I like the hidden wordplay in this battle. Cubes attacks mostly revolve around the environment rather than direct attacks, and they tend to attack around the edges of the screen, forcing you to stay “Close to him”.
That’s why when you stay over in the corner midway in the fight he tries to reach out to you because you’re too far from him. Edit: Not when all the claws and grabby grabbers are coming out of him but before that.
This level and the cube is a good allegory for how difficult it is to reach out, and how hard it can be to watch someone close to you start to decline. sometimes it's hard not to hurt people by accident when you are so sad and angry at the state of things. Sometimes it's hard to express your feelings without being harsh or wanting to run away from them.

I love and hate the fact that you can see the cube struggling against the corruption this shows that he Really doesn’t want to hurt you. And I love the fact that you can actually see the struggle he’s going through. It’s great for a game like this!

It's a small tale of a friend, a close friend, becoming corrupted and forcing you to face off against them in order to save them. Be happy that you saved them in the end and didn't have to kill them, like other games....

Well, a play on words, where at the level you literally have to stay "close" to Friend in order to avoid attacks, also matters. tbh, this cute lil guy is much stronger than he seems, he is the only boss that literally restored his body from corruption in the end of battle (triangle just made the work ultimately done), unlike every freaking boss. and also - not everyone will be able to use their cat ears as a DEFIBRILLATOR, DAMN it- didn't think that a game about simple geometric shapes would make me cry.
Im pretty sure its because people are seeing this guy in *pain* trying to get to his friends, or like how he is using environmental attack to get the white square "closer to him". It revolves around the square trying to resist and get back to his *FRIENDS*
I adore this fight 1. The name is a very smart one as it works with the optimal way to beat this level 2. The fact that this is a major turning point in the plot is unique and sad, which works good with the message of never giving up seen throughout the game 3. The music

I remember showing this game to a kid I met at programming camp. We both watched the factory cutscene before Cube got corrupted,and may I just say we both were just going "NO NO NO NO NO" before it happened. This. Moment. Was. HEAVY.
I feel like there was more effort put into this boss than Annihilate. So, most of the attacks revolve around the edges of the screen. Implying that, you want to be close to him. Like the song name. And then there's the laser part, where he reaches out for you, because you're too far. But then he gets zapped, implying the demon doesn't you to be close to him. This amount of effort also shows how, losing a friend is super tough. As well as the difficulty. I'd say it's harder than Annihilate. The final attack also implies to get even closer than before, and eventually it spins so fast you have to dash. Like you'd dash to help your friend. And also, since you're closer to the cube, it's like, again, losing a friend. You miss them more and more. So much effort was put into this battle. JS&B had a lot of thought put into it. Take it from not one battle, but the game itself.

It's great how just a simple game can make you have such an emotional connection. Assuming this is still the only piece of this game you have heard of, let me tell you that this boss is actually your friend but they are being "corrupted". Most if not all characters in this game do not have a confirmed name. Yes, there is a story mode and I don't want to spoil much of it because it is amazing.

They don't kill the cactus boss from Lycanthropy either. This just proves that Small Cube knows that they can save everyone. But yes, Small and Big Cube are close friends, as we can see in Paradise and right before the final boss.
My friend beat the whole game, and most people call this lil cube 'sad cube' or something like that, me and my friend call this dude 'Cat' because of the life triangles he wears as cat ears when you finish this level. And Cat is my favorite character!

For me.. the image of the Boss Battle was like a battle between an individual's Rage and Depression. I know this is weird but its pretty much like it. Imagine a person who experience such a tragic past.. that chunk of sadness and a dump size of anger at it's mix... And makes much sense that the song says "close to me" ... It's like its telling us to those people who are in depression and/with rage.. needs to be comforted and to be well treated. Just saying..
This is such a beautiful level. Both the song and the level itself perfectly portrays what it’s like to lose friends. To horrible emotions. You watch them slowly turn into a monster and eventually all you can do is survive. It’s crushing. It makes me angry. This is the best level in the game.

Huh, he telegraphs his attacks with the 8-bar thing. Watch his face. If he shows a default face, he'll pull up the bottom. If he shows a frown + gears, he'll roll to the right and summon a giant gear. If he shows one eye and a gear, he'll summon 4 gears and roll them around the border. Not sure if I'm the only one who noticed that.
Despite the fact that Close To Me is not my favorite Boss Fight and imo, my hardest boss fight to beat, I have to say...... I just cried for a Quadrilateral.
i love how this fight goes from him slowly getting corrupted and then midway he starts escaping the corruption just to be grabbed back in almost fully corrupt until the triangle saves him
Two thing are really good about this game! #1 is that in the title it says close to me which makes sense because most of his attacks force you to stay close to him. #2 AWAWAWA I LOVE SAD BOI HE CUTE #35 Burger King foot lettuce. this game is the best example of visual storytelling i can think of. there is know dialogue unless you cant the music and even that is sparse but you know the story you love the characters its such a good game

For me.. the image of the Boss Battle was like a battle between an individual's Rage and Depression.
I know this is weird but its pretty much like it.
Imagine a person who experience such a tragic past.. that chunk of sadness and a dump size of anger at it's mix...

This is such a beautiful level. Both the song and the level itself perfectly portrays what it’s like to lose friends. To horrible emotions. You watch them slowly turn into a monster and eventually all you can do is survive. It’s crushing. It makes me angry. This is the best level in the game.

Here you read the description that you are suppose to not care about but in reality it shares a different opinion than you and you feel sorry for this sad cube boi.
Honestly, this boss battle is a masterpiece. It’s like the cube has become a product of the factory. But also they’re sad, angry, and needs help, but you don’t have the option to help.
Anyone else feel like he already had most of those powers but was scared to use them but when he got triangled he got the saw thingys and and started using all the powers because the triangle was corrupting him but he still had enough power to not atack directly

If he shows a default face, he'll pull up the bottom.
If he shows a frown + gears, he'll roll to the right and summon a giant gear.
If he shows one eye and a gear, he'll summon 4 gears and roll them around the border.

Two thing are really good about this game! #1 is that in the title it says close to me which makes sense because most of his attacks force you to stay close to him.
