This is definitely one of the Sonic games with the most mixed reviews I've seen. Usually, while obviously people have different takes and tastes, the opinion on a game is pretty uniform. Like "Forces was a huge disappointment, and this proves Sonic is dying," or "Frontiers is an awesome game and the return of Sonic". Most of the time is somewhere along those lines. However, with Superstars, I seriously can't pinpoint a general consensus, a third of the reviews I see hate it or are at least dissapointed, a third just say it's ok, and a third love it or say its a step in the right direction. Maybe it's because the game just came out, but the diversity of opinions seriously amazes me. I can't say much since I haven't tried it, but I'm excited to see it with my own eyes.
It's because there are bits of the game that are really good, and bits that can get very frustrating. Depending on your preferences, the frustrating bits might be either fun, if you enjoy increased difficulty, or infuriating, if you don't. Also, the music is either awesome or awful, dependent on the track. So, yeah, divisive.
ignore the negative reviews. the game only has a few flaws, but that doesn’t destroy the game completely. you get as many tries for the bosses as you want and people still complain. if you don’t like the music, play it on mute
That's actually a good way to describe it: it's divisive. at it's best, it's on par with Mania and Frontiers at its worst, its on par with Forces It's just all over the place
14:42 There was an animation that was released before the game that hinted towards this (at least looking back at it now, it makes sense). While Fang and Trip were dealing with the big snake, Eggman was studying some artwork on a wall. Afterwards he shows the two his findings with a drawing of a dragon. In regard to the music, other than Lagoon City’s, the rest of the soundtrack should have been given to Tee Lopes to do. Jun is great with the Modern music, but Tee should be the one to do Classic from now on.
7:38 I believe they don't want to get repetitive since Mania already paid homage to the blue spheres special stage and let's be real, the half-pipe special stages may look cooler, but they're not much better than the maze special stage. A trial and error special stage would be horrible when there are a ton of these medal bonuses and you don't play the same one twice in a roll
Frozen Base Act 2 is an entire homage to the SEGA Arcade game Fantasy Zone. Had the same composer, same game mechanics, same first boss and everything. Kinda wish it deserved more respect because everytime SEGA references another IP and puts it in a Sonic game, it's always a "literally who" moment for a lot of people which sucks.
Nah for real bro even in one of the yakuza games people absolutely hated fantasy zone as one of the completion list requirements due to the first few levels of it being "too hard"
One kinda neat thing I didn’t even know about until I watched Channel Pup’s review on this game is that apparently the robot you customize for Battle Mode is the robot you fight in Cyber Station and see Eggman carrying in a container in his Eggmobile in one cutscene, I didn’t know about that cause I immediately made my robot Silver Sonic so I just thought they brought him back but nope, and honestly I think that whole thing is even cooler than legitimately bringing Silver Sonic back for a boss (not to say I wouldn’t wanna see Silver Sonic again for real though)

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed Sonic Superstars. The game’s not perfect. It definitely has its setbacks. But I honestly rank it higher than Mania. The new levels are fun to play through and the level esthetics are solid. Lagoon City is probably my favorite of the zones since it reminds me of Water Palace from Sonic Rush. The game being in 2.5D allows for more to be done with the background like levels being more detailed or having the player interact with the background elements. The new Emerald powers are a nice addition to make each Chaos Emerald feel more special while also not making them mandatory to use to beat the game. And while the soundtrack is a mixed bag, there are still some solid tracks like Speed Jungle Act Sonic or Lagoon City Act 2. (And even some of the Sonic 4 sounding songs are decent in my opinion, like Sky Temple.) Overall, I’d give Sonic Superstars a 7.5 to 8 out of 10. Not perfect, but a fun time overall.
Ranking it higher than mania is imo valid, considering its a more step in to being a more original 2D sonic game that doesn't heavily rely on nostalgia. Dont get me wrong, mania art style is what i prefer but i feel like sonic superstar choosing 3D was just a better idea considering the characters looking more espressive, and the game just looking mad vibrant.

