  • Manayunk (/ˈmænijʌŋk/) is a neighborhood in the section of Lower Northwest Philadelphia in the state of Pennsylvania. Located adjacent to the neighborhoods of Roxborough and Wissahickon and also on the banks of the Schuylkill River, Manayunk contains the first canal begun in the United States (although not the first completed, due to budget problems).[2] The area's name is derived from the language of the Lenape Indians (later called the Delaware Indians by Europeans). In 1686-dated papers between William Penn and the Lenape, the Lenape referred to the Schuylkill River as "Manaiung", their word for "river", which literally translates as "place to drink"; the word was later altered and adopted as the town's name.[3][4]
Although historically a working class community,[5] in recent years the neighborhood has been substantially gentrified.[6] While there is still a working class population within the neighborhood, the population has shifted to younger, upper middle class professionals and families. Additionally, the nightlife in Manayunk draws visitors from all over the Delaware Valley, as well as international visitors.

My Great Grandmother was one of the founding members of New Umbria Baptist Church on Main Street. I lived in Manayunk when I was a kid

Ok Toon, at 15.30 B 4 you made a right onto Cresson St. we see a motorcyclist passing a street. That's Baker and I lived on Baker 1961/1972. If you went up to Baker then left on Baker up Baker to the second block you would have walked by my home at the Corner of Baker and Krams Ave. You were on Green Lane and Main. If you had walked across the Green Lane Bridge I worked for 12 years there for Martins Towing and Body Shop. Lots of memories where you did walk anyway so this trip was really KOOL!! for me but not so KOOL a walk that day for you. Thank you so much!!

    Nostalgia.
I literally used to reside on Boone St.
    Rough neighborhood back then. 37:33
I legit walked those steps to the bus stop as a child. I remember “vials” and now that I’m grown, yeah those were crack vials.
    Definitely come a Long way…
Thank you brother for posting this video.

This is a really nice tour of the city of Manayunk Toon. Toon your going uphill and the neighborhood is old but nice. St. John's the Baptist Church is beautiful and extremely large. I am glad you found the steps too Tune. I think this is one of your best tours yet if I say so myself. I love the brick one these buildings and houses.

Toon this was a awesome tour. This looks like it’s a separate town. It was beautiful especially on Main St. I do agree that you should have waited till it was cooler to do this tour. With the heat and hills you could have gotten sick. The heat and sun is no joke.

The lack of trees in Manayunk is very frustrating and makes it particularly difficult to enjoy on a super hot day. I'll never understand why they haven't planted any more trees.

I was just in Manayunk not long ago! Your videos are so addicting to watch! Also the hills there are crazy, I never like driving there cause of how tight the streets are!!
Also I like the turquois green door!

You should have kept walking straight to Shurs Lame and turned right you would have seen the Roxborough Avenue Bridge over Shurs Lane, it is quite unique! You stopped recording at Boone and Kingsley my family lives on Kingsley but I'm 200 miles away.
