      Hi Pat, a question for you: have you ever tried the Squier Vintage Modified take on the Mustang? I have a black mustang of that series, it came with Duncan Designed mini split coil pickup (so no P-J solution, but the classic mustang way instead) and I think it sounds great. Plus, this series was WAAAAAY less expensive than this new Classic Vibe one (mine was a b-stock from Thomann and I had it for less than 200€, insane!!!)... so, just wondering: have you ever had the chance to play one?

      Things must have really changed when they changed from the China factory to the Indonesian one. The old Chinese CV basses from the early 2010's are great, but I've heard nothing but disappointment from the new ones. This is a completely giggable instrument. Easy and fun to play, with a very slim neck and a perfectly adequate sound for almost every kind of pop/rock music. For a cheaper bass it actually has an unusually wide tonal range, and no-one is forced to play it only on the brightest setting. There are plenty of other options, especially if one installs one of the more versatile sets of flatwounds, like Fenders (stock on Fender's own JMJ Mustang bass).

    Actually, to my ears, this bass sounds better than some of the reviews on TH-cam I've seen of $5000 boutique basses. That could be the player, but there are a lot of really high priced basses out there that sound like crap. And others that sound killer. But for the cheap price tag on this Mustang, it sounds pretty damned good. It's not meant to sound like a Fodera. Obviously.
    As for Mustangs, I think the Fender American Performer Mustang nails it--super versatile with the extra J-pickup and the pickups are voiced to give a more "modern tone." I think that bass sounds every bit as good as the standard scale Fender J's and P's. But, as for this Squier Mustang... I'd rock it. Sounds gigable to me. But then I don't do death metal. Mainly classic rock and soul. You know... dinosaur stuff?

    I just spent a few minutes going back and forth between some sound sections in this video and your demo of the JMJ Mustang that you really enjoyed. Honestly in most of the sections, especially ones where you use the pick, I liked the sound of the CV as much or more. You probably didn't have the gear and recording setup exactly the same in the two videos, so maybe some of that is set up differently in this demo to compensate for what you describe as the lacklustre sound of the CV, but I'm thinking if the tone issues are something that you easily managed to fix and make sound that good with some simple adjustments of the tone knob, or amp EQ, then that's really not a big deal, especially considering the CV is half the price of the JMJ. Thanks for the great demos! :)

      To my ears, Mustangs basses doesn’t sounds the best with roundwounds. It’s a vintage thing :-)
      IMHO if it costs 400 it’s probably because of the real bone nut that you can only expect on high ends basses and guitars

    Own a JMJ Mustang Bass. Although not as loud as a Precision Bass the bass is still a powerhouse! Works great with flatwound strings.

    I bought a $300 Squier Bronco just so I could guiltlessly mod the heck out of it. I think you’ld like the way it turned out. I put atleast $1000 into extensive mods. It’s wonderful now, fun to play and more fun to show off. Plus it sounds good too.

    I disagree about the pick ups. I have this bass and it sounds huge. Out of the box, it was fine, but after a visit to the luthier’s and a set of flats, it’s amazing.

  • @spooksmalloy

    Ah I don't know, I love mine and thought the pick-up was fine. It's a short scale Mustang, it only kinda does 2 tones, they're not exactly famous for being versatile instruments. It does the Talking Heads vibe perfectly, can't say I'd bother changing pickups.

    I’ve always heard Nato compared to Basswood.
    I tried to buy a Classic Vibe Jaguar, same price point, I got two with major defects. After the second return, I gave up on my dream of owning a Jaguar. It is unfortunate, because I would have otherwise considered this bass.
    I put a cheap Amazon copy of an original ‘57 P-bass pickup in a Bronco bass, and it sounds exactly as this pickup is described. I like it when I roll off the tone, like this Mustang pickup. I really like it with the tone on full with fuzz, for a lo-fi garage tone.

