I also believe that Sarah was the most evil out of the three. She despised Jessie from the start, intended to drink her blood first and aggressively attacked her first in the final scene in the mansion. She also believed when the photographer asked her to replace that other model that eating Jessie truly paid off. U could see the satisfying emotion in her face.
Yer Sarah definitely gained the most out of the three by consuming Jessie, i'm always left wondering what became of her and Ruby when the credits roll
I enjoyed the analysis, but there's something that stood out for me during the entire movie that you didn't mention. The Neon Demon can also be seen as a way to show what it feels like to be a woman in a beauty obsessed society. As the designer says "Beauty isn't everything, it's the only thing", and specially women are pressured into pursuing beauty as a means of sucess, regarless if they are in the modeling industry or not. And if you are beautiful, like Jesse, you are always a target. Whether it is a man, a cougar, other women who see you as competition, you are always in danger in some way. And even when you think you have friend, like Ruby, they can just be another threat.
In a way, this movie also reminds me of Junji Ito's Tomie, in which a girl is so beautiful she drives everyone around her insane and people constantly try to kill her because of her beauty.
Beatriz Barrett OMG thank you, so many of these film critics are men who fail to realise their experience in this world is far from the only one, + that a lot of films explore themes + ideas that are specific to female struggles + oppression. too bad.
Damn, the Tomie comparison is actually so cool. She was eaten a couple of times too.
Men are pressured by masculine beauty as vvell.
Extremely accurate!!! Thank you for pointing that out!!!
Which Tomie movie? The 1998 version? Isn't it a movie series?
You expect witches to have otherworldly powers but that's not the case. They ritualistically take Jessie's life, and Ruby's tattoos are actually occult in nature. She's more than likely the witch and the two models are just new to the craft and following orders. And in the script it alludes to witchcraft a lot more.
Yea I agree but then they're not real witches. They are just crazy beauty obssessed women that mess around with the occult lol
Actually they ARE real witches as supernatural witches never existed. Just religious zealots who labeled people they wanted to eliminate as witches and those delusional people who actually believed in witchcraft. These three women were cannibals and were a symbol of how the modelling industry devours the innocence of those who dare to play the game.
Yea but by that logic, if someone went around dressing like a vampire and doing things that a vampire would do, would you label them as a REAL vampire? I wouldn't.. i would label that person as a person who is just obsessed with vampire lore and wishes he was one... because they're not immortal, they can't shapeshift into a bat, etc.. vampires and witches might not exist in real life but they can most certainly exist in the movie realm
if they really where supernatural witches the whole plot would be quite a bit weaker. Maybe thats the reason they scrappet that idea, aparently present in the script. The message that a human can do such evil and insane deed us far more unsettling. In fact i took the "blood-scene" that, apparently many took damned serious as "yet another dreamsequence". So in my perseption that didnt even happen for real. Butt hey. What do i know...
Yes Misfit Pond, if someone drinks another person's blood, they are a vampire. And a cannibal and just plain gross/nuts. We have to shrug off these supernatural trappings.
The triangle is about perfection too! It is said to be the most perfect architectural shape. I love this movie
I thought the honeycomb structure took that status
The numerous references to the moon imply some witchcraft....
I like to think that the strobe light show at the party was shot to show that you can't see the three women's intentions, their faces are hard to see in the lights. Next I believe the cougar was also foreshadowing, since we see the cougar in Ruby's home later. Also the color gold, I think represents vanity too. Jack forces the gold paint onto Jesse just like the modeling industry would force vanity on its models, and after Jesse "transforms", she starts wearing gold. The moon I think was a symbol of Jessie's safety; as a big round eye it watched over her as a child, and it's not present when she looks at the sky from the pool, maybe showing how Jesse has lost everyone (ruby, dean, moon) who cared about her due to her vanity. Finally I thought when Gigi gets sick it's because her unnatural beauty rejects Jessie's natural beauty.
I really liked this analysis, it made me realize things I hadn't before. I'm glad you liked the movie too, it's my guilty pleasure movie hahah
everything you said is perfectly valid and I agree lol beautiful comment.! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and the film :)
The Misfit Pond you actually replied! And thank you :D
Of course! I try to reply to all my subscribers lol if this channel gets big, I probably can't guarantee that anymore but I'll still do my best ;)
kittypie ud
kittypie never thought about that Gigi theory. Makes so much sense now.
My theory for this movie is that the triangle in Neon Demon represents the traits of the Dark Triad.
Gigi=Narcissism (incredibly obsessed with her own looks/gets plastic surgery multiple times/brags)
Ruby= Machiavellism (is nice to Jessie, but only out of self interest)
and Sarah=psychopathy (I think the best example of this is that last shot)
I am a different person after watching this movie. It made me a reaction.
