They are so big and dangerous that they're one of the only animals safe from the crocodiles, the hippos overpower the crocs. Only hippos, elephants, and lions are strong enough to win a run-in with a croc.

No it wasn't just interest it was bullying. As seen it even turned into it attacking the baby.

Protip: do NOT mess with hippos. They're insanely territorial, super-strong and a LOT faster then their portly physiques make them look!
Usually a matter of respecting their territory. People photograph them all the time (likely with telephoto lenses) and don't get hurt.

It's so true, one thing to be aware of is that they sometimes wander quite far from their normal areas especially during dry seasons.

Well the baby hippos may look harmless and cute but the adults apparently despite being social creatures they are very territorial even with baby hippos in the pod it is said that sometimes hippos will gang up on a calf but due to their overwhelming strength they’re hard to study up close so people rely on theories there is at least 2 theories on why hippos would do such a thing 1 is most likely the bull would attack a baby hippo thinking it would 1 day challenge him for domination the other theory is most likely due to overpopulation because if there are too many hippos during the dry season aka drought the hippos are forced to huddle together in gooey and gross poo smelling mud until either the rain comes back or until the pond dries up completely and have to go find another pond to live in
Her previous calf is truly battle scarred. She's scratched up, all over. With all of those scratches, she must've been attacked by a pride of lions but managed to escape.
If you take a closer look, you'll notice her right ear is gone.

That second calf almost was a lion prides dinner but must have escaped, the whole body is covered in scratch marks and the right ear is completely gone. That's one tuff lil hippo.

If you google "Timeline of human evolution" the literal first hit is a Wikipedia article and an image illustrating that placental mammals are a very recent development. This includes hippos, whales, dolphins amongst others. The common ancestor between humans and whales is thought to be a rodent that lived about 140 million years ago.
This took me about 90 seconds to learn. Probably about as long as it took you to write out your patronising comment to the person above you.

Thinking about being the baby hippo, and trying to run and hide from my older sibling is terrifying-
Funny when i was a kid i thought these were harmless and calm and easy prey for any predator. As an adult , I figured it was the opposite! Impressive animals and the baby hippo is just adorable.

We had a hippo at our local zoo for the better part of 15 years at the time I saw her. I was only 7 at the time and her name was Gloria. The staff was handing out cake because it was Gloria's birthday and I actually got to stand right next to her. I almost thought she was going to break those skinny bars apart and charge right through everyone but she stayed chill the whole time. I wanted to pet her but understood that touching an animal that large at the size I was was just asking for trouble. Gloria passed away some time ago but when I ask about her some of the staffers ask in return how I was able to remember her all this time. I like animals, humans are ehhh.

Hippos are so dangerous for crews.
BBC does often give looks behind the scenes, so maybe you can find it somewhere. I wonder if they armored a truck to film out of... though they probably did a lot of filming out in the open to be mobile for good angles. I think hippos' behaviour is somewhat predictable and most of the time they won't be bothered by humans as long as they don't come too close to either the hippos or the water. definitely scary to be near them though, I'm pretty sure they can actually run much faster than humans on land.
Maybe they also use drones and cameras decorated as fake animals, such as a harmless tortoise, swan or even rock
Mothers will protect their child to the last.
