    Pro tip for meals with a sauce/veggies and tofu: Fry up your tofu first until it's crispy, then remove from the pan. Do the rest of the cooking (veggies and sauce) in the pan, and add the tofu maybe a minute before serving. That way it keeps its firmer texture, caramelisation and crispiness without burning, while the rest of the components can get soft and well cooked/emulsified. I recently started doing this after years of cooking with tofu, and it makes suuuch a difference when the tofu actually has a great texture!

    • @sini234
      @sini234 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started out this way, but switched to adding the Tofu to the onions in the beginning and having it soak in the sauce as that cooks - while I agree, texture is better when the tofu is taken out, taste is so much… more, if you leave it to cook with the sauce.
      Moste of the time, I even find these dishes better the second day - no more (remotely) crispy tofu, but the saucy taste I want :)

      What type of oil do you use for the tofu if you need any

    • @AliciaDawson
      @AliciaDawson ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thepriceisright048 Depends on the dish, usually I use olive oil tbh but if I am going into a more asian direction I sometimes use a more neutral oil like rapeseed. Remember if you want to use sesame oil at some point, do it just at the end as it's a finishing oil and will burn very quickly rather than giving that awesome flavour!

      @@AbbeysKitchenexcept idol oatmeal is more strict. I'm very well acquainted with two of the BP members from PFW (we go to the same shows and have a similar network group).
      BP's actual diet for tour:
      Breakfast: 1/2 serving of plain oatmeal (made with water, no salt, sugar, NOTHING extra on it. Completely plain), iced Anericano with no sugar (all coffee is pretty much always an Americano, so one shot of espresso and water or sparkling water).
      Lunch: Mixed green salad with 4 cherry tomatoes, no dressing, salt, or pepper. Only the greens and the tomatoes.
      Snack- 1/4 boiled sweet potato
      Dinner - same as lunch, just exchange the cherry tomatoes for 1/4 serving of boiled tofu.
      Beverages: only water, barley or green tea (no milk or sugar), Americano
      That's ALMOST it. Except there is a caveat... days with live performances or photo shoots, no drinking anything except a few sips (or rinse and spits) of water until afterwards. Also, no lunch or snack, and dinner only after the performance is done. They also take orlistat and phentermine/topiramate that is given by the agency.
      Their agency justifies keeping the diet so low so that they can occasionally go out to eat for business dinners, though they aren't allowed to eat anything the next day if they do.

    Not a lot of Korean people eat oatmeal... "Porridge" probably refers to a Korean style rice porridge called "Juk" that most people eat when they are sick or dieting.

  • @iamkid_a
    @iamkid_a ปีที่แล้ว +95

    their porridge is probably a juk or rice porridge but savory oats are really good too :O also gochujang is pronounced with a soft a - so not like "bang" or "rang" but more like "long" or "song" with an -ah sound and not an A sound! same with doenjang which is more like DEN-JAHNG

    • @carolinespurr1541
      @carolinespurr1541 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don’t believe Abbey would describe herself as a HAES dieting - my interpretation is that she’s mainly anti-diet culture, which makes thinness the ultimate pursuit and disguises aesthetic goals with “wellness” messaging. Even if obesity increases certain health risks, a lot of the negativity aimed at obese individuals has more to do with their appearance. Genuine concern for someone’s health doesn’t result in shaming. Focusing on healthy eating > weight loss is more likely to result in long term sustainable changes. It’s just about shifting the mindset. It’s also better for most people’s mental health to focus on directly controllable behaviors (healthy eating, exercise) than indirect results like weight loss, which can be impacted by an number of confounding variables.

    This video was SOO GOOD!!! The amoung of false information about dieting and healthy eating circulates around k-pop is alarming... I used to watch vlogs like this even from non-famous korean girls too a while ago, and I was always amazed how wrong they get things... my "fav" was something like: make sure you weight yourself in the morning AND evening too and the evening weight should be less then the morning one like WHAT?! humanely impossible... since k-pop is getting more and more well-known (especially affecting younger generations) I think it's really important to raise awareness on it's faults so if you could do some more debunking videos on this topic that would be really amazing.

