Philly really surprised me as well when I first visited a few years ago on a work trip. I loved all the old architecture and the history.....but most surprising were the people. Everyone I met was friendly; people were saying "excuse me" and holding doors open for me; it was ALMOST kinda southern hospitality with a yankee twist haha. It was a nice surprise.
I try to tell people that all the time. I've lived all up and down the east coast and in CA. Lived overseas. Traveled all over western europe. Lived in Philly for 10 years. Friendliest, most down to earth big city you'll ever see.
Always walk those streets almost every day. Thanks for showing it in a positive light. Philly is the most under estimated city & It's the people that make it unique! Beautifully shot.

@@MikeCaz I'm glad you're happy in Jersey, but the city has not been in a slow decline since Rendell. The population has been increasing as have property values in not only CC, but the surrounding areas. Until Covid the city was thriving. I live in the Rittenhouse Square area and it's not dangerous. Nor are many parts of the city. Sure it has bad areas, every major city does. but you really mischaracterize it. Thank you Peter for having such a wonderful attitude and exploring our city. Our son just moved back to the city to live and my husband and I have been taking the free Septa train rides for senior citizens to visit him. He now lives in the Fairmount section and visiting there is so charming and peaceful. I am a history and art lover and I too enjoy the wonderful architecture of our local city.
One of other many things that i love about Peter's video is how he describe the energy or the vibes that he feel on particular place, not just describing the visual object. ❤❤
Philly is actually a great city, don’t believe the guy who said “bad things happen in Philly”. It’s not a perfect city but when it comes to parks, museums, concerts, shopping, restaurants, culture and diversity Philly has it all. There’s more neighborhoods and suburbs of Philly that are even better.
Believe the guy that said bad things happen, and don't go to any neighborhood except maybe Clark park or university city. Get the citizens app to see just how much crime goes on everywhere, all the time. The crime rate is sky high! Its terrible out here. Place is a dump
Aw man I miss Jim's! Philly is generally hated outside of the area but you gotta be the right kinda person to have grit and appreciate beauty to love the City of Brotherly Love.
Gotta be honest, maybe I appreciate grit as an adopted new yorker, but wow, I love Philly. It is full of beautiful areas. Northern Liberties and Fishtown are unbelievable.
Sadly you're right. I told my homie the other day that "I'd like to go to Philly. It's a hidden gem." He was like "philly?! You tryn go to Kensington?😆" I explained to him that it's a classical American city that's only rivaled by NYC and Chicago in terms of being a true metropolis...and I can go to Philly 5 times for the price of one NYC trip. But being an east coast city, it was settled and expanded before the rise of the automobile, so the cities are more compact and walkable on east coast compared to the rest of the nation. East Coast cities always interested me. It's such a different way of life than the rest of America.
😂😂😂 and filth and crime and crumbling buildings and efed up streets so you constantly have to be on the lookout for potholes or ditches and zero parking unless you pay crazy high parking lot rates...yep lots of fun here
And so much left to see! U Penn's campus, the 9th street Italian market + old city, Ben Franklin Bridge. I'm pretty sure you don't do those but would love to see a re-visit to my home city some day.
Great video Peter I only wish you had time to visit the Reading Terminal Market, it is a must-see. So hope you go back and check it out. Cool hood to visit is also Northern Liberties. That was not the French quarter, that was Rittenhouse... there is no “French Quarter” in philly. And Philadelphia is the mother map to the entire country, every city is modeled after philly’s layout and it’s considered “the walkers paradise” you missed a lot of tourist stuff. There’s a lot of history here
The French Quarter is an official city-designated district of Philadelphia spanning the area between 17th and 19th Streets east and west and Walnut and Sansom Streets from north to south. The designation was made official in 1999. Wikipedia
I agree there is no “French Quarter” in Philly - I was born and raised here (my age is 65+) the people who decided to designate that area as “French Quarter” probably aren’t from Philly because everyone from Philly knows it as the area and neighborhood called “Rittenhouse” or “Rittenhouse Square” 😂

