God that's awful... And never mind that there's filters and all sorts on those videos, none of those girls look healthy. It's so so hard not to get sucked into that self loathing place, but man is it heartbreaking to see it happen to someone else.
As someone with an eating disorder, it's truly heartbreaking to see media romanticize EDs(typically anorexia) and promote them, I hope TikTok gets taken down
It really isn't safe! I mean obviously if you're obese and you're planning on having surgery there are special diets that doctors will give you but those diets are NOT for long term use. This is seriously scary.
*losing six pounds in a week the way the video showed is unhealthy**** You can lose a lot of weight in a week and it’s still very healthy. It’s how you do it.
Honestly I kind of got sucked into the whole "eat as little as possible" thing that tiktok promotes. Luckily I only did it for about a month until I started to watch Abbey's videos and realize that it's going to ruin my metabolism, and stunt my growth (I'm 14). I'm very grateful that Abbey brings awareness to these normalized, unhealthy diets.
I’m glad to hear you got away from that content at your age. When I was in my early teens I got sucked in through Pinterest. I wish I was educated earlier otherwise I could’ve avoided that part of my life. Thankfully I’m way more aware of actual health thanks to creators like Abby.
I’m also 14, and started working out and eating healthier but not in a good way. I’m glad I started researching more and finding out what was true and what wasn’t. I’m glad I found help and of course Abbey Sharp! 😊
I am impressed that you were able to realize that some girls on TikTok are not best suited to educate you on proper diet and or weight management and sought out a professional like Abbey. That was a very wise decision. Good for you!
I am *mostly* recovered from my ED and I had to delete the app because it was catering to my past disordered eating habits/thoughts 😞 I was finding myself getting triggered just like the pro ana tumblr days. Super proud of myself for deleting the app instead of feeding into my demons more.
Yaaay! I am also in recovery and I know how tempting it can be to just give in to those ED-demons, so I‘m super proud of you for doing what‘s best for you in your recovery process!! I wish you all the best and a happy life filled with yummy foods and ZERO guilt 💖
As someone with a history of ED, I had to delete TikTok due to the algorithm only showing me ED promoting content. Definitely effective me negatively before I realized the cause and deleted the app.
I fell for one of these "diets" last year, eating like 800 calories a day and doing a minimum of 15,000 steps. I thought that because I was doing fish, whole grains, protein and tons of veggies, kale, spinach etc it was "healthy". I dropped a ton of weight and was exhausted, dizzy and grumpy the whole time, so I started adding tons of caffeine/energy drinks. Very bad idea, ended up anemic with vitamin deficiencies and hair falling out. I'm still recovering from it 7 months later.
Same here! When I was younger I went on an extreme diet… For me it was around 1,000 calories a day (when I got hungry I’d just eat a ton of cucumber or lettuce) and I would walk 15, 16, sometimes 20,000 steps a day. My hair fell out (was all over my pillow, clumps in shower), I felt super sluggish, I was out of breath walking up stairs. Zero energy in my legs especially. Had trouble sleeping at night. Anyway, obviously it wasn’t sustainable and I started eating like normal again and although I gained back the weight, I feel a million times better now and would never do one of those diets again. I’m also at a healthy weight for my height now. And that’s not from starving myself. Exercise 2-3 times a week (yoga or Pilates), leisurely walking (6-10k steps a day) and healthy diet. Lots of protein + carbs + healthy fats. Eat a lot of chicken and quinoa and tofu and eggs. I used to only allow myself to eat egg whites, and that’s like the most flavorless part 😂 I can’t even eat under 1400 nowadays because it makes me feel crappy… idk if it’s because I used to starve myself and if my calories drop too low my body is just like WTF NO NOT AGAIN lol
Literally so good hearing you say “I would add” over and over again. And it’s sounds good a nutritious. Taking something triggering and covering it up in a rainbow of sustainability
lockdown and tiktok was such a bad combination. the pandemic itself damaged so many people’s body image and relationships with food, but with tiktok it just has been growing even more. i had to delete the app because i was getting these videos everyday even when not interacting.
100% agree, my eating disorder developed at the start of lockdown/covid and I got my "tips" at the beginning from tiktok. now the world is opening back up and I'm in a deep hole of restriction and depression
@@benedettavandoni7845 Yess! I was only allowed to have soda on my birthday and when we went to a restaurant ( which was Maximum one time a month). CocaCola only when having a stomach bug/ virus and only in small amounts. Greetings from Germany ☺️
Yeah same, for along time they I only had water just cause they never bought anything else and I glad cause I like water while some of my friends have to have some sort of flavouring
Some of the diets I’ve seen on TikTok are so insane! There is a woman who is fasting for 42 days while feeding her kids only a keto diet. I’ve seen others that don’t eat at all or eat insane amounts. I usually just report them to TikTok or say not interested.
Yeah, and from what i know, that what mukbangs actually made for. It first start made for accompanying people who lived alone when eating so that people will not felt alone anymore
Look Yuka Kinoshita. Her older videos are better than her newer content, in my opinion, maybe starting about 6 months back(?) before she changed format. She's adorable and quirky and sweet and she has kitties that like to make cameos popping up while she's eating from time to time! (Also, as a Deaf person, I gotta say her captions are pretty great.)
3 shrimps is part of my child’s meal when she was 1. 3 shrimps + butter rice + lots of carrots. that’s her on a not-so-hungry day. she was 13 months old 😂
Tiktok gives me flashbacks of growing up in Korea, you can’t have foods you enjoy at all, you’re not eating much bc you’re always on some “diet” and no one is there to correct you because everyone condones it... people stick to their ed triggering and enabling communities and that just causes them to spiral even further. It’s terrifying how hard it is to see your ED coming when you surround yourself with the wrong people online. On the other side of tiktok, people thinking eating large amounts of very very unhealthy foods as a staple is.. relatable? Cute?
Oh God! I used to want to move to Korea at the height of my ED- the normalization of unhealthy diets was a huge draw for my malnourished ass. What was the apple goguma and protein shake diet? I subbed sweet potato, but I did that. I worry for girls who grow up there.
i think its ironic how food is a big part of korean culture yet many dont get to enjoy it to its fullest extent because of trying to fit into beauty stsndards/toxic mindsets : (
God--I wish I had heard this video when I was a teenager. What Abbey is saying around the 15 minute mark is so true. I was overweight as a kid and teen and was put on every type of extreme, calorie restricted diet by my mom, which then set me up for a lifetime of restriction and binge eating. Finally in my 30s I got a handle on things but this message is SO important to young people who are developing their own eating habits and food choices.
It's kind of a panic thing, if they gained slightly more weight, then the idea of being obese suddenly are in their head despite being the right weight for their body types, height and shape
@@hwlsgrl Ik this is probably a hehehaha comment but seriously please, try your best to not want that anymore. If you’re underweight, there goes your beautiful strength. It's actually kind of concerning. Like I'm 14 and I have been in more than 5 groups online, these groups aren't secret anymore. Like you can just go one twitter and get on one, and that is the scary part of how easy it is to join one.

