Huge "hair metal" fan here... and I just want to say THE BEST concert I ever went to was Nelson, in Nashville. I know, I know, not heavy metal.... but holy cats, these guys can sing better live than on the album! That almost never happens. Also, talk about generous... they played for two straight hours, and then came back out and played encores, then came back again and played a song they wrote in honor of their dad. What a completely enjoyable experience - so glad I got to be there!
These two make awesome music and treat their fans better than any other performers I have ever seen. They get it - they have never forgotten where they came from and they have their priorities straight. They are so talented and fun to see live! Check them out if you get a chance. I am going on 30 years of being a fan. Stay positive guys and be proud of all the joy you bring to the world.
Big surprise to come across this interview, and even more surprising to watch the whole thing. Great interview! Much continued success to Gunnar and Matt!
WOW !! You guys are Right on !! Truth words are being spoken here ! I am so glad i listened to this Thank You for you and your honesty and your journey.,.much love and Respect
What a fascinating interview. Gunnar and Matthew definitely take after the Nelson side of the family from their description of their Dad's side and their Mom's side. Their knowledge of Hollywood and the music scene is so deep and they are so good at sharing it, I hope they write a book.
Hello from Australia 🇦🇺 Always loved Nelson these brothers are so talented but more importantly authentic and true to themselves. I was always loving hard rock and melodic metal bands growing up during the late 70’s - 80’s but not the top 40 or the MTV hits! The bands I liked and listened to weren’t that well known out of the genre so not considered mainstream - bands like Winger, White Lion, Enuff Z’Nuff, Cheap Trick, Heart and of course Nelson 🙋🏻♀️💯🫶
A great band Nelson is one of my favorites hearing Gunnar n Matthew Nelson explain their good n bad experiences they have went through making the record CDs a great thorough interview she is good Nelson is great rock music.😎🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🌹🌹❤️❤️🏋️🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🎸🎸🌹
Matthew and Gunnar are so refreshing and very very real here. My goodness, I didn't realize they were originally going to be on the flight where their father was lost. I am so grateful they are STILL HERE with us and truly do wish their father was as well. Thank you guys for being so open, kind, and gracious!!! Much love and many more good things to you and your whole family and friends!!!
What a great interview, it's refreshing to see an open and honest dialog with thought out questions and very honest answers. It also revealed so much that MANY folks did not know about the band and what they went through as kids as well as artist. You can also tell they come from the generation of little to no excuses, my generation. Just because you are dealt an unfair hand, don't sit back and give up, you continue to fight. I look forward to hearing their album.
I love these two. So smart, talented, forthright and undeniably superb musicians and songwriters. I was lucky to know them casually back in the day. Humble, fun, nice guys. Old souls full of wisdom. What a great lesson on tenacity.
Just heard these guys on a short interview with Eddie Trunk radio show while they were on the On the Blue Cruise recently. They were interesting … but so glad I found this longer interview. Loved it. Thank you.
I am very jazzed to see these guys doing well and being happy and healthy and productive still.. I remember defending them back in the day to all of the jealous wanna be untalented so called metal heads that couldn't write a real song if their lives depended on it.... Just disgusting jealous people so Kudos to the brothers who are proving the cream always rises to the top.... Their dad's music was in our home growing up and and I am happy to see them keeping the music alive....
Great interview. I only started listening to this album a few days ago and I am loving it. Morning noon and night. Can’t stop. I love that I have some new favourite songs that may be 30 years old. Weird. ❤❤❤
First off this was an awesome interview & I have been a Nelson fan my entire life starting out with Ricky Nelson playing throughout my childhood because my mom was a big time Ricky Nelson fan & she's the same age as him! - Watched "Square Pegs" with Tracy Nelson & got into the twins when I was 18 just as I was graduating High School in 1989.. I have never strayed from the Twins & when they disappeared mid-90s never knew what happened to them until I found their second album, & yes I live in Washington state near Seattle so yeah, I'm guilty of & I did get into the whole "Grunge" scene but I never gave up on the Twins! And I know Gunnar probably won't like this but my two favorite bands are 👱♀️Nelson👱♀️ & 🎸Nirvana.. - Always have been always will be!! I have met Gunnar & Matthew 4 times so far starting in 1991 at their A.T.R. concert in Seattle & 👐's down still the best concert I've ever been too❣ L💞ve U 👱♀️Guy's👱♀️ Till The Day I Die....
Brilliance flows from these increadably honest smart brothers! Full of integrity, knows theirs business & life, better than any band person ever! As a fan for so many years, wish they were my personal friends, wow!
Glad I bumped into this video after randomly watching Love & Affection MV on a rainy Thursday afternoon. I love the song when it came out & still in my throwback playlist. Never knew about their story (I don't live in the US & no internet back then), so this is new & what a journey they have! So glad to know they're still creating music
Luv this interview, thanks for sharing. My mom and I always liked listening to them all the time and I enjoyed as a young adult. Thanks for all the beautiful music ❤❤ would love to see them perform sometime.
It's very cool to hear the type of knowledge that is needed to be successful in the music industry. For the fans it might be just looking good and/or sounding good but, there apparently is so much more to it!
