This week, TheCarGuys collect a brand new Aston Martin DBS Superleggera from the factory in Gaydon, for a five-day extended road test split over two episodes.
This is the first part of the review, where Damian collects the car and gives his first impressions during over 400 miles of driving on various roads. Does it live up to the hype? What are the indicators like? Can anyone fit in the back? Can it possibly be as fast as an 812?
This has been a contender for the TheCarGuys garage since the DBS’s launch in June 2018, and with reviews of the 812 and Continental now complete, Damian and Jason are at last able to rate this new Aston against the best from Maranello and Crewe.
Created by two ordinary guys with an obsession for cars, TheCarGuys.tv is a digital channel that celebrates everything automotive - supercars, classics, quirky, hidden gems and those in the TCG garage.

What I enjoy most Damian is that unlike a lot of car reviewers or journalists it’s your money that will buy the cars that you like, this leads to some real honest comments around likes.dislikes, value for money etc. Nobody sponsors you it’s just your opinion. Look forward to you antics with Jason next week, especially who will look more scared (you of course) when you thrash it around!

An Aston has that level of sophistication that something like a Farrari or Lambo just does not have.
In reference to a Ferrari, Chris Harris said: 'People love the car but they hate you'. You wouldn't get that in an Aston - just all round respect for such an elegant car.

Super reviews as a newish subscriber to the channel. I think the external design esp. with the colour and rims makes you fall in love with this car. The only problem is, when you open the door and sit in the cabin you realise very quickly that same sense of excitement you had dissipates as AM have, as you rightly pointed out, failed to pay any attention on getting that centre console right inc. the lack of touch screen. So, all the hard work taken to make the car look amazing externally just kills it esp. given the price tag and competition out there. Damian: your Mazda point totally nails it on the other car too - I couldn’t put my finger on why I was not bought into the new front design of that car until you summarised it in that one word. Finally, I think Jason and yourself should organise a car guys trip to see your own collection at some point soon ... to see the lovely yellow and blue Ferrari would be great - even if you did part with the F40! enjoy the vlogs - may be a Portofino should join the collection at some point too?

A Superleggera with a Ferrari engine probably would be the ultimate GT car...... More beautiful design with a superbe engine! Ferrari 812 remains way more spectacle and smiles per gallon. But Superleggera is probably easier to live with on a day to day basis as a fast luxury GT.

When I think about the Ferrari 812, it’s exciting, loud, ultra snappy gears, high revving and fresh. The Aston Martin, whilst pretty, doesn’t appear to have the same level of excitement. For a new car it isn’t cutting edge enough for me. If I win the lotto tonight, it’s the 812 I’d get and spend the £200k saved on the Aston for a 992 GT3, once they are out.

Stunning car. The problem is that it isn’t different enough inside from a DB11. That is a car which is £75k less! Also when you compare it to the new Bentley continental interior it looks like it’s come from two generations of tech before that car as well.
The biggest issue is going to be depreciation. Because they’ve overpriced the car from outset it’s going to be a very painful experience for the first owner. I believe you will get one of these in 12-18 months for £100k less than the new price. Now that would start to look like the true value of this car.

    • @benjamin7114
      @benjamin7114 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

True , seems just like a tuned DB11 in a bodykit . Mansory have a tuned DB11 that is already pushing numbers close to the Superleggera . This is the car you buy if you already own a proper supercar

This car is stunning to look at on the outside, the interior would have done nicely with the older center console fitted with a nice touchscreen (not sticking it, fitting it) to it. I don´t like the diamond stitching, is way overdone, but you can certainly spec that spiderweb away. (Agree with you on the Vantage, it looks like an MX5)

  • @RootsandTendrils

Well that was an engaging presentation Damian, nice way to start my evening. The DBS Superleggera has a powerful presence and is certainly the most beautiful Aston currently available, and perhaps ever; I am moved to go to the configurator and see what can be done with the car to make it a thing of untrammeled and enchanting beauty. I feel similarly to yourself regarding the Vantage, it is a car of fine kinetic dynamism, but some of its forms lack basic proportion. I would not assert to compare the 812 with the Superleggera, its clear the Ferrari is an incomparable and pinnacle vehicle. The DBS is a car of fine qualities on its own however and as you say a very notable example of British Art, something I truly want to see. I wonder, why not conceive of this car as being able to accommodate rear seat passengers with a little more practicality and grace, would it really affect its appearance or performance so much to do so? I wonder what Aston has to say about it. Take your time with the next chapter.

The interior looks very dated and I am not a fan of the leather on this car, but on the other hand there few cars featuring such a beautiful exterior.
It would be a hard decision to make if I were ok the market for a GT.

A great review guys. I think you hit the nail on the head - this car is achingly, bite the back of your hand, beautiful but the interior is just not good enough. The seats and all that quilted leather is spot on but the centre console, dash and the tech (once you've seen that sensor bublle behind the mirror - you just can't un-see it - same as the DB11 just horrid) is not what I expect to find in a 2019 quarter of a million pound car and would go as far as saying it's a step back from the last generation Aston interiors. I also will never be able to love the turbo charged era in the same way as I love the naturally aspirated 6.0L V12 in the last gen. I'm meeting Marek Reichman next week and I intend to ask him when the interior is going to be rectified!!

Why does the car "hunker down" when you put the drivetrain into sport plus? Isn't that what the left hand (suspension setting) button is for??

As much as I want to love it, it's just not there yet. The electronics and entertainment system needs a lot of updating, tungsten steel rather than plastic buttons, the interior just isn't opulent enough.
Aston appear to have been trapped in an identity crisis for a few years, they class these cars as gt cruisers but in reality, they're just very comfortable British muscles cars.
Who am I kidding.... Sunday drive for a spot of lunch, windows down destroying the sound of the countryside with those exhaust notes, waving to the people outside the local coffee shop, saluting every British flag you pass to the next nearest petrol station, on your way to the yacht in Monaco.
The only button you need in an Aston, is the one to turn it on.
    BUY IT!

I like it. But I suspect the insurance on my 2002 Toyota corolla is slightly less. That being said. The difference would be worth the cost..as long as my lady doesn't find out. Or I'd be finding out how to sleep in the Aston.

You guys should track these cars. They're too powerful for regular road reviews. Your reactions would be hilarious too. Also time to invest in a drone.

Love it, love it, love it, did I mention that I love it.
The car and the presentation of the Video. The car looks Taught, squat & powerful. The automobile equivalent of Me. Ha!
I personally think If I was in your position Dimien, I'd have to have it buddy. Simple as that.
I love the fact you rock up to pick it up in a Fezza. Ha ha. Now that's a stylish, cheeky little move, that if I was the person who was handing you the keys over, I'd have to give you a knowing look, smile as if to acknowledge you are my target audience and I want your business and you obviously know the script.
Your presenting style, for me on this platform is unsurpassed. It's as if you are talking directly to me. Love it. You describe the experience in terms that everyone can relate to without been pretentious and up your own arse. And if anybody I know (I feel like I do but only through here - a testament to your description and presenting style) had the right to be up their own arse its yourself but your not at all and for that as they say here in Rome "Salute".
Keep it up Damien. Some mainstream multi platform car show awaits me thinks at some point.

I think this Aston, the new conti gt and 812 will be viewed as the superlative point of proper gt cars before hybridisation and/or regulatory changes put an end to these types of car as we know it. If I had the wherewithal to own these I would probably buy all 3 and keep them and drive them until I die
