and they play. I just love the feel of the sound waves and the perfection of the little imperfections. Cold soda, electric guitar like this, I just love it.
I can't believe how good this sounds on a camcorder. Kurt singing against the wall like that...fucking amazing....and damn, I just got to their cover of Immigrant Song...wow., Kurt's scream. This is great.

the greatest thing is that 4 years later they would be the biggest band in the world. and they sounded exactly same. they only thing that changed was that he faced 50K people, not the wall in his friend's mom's house

A friend told me listen to this band theyre gonna be huge and i listened and was amazed they're songs so simple and honest. It really changed the way I looked at guitar, the chord changes so different from what I had known. kurt wasn't afraid to be dissonant or melodioc or both on the one song. He's one musician that I really miss.
WOW-! Nirvana..RAW....I enjoy this as seeing/hearing them before the crush of stardom changed their lives...Chad Channing is hella- impressive on drums,Krist is being a goof, and Kurt is focused !!

Singing into the wall, I’m pretty sure he was doing that for the sound. So he could hear himself, small space and no monitors. Maybe 18 months later Nirvana played the VFA (80’x50’? Very small space) 9’in Kennewick. Some dude stripped naked and tried to crowd surf, pretty sure he was on shrooms or LSD. Wasn’t even 4 songs into their set. 40 years ago, the Screaming Trees might have opened, because they just had a song released on a local compilation CD that broke big. Plus the Singles soundtrack was coming out. The cops were right there looking for an excuse and booted everyone. Not long after Kennewick would have stroked it to get them back for a big show
Caray, cómo se inicia una banda , quien hubiese pensado que dejarían un gran legado musical. El éxito es una durísima losa que si no sabes cómo cargarla te puede aplastar….
the most amazing thing about this to me is the song about a girl made it from krists moms house to freakin mtv unplugged i mean could you imagine that?

+Dina Prevele It's so odd to think, "...littel did these boys know how they would change rock music forever." They never saw the rolling train that was heading their way. It hurts to think what music would be like today if Kurt were still alive. Part of me thinks they would have eventually called it quits and Kurt would've been another Axel and another part of me thinks they would've just imploded. Who know's?
Shit, I am so lame. This makes me feel like crying. I miss the Puget Sound back in those days so much./ My husband's band played at some hotel lounge in Aberdeen... it was called something about a shipwreck I think. We had to ride from Tacoma in the back of the guitar player's truck for them to play there. We went to a few house parties in Aberdeen because there was nothiiiiinnnng to do there if you were not over 21, except bug people to drive to Westport with you and sign n buy codeine cough syrup. ;) and go to lame parties. At least in Tacoma we had Community World Theater!
Ok guys he faces the wall for the sound effect. Not bc he couldnt handle fame. He wasnt famous yet when this video was made. He was among friends here and was not facing the walk due to being uncomfortable and not wanting to look at anyone as everyone keeps saying. . Why does everyone analysis Kurt as being someone who hated his music and band. Fame and the industry combined with druga changed everything. He loved music and art, he hated the industry's way of changing everything they worked for, and didnt want to be what anyone wanted him to be just himself. and was sick of hurting and needing heroine just to function. That's what he said not my opinion.
If you do ur research you will see thats why the lyrics are on the wall he could have had the lyrics in front if thats all. Its for the sound, not my wor . Ill post the interview i read to find this out myself.
That's amazing. Kurt said he couldn't play guitar "well." But it sure looked like he could at the start of Love Buzz. And they sound like a force of nature. I always liked Big Long Now, got me through some tough times. But they didn't seem to play it that often. Now this video is Rock + Roll history.

***** Let's just say, you needed a really good ear to see the potential in '88. But even early on you can see in Kurt's technique and approach it's something not everyone has... Like he was singing to the wall the whole time. Like he didn't want all the eyes on him ruining his performance.
Thanks for sharing this video I really appreciate it. It was awesome hearing some of their earlier songs with another drummer and hearing Kurt’s voice so raw and young
This is some really special footage, before all the pressures and trappings of fame and addiction. I can totally relate to this sense of nostalgia. My band used to rehearse in my parents living room, when we first started, in 1996. Luckily my neighbour was very very deaf, at least he was after we finished 😂. Those early days were great tho, full of excitement of maybe one day making it. Fame and fortune didnt come knocking for us, even after releasing two albums, but it was such an exciting time.
this is great. a real gem. a look at the early stages of one of the great bands in rock history. Kurt is singing at the wall to cut down on the echo. RIP Kurt cobain !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol you think the sound is coming from the microphone? That microphone is connected to speakers I am assuming and him singing up against the wall would not have that effect because he is singing theough a p.a.

