Why does the SpaceX droneship camera cut out?

  • SpaceX provides some of the most spectacular sights in spaceflight with the landing of their Falcon 9 booster. But why does the video feed always seem to cut out right as the booster is coming in to land on the droneship?

      @eemc2cu but you can see the actual engine of the booster coming in to the picture? I've always tried to respect other people's beliefs but do you by any chance also believe in Nazi's on the moon? 🤔😂
      EDIT: and please educate yourself by looking up "gravity turn" that'll explain the 'inexplicable' curve 😉

    • @theformoverfunction
      @theformoverfunction 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      @eemc2cu hahaha lol you're a funny guy. Well I think you've never been in a plane bc you think those are fake too, but from a plane you can actually see circular rainbows, even while looking towards the ground. The rainbow curves bc you're at 42 degrees of the sunlight refracting (and reflecting) in raindrops (and clouds etc). Furthermore, when using a pressure washer at home, you can also see circular rainbows if you look at the right angle, even though there only a foot in diameter at most. Both of the cases above instantly debunk the involvement of any hypothetical dome in the curving of rainbows. I'm all for asking weird questions, that's what advances science, but please don't ask any weird questions that have been answered and proven many many years ago. Good luck educating yourself man!

    Two years later and SpaceX's droneships still lose signal when the boosters land. Great video, especially because it got recommended at the perfect time, though it definitely seems like not everyone in the comments has watched it. To all those that ignored the video or are annoyed that SpaceX isn't doing anything to fix this problem: the livestream, your entertainment, is not the biggest priority in a mission where they're proving to NASA that their privately-built rockets and capsules are here to stay.

      The issue with that is if you have the delay be applied automatically from the drone ship, you just move the delay to a different part of the video, if you do it manually from anywhere else the lag will still be there. You would need to delay a whole lot more than just the drone ship video feed. Not really worth it. Also engineers wouldn't get to see exactly if the landing was successful until after the delay is finished.

    The current situation is so much worse: you potentially end up waiting hours until someone finds and links to the later-uploaded video with the 5-seconds of missed footage.

      Definitely a good idea - if it transmits a buffer.
      I'm not sure if it transmits a buffer, to me it sounds more logical that it just transmits a live signal (to save bandwidth). The actual footage is in that case pulled off the droneship itself physically or transmitted at a later moment when there's no live broadcast anymore.

      Most of the time, if not all the time, this video is transmitted via UDP rather than TCP. So that means you can lose packets. To make it TCP would require a receive antenna onboard which again increases cost for 2 seconds. If you are a computer performing calculations you want real time data not buffered data (TCP). If you lose data you can handle that more gracefully. But knowing whether it is buffered or not is a whole bigger problem.

The communication are still 100%, no delay, no buffering. Quite frankly, the recent video footage of Prince Charles from SKY NEWS, looked as if it was recorded on a VHS Recorder, with a screen filter effect on top. How about that? Some reporter covering "BLM" protest, had delay and buffering on the live repor in US, probably not that far from his Network Location. It's also hilarious that recently during Dragon Demo-2 an assistant has no problem with communication with the crew traveling twice the speed of sound while supposedly on the other side of the hemisphere, there's land between rocket and headquarters, yet she's chatting away as if she's next door to them. The last two landings there were no camera cuts, since the barges have been recently upgraded I am thinking they are using the starlink sats now. Which to me makes since just to be putting traffic across them before having the starlink service even make it into beta. Also if there were multiple transmitters on the barges after the upgrades having hundreds of starlink sats up there it gives you many of targets for the transmitters to broadcast to. Also if that is the case, then it is giving lots of testing data to spacex on how the starlinks are functioning.

      Ok, I get why this can't be live. But they need to manage expectations better. First, have something stating that the connection is "Likely to drop". This is just like the radio silence period of capsules re-entering the atmosphere. Then show the footage as soon as able once re-connected. This should only be minutes ... like a long broadcast delay. People won't care if its not live, but you have 5-10 minutes max until people start tuning out.

    • @boborenebobo
      @boborenebobo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe they ignore completely the mockery of missing footage and image damage... to a private business, or the obvious explanation is the real one, there is no footage. People can accept a strong reason, but same reason about cost and bad engineering is not working anymore.

  • @MrSamwise7
    @MrSamwise7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    I feel like the easiest fix would be by having an antenna either on a buoy style setup or a smaller ship that either of which could be deployed off the drone ship just prior to touch down and dragged behind the drone ship. Then winched back on board when the rocket has landed

    • @OntarioTrafficMan

    • @IBHunter
      @IBHunter 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      kingjb82 you will have a similar problem with the small boat, except it will be going out all the time. The pitch and roll on small boats are usually too fast for the uplink antenna to track. Even when using stronger Servos, the flex of the fish and mount causes outages. An electronically steered array antenna could theoretically be used. $$$$

    1. A tethered flying drone off the end of the ship with the antenna, for vibration isolation. Hover the drone over the water, away from the incoming flight path of the booster.
    2. Hover the antenna a few inches above its mount like the puck of an air hockey game. Vibration isolation achieved. Add a skirt like a hovercraft to contain the air flow. The signal cable will have slack coiled beneath the air skirt.
