    Greetings from Hawa! I'm the big green steel boat you passed between the bridges. We weathered well where we were for Debby, but relocated for Helene which was much stronger on the water. Hope all is well on your northward journey, fair winds.

    Grew up near the York river and my Dad was a marine biologist for the state of Virginia, so love being on the water and sailing parents bought a 34 ft Bristol when Dad retired, they only got to sail south to Caribbean once before health issues limited their sailing range. My sister currently lives in Mt Pleasant NE of Charleston SC

    Even though you are somewhere around NY by now... Thinking how fortunate You are to have sailed north when you did. If You have stayed around Miami Tampa or Bahamas...different story. Everything happens for a reason just have faith that at the end it's probably for the best!👍⛵️

    So nice seeing you in my neck of the woods. Had I known you were coming, would’ve loved to have hosted you at Savannah Yacht Club and helped with your chores/getting around town. Best of luck dodging storms and getting to NYC.

    Given the recent weather events in the south, one thing has become very clear to me, we must understand the storm type we are dealing with as well as our geographical location.
    For this storm, your solutions worked very well.
    But imagine a storm system from further inland. If the river swells up, a 3 or 4 food bridge clearance might no longer be good enough. So as an escape plan, I want no bridges in my path. And that river could be bringing a lot of debris with it turning into misled and dragging hazards. Clearly that wasn’t the case for you, but it’s something to keep in mind. This is me taking notes for myself ;)
    The Charleston CBP wasn’t able to issue a cruising permit?

    I have no idea how I came across your channel but living in Charleston, this is fun. City Marina is four blocks from my house. Btw, Edisto is pronounced ED-is-tow.
    Interesting your video showed you traveling south on the Ashley River (under bridges) when you were headed north! lol. I’ll keep watching. Good stuff.

    I’d have put more wraps around your head sail or taken your sail down less windage and would have probably stopped you dragging. Single guy going back and forth from the Bahamas without a proper registered sailboat was probably why you was flagged. You got lucky with the agent . SV Atlas have had similar issues with CBP

  • @JojoWhite65
    @JojoWhite65 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As fellow 🇨🇦 cruisers, we’ve found some agents to be great (clearing us a few mins before closing though we offered to come back) and others not helpful at all (‘we’re short staffed so we can’t clear you here’ and sent us to another office at the airport - that couldn’t clear a boat.). As a result, we missed a weather window and had to wait 5 days for another. Customs and paperwork can be significant factor in cruising even when you do your research and planning.

      We saw that vid. It took us months to get our US boat registered for Canada - until we found an angel at Industry Canada who shepherded our paperwork through. Luckily we weren’t trying to clear customs during that time.

    Please promise to put several wraps of the jib sheet around the furler-over the decades, can’t count the number of times I’ve seen that cute little triangle work it’s way out to shred a jib in heavy winds. Also, my friend single handed his Vagabond 47 all over the place-skills! & agreed, bureaucracy is complete utter BS.

    They didn't give you a cruising permit because they watched you go back and forth to Bimini over and over. They think you're a smuggler just couldn't prove it.

    • @sailingEV888
      @sailingEV888  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Dragging is very scary 😮I was on my boat when frothy mile hour winds strong broke me free and I was floating with the wind I couldn’t do anything until the storm was over and it was very scary moment I owned a vbottom was my idea just in case something happened and it very important to not allow yourself to become complacent and trust your anchor don’t ever think that you’re a hundred percent safe because there is nothing guarantee all we can do is keep our eyes and ears open just in case

    I live in Georgetown just north. We had some mighty good gusts for a few of those feeders.... Just curious, how much chain, how much does your anchor weigh? I thought I saw you say you were dragging but didn't seem too much.. Just a muddy bottom? If Ya make it to Georgetown I'll come find you, just anchor in the harbor. I know the area pretty good all the way to Beaufort...

    Tampa? If Milton's eye makes landfall 20 miles South of the bay, all marine interests are still screwed... Surge can push predicted 9 feet of water all the way into the back bays depending on the tide. The. Best one can do is find a hurricane hole with protection from flotsam and drifting boats ahead and relatively soft mangrove behind in case you drag ... If you are in the ne then nw corner, Tampa's back bays may be good.... Watch out for swollen Creek/river discharges

    The “police” wouldn’t have said a word to you. I don’t know who told you what. You can anchor wherever you want up the river as long as you’re not blocking a channel. This isn’t Florida. We have derelict boats all over the place here and they stay anchored. Down by the marinas, it’s another story.
