  • SOCGEMS Presents: Sapphires From Montana - A Historical, Geological, and Gemological Overview with Dr. Aaron Palke, Senior Research Scientist, GIA (Gemological Institute of America).
    Montana’s Yogo Sapphires Unique Gemology
The first Yogo source was discovered in 1895 and by the turn of the century, production averaged 400,000 carats a year.
The mine site is located within a long dike (a geological formation of volcanic rock layered above older, pre-existing rock) that held other sapphire deposits.

I honestly think the unheated ones are prettier. I have some yogo Sapphire that I use to set on small rings and stud earrings and Its one of my favorites.my customers love it too

All yogos are heated. They’re mined from a limestone dyke via explosives. Also why there aren’t large stones. The owner, Don Baide, of Bozeman, doesn’t allow tours either. It would be cool though. Yogos are very nice.

You could start a business of wall prints of some of those magnified stones. Much nicer than those sold on Amazon!

Size doesn’t matter necessarily. Stones are valued by the four C’s. Cut, clarity, carat and color.

If most of the stones you encounter are treated. Chances are your supplier found a cheap secondary source in Thailand. Only one source in Montana requires almost all the stones to be treated. Rock Creek. The rest have a treatment rate of around 17%