About what is being beautiful - and if you are only an empty beautiful dead corpse, you mean nothing anyways (to you or others)
Ego grows when a child looks at the mirror for the first time - but true beauty is when you mirror yourself into others.
It really got me thinking, that, you are only true beautiful when you love other people.
I'm glad this film was able to reach you on that level. This film got to me as well. The first film that really changed me as a person was A Clockwork Orange back when I was 16. If you enjoyed my analysis, please SUB to my channel for more content! :)
That's kinda true
This movie made me more weary of people around me, and that I should trust myself more and not wonder about the other person's feelings if I suspect them of something
I loved how Gigi says she had her ears pinned so she could wear a ponytail; then in the very next scene Jesse is wearing a ponytail 😆
I think your in-depth analysis here is excellent. The only thing I personally disagree with is the assertion that Gigi, Sarah and Ruby aren't meant to be witches or vampires, but maybe that's just from me reading the original script, where Ruby has a lot of literature on witchcraft and its actually outright stated that the three of them hunted down a beautiful virgin to make themselves beautiful. Even before reading the first draft, however, I was getting some strong Elizabeth Báthory vibes, and I think that was deliberate- particularly given that Sarah is suddenly noticed at the end and chosen over another model. But that's my personal interpretation. Again, excellent analysis.
Thanks man I appreciate your comment. I believe I did say that I agree that they are performing witch-like rituals and are definitly intending to be women of the occult. I just believe that they dont really possess otherworldy powers or anything like that. Thank you for your input!
@@TheMisfitPond i’m late here but i think that there is a supernatural part in the film that is very subtle and not in-your-face, which is the way the two girls start having success right after eating jessie, i know it might seem like a coincidence but the two models in the first half of the film are not really successful and this is shown in many occasions. In the last scene of the film instead the photographer immediately notices the model who was sitting casually on the sofa.
I watch this because i want to know another person's opinions about the movie but if you are very lazy to watch 2 hour movie and get bored in this kind of art movies this video is perfect for you as well. This is real Lolita shit.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! :) Real Lolita Shit.! "room 214. gotta be seen!"
I initially didn’t notice the swastika wallpaper symbolising ‘body fascism’ in the movie, which is my favourite ever 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I like your interpretation of the DEMON DANCE scene. I sort of think of it as these girls are symbolically introducing her to the world of fashion, like you said, but this is also Jesse's first step into falling for the lust and narcissism. DEMON DANCE is her being exposed to the treasures of this, while we must know that she is being led to "signing a deal with the Devil".
Thanks man! And yes I totally agree with what you said!
I do feel Ruby cared for and genuinely wanted to keep Jessie safe but the more she saw she couldn’t have her the more she started to slip until Jessie openly rejected Ruby, then she went full on crazy
Dude, nice comprehensive analysis mang... it's almost half the length of the movie, respect.
haha thanks man I appreciate that! I have a Full Film Analysis for Moonlight that I'll be uploading in an hour or so, if you're interested in that.
I think that Sara replaced the other model for the shoot at the end because whatever they were doing worked. Her beauty has been re-invigorated by the consumption of Jesse. Even if it just effected her confidence, and wasn't magic, the ritual cannibalism seems to have worked, presumably because of Sara's natural beauty.
Gigi on the other hand, isn't reinvigorated. Presumably because her beauty is manufactured.
One further thought for you. Jesse refers to the moon as a giant eye looking at her. Ruby's blood scene is in full view of the moon. Sara consumes Jesse's eye after Gigi couldn't metabolize it. This might be Refn just dropping similar beats in the hopes that people will think he is deep, but I'm sure that it's more deliberate than that.
it could also be symbolism in that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"?
the neon demon and the idea of casting elle fanning was honestly perfect (at least to me). she was luminous, breathtaking, scary and hypnotic. i know some of you will not agree with me because you'll say "she's not pretty enough" or "those three girls were prettier than her" but let's not forget ruby was a makeup artist not a model, sarah was obviously pretty but she's jaded because she's been in the fashion industry for so long and gigi went through a lot of surgery so she's a fake after all and i do think fanning is pretty especially being legit 16 years old that time but the good thing about casting her is that she has that classic aura, i don't know but she just gave me an 80's or 90's beauty vibe that's why this film will be a classic because of her, but what also works was the transition of her voice. it changes throughout the film and it felt like it doesn't came from a 16 years old girl anymore. this was just my opinion, i just really think she's that beautiful and such a great actress. she is criminally underrated. i've been watching her films since 2011 and she's truly an actress of her generation, i can't believe how people slept on her but after all the work she's done, i'm glad she's now got her golden globe nomination. oscar you're next.