When I first play Sonic Superstars I really love it and I had a great experience with Sonic Superstars. The Gameplay for Classic Sonic is great. The controls in Sonic Superstars are definitely cool. "The main campaign is really easy" whaaat? I was never able to pass the last boss, I ended up losing patience and stopped playing. The bosses and the soundtrack ruin this game.
7:44 I think they could have left Blue Spheres out because they were used in Mania. Plus, lots of people don’t like the half pipe so it might have been easier to go with the modified Sonic 1 special stage instead.
This game is a decent game, well I’ll give it a 8.9/10 because it does not feel that “superstars”, you know what I mean? Well it means like……. There is 1 gazillion boss battles to beat, and the special stages are a little hard, but good, and lastly the gameplay is not that smooth in the switch, but the others are ok… but I recommend the ps5 version, since the loading in the special stages *DOES NOT HAVE* loadings even the bonus stages. So I’ll give it a B+.
I think the zones with 3 acts (2 + character act) were given this many acts due to the multiplayer appeal of the game: your friends may not be willing to wait for you to finish your solo stage before they can play again, hence developers they made it optional, I believe. As for the zone with one long stage, I don't mind, since you're technically getting the same amount of stage, just at once, rather than divided in 2, but I do agree that it would be good to just take the stage and split in twice to make everyone happy
We seem to be opposites. Pinball Carnival Act 1 was one of the few levels that gave me joy and I absolutely hated Trip's campaign because of the level design and the fact that they made the already horrible bosses even longer :(
I really liked this game when I first played it, but after playing the game again my opinion has drastically changed. Its not awful its fun but it has a lot of problems, overall it’s a decent game, not really worth it though in my opinion, considering how short it is.
Well my complaint is that I wouldn't say Trip's Story along with the true final boss with super sonic are perfect either as those are meant to be more difficult than the normal final boss
I’ll never understand why people prefer the special stages from the sequels over the original game. The fact that they use the same mechanics as the actual game makes them so much better.

I kinda feel like the extra attack should be the exception to the rule of only 1 chaos power per checkpoint because well... I feel the extra moves are underpowered. Sonic has it the best with Homing attack but the others? They all have projectiles that are pretty much useless outside of boss fights and even then due to the invulnerability periods you only can get 1 hit with it. Trip probably has it the worse since it's the suckiest fire flower in existence. The only time I can think of where it was useful was skipping 1 laser section of the first phase of her final fight? But when that fight has like 15 hits total with only the first phase actually being vulnerable it sucks. Vision would be an easy ability to improve too, just let it reveal a few rings in boss fights Final Fang mostly relies on insta kills anyways so it's not like it'd break the challenge of that fight.

Just a public service announcement for literally every game reviewer in the modern age - not just you, kind reviewer sir. There is nothing more obvious in this medium than the "this game is not perfect" statement. We need to stop saying this when describing games. Every single game is flawed and imperfect, regardless of it's review score.
its the first 2D classic game i liked and it was and still is pretty dope, and with the Sega Documents leak talking about Superstars DLC + the fact that the last sonic games have all had DLC like the updates of Frontiers and Origin plus I'm pretty sure is very likely this game is gonna get more stuff and I'm seeing mods trying to recreate Sonic Rush out there which is amazing, maybe we will even have constant online updates with new maps and minigames I just have to wonder where did trip go after Superstars is she gonna appear in a modern scenario because have a Dragon Friend in battles against Gods and other world entities would bee pretty neat
My problem is Sega's decision to make Arzest design Sonic Superstars. It proves that Sega is still willing to go the cheap way out. Sega could of hired any company to design levels. They chose Arzest. A company that has never made a game with good reviews. I wont bash Superstars too much because some people here like it. But Sega's decision to choose Arzest is a problem

To me this game is really great but some stage really too many gimmick don't get me wrong I love the stage itself but the stage itself really has to do with the gimmick itself some of the gimmick I really like but some of them not so much and I don't think it's a good idea make 2d sonic game with co-op because you know this game focus on fast pace and the main selling to this game are the co-op if they make a online multiplayer for the story mode is great but at least they try btw that one level have the concept art sonic 1 looping loop and tails doll in this game too ok the music is mix bag some soundtrack really great and some of them not good I think Jun really need to focus for modern soundtrack other than classic soundtrack don't get me wrong I love Jun work but for classic game I don't think so he just really bad at classic soundtrack tbh and I think this game will be a foundation for next 2d sonic game just let tee lopes make the soundtrack and don't put the co-op it doesn't fit for 2d sonic game this is good first step for modern 2d classic sonic game I hope for future game they really need make good stage and btw this game need fix some bug too like after you complete stage you go to shop after done at shop you just suddenly teleport to stage 11 that's really weird
Fun my ass. The level design and enemy placement is like randomly generated nonsense. There's no flow like Mania and most of the speed is scripted. Trying to go fast any other time ends in an unfair death.
I liked Superstars, but saying it "evolved" anything is hyperbole. It didn't do anything new or groundbreaking for the genre or even just for 2D Sonic. It's just good. Not even great, Sky Temple is ass and all the bosses are dogshit