I have binge eating disorder. Im working on overcoming it right now. I told my doctor that I wasnt going to focus on how much I eat any more. Because it always causes me to binge when I set calorie restrictions instead of listening to when Im hungry. I told her Im going to focus on the quality of food I eat, strength training, and just moving more, since I really hate aerobic exercise. So far thats been much more successful and I feel Im developing a healthier relationship, not just with food, but my own body.
YES! Thats exactly it! Focus on nourishing and caring for our bodies is so much better then punishment and restrictions! Also you will continue to feel so much better! Keep it up :)
@@playeatlivewellthank you! It is going well so far. Ive lost 15lbs since January. And in the last month since ive focused on strength training, Ive lost 2 inches off my chest, 2 inches off my hips, and 1.5 inches off my waist. All without feeling like Ive deprived myself.
There's some concern about letting children before the age of 16 anywhere near social media. There's a child psychologist that's done several interviews about it.
Just don’t give them phones or tablets. That’s most of the problem solved right there. I know I’m only 25, but do parents feel the need to give their children that stuff? I didn’t get a cell phone (not a smart phone lol) until I was a teenager, and I didn’t own a smart phone until college. Kids don’t need that stuff even if their friends have it!!! Let them be kids!
or on the internet unsupervised at all? when did that become normal? when I was a kid all the teachers and government were saying to make sure the family computer was in a family room so someone was always passing by and could see what the kids were doing and they were never alone with the internet, but now it's like "off you go sweetie, tell the paedophiles that are looking for you and are definitely going to find you to f*** off, ok? That's my girl, be safe!"
It’s not a ‘cool’ app like it used to be. The videos are way more boring, less creative - most of my friends and the teens I know don’t even use it anymore. Luckily i think it’s turning away from being the ‘new thing’ and it’s not really ‘cool’ anymore so I hope less people use it
When I was sick in my starve-based ED I eventually ended up in a daycare facility (you’re there instead of work or school for a period of time, but your home on the evenings and weekends. Like a half inpatient half outpatient thing) and on wednesdays they closed early because they had their weekly group session for BED. Because yeah, that’s ALSO an ED and they made sure to treat all kinds of EDs there, no matter how it showed it self. I think it’s really sad how we somehow refuse to accept BED as a “real ED” just because their battle with food looks different than what media has showed
Thats nice of you! My uncle always says “ wow you ate that much?!” You finished all that!?” Or “You eat more than me!” And I know ita completely innocent to him but to me with an ed, it is awful! I instantally plan not to eat tomorrow to punish myself and hide in my room.
@@hwlsgrl I’m your auntie now and you’re beautiful exactly the way you are and who you are as a person is infinitely more precious than the number on the scale ❤️
as a person with a ED i love watching your channel cuz it has helped me realize the one cup of carrots and 1tbs of peanut butter only once a day isn't enough and hearing what is good and right to eat and how to make it balanced from you has helped me push a lot of my ED thoughts away thank you for doing what you do
One thing I’ve noticed on tik tok is often if you look for intuitive eating content, you very often are then brought ED content onto your FYP. Which is like the opposite of what you wanted to watch
it's bc people on ED tiktok tag their shit w intuitive eating... it's the same thing on tumblr. ED tumblr is starting to tag their shit with regular weight loss and gym tags.
Thank you Abbey ❤️ I suffered from binge eating disorder from the age of 11 to the age of 17-18, due to severe depression due to bullying in school. Around 17 and a half I went to a dietitian, who put me onto a restrictive diet and I became orthorexic, so much so I almost had a nervous breakdown because I didn't want to eat my 18th birthday cake (which I picked out months earlier and it was my favourite). It's been some years now and I'm doing so well, even losing weight without restricting, but for some years I was convinced it was all my fault I had failed the diet. So, seriously, thank you ❤️
It’s so interesting how different the TikTok algorithm can be for different people. I’m a regular TikTok user, and I (thankfully!!) never see any of this kind of content. Thanks for bringing it to my attention to look out for it!
Would you be able to do a series on diabetic meals? Especially breakfast ideas that aren’t always eggs? I’m really curious on how to improve nutrition with your hunger crunching combo while staying in a diabetic friendly mindset. Btw love your vids!
@@AbbeysKitchen omg yes please do abbey , if you do can you please also talk about diabetics trying to gain muscle. I’m prediabetic but I also want to gain muscle mass but I was told to be low carb :( please help . I know to build muscle you need high protein and carbs
@@AbbeysKitchen Thank you for the consideration! I’ve been type 1 Juvenile diabetic for 23 years and there is just so much information that is continusly changing for nutrition that it gets so difficult to remain in a diabetic friendly mindset and eating style. Thank you!
I’m honestly so thankful for Abbey! I started watching her while I was struggling with an ED relapse and of course did the whole “pshh doesn’t mean it’s not going to work for me” number, but now I can watch this and be really well informed. Not only that but I now eat like Abbey’s recommendations over the super unhealthy ED diet! So thank you so much Abbey for spreading the word, and love, around eating well for you & your body ❤️
Speaking of bad doctors, when I was seeing a psychiatrist around the time I was struggling with anorexia, he took my weight and said, "maybe lay off the carbs." I was underweight and had still been losing weight. Lol. Skipped dinner that night. Am good now though. This was a few years back
I had something similar. Gained a lot of weight really fast from medication and mentioned that it was trigerring me and causing me a lot of food stress. He said that it was probably a good thing. Then went to see someone else, and he tried to tell me that losing weight (the weight I gained FROM MEDICATION which is WHY I WAS THERE TO CHANGE MEDICATION) would fix my chronic mental health issues, because they weren't real I was just having low self esteem and 'you can't use medication to undo a healthy lifestyle.' Fucking disgusting. (Second one lost his medical lisence 2 weeks later, thank god)