ok the love and hate for how they view elle fanning as jesse was actually a good thing. there's some people who agreed she's beautiful and there's people who didn't but that's the point because we are part of the cast as well. we are judging her success. everyone who didn't agree to her beauty was like sarah and gigi. we never read their mind but it's obvi they're saying that "oh, she isn't that beautiful", "that should've been me" and that's also what the audience sees about jesse too. they're questioning on how the hell is she getting all of these but no matter how they all judge her, she's not gonna care about it and she's just gonna keep thriving to remain at the top and that's how jesse made sarah and gigi mad along with the hatred of the audience. somehow, we who agreed to her beauty keeps on supporting her because we saw her as someone who deserves to be getting all of these. and even though she went narcissistic, we all know she became a bad person but she's not that evil because she's young and it's just her being in limelight that's why everything went through her head. despite that, we still root for her especially when she's now being chased and when she died, a part of us died too because yes she can be overthrown but she didn't deserved to be tortured. so yeah, enough drama. i'd just say that this film really was powerful and the gold paint shoot and the runway scene will remain superior to me. elle fanning, jena malone, bella heathcote and abbey lee was everything. THE NEON DEMON IS A MASTERPIECE AND A CLASSIC. thank you misfit fond for this analysis.
I think you're right. The reason they envy Jesse's beauty so much is because it's pure and radiates from inside, as well. Jaded is a good juxtaposition for Gigi and Sarah vs. Jesse. All they have left is aesthetic beauty (which is beginning to fade) and therefore they find Jesse to be a threat.
"Real lolita shit" lmao
This movie is damn underrated, dumbass people just don't understand these kind of art house movies. I swear to god! if Nicolas is keep making these kind of movies then someday people will consider him as the next generation Stanley Kubrick
One thing: when she was desinfecting her hand, that was clearly peroxide. Just from the way it foamed up which is a common reaction of hydrogen peroxide with blood. Otherwise, wonderful review
Great analysis. Also, I think the mirrors represent the fragmented personalities involved with entertainment/media
I really liked the end credit scene with the Sia song. Throughout the entire film we only see artificial, manmade setttings. And then there's this sudden shot of a desert, which completely cought me out of nowhere. For me it seemed like a goodbye from Refn, like: "Thanks for visiting my world, now welcome back to yours". And even this hostile place of a desert seemed to me more natural and welcoming than all the cold and stylistic sets from the movie. For me the Sia song highlighs this cut for it is more "melodic" and "conventional" (don't know how to express this any better) than the rest of the score.
In addition to that we see, who I assume is Jessie, walking through this desert, which for me can also symbolize a lot of things. E.g. it could mean that she really was, as the designer said, a diamond in a sea of glass; or maybe it shows that after her death, her beauty is meaningless, as she wanders through a hell (the desert), where no one can admire her beauty, highlighted by the fact that we dont't see her face in this scene.
I thought it was Sara walking through the desert cause it was the same jacket she wore to the shoot while waiting for Gigi and her hair was wavy from taking out the braids
That was some intense analysis... Can't believe I watched the whole thing without forwarding even a second...
Im so glad to hear that you found my analysis engaging. Thank you so much
The Misfit Pond I know it's juvenile of me to ask but is that your voice in the video....?
Shabeena Khan yes it is lol that’s not juvenile
The Misfit Pond I found it refreshing to hear an actual person speaking and not some robotic voice explaining strictly.... U seem to have a talent to explain well... This is the first video I saw of yours and looking forward to seeing them all... Good work and good luck....
Shabeena Khan wow thank you so much that truly means a lot ! cause that’s what I was going for lol I hope you find enjoyment in the rest of my analysis videos
I just wanna say that I think it's awesome that my video has hit 1,000 views! Thank you to everybody who liked it and shared it! :)
Ruby interjects that she doesn't mind staying because she's worried the photographer will assault her as they often do.
filmNdestroy wow. That’s probably more accurate than what I said lol
Actually, I think we're both right! The initial tension for me was worrying that he was going to assault her, which is what I thought Ruby was worried about too. But at the end we realize that Ruby was never trying to protect Jesse, she was obsessed with her. So maybe she wasn't worried that he would assault her for Jesse's wellbeing, but she was jealous about it!
Anyway, great analysis. Thank you for giving me so much to think about with this film. Beautifully done!
I thought that too but when Jessie implies that Ruby just laughs
This movie is totally an evil ritual. Sick movie.
No it’s not its a film about reality
Reinforced by the fact that Abbey Lee is really a feminine young man. “Her” bio says she was in and out of the hospital during her younger years. Three guesses why. VS supermodel without a gender change? No way.
Jewelz Satan is real too.
