    Liked your shirt. I live just east of Nashville. Hardest thing here... All heavily wooded and the only clear space is over the lakes and rivers. Given the dense forest, hand launching the mini 3 is super helpful. Will go test that tomorrow.

    Thanks for the video but as someone who's managed to have an accident with a DJI drone please wear glasses when doing this. Even if it's just a pair of sun glasses, you're holding your hand at eye level and it only takes a quick movement from obstacle avoidance and you're in serious shit.

    I’m fairly new to drones but this I find the easiest way to takeoff and land, what is very different with the 3 is the sound of the props, it is very easy to lose track of the drone and end up panicking ( where has it gone ) after comical shenanigans ended up trusting the return to home function. Phew!

    Since buying the mini 2 Ian I have found the best way for me to catch the drone is using the thumb and forefinger either side of the body of the drone . It just feels more sure for me. Great little drone btw and don't regret buying it at all, especially with the fly more combo. Got mine on Amazon with care refresh for 529 pounds. I did insure it as well with cover drone for around £50. 👍👍 Love all your reviews

    Helpful. The other route of pressing the button to land is frustrating because half the time it doesn’t work and says there isn’t a stable surface to land on. Joystick held down is much easier regardless if on hand or a flat surface.

    Time 02:45.
    You had more or less zero wind. During that condition it works well.
    Today the position was on top of a hill and gusty winds. The way You showed here didn't work for the dancing around drone fighting the gusts.
    Instead, getting down to the level of my eyes, my hand approached the Mini 3 slightly from behind, firmly closed some fingers around it, and SLOWLY tilted it 90 degrees, and the props stopped. Yes, the screen showed the entire dictionary of complains.
    What I want to say is that the tilt doesn't need to be like a wrestler throwing the opponent around in a blink.

      I was exactly the same, using a launch pad. I had the Hubsan Zino before, which to its credit was a good drone. But the weight of the mini 2 and it's stability in the air makes it a pleasure to own. I wish they would give owners more freedom to use the following modes as I had on the Hubsan. That also doesn't have obstacle avoidance and I have never crashed it

    I always hate hand catching and know how much damage the props can do (made a stupid mistake trying to pick up my Mavic out the road when a car was coming while motors had started, and it decided that meant it was taking off - shredded my finger and had a good chunk missing from the tip for a while).
    Just got the Mini 3 Pro which looks like I might sometimes be forced to hand launch/catch, so this video definitely helped a bit.

    An icon comes up on my DJI mini pro 3 often when trying to use the automatic land feature on the screen. Today I looked at the remote for a second as usual to tap the okay button and while looking down it continued the landing process into my hand (usually doesn’t) until I hit the auto landing feature again. Hit my finger cutting the tip then crashing into the ground and breaking a propellor. Luckily the gimbal and body isn’t damaged. Going to use the joystick for hand landing for now on. Thanks for the tip, learned the hard way!

    you can also do manual launch and manual landing, with joystick, launch = push both sticks in down -interior, to start the blades then raise with the altitude stick. landing manually does the same thing, bring it to head level, put hand benith her, push down the stick, and once land u need to keep the stick down for the blades to stop.

    A little known hand catch technique: Hover the drone next to you, then grab it from underneath and quickly flip it while maintaining your grip. Drone propellers stop immediately. This way you can do it even in a little windy conditions. I do this from my kayak. Hand launching and catching are must for this drone(no real landing clearance)if you're out and about, more freedom to use. Once you practice, you'll never go back to the regular way.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, altho personally I don't like how that will stress the arms and motors; it's a good occasional trick but not one I'd do every time... Cheers

    • @maniac_fpv
      @maniac_fpv ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why quick flip? Just push throttle stick down😂

    • @kalhana1
      @kalhana1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes it doesn't want to land on the hand for some reason.When that happens, I hold from the bottom of the airframe and push the 2 sticks down towards each other which cuts the motors (although I have to use my right forearm for the right side stick to do this). It does usually go max throttle since it tries to compensate for it, but I don't think the stress on the components are anything to worry about (flipping it however sounds like more stress for the parts - I haven't tried that).

    If its windy you cant grab it from the enderside as it lands on your hand and holding tight turn it upside down which will kill the props staight away and leave it safe. I saw this on a video and it works great but you need to be quick and not drop it.

    There are situations where hand launching and catching would be a desireable option and that is why I searched out and found your video among others to further evaluate this option with the Mini 3/4 drone.
    With all things being carefully considered it seems to me that that best option would be to avoid situations where hand launching and catching is a necessity. The myriad of things that could go wrong outweigh, in my opinion, just moving to or waiting for the option of throwing your pad down on the ground and doing a proper home point launch/land setup.
    People that insist on trying to fly drones on and off of small boats where factoring in wave motion comes into play is among the most ridiculous things I can think of.