A nutritionist recommended an 1100 calorie/ day for me a few years ago. It’s so hard to find intuitive nutrition and gentle nutrition anywhere else - even healthcare professionals. That’s why I watch you!
Same, and one recommended not to eat more than 2 pieces of fruit because theyre full of sugar, not to mention she thought three pieces of stuffed vine leaves was too big of a lunch!
that’s awful omg! I’m glad I found Abbey’s channel, I’m still in my ED but I watch her vids because she’s so “eat whatever you’d like, but if you’d like - here’s some healthier alternatives and options! but also don’t feel bad for treating yourself” which makes me feel so safe 🤍
I’m recovering from an ed, and I’m low key kind of glad I don’t have tiktok yet because it just seems like the perfect place to trigger myself and I don’t need that in my life. 😅
I both love and hate that I was so easily sold on those bars. But honestly they’re amazing. I cut them into pieces and freeze them so I can grab a variety when I want.
as someone with an ed tiktok is literally hell sometimes cause ed behaviour is so normalised and when u try to call it out people just yell at you for being ”sensitive” etc etc
I’m glad you touched on intermittent fasting not being right for everyone. I myself tried it and on some days I honestly wasn’t hungry until noon or 1 o’clock but on others it sucked because I’d be extra hungry around 9 or 10 but would be so focused on watching the clock to see when I could eat that I was miserable instead of listening to my own body.
Take a look at Eric Berg’s videos that touch on intermittent fasting. He always says that if you’re hungry, eat. But don’t eat if you’re not hungry, it’s ok to skip or delay a meal. Sounds as though you just shouldn’t be rigid about it but adjust from day to day if you think longer fasting periods might be beneficial. Just don’t force it. If you have any insulin resistance (the defining characteristic of Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes), gradually extending the natural fasting period while we sleep can help fix that because it reduces the time of insulin surges, giving the body a chance to gradually normalize and also to do some cleanup and repair work (autophagy). My natural pattern seems to be “intermittent fasting” because I often don’t want to eat for a long time after waking up. It isn’t uncommon for me to have one or two meals a day, but they are just larger than if I were eating more frequently and take me longer. I also have eaten several small simple meals a day when dealing with allergies or other conditions. I have trouble eating under stress (such as under a deadline) but know which foods I can eat even under those conditions without bothering me, in case I do get hungry. Any pattern can work for weight loss or maintaining weight. So really, just follow your appetite to decide when to eat, but eat good food when you do eat.
I find a fairly good "diet" is reducing processed foods and doing more home cooking. That allows me to enjoy foods that are filling and sate hunger while cutting out a lot of the added salts and sugars in processed foods. As an added bonus, it allows me to cut calories without starving myself.
Because of your channel, I was able to overcome my eating disorder *AND* many side affects that came with it. My digestive system is healthier than ever and I feel better than ever! :) Thank you so much for everything! You helped many others including myself realize how dangerous some or a lot of the things social media promotes.
I love how diets boil down to “eat more whole fruit and vegetable” and I’m over just like no. I do appreciate the way she’s explained in the past to get over that though.
There's a GP in my area who is (in)famous for his diet plan that he prescribed for patients......it starts with 2-4 weeks of eating only FIVE HUNDRED calories per day and doing absolutely nothing and then in the final stage he has them all the way up to (insert eye roll) 1200 per day for their maintenance phase.......it's disgusting and I think GPs should stay out of the dietary realm unless they also hold a degree as a dietitian or at the very least nutritionist certificate
It really depends where you are on TiKTok, some of the content is actually really good! But there is so much that is just way to easy for young kids to find. TH-cam is just as problematic but TH-cam has ways of protecting people from some of this type of content that is just so easy to find on TikTok . Not to mention that TikTok often takes down things that have no reasons to be taken down but, keeps up things that really need to be taken down. Also I always enjoy you Videos!
There is a fine line between helping people with ED's and shaming people with ED's. As a person with an ED I would fine this shaming if these were my tik tok videos. It would then send me into a spiral downwards.
I love your sensible approach. That is how I was brought up, my mum insisted on three balanced meals a day, fruit if we got hungry , biscuits and sweets were limited treats (and more enjoyable as result), soda and ice-cream ditto
my personal tip: seaweed lavers or roasted seaweed in general is AMAZING for snacks or a good addition to your meals. Im trying to recover from an eating disorder and i hope i can help you along the way. Stay safe
As someone who struggles with ARFID, yikes! My diet is heavily restricted and yet I still eat much more than that. I hope they can work through their disorder.
very true point about doctors fearing a little extra weight!! I could go into the doctor being 10lbs heavier than these girls and explaining ah been hardly eating/ i have a history with this and they are just like "well careful you arent going to be happy with your body if you gain weight" which then would become my reality. also killer wardrobe, u are so cool
So true ! I went to my doctor to complain about my new pill she gave my because my acne was worse. I was at a healthy BMI but heavier than when I last saw her (and 40% of that weight gain was because of said pill). She said I had to eat healthier and lose weight and everything would go back to normal (dismissing completely my ed relapse)
I went to the doctor at 15 to ask for help with weight loss because the depo shot had made me gain around 60 lbs. She told me I was just eating too much and not moving enough so she just wasn't going to help me. I didn't have the confidence to tell her that I was barely eating and exercising in excess.
"Brocolli is not a snack" yes it is, frozen brocolli, frozen strawberries and frozen peas are super delicious. when i eat snacks its not to keep myself full its mostly for taste
Cookies in nut butter is such a fantastic combo! I'm allergic to so many foods so I'm a fan of the Simple Mills crunch cookies and if you dunk them in almond butter it's so yummy and makes them so much more satiating for a quick after dinner snack/dessert!

