  • In the video we travel all over central Montana to visit several sapphire mining localities as well as seeing gold panning, meeting a few gemstone cutters and looking at many old books and old documents and we continue to uncover the history of American Gemcutting. This is part 35 of our year long adventure travelogue.

    Surprised you didn’t stop in Butte, it is the definitive mining town in Montana. Although not know for gemstones it certainly displays the scale of mining above and below ground.

    One of my wife's prized rings is a sky blue Montana sapphire, cast and cut by Jerry Wycoff. Just over a carat. I learned a little about lapidary chatting with him, from his books, & videos too. Thanks for sharing, Mr. Prim ! Your videos always make my day !

    I went to Lewistown, Montana in 1966 with my family to visit an aunt that lived there. We heard about Yogo sapphires but were not able to pursue mining at that time. Ten years later, I returned and went to Spokane Bar or maybe it was El Dorado Bar. It was right on Hauser Lake. I found a number of sapphires, the largest of which I still have yet to facet. It weighs about 6 carats. Looking forward to more of your Montana videos!

    Thought Yogo was closed to the public. I would like to get a pickup bed load of gravel that only the big rocks have been screened off. Is that a possibility. Who would I contact?

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure if they still sell gravel. Check their website.

    Warning to comment readers and Montana visitors from a lifetime resident. The YOGO mine is misrepresented EVERY time it’s in a video. It IS NOT open to the public. Tours have to be arranged ahead of time with the owner Don Baide of Bozeman. They also DO NOT sell gravel or dirt. Any seller claiming to have Yogo rough, is not being honest. There are other smaller claims around the Yogo dike mine. But again, none sell gravel. The “YOGO” gravel you get online, is just cleaned gravel seeded with the right shade of blue sapphires.

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I didn’t claim any of the things that you said in this comment. The Yogo mine is not open to the public. We contacted the owners directly through industry contacts that we have and set up an appointment for my research. We didn’t buy any dirt or gravel from them. We didn’t we didn’t get any Yogo rough.

    My family and I have been going to Montana for sapphires the last couple of summers. It's a real hoot, and there are some nice stones to be found! The Blue Jewel Mine near Helena was a great place with great people. We've also done Gem Mountain in Phillipsburg with great success. Potentate is a private commercial mine, but they seem to run a good business. My wife has a stunning unheated pink sapphire ring from there. It was a gift after beating breast cancer.

    i’ve been to that yogo mine! went a few years ago! The dude I learned gem cutting from has a place out in sapphire village and does cutting for the mine occasionally! Got to go out and look for them myself too when i was out there. A few weeks before I visited they had found i think like a 7 carat yogo, i got to see it and hold it in person!! Have a few little yogos I still haven’t been brave enough to cut.
    Ahhhh and the bar!!! i remember the bar!!!!
