Funny because the Amazon Ocarinas are rated 9 out of 10 on reviews right now, even in 2024. Edit: Just ordered one with Gina code - still works in November 2024. Will be a while till the Ceramic Ocarina comes in the post since I'm from UK.
The Night by Noble is a great ocarina if you want to travel because it's plastic, and the almost $40 price tag might seem like a lot, but the price reflects the quality of the ocarina, so if you want a good ocarina, spend a little more money and buy from reputable brands.
We have a clarinet player in my band who buys a "throwaway" instrument from Amazon every year. He uses it when we have outside performances (usually parades). If it happens to rain it's not an expensive loss if the instrument gets wet, and at about $80 a pop, he just buys a "new" one every year. That's about as good as an Amazon instrument can do :)
I bought one on Amazon 3 years ago for $70. I was made in italy out of the same type of clay as they use in terra cotta plant pots and was fired in straw. Smelled like bacon when it came out of the box and had a nice blackish/red paint similar to that of some violins. Much more ergonomic then any other I have seen. It sounded awful though so I didn't play it for years. Tried learning the tin whistle about a month ago and decided to pick up the ocarina again and learn them together. Sound came out perfect. When I use a pitch measuring software, the scale was a perfect C scale when played softly, and a perfect C# scale when played loudly. I do not know if over blowing is supposed to cause a pitch shift but it seems to. I think the reason for the bad sound may have been inconsistent breath power. I now use software when I play to get used to how I need to blow to keep the ocarina in tune with the C scale.
Such a great video, now I know that I was doing the right things, just on a poorly made ocarina! Will be on the lookout for a better one now!! Thanks Gina! 💛
I'm a Sitar player (an Indian, stringed instrument. ) and purchased my first, electric Sitar from Amazon. I don't know if I got lucky, but I love it. It's in great condition, plays well and was clearly crafted with care. It was pretty expensive, about 500 dollars, so that could be why. My friend is wanting to become a flutist and he asked me to check you out. He's wanting me to play Sitar in one of his future songs when he becomes a better player. Great video! Subscribed.
I did buy my first ocarina from Amazon, luckily it was a Night by Noble. A great instrument. I didn't yet know of STL, but I have used STL for some tabs, and their teacarina looks like fun. I just learned my first song this week, the Pallet town theme from pokemon red, on my 12 hole alto c. I sound good at least half the time. 😂
I bought mine yesterday from amazon for 12 dollars. I figured I’d get a cheap one to see if I liked it and to learn on. If not well, my sister’s kids now have a new 12 hole whistle
I bought my ocarina off of Amazon, and originally I was SOO excited to play it. But now I’m anxious to see if it will even work. Thanks for making this video. It helped me make better choices in the future. Love your tutorials by the way! Keep up the great work!!
Gina, thank you so much for all your videos. I have been playing Native American flute for years. I want to try something different like the Ocarina This video was very helpful on starting my search for one of these. Keep up the great work! 😄👍
I’d like to say thank you for getting me into start playing the ocarina, I’ve purchased one from Amazon and tried to follow the tutorial that ya provided, it sounds off, so I returned it and bought the plastic one from STLOcarina and I loved it!
This really helped, was about to buy the the second ocarina that you showed off amazon. Thanks for saving me the trouble, gonna go for the STL ones now.
Thank you so much for making this amazing video! I thought I was going nuts, since all my high notes sounded the same. My $20 amazon Zelda replica looks pretty, but in terms of sound it's way off.
Watching this video as I wait for my 20$ Amazon Ocarina... Now I'm contemplating canceling the order. Absolutely love anyone on YT who's willing to purchase something to review for others. Subbed... Also what you said about the higher octive notes being the notes that won't play on the crappy ones... That was my experience with recorders in Middle School. Those black plastic ones they give you tend to suffer on the higher notes. Got a marble recorder and it sounds amazing all the way through the scale. Also Drume hand in Portland Oregon sells a ceramic ocarina for $50. I saw it when I was ordering a tongue drum from them. thought that price is kinda high. But I suspect it's a high quality one. At least it's made in the states by local entrepreneurs. I'm going to wait until my order gets here; if it's not in the right key, and doesn't play all the notes I'll send it back and I'll use your link to buy one from STL.
Glad to know this, and more so that I got my first ocarina from the site you work with! Thanks again for these amazin videos. I can't wait to get started!
Thank you so much for the comparisons! I started searching TH-cam for reviews for an ocarina I got for my birthday because I could tell it sounded off. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
Welp, too late for that now chief lol I bought one from amazon that was ceramic with pretty flowers and birds painted on it. Oh well, if it doesn't sound good, then it can be a nice display piece and a pretty lesson lol. After watching this video, I went straight to the STL website and bought a plastic one with your code. Thanks for the helpful info! ❤
Bought my first ocarina recently, off of Amazon. Luckily my girlfriend is an ocarinist and recommended the Night by Noble, so even off Amazon I got a good one.