I’ve gone through seasons of binge eating as well as seasons of starvation and ultimately it’s led to me being very overweight and very unhappy. So now I am trying to healthily lose weight eating no less than 1000 calories a day and no more than 2000. The weight loss has been painstakingly slow but I’m trying to carry the same energy level of enthusiasm for losing weight slowly as I have anger towards myself for gaining

this video was randomly recommended to me and im so glad i watched it. i want to really thank you because i disregarded all of my thoughts about having an ed and even seeking help thinking that i dont have it for so long. you put a trigger warning at the beginning of the video and i was like "i dont need a tw since i dont have an eating disorder" and watching you say those people should add this and that to their diet has caught me thinking how i could never add any of the foods you said because id just feel very "guilty" if i ate it while not feeling like binging on food. i started to feel intense discomfort and even stress about thinking that if i want to be healthy i need to add so many foods into my diet. this video made me feel so bad and scared for myself but at the same time im so grateful for stumbling upon your video.
I think it depends on your algorithm, I follow some amazing dietitians that always talk about recognizing your hunger cues and being kind to your body. My feed is not big on diet culture or restrictions at all.
Omg, this was so helpful to me. I have lost 21 pounds in four months by calorie counting. I thought ok I'm gonna decrease my calories even more 3 weeks ago. I noticed my weight going up. I decided to go back to the higher daily caloric intake and I'm back on track. I'm down 1 pound for this week. I started weighing in at 232 I'm currently 208. I lost this weight eating 1550 calories a day. Trying to mk sure I included veggies, fresh fruit and I even started loving Greek yogurt fruit on bottom as a snack. I've learned as long as I'm eating things from most food groups eating the correct portion sizes. I can keep this up. Your channel is so helpful for someone like me tfs.