Such an incredibly inaccurate statement…Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s riding a skateboard…I’ve never known a time in my life that music “like this” didn’t exist…
@@johnfountain5619 look up top 10 songs in 1988. Tell me one that came anywhere close to sounding like Nirvana.
The greatest band of all time started in a living room Hell Yea!!!!!! Let's us know if your mom would like to book our band in her living room!!!! Worldwide mom's living room tour!!!!! :)
Umair Az Hahaha that made me laugh way too hard!
Eamon Quinlan me too :)
I'm pretty sure it was a room above her salon. She'd let them practice and hang out there. Very cool.
I went to the EMP (Experience music project) in Seattle yesterday and they had the bass that Krist is playing here, along with a lot of old nirvana instruments and memorabilia. It was awesome.
This is Such an AWESOME cut in time!!!! They sound Damn Good! I"M so sorry for KURT!!! I love you Kurt, youre the reason my fingers keep hurting.....R.I.P.
When they played "About a Girl" I almost cried.
Gotta admire the integrity of these guys. At a time when hair metal was king they stayed true to a punk meets Zep meets the Beatles format. True innovators!
They weren’t any of those! They were alternative!!!
@@ZYGTropicals They were a bit of all of those and a lot of other things, and their own tragic collision of chaos.
What? “punk meets Zep” stop that foolishness.
@@tomread8748 lol!!! That’s just pure craziness!!! Super funny though! 😆
@@ZYGTropicals Yeah, they had a song called Aero Zeppelin for no reason and covered a few of their songs by accident, as well as Kurt saying he grew up listening to the Beatles and their songs were the first ones he played along to. Totally crazy.
I know that this has been posted over a decade ago but it just showed up in my feed. Wow, this is pure gold. Thank you so much to the channel creator for posting this! 🤟❤❗❗❗
Kurt is such an amazing singer and Krist is absolutely incredible as well, wish i could have been alive to see Nirvana live at least once :/
I was lucky to see them Halloween night Dayton ohio 1994!
Good times. LOL!
i was babby when curt and shotgun met. nirvana is still the most important band to forming my musical tastes to this day tho.
Ya dead??...
@@jswynn75 considering he died in April 94 I think you might be getting your dates mixed up
couldn't more sic than that! nirvana my favourite band!
The most soloing I've ever heard Kurt do... AMAZING
He was a better guitar player than he led people to believe. Playing fancy just wasn’t his style. He could have though if he had wanted to.
His soloing was atrocious!!
He made great songs though!
@@JRoss80 not quite! He didn’t have the skills to play lead. He only knew how to play barre chords and attempted solos on a single string!
He couldn’t solo any scales, he couldn’t tap any solos, he couldn’t even alternate pick across multiple strings and couldn’t even sweep pick. He didn’t know a single bit of music theory, modes or sequences. His guitar skills were far and few, but he was able to still make great music with what little he was able to do on a guitar! And it sounded good!!!
@@ZYGTropicals he could alternate between strings and didnt only solo on one string.
@@ZYGTropicals Not correct. He definitely could have played decent lead if he had put the effort into it.
Big things have small beginnings--LONG LIVE NIRVANA!
The amazing thing about Chad, at least in the interviews I have seen, He is not in the slightest bit bitter and has nothing but good things to say, especially about Kurt
Just takes me back to my own band practices back in the 80's. Just doing it for the love of it and a handful of friends.
How did the band do?
@@Rondawwg That band actually did ok. It was a progressive metal band. We made two albums and did some touring. And then I went on to be a hired gun type touring drummer.