I got an ocarina from amazon. I was incredibly lucky I went for one that seemed cool. It came and it sounds great. Black and gold, with the shape of a proenix. THEN I learned it was from STL and I could have gotten it cheaper on their site. But I have an ocarina, it looks great and sounds great, even if I did spend a couple more dollars than necessary. I love my beautiful ocarina.
bought my first ocarina and used your code. waiting for it to be delivered but i'm stoked i bought a 12 hole plastic good enough for me so i'm gonna be happy :)
thanks i bought mine off of STL it was worth it even for the expensive price the one at amazon usually have a squeak when you blow or a higher pitch this one has that perfect middle tune and always stays that way
I was going to buy mine off of Amazon, but after seeing this video i quickly went to stl and bought one from there it'll be here in a few weeks, I'm very excited
I wish I had seen this video before purchasing a Zelda from Amazon. Delivered 3 days ago and the high notes sound like wind. It’s beautiful and will likely be a display unit on a shelf in my recording studio. Two days ago I ordered the Zelda from STL. Still waiting for it;15 days until delivery by DHL.. That sucks. UPS, FedEx and USPS are faster and cheaper. I could bicycle to St. Louis in 15 days. Anxious to try out the SRL Zelda and get the high notes. Thanks Gina for your videos. They are great.
Omg thank you, just ordered one off Amazon and then came here and requested refund instantly and ordered the legit ceramic zelda ocarina from STL! Btw thanks for the code 😁😁! (Shipping is sooo expensive, $30 usd!?)
Great video, I want to learn to play so it was good to see what the notes are and what to look for in getting my first ocarina. Thank you for all this information.
I just bought a cermamic one off a norwegian online videogame retailer after I tried to 3D print one, which could not hit the higher pitches. I've worried it will be the same bad Amazon quality. If it sucks I might consider STL but I just worry about the toll costs I have to pay. I tend to get those with stuff ordered from the US
i bought a jean paul flute on amazon and it was epic, i ordered a trumpet used from amazon also jean paul and it seemed pretty good but it was a little too beat up. make sure you can return it before buy!! lol
My boss came into our workplace the other day with 4 ocarina boxes from somewhere in China. Apparently it arrived at their home and no one there ordered them. We couldn't figure out who bought them so he gave me one. It's one of the cheap ones, but I literally got it for free unexpectedly, so I thought that I might as well learn to use it. But since it's so low quality, I'm not sure if it is worth it.
Thanks, you saved me from wasting money. I actually bought one of the ceramic ocarinas a few days ago, but it arrived shattered, so I got a refund. I considered that a warning, so I decided to look for buying advice and found your video. So much lucky.
update #2 : Wow, STL ocarina has such a nicer shape and hold in your hands, feels way more comfy. Also the notes aren't off, theyre exactly in tune and make really nice sounding high notes, a little airy but no where near the amazon one. the one on amazon looks like a potato or something now that i see the difference and really doesnt look good. The paint job is much better, actually covering all the holes ( you can tell they skipped 2 holes that it was hung from while painting on the amazon one) I knew it was the ocarina and not me! it was so airy, if youre trying to do the high notes it just sounds like air and not sounding good, im getting a new one. update : just ordered the ceramic with your code, will update how it is.
Well looks like I got to buy another ocarina because I didn’t know this when I bought mine 😆 I got mine off of Amazon so I need to buy another from STL I guess
Yes, you can purchase instruments off of Amazon if you do some research or know exactly what you are buying. Amazon sells many well known very good brands of various instruments.
I'm no musician, and while I do love flutes and the instruments of the sorts, I sadly never got into them growing up. Tho out of a random burst of inspiration, I decided to buy one off of amazon, that came with a book to learn how to play songs along with a stand. I am no expert, BUT I DO have an ocarina I've used from time to time! It's one of those round ones, my parents got me from a cruise they went on some years back, and I've used it off an on. I can ensure you, the round one I got vs the LoZ one I bought on Amazon sounds leaps and bounds better! I'd first doubted it tho, granted the ocarina was a different shape, and I'm no musician... so perhaps I was just playing it wrong? Well, sure enough, this video exist using the EXACT one I bought having the SAME problems I'm having! So, you'd convinced me! I bought the ocarina you showed off (the Ceramic one) from STL, and am looking forward to it's arrival! In the mean time, this one will still give me good solid practice on just holding the instrument. I'll update this once I get the STL ones, said to be here in 7-8 days.