🍕🌭🍕🌭🍕🌭
@@AcornHillHomesteadwhat are you even saying right now
I like the parallels with the pool shots; of the clear upshot of Jessie elegantly on the diving board standing above the empty pool like a goddess, and then Gigi and Sarah standing by the edge of the filled pool in a similar shot where they are now taking the place of Jessie but the image is warped and wavy with the water instead of clear and still and Gigi is losing it when the red light, like the pyramid, is now on her because she can't take it.
Each of the three women get what they want from consuming Jessie; Ruby getting the sexual gratification Jessie denied her symbolized with all the blood coming out of her vagina, Sarah being chosen by the photographer when she was denied before because of Jessie, and Gigi makes herself beautiful *on the inside* wanting to make her beauty more genuine, but just like her outer beauty, the inner beauty is *manufactured* and false. The eye is the only thing she can cough up because she wanted people to *see* her beauty on the inside but she can't handle the natural force of nature that is Jessie's beauty and so she goes under the knife one last time to fix it. Sarah keeps moving forward because she can handle the twisted literal *beauty in the eye of the beholder.*
30:05 - My take on the feline predator thing was basically a foreshadowing of Jesse's demise. When she walked passed the stuffed cat at that point (+ the "dead" smily) i knew she is going to be hunted down. + as said it is not the house of any of the models. So its also not their stuffed cat.
As for the triangles: I first thought that its a foreshadowing of "bad things comming" since a triangle (standing on 1 of the corners) can be used as a symbol of satan (because it shares similarities with a goats head (the corner on which it stands on would be the chin and the other 2 corners would be the horns). Throughout this movie the triangle is shown in different poses and, as said i thought that when it turned on 1 corner it meant something bad is about to take place. However, i do like your take on the triangle more. Essentially representing a pyramid which you "have to" climb no matter what, in represented society... maybe both theories have something true about it, though ^^
I got vibes of a lot of this symbolism during the film, but it was really nice to have it neatly lined up. I already liked it, but this made me like it more. :D
That really means a lot thank you :)
yes, the cougar was in her hotel room earlier, but the stuffed animal at jesse's house is a leopard, not a cougar
Love this movie! One thing to mention: when her agent is warning her that people might call her fat, that’s not a good-natured warning, it’s her telling Jesse to lose weight. 6:40
I love that you compared Refn's work to Kubrick. This film especially reminded me so much of clockwork orange 🧡 I appreciate the nod to glamorous psychopathy in this film. It's a different perspective of that, from the perspective of being woman. I wonder if Refn made it with Kubrick's work in mind as inspiration?
*Literally every scene in the film*
The Misfit Pond:
This is one of my favorite scenes, because...
I love the shining reference. Ruby says her lipstick is called redrum. Which is what the kid writes with lipstick on the wall in the Shining. Then she uses that lipstick to draw the pictures of dead smiley faces to foreshadow Jesse's death.
I took the Cougar in the house as a symbol of danger. Since it was invading her room before and she could have been harmed if she went inside. But now she is inside, trapped with the danger
The mountain lion is possibly Ruby or Ruby's familiar
Beauty is not everything. As someone who is constantly praised by my looks, I find every compliment empty.. You dont feel special, just observed...
I can agree.
I agree. In childhood i was quite plain looking and nerdy and was usually ignored by most people my age. Now as an adult with better grooming skills i suppose, the compliments on my looks makes me feel happy for a second but also immedietly also makes me uncomfortable af.
I think Jessie lost her soul at the fashion show. I think she completely lost herself and her innocence when she met the triangle there.
Thank you for having a real opinion about what the triangle means. I agree that saying it’s the Illuminati is a shallow attempt of a explanation. I even heard it was “the all seeing eye of satan”.....which isn’t even a thing. I always appreciate when someone gives a deeper theory for a film.
I think it’s symbolizing that someone who is happy with their looks and has substantial morals; will still get ate up in Hollywood.
Beauty makes you look. Goodness makes you stay.
Just watched this and omgeee, Sarah's eyes at the end were scary, she was possesed.
its long been thought that blood of yound beautiful woman would transfer thing of the bloody queen history depicts this ritual alot
Maybe im too high but i think the triangles represent vaginas. I mean look at that 16:10 compared to that 34:20 both are basically the same with the runway looking like theres liquid on the floor (Ruby´s blood) The three triangles arranged to form a fourth one represent the three girls and Jesse and might be as well be a metaphor for their sexual orientation too (Three triangles pointing down for Sarah, Gigi and Ruby as lesbians and one pointing upwards for Jesse, the virgin.) That right there 21:56 is the neon demon itself in the shape of Jesse. The three girls or at least Ruby may also be able to shapeshift into cats with some kind of crazy ability, like the witches in many folk stories around the world, thats why they have taxidermy cats around. 35:50 Now its Gigil´s turn to go into the neon demon 36:25 Blue turning red too.
hey i really loved this classic review. I wanted to ask you: how do you know for sure that it was Keanu Reeves who was the one that was trying to open the door at the hotel room? The film never clearly states this. Also what was the significance of the dream with him and the knife in her mouth?
