- Hey everyone, today I’m going to show you how to regrease the shifter assembly in a honda S2000. Over time the grease lubricating your shifter assembly will dry out and lead to a notchy shifting feel. Luckily, you can fix this in under an hour for less than 15$. Let’s get to it.
Difficulty: Easy
Estimated time: 1 hour
Tools necessary:
- 10mm socket/ratchet w/extension
- 14mm wrench
- Flat Head screwdriver
- Super Hi Temp Urea Grease - amzn.to/2tzzd3T
- Rags/Paper Towel
- Needle nose pliers (optional) - amzn.to/2tDKlhi
Steps
1. The first thing you want to do is remove your shift knob. Use a 14mm wrench to remove the lock nut and then screw the shift knob loose…
2. Now you want to remove the center console. Carefully pry the edges of the center console away from the transmission tunnel and it should come right off. Once it is free disconnect the two wiring harnesses from underneath the center console. Pull up the e-brake and lift the center console away.
3. Carefully remove the plastic ring holding the rubber shift boot in place by prying each tab away with a flat head screwdriver. Each tab is indicated on the ring with a triangle. Finally pull the rubber shift boot out.
4. Now you can unbolt the shifter assembly. Use some needle nose pliers to pry away the rubber shield and then use a 10mm socket to remove the 3 bolts holding the shifter in place. With the bolts removed you can lift the shifter assembly out of place. You’ll also want to remove the spring it sits on as well. On my 140,000 mile CR you’ll notice most of the grease has dried up.
5. Use a rag or a paper towel to wipe up any old grease on the shifter assembly and the shifter linkage. Once it is all clean inspect the pivot ball on the shifter assembly for any cracks and replace it if necessary. Once everything s cleaned up, liberally coat the shifter assembly and shifter linkage with high temp urea grease.
If your center console and leather is as gross as mine you might want to take this opportunity to spruce it up with some leather cleaner and condition.
6. Now you have to reinstall everything. Replace the spring and lower the shifter assembly into the shifter linkage. The shifter assembly will only fit one way so if you’re having trouble fitting it, rotate it 180 degrees. Here is the tricky part… While holding the shifter assembly down against the spring you have to install the 3 bolts that hold the shifter in place using a 10mm socket. Thread one bolt to keep the shifter from popping out and then move onto the other two bolts. Torque them to 8.7 lb-ft. Once they are fastened replace the rubber shield.
7. Reinstall the rubber shift boot, pop the plastic ring back into place, and reinstall the foam insulation.
8. Reconnect the two wiring harnesses underneath the center console and pop the center console back into place.
9. Lastly, screw the shift knob tight and fasten the lock nut with a 14mm wrench.
DISCLAIMER* it's best to begin this process with the car in neutral, when applying grease into the transmission linkage try, if the linkage is moved such that any gear would be engaged, to reset the linkage to the neutral position or you'll have a hard time trying to reinstall the spring and shifter assembly as it only sits in one position

Great video but for anyone asking, most standard grease will work just fine. Its not a very high temperature area.

Urea grease isn't used here because its high temp. It has the correct NLGI viscosity, and it won't harm the plastic.
Other greases may work as a substitute, but make sure it meets the requirements. Anyone that works on their own S2000 should have Urea grease on hand. So using tbat you'll know it meets the requirements.

When I did this in my car I also replaced the two plastic pieces that attach to the bottom of the shifter as well as the spring. Only a few bucks more and it probably helped the shifter feel.
+Ryan Murray I have seen that mentioned in the forums and in other videos but I'm skeptical how much it really helps so I didn't include it. I can see the spring helping tho.

while having at all apart I would recommend replacing the $30 worth of parts this spring into plastic pieces. its well work the little $$ for a great feel. you can get the OE parts on eBay or Amazon
I am skeptical replacing the plastics makes a difference. It would have to be tested on its own instead of with the regrease. When I’ve taken out the shifter the plastics have all looked perfectly fine.
I can imagine the spring making a difference though.

You mentioned a few times you dont see much benefit in changing the plastic parts for new ones. But the spring might you wrote. What does the spring do? How does it improve shifting? Just curious thnx.

I generally don’t feel much of a difference when I do this to be honest. Get the grease from Honda, Amazon is easiest
I did my yesterday and it help a little bit. The most exciting part was being able to clean the center counsel because it looks like someone spilled coffee along time ago.
hey I have a question and in need of help, I removed the three bolts but the shifter refuses to come out. I tried everything and I can’t get it out. Any suggestions?

any input on how long the grease lasts as far as time vs mileage? my AP1 is 15 years old now but only has 30k miles and has been garage kept.
Unfortunately no. I feel like mileage is a bigger factor just due to the heat the transmission produces.
Hey do you know where to buy an extra bushing and spring ? Just to replace the old ones fully.
You can also put the shifter into reverse and it will stay in that position while you put the three bolts in.

Ive seen videos where they not only regrease, but also replace all the "white plastic" and the spring with new parts. Is it worth it? I ordered it just incase, but might just regrease only as statedin video

+Steven Lu I have a set of them sitting in my garage. Before my next set of tires i. Will isn't all them since I'll need an alignment. I'm not sure if it will improve handling but it will ensure my alignment doesn't change which is helpful.

When you change the shifter plastic do you have to have it in neutral or in gear

do you also have to grease the hole where the bushing goes into or just upper hole where the bigger plastic piece make contact with?
I grease everything that makes contact with the plastic to be safe.

Do you have an Oil Cooler install video? That is my next mod for tracking the S2000 in the Texas heat safely as possible.
+Jeff Collop I don't. I have been contemplating it considering that the tracks here can get over 100F. However I am a pretty data driven person and I'd love to get some oil temp readings first so I can be sure that it is necessary.

But I'd like to keep my S as stock as possible, any way to get temp reading without a gauge? Via smartphone maybe? :P
+niikon I just a quick search and I don't see any wireless sensors. I'm guessing you might be able to plump it into an aftermarket ECU and the use a smartphone app from there possibly?

Interesting, this is the only guide that doesn’t have you replace the spring or all the plastics.
I don’t see the point in replacing parts that are not broken. I think most of the folks that blindly replace all the plastics are just feeling the benefits of the new grease. With the grease you can clearly see where it has dried up and is no longer doing its job.
How often should you re-grease?
Not sure I would do it by feel but I can’t imagine it more often that 50-100k Miles.
I did that but now 1st Gear is Reverse and 3rd Gear is 5th