I have a feeling some of these people who say "this is how much my doctor recommends me" are saying that just to shut up the people who are saying "hey, you are definitely NOT eating enough". They're likely lying and saying that just to "please" those who have genuine concerns about their physical health so they can happily continue their starvation diets.
I really liked how you approached the topic. I’m not sure how else to elaborate but I really just liked how cautious and sympathetic you were with EDs.
When I was in HS my diet consisted of 1 meal a day. Sometimes it was moms home cooked meal or sometimes it was just a cup noodles. I was 18 and weighed 85lbs. My mom took me to the doctor once because I hadn't gotten my period in 6 months and they told me to eat a stick of butter with all my meals.... by the time I graduated HS I was now binge eating everything. Fast forward 10 years. I'm finally starting to learn about a sustainable realistic diet. What a journey

As someone with PCOS AND a binge eating disorder, it SUCKS and diet promotions are a trigger. I remember before my official diagnosis, I was at my heaviest point and trying so hard to eat well and I exercised so hard. But I was lucky to lose a few pounds (And I needed to lose a lot more than just a few pounds) which would come right back within a week with one screw up and I would have to start over. I remember trying to tell my doctor that I was having trouble losing weight and had an eating disorder, and they just told me to eat less and work out more even though I practically went anorexic and was working my ass off at the gym. Fortunately, I was eventually able to get the PCOS diagnosis and started treatment for it. I have better doctors and am seeing a dietitian who is helping me with my relationship with food. I was also put on meds so that my body can work more how its supposed to and weight loss would actually be possible Diet culture is bullshit. And doctors don't always know what they're talking about.
Also a lot of what I see is people in ED recovery eating especially when they're scared to eat and I think it's great for them to hold themselves accountable, and to get encouragement to keep on the recovery road
i've had to make myself a breakfast person to control my binging , i'm not hungry till like 11 then by then i'm STARVING and end up making poor food choices, eating breakfast sets me up for success
Yep for those who have had bariatric surgery a lot of the dieticians recommend being on 800-1000 for years the best thing I ever did was hire a regular dietitian and I have a regular diet now not doing damage to my body.
It's so helpful ! We are getting lost with all the misinformation that is out there. I love your way to approach this without judging or bitching. Just facts to help us grow. Love it !
Some dietitians are really part of the problem. I was forced to see one by my parents as a teenager because they wanted me to lose weight when I gained some after starting my recovery from an ED - I was at a healthy weight but my parents are problematic people - and the dietitian refused to believe I had had an ED and prescribed me a diet which included skipping either dinner or breakfast a few times a week, having only one piece of fruit a day and only for breakfast, and then no oranges, tangerines, melon, dairy, any kind of seeds, cabbage, lettuce, soy, corn, table sugar, broccoli, coffee, tomatoes, and potatoes... Why?? What was wrong with these foods?
Abbey, you should review Ro Mitchell's videos! She is amazing! She's a young woman recovering from anorexia and she is doing so great. She's doing "All In" and I've never felt prouder of someone I don't really know.
there's a woman who literally just spouts mean-spo and uses 2nd person to insult whoever's watching, worst of all she doesn't even put trigger warnings, not on her profile, not on her videos, not in captions, nothing. people defend her saying "she's talking about herself in the video"
There has always been bad diet advice. It used to be listed in the classified ads of the newspaper. The problem today is teenagers can log into TikTok and just find it. I have noticed with TikTok though, if you start searching for more informative or positive things, the algorithm improves. I now see more over the age of 30 content just about fashion and hair.
It's these type of videos and the "trying kpop diet for 3 days" YT videos that grind my gears. The simplest mind-shift that I made that helped me was the goal to be healthy as opposed to losing weight. That shift has helped me immensely and I'm so much healthier, I eat better, quality foods and my body is happier. Weight loss has been a by-product of that but it hasn't been the focus.
I went to a GI specialist for a VALID issue and that “doctor” spent the appointment ignoring my questions, giving me her preprinted keto diet bullshit and getting upset when I canceled her follow up
Me, who had MULTIPLE eating disorders as a teen, listening to all of this: OH. ....oh. Oh, so that's why I have had such a hard time for the past FIFTEEN TO TWENTY YEARS after my EDs. Mmk. Mmk. This explains so much, and I wish I could tell these young TikTokers what they're setting themselves up for later on in life. Like, years on later on in life.
I agree. My ED didn't get really bad until my doctor and nutritionist team told me to stick to 1200 calories a day and to cut all of my starches down to 1 serving a day. They also told me not to eat rice because of an enzyme... Now 2 years later i literally feel lile giving up because i Dont know what is truely healthy and not. I know i am about 100 lbs over weight but it just made it all worse.