This was not my favorite of his but it was incredible and he seems to only be getting better. "Cophengagen Cowboys". His newest might be his best. A lot can be learned from Regn interviews. Like Hansel and Gretel these are parobles or fariytales but was one take hos message.
23:11 "his artistry and creation is *in his blood*" heh, I get it.
watching this just made me remember how much i loved this movie, need to rewatch now haha
she was never innocent - the fact you thought she was says a lot about the entire point of the character
Elaborate pls :3
@@pj5278 I think what they mean is that her true beauty is her looking innocent, fresh. And she absolutely knows it and exploits it. She isn't as naive as she seems. She is dangerous (as stated) cause she acts the way she looks, even though she is not who she looks like.
Great video man! And for your first analysis I’d say you did a great job!
Fantastic analyses on one of my favourite movies. You really went deep. Real Lolita shit.
You just won yourself a sub. Seriously, this was one of best videos I've ever watched on TH-cam in terms of content.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it man! Your comment motivates to me to keep making videos about film! I just uploaded a video on an obscure found footage film about Bigfoot called Willow Creek. Feel free to check it out! and Again, thank you for your comment! I love the Neon Demon and its my personal favorite from Refn. I really want to his upcoming film and T.V. series.
Asking for the logic of the cougar means you have to question the logic of the entire movie. The whole thing is symbolism over sense. There's a shit-ton of things that don't make any logical sense. Characters don't talk the way people actually talk. The cannibalism. The surreal cinematography.
I can't even tell what's supposed to be real and what isn't, or if any of it is. That's why I prefer subtle symbolism, not just throwing reality out the window.
Brilliant analysis.
Do more like this.
Patrick Martin thanks man! I got one coming up for Mandy soon. It’s not exactly the same in terms of structure but my approach to analyzing is the same.
You... you wouldn't dare do an analysis of Mandy now, do you?
(Seen it, perfect movie.)
Patrick Martin yes I would dare lol it should be up sometime this weekend! Thanks for enjoying my content! I have other Analysis videos on my channel if you wanna check those out! :)
Already did that and I'm starving for good content. If it'll really be as deep as I imagine you can go, I'll definetely become a solid, permanent watcher, with the notifications, like and all the stuff. Content like this is the sole reason why I'm on youtube, and I'm quite happy I found you.
Keep up the good work, man.
I think every time the triangle is shown it's never really technically in a triangle but forms a diamond and Jesse is the diamond in the rough
i appreciated this movie and respect your FULL analysis. you did very well. I am subscribing and turning on notifications.
That means a lot man. Thank you so much.
I believe they are witches. I believe that Ruby is the most powerful and the scene under the moon expelling blood to me shows she has some sort of powers. My theory is she maybe very old and does these rituals to stay young. I also believe she was able to either change into the lion in Jesse's room or possess the animal to stalk Jesse. I think there was also a full moon both nights.
I loved your analysis
Wow. you know that really means a lot! thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm thinking about doing a Moonlight analysis
Yeah absolutely, you should look into doing more of Nicolas Winding films as well.
I could.. A lot of people have already done Drive and Only God Forgives but maybe I can take a crack at Only god Forgives anyway... Or I can do one for Bronson or Valhalla Rising
I knew the movie was artistic but at the point where I was watching it ( and my age of like 14 I’m now 16 ) I’ve only really now seen how artistic is really is and the ominous undertones of it , u portrayed that fantastically to the point where I had to stop the video and think about it 😂
I admire your optimism towards this movie. I used to be like that when I was very young. I saw "beauty" in every movie. Now, married with 2 kids and life down the toilet. I got very selective. It's a very stylish movie visually... it takes skills for that. But it is very empty in adding a new perspective to the theme. I did not learn anything new about the modeling industry. The movie heavily takes advantage of non-verbal symbols to make it "exotic". Placing all the "deep meaning" into the viewer. Non-verbal things like that ables you to creating an entire world of meaning out of it. I would rather grade A "Mullholland Drive", which takes a stand and singularize a story of an aspiring young actress. Still full of non-verbal, but you don't guess about it.
I'm selective with my films to. Idk if you are used to Nicolas Windng Refns style and the way that he creates his films, but there is a lot of substantive things that are beneath the surface in this film. Non-verbal meanings are essential to interpreting art. you say that this film didnt tell you anything new about the modeling industry and thats precisely the point. because what else is there to know about the modeling industry? I mean theres already a plethera of films that explore everything about the modeling industry through verbal expressions and sentiments... So this movie gives us something new and refreshing to watch and analyze... this film is more about the essence and obsession of beauty than the modeling industry... the modeling industry is used a more of tool and a medium to explore these concepts of beauty. I'm sorry you didnt enjoy the film. For the record, Mullholland Drive is a masterclass at art filmmaking.