This uber driver was clearly not from Philly, not to mention I don’t know who even says ghetto anymore.. people live in the city for diversity. Anyway, you were on south street (which spans from center city, to Bella vista, to queen village).. south street can be a hotspot for young people and drinking so yeah it can get a bit sketchy at night. Thanks for coming to our city!!! Hopefully next time you can explore some of the neighborhoods and Fairmount park more!! Also, William Penn was from England, so when he planned out the city he definitely used his European influences. Case in point, Broad street was intentialy built wide like that just in case if a fire broke out, it wouldn't skip to other parts of the city too fast, this was something a lot of European cities would do.
Penn insisted on the grid pattern partly because he had witnessed the devastation of the Great Fire of London in 1666, and partly because he thought streets with long sight lines would prevent immoral behavior. He thought the narrow, winding alleys of London encouraged both fire and vice. In planning his new city, he actually was trying to move away from most urban environments found in Europe or colonial America at the time. He was picturing a “green country town” in opposition to what he saw as the sordid medieval tinderboxes of Europe.
I live in Reading U.K. and I have family that I visited in Phillie, I found the is a Reading in Pennsylvania, a felt like a lot of Pennsylvania is the closest an USA state is to the U.K.
I love how your showing my city in a positive way. Some say there’s a lot of poverty and violence, and to an extent it’s true. But if you truly feel unsafe as a tourist just contact a local friend. Trust me when you know how to carry yourself you will be fine. Just enjoy the city food culture music.
Know how to carry yourself and you will be fine? WTF? So, in other words, Philadelphia is like a violent prison. Hey, newsflash, anywhere you have to be careful how you "carry yourself" is not safe to be. I don't want to have to "carry myself" anywhere I go. F Philadelphia. The city sucks.
The best thing about Philly is that it has a very European vibe - it’s more slow pace than NY but very artsy and people love hanging out in parks and sidewalk cafes. There are some REALLY rough neighborhoods and the murder rate has gone way up since COVID - but tourists and many locals have no reason to venture into those areas. I had heard horror stories before I went to Philly and then when I went my mind was shocked how cool it is
From the real European vibe , just cross the border north. Montreal the only french speaking great city on North America and Quebec city the only walled city North of Mexico ( Unesco world heritage)
The "rough areas" are the areas that need the most help and change! Kensington has been shown by alot of social media lately and its TERRIFYING and needs help DESPERATELY! Cops do not go in unless a death is reported. Now that's just absolutely HORRIBLE! How does that happen to a neighborhood? Its is the true WALKING DEAD! their skin is falling off and they're dying!

I live in Philly and really love the City. There is so much to do and see, and we are only 1 hour from the shore and the mountains, 1.5 hours from NYC, and 2 hours from Wash. DC. if you feel the need to get away. Philly has great restaurants, many of which are ethnic. The art and history museums are fantastic. It is also a City of great Architecture which ranges from 18th century through modern. Another thing I love about Philly, is that William Penn referred to it as "a green country town", and as a result, the City was designed from the beginning with parks large and small incorporated into its' urban design. It is a very pleasant walking and biking City and a very good place to visit and live.
Fun fact: Philadelphia is home to nearly 4,000 outdoor art murals! 🤍💛🧡❤️💜💙🤎🖤 At one point I know that Philly had the largest collection of outdoor murals than any other city in the world. So for anyone coming to visit, be sure to take in an eyeful of the many beautiful, multicultural and inspiring works of art adorning brick and stone façades throughout Center City and its surrounding neighborhoods. After a few yrs of living in Center City I moved away to Fl. Greatest regret ever. Walking Philly is what living in a city is all about. Amazing lifestyle every minute. The Masonic Temple is overwhelming. It was the first building that took my breath away when I first moved there.
Same. I bought a hot dog in FL the cart women never uttered a word. I went to Home Depot in So Philly where they built on a big-ass take out diner and the guy talked my ear off at 6:30 AM and said I was crazy to move away. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHILLY AND FLORIDA.
I've heard Philly being referred to as the sixth borough. I'm like no, just no. Philly existed as an American city first when NY was just a Dutch colony.
Philly born and raised! I lived in other states and I learned that life is life and life happens wherever humans exists. Philly has a lot of great and positive things that don't get promoted. I recently had a Marine brotha here visition from San Diego CA. He was in awe of the architectural design and craftsmanship of many homes and buildings. I even took him through some hood areas and he saw value in many of those older row homes. It was even refreshing for me to see my hometown from an outsiders perspective.
@@christopherwalton5445 yes for sure there is hardship headaches and more difficult neighbourhoods than that was shown...that applies to every place on our planet...but even so, the vibe of the people and structural layout is pleasing somehow...maybe it's because of the historical background or something I can't quite put my finger on.
I've been in Philly in '99 and loved it! We stayed in the University area, near Drexel, and every day we walked to the city seeing the great view. We went to the movies, a Phillies game and walked around the city. Great city, very cool!
I am so glad to see a positive review of Philly. I'm not from there but I have been many times and I'm so impressed with it. After living in Lower East Side, Manhattan then Florida for years, I intend on retiring in Philly. I've lived without a car in the past and it's a completely different world. I believe Philly is one of the most unique places in the world, very under-appreciated and under-rated. Both in it's beauty and lifestyle. It's long offered the true "URBAN" lifestyle that so many cities are striving for. Content to live in NYs shadow, in some ways, but still has it's own orbit. Quietly living their Philadelphia Lives. and it seems there's abuilding boom in Center City.
A lot of people do not know this but Philadelphia is made up of 158 neighborhoods and they all have their own personality. How long are you in the area? Or let me know if you come back. Happy to show you around.
@@um1446 segregation had absolutely nothing to do with how the 158 neighborhoods were originated. Since then however it is true different cultural groups have congregated together in areas. For instance the South East Philadelphia is still primarily Italian, Chinatown in the center of town, etc. Areas have even changed over time. North East Philly used to be primarily Irish immigrants but over the years has changed to have more of a Russian influence. Mount Airy and Germantown areas used to be mostly Jewish and has more of an African culture today. I think it is only natural for cultural group to congregate together and can be seen in many areas, not only Philadelphia. A good example would be the Central Jersey area with a large population of people from India moving in.
You hit most of the beauty, but still missed some awesome parts such as Fairmount, spring garden, reading market, and also the row homes along the river!
I always find it interesting when people say they were 'surprised' by how Philly was. Like what were you expecting? It's a city rich of culture and passion. It's awesome!
We have a bad reputation. Always have. Even when we were THE de facto American city during the colonial era, the South thought of us as weak little Quakers living in a dirty pit that wanted to be cosmopolitan while New England thought of us as Southern hicks that could barely speak English. Follow that into today where we're this sort of valley between the economic and political capitals of the country, and we still get overlooked for all our good aspects but all the press in the world when our sports fans do something shitty. But yo, we're happy being the best kept secret on the East Coast. We have a beautiful, diverse, affordable city with a completely unique character. We don't need a bunch of transplants fucking that up