@@CycleCoachAcademy I wish I understood it better. All i really know about it is eat what you want. Like allowing yourself to have all kinds of things. I know that moderation is key but i think my biggest struggle is knowing i am getting in the right kinds of nutrients and enough of them. I have had to unlearn 20 years worth of bad advice whether it was from doctors or my parents. So it is slow learning
I have adhd and take meds that suppress my appetite so these vids remind me a lot of the days when I ate only a granola bar a day, then binged all weekend. I don’t think I have an eating disorder but it def gave me body dysmorphia or seriously warped body image and bad eating habits and now I skip my meds just so I can remember to eat. Also a few months ago I went on prednisone and it caused a 2 month period where I ate 6 giant meals a day. Idk how to stop flip flopping and I’m jus trynna get better and eat like a normal person
the pred hunger is real.. gained 10kg or more being on a high dose (100-40mg/day) for a year.. (yes that is long, too long actually!! but it was a struggle finding another medication for the illness I have)
6:20 the comment was surprisingly difficult for me. I lost a lot of weight because I had zero appetite and my hunger cues disappeared (this is mental health related). I struggle to eat still. I think coming from not eating, eating a lot of “fun” processed foods is actually great progress. Because processed food is heaps better than no food and when you are young and have a difficult relationship with food, cooking your own food (even rather processed food) is a huge challenge. So being at a point where she eats enough calories to sustain her body each day, is moving in the right direction (even though still a sign of disordered eating).
I really love how sensible you are both in your videos and responding to comments. You seem to be a truly empathetic and kind person. Wait, can i use empathetic like that? English is confusing
Thank you for acknowledging that intermittent fasting works for some people and aren't trashing it as if it's always a cover for an eating disorder, like I've seen some people do
A pack of gusher is also 80 calories and almost identical nutrition in case anyone was wondering, but those annie's fruit snacks are surprisingly good. I still prefer the texture of gusher though.
Yeah, my nutritionist told me I need to eat 1200 cals a day to lose weight, plus 8k steps a day minimum. And then, eat a bunch of Lean Cuisines. Lol. I tried to tell her a lot of my weight issues were related to physical and mental health problems, and it was just completely ignored. I wanted help developing a better diet and habits, not told to just eat less. I’m at a loss.
3 shrimp is what I eat when mom ask me to taste the recipe while it's almost cooked to check salt and stuff
Exactly! What the hell will 3 shrimp do?

My brother's girlfriend came crying to me saying that she will never be as skinny and beautiful as the girls on tiktok. It's so heartbreaking.
It is so upsetting to see 🙁
God that's awful... And never mind that there's filters and all sorts on those videos, none of those girls look healthy. It's so so hard not to get sucked into that self loathing place, but man is it heartbreaking to see it happen to someone else.
:(
They do a lot of exercise and some of them are just naturally skinny
As someone with an eating disorder, it's truly heartbreaking to see media romanticize EDs(typically anorexia) and promote them, I hope TikTok gets taken down
I'm finna say it one last damn time: LOSING 6 POUNDS IN A WEEK IS NOT HEALTHY. It's also not an easy thing to do in a sustainable fashion.
Yup, totally!
It really isn't safe! I mean obviously if you're obese and you're planning on having surgery there are special diets that doctors will give you but those diets are NOT for long term use. This is seriously scary.
tbf, it's mostly water weight when you lose that fast. It's not actually body fat.
@@AMortalDothApproach true, but not always. Not eating and drinking water then you’re losing both water weight and actual body fat.
*losing six pounds in a week the way the video showed is unhealthy****
You can lose a lot of weight in a week and it’s still very healthy.
I wish I could've seen Abby talk about these diets when I was 14, it would've changed so many things in my life for the better.
I’m also 14, and started working out and eating healthier but not in a good way. I’m glad I started researching more and finding out what was true and what wasn’t. I’m glad I found help and of course Abbey Sharp! 😊
I'm so glad you are doing better now! I understand it can be very upsetting to see this type of content
I am impressed that you were able to realize that some girls on TikTok are not best suited to educate you on proper diet and or weight management and sought out a professional like Abbey. That was a very wise decision. Good for you!