Really good analysis but holy shit dude, fix the audio levels on this video, I had to put on headphones to watch the video and actually hear it
????? I know I Fucked up the audio bad on this. It was my first upload and was very novice at editing. I wish there was a way for me to fix this issue without having to reupload
Ah I see. I would suggest keeping this video up but uploading a version with fixed audio which you could link to from this video.
????? I could. Maybe I will sometime soon
By the way, I just finished the full analysis, really good work for your first video, good job!
????? I really appreciate that man. Thank you. I've got tons of other review and analysis videos that have much better quality than this lol
Easily a new subscriber. I haven't even gotten a chance to see the movie but you gave me every reason to buy it. You are phenomenal, thank you!
Chase Ryan I never saw this comment until now. Thank you so much!
at the end when she reaches for the scissors, notice how the tape measure has 33 sticking up. 33 is definitely a masonic number. and divine number too.
This might seem nitpicky, but 'simplistic' means 'overly simplified' and isn't a synonym for simple.
Never saw this movie didnt care about fashion industry but being this deep now I want to thanks for the excellent review!
I was tripping the first time I saw this movie and had no idea what I was in for. I love this flick.
How can Jesse have a grave if they ate her body ? 🤔
I"m guessing they didn;t eat her bones ??
that's not Jessy grave its Ruby's.
her bone were buried
@@andreias5564 How is it Ruby's grave??
There was probably some leftovers so to speak. I don't think they could eat her bones and would leave her intestines uneaten.
This was a great analysis, although I think the main points could be summarised in a slightly shorter video. However, the more detailed comments on the scenes were also interesting so, great job overall! I wanted to add that the themes could also generalize to roles women are expected to adopt in a society, not only in modelling. Perhaps the director wanted to show that women can often be thought of as objects which are supposed to look pretty or just be used for sex, and this is very well represented and even explicitly mentioned in the bathroom scene in the party.
The thing that always bothered me about this film is Elle Fanning is just NOT that beautiful. She's just younger than the other girls, and younger does not mean more beautiful, I've known a few models in Hollywood and they can be jaw droppingly stunning, Jesse looks like a vollyball player on a high school team, cute, but not as perfect, not NEARLY as admirable as this film makes her out to be.
Thanks, im writing my application for art-school and I needed some freshening up on why I liked this movie. Very helpful.
I actually think that the photographer is the Devil.
I know "illuminati confirmed" has become a ridiculous meme in popular culture, but nether the less the origin of that pyramid symbol still has a lot to do with this movie, so in a way they are right. The pyramid represents a power structure that Jesse is climbing (Sara even says in a scene "how high can she climb..") and the all-seeng eye is also referenced both in the moon dialogue in the beginning and eye eating scene
I actually think you are right. I think it’s accurate to say the film was symbolising what the illuminati represents. I just hate bringing up the illuminati because people automatically believe in the more outlandish stuff attached to it
Yea I know what you mean, and I honestly think the attachment of the most outlandish conspiracy theories is a tactic purposely designed to discredit the theories that are likely true or plausible. And I still think its important to not be dismissive of everything and instead try to filter out what might be actually true among all the nonsense.
I wish that i could unsee that corpse scene... That really fucked my head up, I had weird trippy nightmares...
The live mountain lion (cougar) may have been placed by the models. The taxidermied big cat is a leopard or cheetah. There also is a stuffed wolf seen in the house. Both are predators that are territorial and competitive. And consume the weak.
I enjoyed your analysis. The only thing i have to add really is about the mountain lion. The others girls didnt put it in her room. Jesse left her balcony door open. Mountain lions have been a problem in Pasadena before.
While the cougar could totally be an actual omen or something of the like. I totally thought that the cougar was just Sarah or one of the other antagonists after shapeshifting. Or possibly one of their familiars (as witches tend to have). To be a warning to Jessie to leave the city before she gets hunted down by them. Or perhaps they were already there looking to kill her once she arrived home
What about tge closing scene where you see Jesse walks in a desert wearing a leather jacket that looks like Sarah's?
I was disappointed with the cougar part because the commercial made it out to look longer and more important than it was in the movie. I was also disappointed that Jessie didn't become dangerous until the end.
Haha, this morning I found your Refn Bare Bears video on Flicks, then right now I found this one by the same guy!
Haha thank you! I'm the guy posting these discussion videos on Reddit btw lol I'm trying to see if people dig my content
Great analysis ,thanks!