Regardless of the people feeling mixed about this game, I had a fun time with it. It’s everything Sonic 4 should’ve been, 9/10
I think they leaned too hard into the bosses on both act 1 and 2 and they get so much frustrating later in compared to Sonic Mania
I think I would get if it was $30-$40 but 60 is too much
its the first 2D classic game i liked and it was and still is pretty dope, and with the Sega Documents leak talking about Superstars DLC + the fact that the last sonic games have all had DLC like the updates of Frontiers and Origin plus I'm pretty sure is very likely this game is gonna get more stuff and I'm seeing mods trying to recreate Sonic Rush out there which is amazing, maybe we will even have constant online updates with new maps and minigames I just have to wonder where did trip go after Superstars is she gonna appear in a modern scenario because have a Dragon Friend in battles against Gods and other world entities would bee pretty neat
I also saw a sonic rush mod, the fans are incredibly talented
@@Glitchyy07 true, they really are talented i hope we get a new 2d modern sonic at some point i would lile to play something like rush again
@@GAMM_SAGE same, rush was my first sonic game so I have huge nostalgia for it
My problem is Sega's decision to make Arzest design Sonic Superstars. It proves that Sega is still willing to go the cheap way out. Sega could of hired any company to design levels. They chose Arzest. A company that has never made a game with good reviews.
I wont bash Superstars too much because some people here like it. But Sega's decision to choose Arzest is a problem

Tell me you haven’t played Fantasy Zone without telling me you haven’t played Fantasy Zone (the arcade shooter level you hated on). :)
I hate to break it to you but this is Sonic Superstars, not Fantasy Zone
@@SFproductions1 Understood. It was a nice easter egg for us old fogeys.
Am ur 500th like
Ofc it's not perfect, no game is, but it's still good.
I hate Blue Sphere. Thank god they didn't bring it back. Urgh.
Love this game
Who cares if it's perfect?! Why can't games just be good or OK?
Nobody said they can't lmao
Even games you people considered "perfect" aren't even perfect either. Saying that makes you sound either pretty ungrateful or have Nazi levels of insanely high standards.@@SFproductions1
@@LegionOfWorldWarriors you're delusional lmao. All I'm saying is the game isn't perfect. Am I wrong? Get that "Nazi" bullshit out of here. You're wild for that
the Level Design itself was it's weakest aspect to be honest especially in Trip's Campaign and True Final Boss, the other stuff was fine
To be fair, no sonic game is perfect
*Yes, even mania*
But superstars is definitely one of the better games
i liked the game except the bosses, they take waaaaaay to much time to do their attacks and waaaaay to long to defeat unlike the classic games where you could do multiple hits if you where skilled enough, for real a lot take more than 5 minutes to defeat and if you loose you need to do these 5 minutes again
my only complain besides the music which in my opinion doesnt sound good tbh
Bro I'm grounded i can't get it😢
Oof. Get ungrounded
@@aagamer43 bro what
Bro has Mario in his thumbnail and hasn’t posted wonder
Im still playing through it. Not planning on a review as of now tho
This game was pretty fun
until the final boss of the normal story
I beat it and just decided to abandon 100% this game
shocker

I feel ashamed for bashing this like a nitpicky hater...
Sonic Superstars ISN'T a very easy game!
I had a little fun playing the game but it still is a bad game
The main story final boss is impossible 🤬
wont get it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to expensive.
its a good game but that's just your upinuin
This game is amazing. Mania was great but I already played that game on the Genesis… ( Sonic 2 & 3 / Sonic and Knuckles ) all complied together in 1 game. Mania….At least super stars tried something innovative.
Bruh
As if sonic mania didn't do that 💀
Mania did it but forces killed him again
and superstars is a lot different, except for the physics
@@Pan_Frytek superstars is a sequel to the master system or game gear rather than the genesis game
It’s better than mania
Pardon
yeah you heard me
@@Geometric_CupCakeFunny joke
who tf said I was joking?
Super Mario Wonder 7.5/10
Superstars seems like an overall descent game but at this point, Mania 2 would be the last hope for the classic series..
I think its *ok* , absolutly NOT worth 70 dollars
Nah, it finally proved Classic Sonic is no longer viable.
Least delusional Sonic fan, this game is the only good Sonic game since Mania. Sega can't do good 3d games anymore.
@@Terminated_Accountme when someone shares the same opinion 💀:
@@Miner_7 he didn't share his opinion, he said a bold statement.
How is he on longer viable? Pls elaborate
@@aagamer43 Classic formula is overused and limited. But screw that, could have been more innovative to make it actually good. Recolored wisps and old zones again ain't innovation.