Proud of you
Yaaay! I am also in recovery and I know how tempting it can be to just give in to those ED-demons, so I‘m super proud of you for doing what‘s best for you in your recovery process!! I wish you all the best and a happy life filled with yummy foods and ZERO guilt 💖

That's incredible that you recognized the triggers and did something about it! Congratulations!
That's amazing! I'm proud of your progress.
As someone with a history of ED, I had to delete TikTok due to the algorithm only showing me ED promoting content. Definitely effective me negatively before I realized the cause and deleted the app.
That's wonderful that you were able to make a change to positively impact your health!
I totally understand, it can be very triggering
Omg same

That's shocking. How sickening that that happened! 😓
I used to only allow myself to eat egg whites, and that’s like the most flavorless part 😂 I can’t even eat under 1400 nowadays because it makes me feel crappy… idk if it’s because I used to starve myself and if my calories drop too low my body is just like WTF NO NOT AGAIN lol
same! and it's taken me more than five years to treat my vitamins and mineral deficiencies
same here,hope to get better!

I understand this can be very hard
100% agree, my eating disorder developed at the start of lockdown/covid and I got my "tips" at the beginning from tiktok. now the world is opening back up and I'm in a deep hole of restriction and depression
I agree here. The whole app was becoming damaging for my mental health and I had to take it off of my phone for my sake.
Growing up, my parents never let me have any sort of energy drink. Now I’m glad they made that choice.

On the other side of tiktok, people thinking eating large amounts of very very unhealthy foods as a staple is.. relatable? Cute?
Wow, that is so upsetting. I'm sorry for your experience

I'm so glad you enjoy them!
as someone with an ed tiktok is literally hell sometimes cause ed behaviour is so normalised and when u try to call it out people just yell at you for being ”sensitive” etc etc
For sure! Thanks for sharing your experience with this
Take a look at Eric Berg’s videos that touch on intermittent fasting.
I’m kind of proud of myself that i don’t get these kind of videos on my fyp, tiktok knows i don’t care about losing weight anymore 🥰
That's great!
Awesome! It's annoying that when I'm following good recovery channels and algorithms think I want to see high restriction accountability vlogs.
Thank you so much for everything!
Wow, that is so upsetting
It really depends where you are on TiKTok, some of the content is actually really good! But there is so much that is just way to easy for young kids to find.
TH-cam is just as problematic but TH-cam has ways of protecting people from some of this type of content that is just so easy to find on TikTok .
Not to mention that TikTok often takes down things that have no reasons to be taken down but, keeps up things that really need to be taken down.

And also booktoc
Facts. I'm personally biased towards wlw tik tok
I'll have to watch some of those!
@TiradeBombastic All of it is toxic. Just stay away from it. There’s a reason it’s been banned in so many countries. It was designed to harm people.
If you can find frog and oatmeal tiktok, they are so worth it
As someone who struggles with ARFID, yikes!
Yes totally. And thank you!
Great idea!
Oooo definitely trying this! Thanks for posting this tip!
@@phoebe_272 It's one of my favorite snacks! Sometimes I'll also have it for like a super quick breakfast with a piece of fruit! Sprinkle some hemp hearts on the nut butter and add a cup of tea and you're set for your morning!!
Abbey, you and your content are just the best. Thank you for your transparency and honesty which is often lacking in most platforms these days, seriously thank you, and keep it up!
10:38 there’s no way that girl at 115 pounds maintenance calories are 2.000 a day, I’m 123 and mine are like 1.500
hey abbey, i just wanted to tell you that i really enjoy your content and its quality lately:) you're just a really sympathetic and pleasant woman
Thank you so much, so glad you enjoy it!
I'm sorry you've had a negative experience, I hope you are doing better now. I have a video on my channel about weight loss that you might find helpful: th-cam.com/video/sDkwXmEZ0NY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AbbeySharp
this video was randomly recommended to me and im so glad i watched it. i want to really thank you because i disregarded all of my thoughts about having an ed and even seeking help thinking that i dont have it for so long. you put a trigger warning at the beginning of the video and i was like "i dont need a tw since i dont have an eating disorder" and watching you say those people should add this and that to their diet has caught me thinking how i could never add any of the foods you said because id just feel very "guilty" if i ate it while not feeling like binging on food. i started to feel intense discomfort and even stress about thinking that if i want to be healthy i need to add so many foods into my diet.
this video made me feel so bad and scared for myself but at the same time im so grateful for stumbling upon your video.
I don't have tiktok but from what I've heard it gives me big 2012 tumblr vibes, sometimes it sounds even more toxic than tumblr was.
Yup, it is very concerning
I'm glad it's helpful for you!
I would really appreciate it Abbey if you do a video on ‘How to effectively lose weight without any restrictions or extreme dieting’ just a few very helpful tips (like various food items excellent for overall health and that aids in weight loss)