    I've had my Squier CV '64 Precision for 10 years, and at first it was a great bass. Over the years, though, I had problems with the neck - it would literally flex while playing with it, causing the notes on the first fret to fret out and for the whole bass to keep slipping out of tune. I thought it was the bridge or tuners, so I kept replacing them with others. Ultimately the truss rod went, and it would turn into a ski jump again a half hour after getting the neck straight. I wound up replacing it with a brand new Fender MIM Standard Precision neck, and the problems went away. At least Fender has this line at vintage specs, so just about any Fender replacement part is a drop-in (though for standard-sized pots you'll need to route out the control cavity).
    The Seymour Duncan Mustang bass pickups might be right up your alley, but maybe also try out a Fender Mustang and see if the pickups on that are more to your liking.

  • @toongurl

    It's the pick-ups!!! The same pick-ups are on the American Performer Mustang Bass. I have one and I'm switching the pick-ups out for a set of Seymour Duncan JMJs. Fingers crossed that it sounds comes out with real character after the switch

    Honestly the appeal of this bass to me was that it was perfect for playing Jamerson/Weymouth style lines if you put flats on it and it sounds like it does that. My main axe is pretty tailored to a much heavier sound (the lightest thing it sounds appropriate for is Zeppelin) so having a backup bass for funk/jazz gigs I get is perfect.

    My dream mustang bass would have Billy Sheehan pickups on it personally. I think it would benefit from a proper pbass pickup and a neck humbucker. Regular mustangs have a good tone for post punk stuff where maybe your playing melodies and using chorus with it. But I use a bass vi for those tones.

  • @xxxjessejamesxxx7058
    @xxxjessejamesxxx7058 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah it actually isn't just specifically this bass. Mustang pickups specifically have been known to be lacking tone-wise because of how small the split pickups are. This is why Fender has been putting out these Mustangs with P-Pickups because in this case, size matters.

    Have this bass, and I do kind of agree about stock, and price. Because the key to this bass sounding great has been putting La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass flats on it. And, in that sense, yeah, I think it could have been at least 50 cheaper to be a great value proposition. Oth, with the flats on it, I love it. The neck on mine is great - the best of the not expensive guitars and basses that I have. I got the competition blue FSR one, and love the aesthetic. For me, the scale length coming from guitar feels great. And I think it' players like me that this bass is great for. It compares favourably to my Sire H7 guitar, which has a great neck. I'm actually happy with the pickups with the flats. Because it accentuates what I like about it, the deep fundamental, but rolls off enough of the clacky high end you get with rounds. I don't think rounds suit this bass at all. That's it's only problem - they ship with totally wrong strings and then you pay 50 more to get it sounding right. Though, at least you save on string change costs later.

  • @EdBocchino

    I think it sounds great but its hard to tell how much of that could be attributed to the Darkglass head or any other sound processing that is happening. Its fair to assume that a Nordstrand replacement pickup would have that stang screamin'!

    i scored one for $314 and with the prices for even squier vista musicmasters now i think thats worth it. the pickups have a bit of hum and thats my only beef with it. this think rips with distortion and fuzz. the pickups have a very distinct character that i really love. i luckily dont have the dead E string issue that lowend lobster seemed to have.

    I have a fender mustang,p.j. combo which cost me more than 400 bucks, right now is all factory and good sounding to me. I may do some upgrades on it.agulair pickup, Ernie ball flat wounds and a tone monster just to make it better. What do think about that?

    Your right the neck is were it's at. I took the neck off and put it on a p.j. fender mustang body and it is so versatile now. P.s. I also sanded the neck down a bit and it is just right now.

    Back in the early 1970's my friend Mike Jessup from the band "Smoke" used to play a Fender Mustang Bass. He was one of the better Bassist around.
    He also used a Heath Kit Bass Amp that sounded great.
    If you know Frog from Elderly Music, Mike was one of his Bassist.

    • @Wardell43
      @Wardell43 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coming thru my computer 3.1 speakers it sounds excellent. And You can always change the pickups, adjust the action or adjust your amp.
      I'm a guitarist, but If I were recording, this Bass is totally acceptable.
      Your complaint about the tone makes it sound like a Ric. So, Chris Squire from Yes had the distinct Ric sound going on and it couldn't be greater.
      As for the Wood, You can thank the Green Movement for trying to destroy the great guitars.