Watching The Flash effect when they go into the show was really cool it's cinematography taking to a new point watching this in a dark room really brings out the ambiance
Oh man our first video posted make sure to check out our other post we do games and shit!
'triangles have nothing to do with illuminati'
*proceeds to outline depictions of kabbalistic / illuminata / witch/pagan practice*
Fantastic analysis x
Wow this is a heavy movie. It makes me sick but this is the dark world we live in.
How do you explain the pool of blood coming out of Ruby? That was definitely supernatural .. she couldn't store that amount of blood in her naturally
Fair question. I assumed she just douched a lot of Elle fannings blood in there lol
@@TheMisfitPond yes well you're missing out on a whole supernatural aspect of the film..
adrian again, it’s a fun idea. I just don’t think there’s enough evidence for me to believe that there was a supernatural element
@@TheMisfitPond Dude, an INHUMAN amount of blood came out of her in the light of the full moon. What more evidence do you need? Explain that. You can't "douche" yourself with 10 gallons of blood 😂
It was a lot of blood but I wouldn’t say 10 gallons lol and yea it’s a full moon but you can plan rituals on full moons
To have one upwards pointed triangle, yuh must have three downward pointed triangles around it. Jessie was the upward pointed triangle while the other three females were the downward pointed triangles..
It’s all so predatory. The photographers the other models and makeup artists. And especially keanus character. The young women aren’t safe in this beauty market
Wow man, I thoroughly enjoyed your review man and I think it’s one of the best interpretations out there and I’ve seen many, I’d be really interesting in what you have to say about the movie “annihilation”
Thank you so much!! I actually have an ANALYSIS on Annihilation!! Please check it out and let me know your thoughts!!
one of the best movie I ever seen.
ABID HASAN agreed
Wish you was my befriend he doesn't watch anything like this
I forgot what the mirror mean but it's something having to do with another world or something evil not relating to modeling
not really, generally in movies (not just this movie) mirrors represent a character who is insecure or in conflict with him/herself, showing some kind of identity crisis within the characters
@@amitdror3983 Yes, it is demonstrative of multiple personality disorder or disassociative identity disorder (literally the same thing)
Abbey Lee looks really like a feminine young guy. Notice the shoulder difference male vs female at 11:42. Women’s shoulder are more rounded and soft, not broad. Abbey Lee has huge hands and feet and mens legs.
You're not the first to state this, wonder if it's true
How insecure do you have to be about yourself to make assumptions like these. There are plenty of women who have shoulders like Abbey Lee’s. It’s a genetic thing, not something that belongs strictly to men. In fact, Abbey Lee (Kershaw) happens to have broad shoulders as so many models do and she is an Australian Supermodel. Most models, especially from back when she was in the industry, also tend to be very tall and thin as she is. These are not male features of hers and to accuse them as such is to accuse every single other model who is a woman and has broad shoulders of being a man. It is ridiculous and only a showcase of your own insecurities as to see that she is more fortunate in her appearance than most. If you truly cared enough to be thorough, you could find baby pictures of her online and see that she was entirely a girl since birth. Being in and out of the hospital since youth doesn’t signify gender reassignment. Let me explain how that surgery works for you in simple terms to avoid going over the TH-cam comment text limit and not get it removed (lol). When you are transitioning from male to female, in most cases your gender reassignment surgery will invert or put your (you know what) inside out. It takes one session, not multiple. The process of all gender reassignment surgeries can only occur when the (you know what) is fully grown. In other words, post puberty. The gender reassignment surgery also cannot happen anywhere in the world LEGALLY until you are over 18. You could argue that it happened illegally if you really wanted to but then it wouldn’t have happened in the hospital and no one in their right mind would admit to it. To continue with your argument, if she was Transgender and taking puberty blockers and then going on Estrogen, neither of these need to happen at s hospital and in fact don’t. And beyond all of this, the reason she was in the hospital was clearly because of health issues that’s what her statement meant. It could’ve been physical or mental, and if that confuses you then you missed the point of the movie and only watched because their were pretty people in it. Regardless though, it doesn’t matter what genitalia someone has at any time and if you are watching someone and only thinking about what is in their pants then they are not the issue, you are.
@@jtarantula3390I promise it’s not they’re just insecure.
On point about the cougar. I just thought it was symbolism about the dangers of LA/big city pursuits.
Really good interpretations and presentations of them you did here. I think the Triangle might also be a reference to the "holy" trinity of christianity but in a different way, because after Jesse filled the triangle with herself she changed and right afterwards comes the "beauty is the only thing that matters" convo. So it might be that it stands for beauty i am, the beauty others see, and the beauty i want to be. Good that Refn's movies are pieces of art that don't have only one (intended or not) interpretation. I gotta rewatch only god forgives now :P
plus: in my opinion it does not matter at all if they are "real" witches or not.
you literally deconstructed the film. Totally liked it!