@@AbbeysKitchen Thank you :) ❤️❤️
At this point, I've seen so many videos about what is wrong with Tik Tok, but since it's all user-submitted, I now just silently judge Tik Tok users.
I’m recovering from anorexia and a doctor said “don’t just start eating 3 meals a day because you will gain weight really fast and then you’ll have a new problem to deal with .”
Omg horrible! This type of people should have their licence taken away!
@@coralecho2485 I agree. It set me back so much. I knew I couldn’t trust myself at that point but thought I could surely trust a “professional”. I can only imagine how many other people were told that by him.
Whaatt. Thats horrible
This is good advice tho. I was living somewhere I couldn’t cook and was only eating once a day and when I moved into my own apartment and started cooking again, I def gained like 40 lbs very quickly eating too much 3x a day.
Did you even read her message? Telling someone with anorexia that gaining weight is "bad" is terrible and life-threatening advice.
thank you thank you thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gosh young people are so so so lucky to have someone like you to look up to, what you do is SO important !!!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Three shrimp is less than I would eat, and I'm allergic to crustaceans! (Kidding, three shrimp would kill me, but you get the point)
tiktok makes me feel guilty about eating “too much” i feel gross for literally eating a normal meal. the thing is tho i don’t use tiktok cuz of this exact reason but this shit still finds itself to me on instagram reels and it’s fucking frustrating. i don’t want to feel guilty about eating man i’m just tryna survive
Possibly
Abbey! I love you! I love watching your videos! I realized I can eat more than I am and still be healthy and beautiful!! For the longest time I've been eating 1200-1300 calories a day and I've never thought I had an ED because I never puked or starved, but I have been hyper fixated on what I've been eating pretty much since 4th grade and I'm 27 now. I'm starting to slowly get more food and I feel great and I'm finally losing weight even though I'm eating more! I'm very happy with my body these days after watching you! You're awesome! I just want to thank you!! I'm not too thin but getting enough calories to build muscle from my workouts and everything! I just feel so blessed to have found your channel
When I'm struggling to get in fruit servings I like to keep those drinkable applesauce pouches on hand. I feel like they're decent in a pinch and you actually get some fruit unlike with the gummies lol
Applesauce is cheap and tastes good and keeps well. I’m a college student haha.
I steal them from my 6 year old sometimes when I want a quick on the go snack.
Great idea!
Omg LOVED those while in college. Cheap, easy to eat, and yummy.
why not just eat an actual apple. why would there be a struggle with that.
I was also put on meds so that my body can work more how its supposed to and weight loss would actually be possible
Diet culture is bullshit.
Love it !
Would love to see you review 'Everything Nina Dobrev eats in a day'
On my list!
@@AbbeysKitchen I trust you've heard this name a million times, but we will eat up a Hitomi Mochizuki reveiw video 👀
@@lemon7107 I'm so curious to hear her opinion
Oh no! That sounds terrible. I'm so sorry you had a negative experience!
Abbey, you should review Ro Mitchell's videos! She is amazing! She's a young woman recovering from anorexia and she is doing so great. She's doing "All In" and I've never felt prouder of someone I don't really know.
I'll have a look!
Yes, she’s incredibly comforting and amazing !
Yes. She is wonderful :)
It wouldn't be helpful to anyone for their intake to be analysed when they're in recovery from an ED... It's far too complex
@@ivar3086 yes, of course, I honestly think we shouldn't analyse it.
there's a woman who literally just spouts mean-spo and uses 2nd person to insult whoever's watching, worst of all she doesn't even put trigger warnings, not on her profile, not on her videos, not in captions, nothing. people defend her saying "she's talking about herself in the video"
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much for sharing this very important information! Disordered eating is a health concern that deserves more attention.
I'm glad it's helpful!
Totally, they are very concerning to see. Glad that's working for you!
K-Pop diet? Good Lord. Just the name sounds hellish. Those K Pop stars are practically starved.
I went to a GI specialist for a VALID issue and that “doctor” spent the appointment ignoring my questions, giving me her preprinted keto diet bullshit and getting upset when I canceled her follow up
I'm sorry for your experience!
Giving you a big hug! It can be super confusing with lots of recommendations and all the internet noise. Do you feel like you understand intuitive eating?
@@CycleCoachAcademy I wish I understood it better. All i really know about it is eat what you want. Like allowing yourself to have all kinds of things. I know that moderation is key but i think my biggest struggle is knowing i am getting in the right kinds of nutrients and enough of them. I have had to unlearn 20 years worth of bad advice whether it was from doctors or my parents. So it is slow learning
Kimberly Brown it is a slow process. Be patient with your body. It takes a while for the body’s intelligence to come back online after harsh diets. 💗
I'm sorry for your experience. I hope my videos are helpful at all for your journey ❤️
@@AbbeysKitchen ty🥺 and yes your vids are helping me a lot)))

the pred hunger is real.. gained 10kg or more being on a high dose (100-40mg/day) for a year.. (yes that is long, too long actually!! but it was a struggle finding another medication for the illness I have)
and this is why i don’t have a tiktok account…
I hope those tiktokers see this video, the only thing that could heal them
tbh i don't think that this video could actually heal them since eating disorders/disorderd eating behaviours are always caused by bigger problems:((
I hope they see it too
Not only they are not eating enough, they are not even getting any nutrient, little veggies and fruit??
*Inner thought* "gonna go look at some poor or dangerous diets and fads out of curiosity."

Wow!
