Villagers is one of those games I believe will end up in pretty high demand, and has a real shot at being an evergreen title. It's got the right mix of easy to teach & enough game play to keep veterans engaged. And it feels like its own game and not a remake of something else. The only reason I didn't put it in my games to start a collection video, was that it wasn't out yet.
Some people have suggested I do more "ratings" or clear endorsements/condemnations in my vids. I probably won't and will just leave them for the pinned comment. Does that work for you?
Numbers and ratings often lose sight of the difference and subtly in games and how they operate. Distinction and understanding suffer when the goal is a rating, not to say that ratings are always bad. Rockpapershotgun has a badge for bestest best and otherwise do not rate.
I however would say that if a game is trash then it should be condemned, be that Tops Trumps or something similarly vapid and useless. Not enough time in the world to waste on terrible games.
Yeah, i'm personally against numerical ratings as they strip nuance out of a game review, as people start quibbling about the score. I've lost track of the number of times peoples arguments for or against a game boiled down to "but dice tower approved it" or "SU&SD endorsed it".
I want people to make up their own minds based on what is in the video. Not hammer everyone into my way of thinking.
But yeah, if a game is one I really feel strongly about, either way, i'll mention it here.
What I appreciate of this channel is the remarkable blend of precise review and personal voice in just a few minutes. Your short videos have made me more self-aware of my own preferences in board gaming than many a rambling 30 min review. By eschewing score and recommendation, one gets very quickly at the heart of the matter: would *I* love this game?
Nailed it, its not about if I like the game, its whether you will. And I like to leave that decision in your hands.
I think a lot of reviewers, and not just board games but all media, act from a place where they think their audience needs to be led to a decision. I don't personally like being told what i should think or feel about a game. So I try not to do it myself.
I like you keep the 3 minutes clean and focused on what the game is as now. But you could consider a second short video for your personal opinions about the game.
You're by far the most helpful and concise board game reviewer I've found on TH-cam. Good job! Thanks for your help.
Thank you. I appreciate that
I like 3 min board games so much that I watch the full advertisment.
Kidding aside (but I really do watch the ads), I love how these breakdowns give a sense of the mechanics. I may never play some of these games due to time constraints but this channel is a gem.
I'm actually considering my first ever Patreon, although I should worry about my schooling first.
Your schooling is definitely more important. But I really appreciate the comment :)
@@3MBG I went to law school before starting engineering and that was pretty much a waste of money. Would've been better to take the $40k and started a mini painting company, a t-shirt company, or board games review channel.
Construction helped me pay it back but I don't know that engineering is all that amazing. I meet plenty of engineers working at the mall serving me ice cream... The modern Western economy is wack.
That it is. My work is feast or famine. I'm either desperately looking for work, or doing quite nicely. (Communications and marketing contractor)
A little late to the party but thanks for this video! To explain the game in 3 minutes will be extremely useful to get this on the table with my playgroup.
Small note to clarify basic builders: they DO NOT count within your build limit, and the video appears to suggest that a hayer + thatcher is two builds. So the player who builds the thatcher is still allowed one more build.
Oh, we clearly played that one wrong. Good spot and thank you
You are wonderful as always :) - Excited to see the games you cover this year. This seems like it would be fun. Simple and yet deep enough to keep people engaged.
...and - was it..?
I felt it plays a little like Oh my Goods, but a bit simpler and cleaner.
The music change threw me a tad, lol
I was hoping someone would call that out :)
I ran into this today at a local store. I will buy it on your recommendation.
Hope you like it, i always get nervous when people say stuff like this
I only have space for one small game while travelling - Should I get Oaxaca or Villagers? Any votes?? :)
Solo? I'd probably go with oaxaca
@@3MBG I meet people while traveling so always like to have some game on me. Thanks for the suggestion! :)
Reminds me of Machi Koro with less RNG.
Well, no RNG for starters.
I can see some similarities, but its a cut above Machi-koro in my mind
@@3MBG that's good to hear. I like Machi Koro but there's way too much RNG for my group's liking.
Omg, this is gonna take a while. Can’t find villagers in any store within my country 😑😑😑.
It isn't in stores yet. It should be arriving to KS backers, and stores who backed it in a few weeks. With the retail coming a month later around June.
Oh I seeeee! Thanks for the info! Gonna keep a lookout! ✌🏻
