    “EYES WIDE SHUT as remade by Gaspar Noe” - YOU’RE the one, Kermode! YOU gave Noe the idea for CLIMAX...!

    Wow, Mark, you genuinely do have such an encyclopedic knowledge of directors and films that you can just reel off your tongue! It's fantastic. I really liked Neon Demon and I can definitely see the resemblance to a Dario Argento movie!

    Agreed 100%. Don't go to see this movie for good dialogue. Go for absolutely stunning visuals, fantastic dark techno and imagery that you will probably not forget for a while.

      I actually kind of liked the dialogue, the absolute dead pan delivery from all of the characters, especially in the bathroom scene from the beginning of the film, made me feel so uncomfortable. I’m someone who also has a soft spot for extreme cinema so I love a film that can make me feel uneasy by simply talking. Then the ending of course, but I won’t spoil anything

    I watched it on Friday 8th - its visually rich. Make no mistake its crafted beautifully. Kermode said a great point in this review about the vacuous world its portraying - you know what, hes totally right. It does it brilliantly too. On one hand the women are super sexy but evil. Evil with the need to be perfect. But devoid of human qualities - neon demons. Elle Fanning was great at her role. In fact superb, but they all were good. Its certainly not a conventional mainstream movie and not one to watch with the kids - be very sure of that. But its memorable for it makes you question and notice every detail while immersed between the acoustic landscape by Cliff Martinez. Refn is a spectacular film maker. But not for the audience of Independence Day.

    Despite the fact that the movie has a weird tone, Nicolas Winding Refn still manages to captivate his audience with his unique style, at least that's how I felt leaving the theatre, I thought about the movie later that day and the following one as well, and this happens with interesting movies that I like, just like Mark I would recommend watching this one.

    • @andreias5564

    I didn't really have a reaction after watching the film, but it has stuck with me for days after watching it. It's a visually stunning commentary on fashion and beauty, with an incredible soundtrack. That said, I can totally understand someone not liking it. You're either with it or you aren't, although I don't understand people saying the acting is wooden. I thought everyone did a good job.

    I think this movie, which is about beauty and perfection, is beautiful and perfect. I saw some terrible reviews of it. The films it reminded me of most where David Lynch's Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway. I also loved the soundtrack and went out and bought it after seeing the movie.

      I hate using the word pretentious re a film, the word is so often over used and applied to films that are artistically ambitious, which can alienate mainstream audiences - but I actually felt that is a word that fits nicely when applied to this faux bit of "art". Even if a film is about false, artificial values, one would hope it could be delivered with some semblance of truth. I don't even think it delivers as a piece of camp.

  • @WAAAAAAAAAAAY
    @WAAAAAAAAAAAY 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was disappointed with this. The trailer made it seem a lot more exciting......I was really bored for long stretches....then I remembered NWR's [of whom I'm a fan incidentally] last film was Only God Forgives [which I also found incredibly boring]
    "Terminator meets The Stepford Wives" would've been great but it's nowhere near that scary or cool. There were moments where I thought it was going to be outrageous or shocking but even in the times when it gets violent it somehow manages to make that un-involving and boring. I really wanted to be surprised, shocked, thrilled, all those things that Mark was but I just wasn't...... I think I wanted it to be Stepford Wives/Black Swan hybrid or something but it's not that full on[& Black Swan was a 15!]
    It does look fantastic though.......& Martinez's score is brilliant too.... I do love all his scores.
    :)

  • @92ninersboy
    @92ninersboy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really didn't find this film to be at all shocking - I thought it was rather shallow with pretty visuals that could have come right out of a perfume commercial. I didn't find it provocative or engaging on any level. I don't see Nicolas Winding Refn as much of an auteur (more a wanna be auteur). If one compares him with a Cronenberg or a Park chan Wook, for example, he pales to the point of disappearing.

    It's fun but not a patch on all of the genius films it emulates. It wears it's influences on it's sleeve and didn't match any of them for me personally. I'm always left feeling empty by this director. I find his films beautiful to look at but missing the mark for me substance-wise. I'd still recommend watching this at the cinema though, it's very enjoyable.

  • @cun7us
    @cun7us 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can tell Mark really likes this movie as he waxed lyrical on it and made at least twelve references to other film makers. Personally, I thought it had its good moments but was about 30 mins too long and a bit pretentious in a lot of scenes, and just focused on silence and imagery. The actual dialogue was ok but because of the deliberate slow pace, it detached itself too much from reality for me which is a shame. I guess that was the route Nicolas was trying to go, as you see the model puke up Jesse's eyeball after she becomes ill and the other one eats it.
    As with Nicolas' other movies that I've seen, namely Drive and Only God Forgives, it has me intrigued from the beginning, but after a while it becomes way too pretentious for me and I get annoyed like I've been hoodwinked. There were also dare I say it, too many white people, and gave the impression that it was mainly about their first world problems and narcissistic values, and did not really represent any other race, so I can see why it got booed at Cannes. Visually though it looked amazing so credit to the cinematographer.

    Is about webcam model Jesse. Jesse was/ is webcam model. If you pay attention to the movie, you will see it when she says “No is just some guy he found me online” looking at her face expression and the photos, and everything more. Is a weird feeling about this movie but the way Jesse is in the pool in the end saying she is dangerous just confirms It is about online webcam models just like Jesse. If Jesse wasn’t into online adult webcam services, she would not be able to afford paying rent in her motel (because the guy she found online is not portrayed as a simp. And Jesse had no money).