Wow, this was a very insightful interview! Thank you so much for doing this interview. I remember Nelson's music in the 90s being discredited and downplayed as being privileged because of their Dad, which I'm glad to hear Gunnar & Matthew set the record straight about that. I had the "After the Rain" album on cassette tape originally and was immediately impressed with their upbeat songs. I liked many of the hard rock bands at the time. Skid Row was another favorite of mine at that time. I prefer melodic hard rock bands. I agree with Gunnar that it is not easy categorizing Nelson's music, but that's a good thing. I consider Nelson to be a high energy melodic hard rock band. That's really cool they were chosen to write songs for the Bill & Ted movie even though they weren't properly credited, but maybe now they will be. I became a music journalist in 1995 after graduating from college with a journalism degree in 1993. I was very into the riot grrl bands at the time and started a music column featuring women musicians. However the bands I love the most are bands like Nelson and Bon Jovi that have uplifting, inspirational messages in their songs which are timeless. I have been revisiting Nelson's songs and now see even more depth to their music and performances. Gunnar and Matthew are inspirational because of how strongly they believe in making a heartfelt connection with people. I can see that in their early 1990's shows and videos. It is even more impressive today that they continue to care about music and their fans as much as they do, and that they can perform a dressed-down less flashy version just as well as they did in 1990. However I am very glad they chose to go with the dressy Headbanger's Ball look, because I was very drawn to musicians who dressed uniquely rather than the very dull shoegazer flannel band style. I have always felt that musicians and bands who have a fashionable look bring more excitement and a higher level of energy to their performances like Dokken & Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy, etc. Dokken is one of my favorite hard rock bands that I would say Nelson is somewhat similar to, in regards to excellent, memorable melodic rock songs. Ozzy and his bandmates are incredibly amazing melodic rock musicians as well, even if darker in tone. Ozzy is still a phenomenal melodic singer even in his elder years. I am so grateful and happy that the Nelson twins are still making music and performing. Now is the time that people need that upbeat, uplifting sunshine rock "More Than Ever!" :) Duran Duran as well has been rockin' it with upbeat, uplifting tunes on their past couple albums. "Tonight United" is a great upbeat dance anthem song. "Pressure Off" is another fantastic upbeat song. Very groovy! DD also believes strongly in writing songs that will uplift their fans. Both Nelson & DD have seen several decades of significant changes in the world and music industry. Growing up in the 80s with all the fabulous diversity of unique styles of music was a very fun time. It is sad to me to hear that the music industry execs chose to promote a different style of darker music so they wouldn't have to pay alot of money to the top artists. They did a disservice to those artists. However many bands like Nelson and Duran Duran proved their talent over time. Thank you again for this in-depth interview. I hope Nelson does get their book published! Glad to hear they created the Greatest Hits and Near Misses album! :) I look forward to seeing them on tour again!
I can honestly say there are no words for me to explain my admiration for Gunnar and Matthew. These two seem so down to earth guys you would ever want to be like. I have such a high level of respect for them both. They haven't let their fame go to their heads. You never hear any negative stories in the press or tabloids about them with arrests, drugs, or prostitutes.. They really have it together and I do sincerely hope and wish always the best for them both in personal and professional lives.. They play "REAL" music, in a way, kind of like their legendary dad. They do write and make good music!!!
As each day passes, I can see how money hungry the world is. It’s sad. Last December I ended up deleting my Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok accounts to get away from all social media. That also included tv. I’m just now starting to look at TH-cam again. Hopefully things will get better.
I just thought oh it's those blonde boys that have that beautiful sound. Wasn't expecting to now admire them for being so grounded. They have a good vibe. I was merely looking up their acoustic versions.
One of the best interviews I have seen.I remember seeing them on MTV singing "Love and Affection".I thought they were using their dad's name to sell records.
The Nelson brothers are the same age as me. 1967 was a great year to born. I really liked and like the song "Love And Affection". Great hit song! I actually think they were too good looking to gain any respect in the changing music industry from pop/ glam rock to grunge. They were right in between and just too squeaky clean.
I like what they said about grunge was more "inexpensive" to produce. A guy like Eddie Van Halen, or Yngwie Malmsteen, or Vito Bratta, there are only a few of them. So those guys could command money. In grunge, you only had to know power chords, so just about anyone on a street corner could play it. Therefore, the endless supply of potential stars drives prices down.
Is this it? Is this the end of Nelson? Are they going to do more studio recordings?! I hope so! And l.p.s! PLUS hopefully they way over record with alternate versions of songs, various mixes, and re-recordings, too!
Nelson has a few greatest albums already, So why put another one out. Why can't we just put a live dvd out. That's one thing I would like to see them do
Tell me is their best ballad for me And that's saying a lot because they've got quite a few Five o'clock plane and All shook up and Right before your eyes are standouts We don't own this world in George Lynch's Sacred Groove was superb as well .
There is sure no question that even though well deserved these boys hated their Mother. I have 2 Narcissistic kids so I can relate. If anyone out there is struggling in any kind of Narcissistic relationship get out it will never get better. They will only make your life miserable.