Been A Nirvana Die-Hard fan eversince My Teen age Years back in 1990...Bleach And Incesticide Will always be My Favorite From Them...Thank You Kurt and the Rest of Nirvana for the Sound and Music of My Generation...
An incredible document. Just a bunch of guys thrashing around in the basement making music like thousands of others have done. But history would soon take a turn. Thank you Kurt Krist and Chad. And Dave too of course.
The Zepplin cover was a golden moment. This type of LoFi experience totally embodies what Nirvana is and was. Thank you for sharing!
Woww What a Gem of a Footage.. Thank you so much for Sharing
I think I see a can of beans on the ground...the inspiration for their most iconic song.
That sounds pretty cool 😍
I can't believe how good this sounds on a camcorder. Kurt singing against the wall like that...fucking amazing....and damn, I just got to their cover of Immigrant Song...wow., Kurt's scream. This is great.
That cover of Immigrant Song rules, but Goddamn that version of Big Long Now is incredible. So perfect. Love the incubator vibe of this whole video. Thanks for sharing!
Dear God thank you I've been trying to figure out what song that was and had to come here and see your comment to figure it out. And yeah it's incredible. Kurt roars like a lion.
So crazy Big Long Now didn't appear until Incesticide 4 years later in 1992. I like this crude live version, it is how it was originally conceived
Incredible that we have this footage…. Unreal man
6 years later they be on top of the world. 🎸.
the greatest thing is that 4 years later they would be the biggest band in the world. and they sounded exactly same. they only thing that changed was that he faced 50K people, not the wall in his friend's mom's house
I used to be a big Nirvana fan..well,still I am..and today, this is the greatest find about this band...and this is like watching The Hobbit after watching all the Lord of The Rings....
Rest in peace Kurt !
*now...what is this heat around my eyes?...
who that hell dares to vote down on this video. wtf... this is just too good.. it's a piece of a beautiful and tragic history, still awesome and relevant now and for years to come. thank you for sharing!
Gotta love the early Grunge scene
I love how the sound is like beautiful mud.❤
A friend told me listen to this band theyre gonna be huge and i listened and was amazed they're songs so simple and honest. It really changed the way I looked at guitar, the chord changes so different from what I had known. kurt wasn't afraid to be dissonant or melodioc or both on the one song. He's one musician that I really miss.
What kind of music did you listen to before?? Nirvanas chord changes are extremely common
$616 in 1989 money is about $200,000 if adjusted for inflation
Yeah-gotta admire guys who can pare it down: from Bo Diddley to The Fall to The Birthday Party and Nirvana.
@@ShinyFlakesShinyFlakes Probably The Grateful Dead, lol.
@@brutallyremastered4255I loved both. Kurt wasn't playing Weir chords, and Jerry used chords everyone could play.
I love how Love Buzz starts in the beginning
WOW-! Nirvana..RAW....I enjoy this as seeing/hearing them before the crush of stardom changed their lives...Chad Channing is hella- impressive on drums,Krist is being a goof, and Kurt is focused !!
What a couple mom I loved Nirvana still today Kurt was a big loss for the music industry but Dave Grohl started the Foo Fighter’s and Pat Smear is still with Dave is a great drummer all around great musician a band that will play in a concert and play for over 2 hours most bands don’t play that long it’s really terrible that Dave lost Kurt and now his best friend Taylor which was also an all around great musician if you haven’t seen the tribute you should try to see it it will go down in music history and very heart warming in my opinion Shane Hawkins was one of the awesome tribute to his father 😢I cried the whole time truly beautiful
Insane that 3-4 years later they r the biggest band ever
the most amazing thing about this to me is the song about a girl made it from krists moms house to freakin mtv unplugged
i mean could you imagine that?
Tracy Marander can
Love that they have the debut album by an all-time great power trio leaning up against the wall, Blue Cheer 'Vincebus Eruptum' (1968)!
This is history right here. I’m not even really a nirvana fan but I know they changed music as we know it and will go down in history as one of the the greatest bands ever. That’s why this video is so important
This is the cutest damn thing I've ever seen, its like the fabulous stains except with guys- love the Blue Cheer album in the corner. Kick ass Zeppelin cover, DEWD! Aaah, back when strobe lights were cool...such super powered times. Thanks for the memories :)~
Who know's?
Wow on your finding the Blue Cheer album!!! Punk pioneers
Oui, c'est Vincebus Eruptum de Blue Cheer 1968, je crois, j'avais le 45 tours de l'époque avec "Summertime Blues et Out of focus " souvenirs...
Man that guy that threw that paper ball at Kurt in the beginning has great accuracy. LOL
That is the guy with the moustache dancing Mr. Moustache and definitely not Krist’s brother. He looks latin.
My hub and I used to visit his Folks in Hoquium Wa. Kurt was practicing in house behind them.
Damn they sounded pretty tight even in the early days
Ok guys he faces the wall for the sound effect. Not bc he couldnt handle fame. He wasnt famous yet when this video was made. He was among friends here and was not facing the walk due to being uncomfortable and not wanting to look at anyone as everyone keeps saying. . Why does everyone analysis Kurt as being someone who hated his music and band. Fame and the industry combined with druga changed everything. He loved music and art, he hated the industry's way of changing everything they worked for, and didnt want to be what anyone wanted him to be just himself. and was sick of hurting and needing heroine just to function. That's what he said not my opinion.
heroin is what brought him down...
you have it absolutely right. cheers.
CHARLES GOODMAN thanks i am a huge fan of Nirvana and Kurts!
ashley stone Me too.
I'm really liking Big Long Now!
Wow, this is so interesting...seeing how they started off in a small, dark room and then becoming one of the most influential bands ever!
Bleach was a big stepping stone. Not in sales but in foundation.
Makes me emotional and love how intense Kurt is even in practice
Kurt never changed. Whether it was 3 people, 30, 000, practice or live, he was expressing himself , his art truthfully.
According to the date on the video, this is exactly 30 years ago. At that time, who could have known?
12:45 pure kurt . . . legend. Everyone goes on about how he should still be here and all ... he should, BUT he was here and gave us all what he did, thanks to him, a real inspiration and musically gifted genius