    I appreciate this video SO much! During my ED recovery, I discovered K-pop, and I ended up slipping up because I was trying to now attain a new “standard”. But because I was doing well in recovery my body wasn’t allowing me to have the ED like I did before, and I went the other way into binge eating. I would then validate my binge eating because on a lot of shows these idols were on involved a lot of eating despite outside of these shows they’re depriving themselves.
    I haven’t been into K-pop for a while now, but from what I’ve seen the idols are only getting skinnier and skinner and I wonder what that is doing to the fans.

I put either a chopped banana on top or chopped strawberries which also add in a lot of flavor. Can also always add some chocolate flakes on top too if you prefer.

    • @Diana-qp2rw
      @Diana-qp2rw ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Never added salt, too, because the almond milk I’m using is good enough for flavor and I add nut butter and strawberries or banana and sometimes chocolate. Only started because I ate too little salt (yeah, I know, weird, but I never liked food with much salt)

    • @aficklefangirl2566
      @aficklefangirl2566 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      what Jennie was probably talking about with the 'no-added salt' is juk, or Korean porridge, not our western concept of porridge - it is a savoury dish made from rice, oats, or other grains. it's kind of similar to congee if you are familiar with that. That's why she mentioned not adding salt - because it is a savoury dish so salt would be expected! It would be like saying I have porridge with no added sugar.

    Rose have said that she didn't eat dinner, and she tends to skip, meals or eat small portions and the necessity of her posting photos with food is such a Ed behavior like "hey I look I posted food, that proof I fine , wow I love food "(?) 😢 and the one who struggle the most (for me) is JISOO. I remember her saying that she eats instant noodles before a concert cause she will burn all the calories or she doing cardio after a concert!! To keep fit ? What?! The way they have that behavior so normalize it's shocking.
    In general, Just have a look at BP lives or realities shows, blogs, its sad when It comes to food you see the struggle In their eyes. They pretend for the audience and for the sake of their careers.

      Maybe poorly worded, but if you have extremely picky kids or kids who just won’t enough, supplements can sometimes be the only way to make sure they don’t have a deficit. My little sister often eats little and has not much appetite, unless it comes to certain foods that won’t provide all the nutrients she needs. It’s getting much better, but it used to be so bad my mom gave her sweets or desserts for school so she would eat anything at all in school. She needed some supplements, it was the only way. I guess that’s or something like that is what she meant.
      But yes, Abbey should have probably worded it differently.

    Low salt is just not funny. I was passing out, throwing up and having seizures due to hyponatremia. It was traced to my blood pressure meds. Change of meds, and I was a new person

      She doesn’t in any of the videos! The point is she takes inspiration from the celebrity’s diet and makes it suitable for her own needs. It’s to show inspiration for “hunger crushing combos” and inspire people to make healthy balanced meals.

    Nothing wrong with eating fruit/apples for breakfast. Not everyone needs Greek yogurt, banana, oats, eggs, hemp hearts by the lb & nut butter. You don’t eat that either, let’s be legit.

    The porridge might also be rice porridge as that is super common in Korea, oatmeal is not as much. But still not a super satiating meal unless she eats a ton.

    if you claim to be trying their diet i think you should probably commit to it or not add "was this too extreme?" when you plan to be adding things like eggs and yoghurt to what is supposed to be plain porridge. obviously not extreme

    I don't stand by this lifestyle - but the excessive amounts of dance practice isn't to put them into a calorie deficit it's actually for their jobs, being an idol means you have to be a good DANCER, usually for idols this means achieving perfection just to debut in trainee days and they're expected to maintain that standard and even improve over the years with each comeback. And Lisa is a main dancer of the group so she's expected to be the best of the best when it comes to performing. Again it's probably still just as toxic - but it's not a food/meal or calorie related thing.
    In fact, Jisoo and Jennie have said many times that Lisa and Rose actually are the type that try to eat more and more when they sit down to eat because they're the type that needs to gain 'weight'.

    I love your work, and this channel, but I could've done without the 'turd in a toilet bowl' comment re the doenjang paste in water... I think comments about foods from cultures asides from our own should stay respectful. I am certain you only meant it as a candid, passing comment, otherwise I wouldn't be such an avid follower, but just wanted to point this out as it can be such a sore point for many about their national cuisines.