I have always loved them and have a new respect for them. They are very articulate and loved the interview
They are such mature and wise men who stand on their life principles which is why they’re still here.
I love Nelson. They are super talented. Their father Rick Nelson would be so proud of them.

They are very talented great Harmony they inherited from their dad they have something in common with Julian Lennon

Does anyone else ever noticed Gunnar is always on Matt’s right/our left?
Totally, ha!
Nelson has a few greatest albums already,

Why can't we just put a live dvd out.
That's one thing I would like to see them do
F the big establishment, you guys rock, your gonna be ok

Can someone explain the joke?
😂🎨🏃🏃🏃🤱🙏
I would have sued for defamation.
they had no lead guitar... pity
Grunge was engineered to destroy Michael Jackson.
Hearing Gunnar call someone a narcissist is like AOC calling Bernie Sanders a Socialist
This comment is out of line. I guess haters are going to hate.
Rule number 4 should be: Never cut your eyebrows
No,the world is not watching. You are not "a lot to take."
Ah…a troll. I never usually comment on these things, but considering how terrific all the other comments are in contrast to yours- Can I mark it down that you aren’t a fan ‘Jerome’? Noted! Counterpoint to your quip: in 1990-91: we sold Millions of albums, had 4 #1 MTV videos, a #1 Billboard hit and 6 other top 40 hits, a 2 year headlining World tour that was in the top 5 tours in the world, and were the #1 grossing merchandise act in the US. I think any intelligent person would say ‘the world was watching’ a little bit, no? Well I think we passed the audition. And yes- I’m hindsight, our image WAS a bit much to take for some and I lived it- but it worked. I think I know what I’m talking about- I was underneath all that hair. Man- I just don’t know how I’ll ever get over the trauma of a troll’s vitriol! LOL. Well you just have a great day ‘Jerome’. As they say in Nashville where I live: “Bless Your Heart”(That’s Southern for ‘kiss my ass’)- Love Always- Matt Nelson (aka: Gunnar’s brother/ the guy on the right:)
Right on
@@matthewnelson1229 Well said Matt! So tired of mean spirited trolls always trying to tear down someone else's success and talent.
Love the response!!! 😆 it's actually very Canadian! I will finally get to see them live in Winnipeg in October after waiting 30 years.... can't wait.
@Jerome Johnson
Obviously verified facts are above troll intellengence.
I Love these guys i have been listening to them for years😁