I love how Kurt is singing to the wall!!!!!!
LOVE THE GARAGE BAND SOUND!! This is where the MAGIC happened!!
So glad I stumbled upon this video, was a huge fan of nirvana for being saw raw and grunge, just what I wanted to hear at the time in my life, now 58 and can't get enough Cobain RIP, imagi e the thing he would've accomplished
One of my favorite Nirvana performances
This is the best video I've seen of nirvana in my life thank you for the upload, everyone that's been on a band has done this and it is the best feeling when you jam with your band, but watching Fucking Nirvana to do it, it's priceless.
Wow @ Nirvana covering the Immigrant Song. Had no idea they ever played that, what a great performance. Kurt really hit those high notes!
This is so good and they’re just Kids. Born to do it. Wish it was still 1987. RIP Kurt.
Sick !! What a time for them!!
At the early stages of creating, genius and pure greatness !!! 🎸🥁🎵👌✌️

they're like, they suck!
Aaron Elias It's called practice dumb A$$!
***** Let's just say, you needed a really good ear to see the potential in '88. But even early on you can see in Kurt's technique and approach it's something not everyone has... Like he was singing to the wall the whole time. Like he didn't want all the eyes on him ruining his performance.

piece of history
When his mom was listening to this she was probably like "wtf are they doing their music sucks and they will never be big." 3 years later dropped one of the greatest albums of all time
"3 years later dropped one of the greatest albums of all time"

They didn't drop anything they released the album
@@abelmontalvo4052 yeah, they had to be holding it when they released it?
@@violentshemp7776 no they were not holding it they took it to the stores and released it
The epitome of Mr Literal Guy. Albums DROP when they’re released. It’s been the term for decades. Get a clue or if you want to be grammar police go be a teacher & make a difference in some kids life. Don’t be a dick teacher though. Something tells me…..
I wonder if Kurt saw a wall or a crowd then...but most likely a wall.
Hahaha
He's singing to the wall to project his voice because he didn't have a microphone
Well he had a mic, just probably a better projection
idk, Kurt was a weird dude
He had the lyrics on a peice of paper on the wall so he looked at that to sing to so he didnt fuck up and forget lyrics half way through the show
that was a setlist and the wall technique is used for sound and to try to get used to being the frontman
Wall screams
walls scream back

the thing I like best about this vid is back then they had no idea they were months away from becoming the most influential and groundbreaking band in the last 30 or 40 years. They were just young kids playing in the basement having a good time.
As Krist said in an interview “grunge became a viable commodity”
