A special tune this. Niels and Kenny's rendition of an old danish song - 'In the deep calm and quiet forest'. My dad played the double bass, and my self the fretless electric. We shared that and played together many times. He was all jazz and I was more funky. Great times. We even went to one of NHØP/Drew's small intimate concerts together, and were of course in awe of those relative small fingers moving so fast and precise on the fretboard. When dad died in 2001, suddenly and much to young at 61, I asked if the organist could play his/her own interpretation of NHØP's rendition. The priest could'nt make any promises but would ask. As the sermon came to an end, and we carried dad out of the church, the organ started playing NHØP's version of 'I Skovens dybe stille ro' with quite a lot of Niels's small signature runs up and down underway. It was clear to me that the organist had done her/his best to accomodate my wish, and I was so grateful. It was fitting and beautiful. Love you dad.
It's remarkable how they avoid extravaganza and stick to simple takes on this song. NHØP's wonderful, singing tone makes this SO beautiful. I can hear the blackbird singing.... Per (DK)
The melody is from a traditional danish song. The title translates to "The deep quiet calmness of the forest". For that I think it is perfect to keep it simple. It certainly does have a very calming effect on me.
Musical GEM is right (even coming from a drummer - just jokin'...) Miss Niels! I found it by accident and now have to play it almost daily - even checked the lyric and it is really a GEM. Having soft spot for Danmark, since my German bass was an exchange with Danish bassplayer Hugo Rasmussen in Brno, Czechoslovakia.
Hooray I found this!. I transcribed it from a live recording of theirs I had years ago, lost the transcription and mistakenly had the wrong title. An Exquisite tune and the ultimate K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) example of how not to eff up a beautiful; song with lots of "jazz".