It's easy to get around, plus if you are into early American history there is no better place. Thanks for showing the beauty of this most underrated yet awesome city!

Same here! Lived in NYC until age ten, moved to Philadelphia in my early twenties and wouldn't dream of going back to NYC except visiting relatives!
Pre-Covid, there would be a LOT more people out and about. The city was far more busier.
Lol like ALOT. It’s almost some NY type level without Covid
@Cybertoby Yeah this guy showed the absolute best, which in a sense is nice to see, but like all cities, Philly has its bad parts. I’ve lived here my whole life and every section outside of center city is an absolute shithole.
K&A probably one of the most impoverished dirty places on the planet, west, south, badlands, even the NE now, all shit.
@Cybertoby All well and good but this has literally nothing to do with any of the comments made before it in the thread.

@Augusta Mae Scout's honor haha...TRUST ME-I was shocked, too lol
I try to tell people that all the time. I've lived all up and down the east coast and in CA. Lived overseas. Traveled all over western europe. Lived in Philly for 10 years. Friendliest, most down to earth big city you'll ever see.
Yep, moved here 2 months ago. The people are so nice and friendly. It honestly surprised me.

One of other many things that i love about Peter's video is how he describe the energy or the vibes that he feel on particular place, not just describing the visual object. ❤❤
I am South Philly born and raised. It is an excellent city. Awesome food. Stupendous history. Great neighborhoods. Best of all are the people.

Philly, the birthplace of America!
Philly is hated by people who have never been to the city, and only know about the bad things happening in Philly, or they hate Philly sports fans.

"City of neighborhoods", code for segregated.

We have a bad reputation. Always have.
We don't need a bunch of transplants fucking that up
@@ErdTirdMans I love Philadelphia! It is easier to drive in Philadelphia than New York or Boston! Plus the people seam to be nice! The food and restaurants are nice! I have been to the bad part of Philadelphia and I never had a problem!
@@isabelnavaro6322 Nice people in Philadelphia? WTF are you talking about? The people are nasty and always in a hurry to go nowhere. Also, it is dangerous. The city is full of violent criminals. It isn't safe for white people. Now, if you are black, I guess it isn't too bad, but a white person had better stay out of the city.
Sports. Sports fans from other cities have (in most cases) unjustly given this city a bad rep based on 1-2 lazy and overstated narratives from 50 years ago. It's honestly funny at this point
God bless Philadelphia.
Born and raised. My family has been in the city for generations. I still love the city. We are unique and friendly here.
I just traced my own family back two nights ago to 1795, members of the St. Michaels and Zion Lutheran Church in Spring Garden. In another line my great great great grandfather was a baker in Old Kensington. I have a whole new hometown tour to do now, churches and cemeteries included.
I had not thought of Philly as a vacation destination spot. I do now! Thanks for bringing this beautiful city to my living room.
There is lots of stuff to do in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!
In addition to what he showed, check out Northern Liberties/Fishtown. The area around 2nd Street/Girard Ave/Frankford Ave has a lot of very cool bars/restaurants and has unique architecture. Under the El train on Front St. is also worth going but don't go north of Berks St.
Also, the Schuykill River Trail has stunningly beautiful views of the city and if you take the trail away from downtown (parallel to Kelly Drive) you'll get to Manayunk, another charming neighborhood.
Nice job covering the city I grew up 10 mins from (Delco) worked in and spend all the time I can in - and my favorite city. I am glad people were showing brotherly love to you as you journeyed thru the town. We have a neighborhood feel throughout our historic city. I hope you come back. Enjoyed your video. Sharing. My brother was a member of that Free Mason Lodge and donated much $$ when he was alive. South St has been a staple in my life. Christmas is magic in this town. Please come back when things are normal.
Gotta love Jim’s! Haven’t been there in years, but it’s a great spot. Philly always gets trash talked, but it’s such a beautiful city, with a long history and beautiful heritage. I’ve lived the majority of my life in south jersey, but I was born in NE Philly and my grandparents bought the house I was born at when my parents moved us to New Jersey. All my family still lives in Philadelphia except my immediate. Proud to be from there and it’s great to see you enjoying everything it has to offer.