Thanks bro I appreciate it! :) I just came out with a full deconstruction of the film Moonlight if you'd be interested in that! Thanks for checking out my content!
Thank you, man, for bringing new perspectives on the details of what I think Winding Refn's best work! I'm jumping right off to your Moonlight review. Good luck on your channel!
Also, I see you have A Cure For Wellness review. Can I just point out the initial sequence of that film? Cinematographic exponent!
I really loved A Cure For Wellness. That film was such an experience! And no problem man! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I've got a cool We Bare Bears video where I talk about an episode that completely tributes Refns films like Drive and Only God Forgives. You'd probably really enjoy that
Amazing deconstruction of one of my favourite films from 2016! Nicolas Winding Refn is a genius
Thank man! I'm glad you liked this flm as much as did! It was my number one film of 2016 until I saw SILENCE. lol I'm glad you enjoyed my video dude! feel free to check out my other videos :)
The second one was NOT a cougar, it was a leopard or a jaguar
Do anyone saw the interview of the director talking about all the symbols?
The colors blue and red are present in the whole film and represent the narcissus tale in mythology the triangle represent male energy and the red light represent danger
I think that I will have to agree with you when you said what you said @16:22. Although the pyramid really has but one meaning, and that meaning aligns with a culture that existed eons ago, what you said about being egotistical and not caring about anyone in order to reach the top is pretty much apparent. As for your take on gigi (the one that was supposedly obsessed and taken with jesse) I didn't and never saw her reasons for in that light. To me she was a seasoned hair dresser (and like most in that industry) will recognize and try to get close to rising stars or those who are favored and liked.......as that's how they keep a job. Every single thing that she has said and done was based on being close to Jesse........not because she cared and was trying to protect her (from the very wolves that she ran with)👀👀👀, but because she wanted to possess and control her (just based on the conversation that she took control of in the beginning due to all the questions and needing to know about Jesse) only to turn around and have a conversation with her "girls" aboug her not having family (shit that only lame mfs do) as in so many words telling others something as that says more than what's being said. Truth be told that gigi make up artist was nothing but a predator, (wherher or not she/they were witches with an agenda) that believed she had successfully seduced her prey. She was the instigator and news carrier that got those girls all riled up to the point that they took initiative to hate her more due to gigi playing with their insecurity. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn! These are the type of folk that she should have stayed away from. Especially when the girl brough up the fact that her parents was dead to tit for tat jesse after she said whatever insulting comment. Jesse was better off just slepleping in her car vs dancing with them wolves. Cause there's no way in fucking hell that being rejected (in the sense that someone doesn't want to sleep with you) will have you go from caring for them to wanting to kill them.......and getting off on a dead corpse because what now?!?!?!?!? When folk show you theif crazy #bounce. I don't care where you leave and go to. There's only so much that ones spirit will take in situations as such. As matters as such happen in real life alll the time!!!!!
As for what you've said about her surgeon (just certain doctors and "professionals" in general) they will take advantage of those that are desperate and vulnerable for their help/insight As this is what empowers their egos and fills their pockets. As for Jesse "rising", I think that most missed the fact that the designer may have on some level instigate the disdain by saying all that he said. As he's older and understands the mindset of these girls. As anything that's not said or done can spark their jealous........as this is something that some folk like to do. As they will pit people against each other as a way to matter and become more involved (outside of whatever mindane involvement they have).........as what makes being beautiful a must need is all that comes with the territory.(being around that person/experiencing that person)....and if the designer can't find that beautiful face and body for his/her design, what happens when they do?!? Excitement, expression, creativity and all of the above! Which is why that girl refused to move over and allow them to sit. As she wanted to be "the one"....his number one, the one to end and steal the show. Unfortunately people behave in this manner everywhere, even in relationships.......and those that aren't fulfilled or happy/content with said person or individual will allow this kind of person to keep them imprisoned, unhappy and content. Which is why they killed her. Like *most young girls, I don't think she understood or maybe even could discern the direction that all that she was experiencing was going. As she lost her innocence or maybe squandered and dicarded it for what she thought spoke on behalf of what made her, her.
this movie in the clips itself its made to feel like we are watching something perverse without it actually being perverse but is actually demeaning, - well the underage rape scene.. yucky.. the industry, the objectification the moods, the female primal thoughts we dont say about one another, i feel in the 90's as i was objectified it strangely feels like this to me now and i feel dirty as i watch it but its so well done you cant simply take your eyes off it.
The symbolism of the mountain lion is important because (cats) its significant of the beginnings of humans. Thats why he used it.