  • @jantjejansen

    Hi Ian, thanks, was waiting for this video. But hand launching Mini 2 is to spin up the motors (easy task by moving sticks down outwards with thumb and elbow when holding drone), move the Mini 2 a little upwards and it'll start hovering at the same height.. In this video the drone is literally launched from the hand and immediately starts raise height by 1,2 mtr.. I think the old 'hand launch' and this launching from the hand are two different things.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, two slightly different approaches but you need to hold the remote in 2 hands to move the two sticks at the same time, or balance on your arm.... 👍🏻

    • @jantjejansen

      @@IaninLondon Thanks.. I fly from balcony most of time, holding drone left hand, controller right hand. With right thumb pull richt stick, with left lower arm puling left stick. When releasing drone to hover I imedialty have control over right stick to stear drone in wanted direction. With neigbours above me drying laundry outside balcony the drone first flying upwards is not really ideal.. That's why was wondering about the hand launch 🙂

    Hand catching is a must for me about 80% of the time. I would like to add one thing though; when hand catching it is very important to not hurry and to think ahead. I have twice been in a rush to catch my Air 2S because I had other people with me, and clipped the tips of my fingers and made a bloody mess. Not a great thing when with clients!

    been watching your videos for a few weeks now buddy as bought an air 2s and wanted to know how to time lapse and best camera settings. you put out good info... all i can say is ive done fpv flying with a go pro strapped on for years, and now i've took the plunge and tried this, i find this type of drone quite boring. i know you might think i'm comparing apples to oranges but i can also do smooth cinematic footage with my fpv drone and can actually do it much better with all the freedom and agility free style gives me going round tight gaps etc. betaflight is the best to fine tune too. these dji drones are sooo rigid and only good for pans and orbits i find. i can do split s dives down cliffs and water falls with fpv and get very interesting video montages put together. i'll use the mavic for more professional shooting as it has the 1 inch sensor and can get slightly better HD video but cant think of anything else for it tbh. it's very user friendly and requires almost no skill which is a bonus i guess. the reflective phone screen is harder to use too compared to the immersive goggles.

      Yep, all fair points! I need to get more out of my fpv..... The short battery life always puts me off.... But yep, cruising down over a cliff. Always awesome 🤠

    I do hand launches and landings all the time now after one too many episodes of turning my drone into a £640 lawnmower and having to replace the props twice. The only time I fu*ked up a hand landing was when I was perched on a boulder next to the river and mis-judged how far forward the drone was. I panicked and tried to grab it and ended up hurting my finger and damaging the props. Always have your feet on stable ground so you have space to move if you need to.

    Same same! Flying the Mini3Pro was a lot of fun! I'm planning on getting an ND filter set for this drone though I've no idea which brand to get. Any suggestions would be welcome :)

    I never tried hand launching, so thanks for the tip. I have caught it mid-air by letting it hover slightly above my head, then sneaking from behind to grab it without it sensing my hand, then I'd flip it upside down to turn it off. My question is, does that damage the drone, or wear it down faster?

    • @IaninLondon

      I don't like twisting it to shut it down.... I'm sure it puts unnecessary stress on the legs and joints... but that's just me...

      I'd say it mainly depends on whether or not being under 25g makes a difference wherever you are. Certainly in the UK I'd be strongly biased towards the Mini 3 Pro just because of that.

    Just tried this and first attempt went very smoothly… the 2nd not so well and got a painful blow to my fingers as a result with drone hitting the ground (on grass fortunately). I will persevere with it tho’ as it’s so convenient to be able to hand launch & catch.

      @@IaninLondon yep… I think I panicked a bit as the drone was landing as it didn’t appear to be squarely over my upturned palm. I’ve been hand catching my phantom4 Pro for years, so this should be easier, right 😉

      Yes, found out later they don't allow flying anywhere. I only flew for this single video....

    If you're landing in a tricky situation like on a boat or in the wind, I'd recommend gripping it with your thumb and forefinger once it's on your hand. I lost mine to the water doing it like this :)

    Great little tutorial Ian 👍
    Just a quick question…I’ve ordered the mini 3 pro and the fly more combo ,only got to wait 6 weeks lol. Anyway my question : should I charge the batteries separately ?
    I can remember, when I got the Mavic Air 2 combo, you advised to charge separately.
    Just wondered what you would suggest ?
    Many thanks

      I've used the hub with no issues 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @mascot4950
      @mascot4950 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the videos I've seen, the charging hub charges the batteries in sequence, so that's in effect what it does even if you plop them all in at the same time. I couldn't wait for the fly more combo packs to become available, so I just got the drone itself and will pick up the fly more pack once it comes back into stock.

    Almost always hand catch the mini 3. Had no option to try hand catching my mavic 3 today as battery was forcing landing and nowhere suitable to land so had my first go at it.... jesus i know i have small hands but took ages for the props to stop was like fighting a dragon 😅😅😅

    Never had issues with Mini's. The Mavic 3 is the one I cringe every catch, especially with Master Airscrew Stealth Props. They have razor sharp edges, and while the odds of a prop strike are slim, the outcome of one failure could be a reduction of digits.

    A gent on another channel, who shall remain nameless stated "even if the Mini 3 Pro props hit, they are small. They will hurt but won't draw blood. Okay Mr Thick Skin. Good luck with that. A prop scar is a rite of passage in drone piloting. The M3P does have longer arms, but longer props accompany that!

    • @Shite4brainzz

      Having been happily hand launching/catching my M3P since I got it, I can vouch for their failure to draw blood on my thumb, which I forgot to fold out flat on one occasion for some reason! It did hurt, though :)

    Hand landing yes. But hand launching with the N1 controller and tapping the tkof-button on the phone is more difficult...

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. TBH, landing is the more common function; I rarely hand launch as you can always find a rock or something to take off from 👍🏻