Thank you for these videos , I have a 6-holed Ocarina from STL that is plastic ,, constantly seeking out good Zelda and Mario tutorials that will make my 6-hole Ocarina shine ,,, 😊👍
You didn’t have to say you were a teacher for me to know you were a teacher, You talking feels peaceful, calm, and even when your judging the ocarinas it dosent sound mean or negative
Uh oh I bought the one that is with silver for $29 but it was from etsy and I have never owned a 12 note ocarina before. But I will say I did own a 6 note of the peruvian ceramic ocarina even though difficult to try to play. So I never knew their was different types of ocarina and qualities. But I'm glad I found this video now
I bought mine from a local game store for $20. Always thought I was just bad at it, good to know I'm only half bad, and the other half is the instrument itself, lol.
best advice to anyone looking to start actually playing the ocarina is get a 4/5/6 hole pendant. don't get a sweet potato, thank me after you learn posture, fingering and decide to upgrade. the quality control between playablility and asthetics will always err on the side of form over functionality unless youre willing to pay the exta money.
Thank you so much!!!! I'm a huge fan of the instrument. But not in the historical sense, it's just a nice flute to me from my favorite game, so really want mine to be from Zelda lol
You really hear the different. Thx for that. I get an old one from a friend and i really wanna learn it, but its a bad one like from amazon and I buyed now a new one from stlocarina's because they sound really better.
Well, I happen to have gotten an Ocarina for my birthday. After some light research, it appears to be an Amazon one. Song of Time played well when I tried it, but I'm gonna have to take a look at those higher notes when I get home. STL might be getting another sale today, thanks to you.
I personally ordered a $15 Ocarina of Time replica mostly because I wanted to own and display it as a replica, and purchased another Ocarina from STL for playing
after watching I realized My goodwill ocarina is WAYYYYY off tune. It came with a fingering chart but it still sounded somewhat off. I think the sucker is a sharp A rather than a C. Still fun to practice with.
I got the 2nd Ocarina. Seems you have to blow extremely delicately for the last 3 higher notes. Im curious if the extra '2' neck strap holder holes effect this Ocarina.
This was uhh... subtle. "Music shop instruments work better than ornaments!" isn't exactly a contender for hot take of the year. But I did giggle to see my tuner showing the D, E, and F of the cheapest one being almost on the money for D, E, and F while saying "nope, nope, and nope".
So I have a tech background so I know about dodgy USBs on Amazon for example so I did some research before I bought one and ultimately picked a reputable branded one so I know it's good even though I did buy it from Amazon. 100% of the time when a note fails its because of operator error because it nails the note when I adjust my fingers slightly 😁
Ugh the second one, I was just given that exact ocarina as a gift and I was so excited. Looked up how to play song of storms. And I got the finger work down but it just wasn't sounding right. And then I saw this videos thumb nail and I'm like, "oh God no" when I saw you holding my ocarina lmao. Looks like I gotta do some shopping. I'm not gonna learn on this trash.
I got one off amazon and I wondered why it didnt sound as calming as ocarinas usually do. And it didnt play F or high C very well. I'll make sure to get my money back.
Gina- I bought two quality ocarinas from STL. The one I use right now is a tenor in the Key of C. I am brand new to playing but play the guitar ukulele and drums so I have some music in me. What I have noticed with the ocarina is that the blowing technique can greatly affect the pitch. I have to work real hard to get the pitch of C when measuring it with an electronic piano tuner. Most times I get a D or D flat and it feels like my fingers are sealing the holes correctly . Can you elaborate on what is going on?
If you were going to review one of the Amazon ocarinas you should have done the Night by Noble. That one actually has reviews on it stating that it's the best sounding ocarina on Amazon and the reviews are done by people who actually play.
Hey! Thanks for letting me know about this one. The reason I went with the two that I did is because they are some of the ones I see beginners purchase most often since they are the cheapest and many want the Zelda Ocarina’s. Haven’t tried the Night by Noble but will have to at some point!
yeah mine just sounded like a fricking train whistle with minimal difference especially when play a zelda song and listen to it in my head. Imma ask for an stl one for christmas and just chuck my other zelda one it sounds terrible compared to actual cords only 20$ waste though, now ill get one for quality and power off stl lol
Since I've seen STL ocarinas on Amazon (along with others that usually get good reviews like Mountain or Night by Noble), saying not to buy an ocarina off of Amazon seems to be making a sweeping statement that is not well backed up if, by your own judgment, STL ocarinas are good.
I bought an inexpensive one from Aliexpress (around $18 with shipping), which I received yesterday, and maybe I hit lucky, but all the notes are in tune, the paint job is perfect and it makes a great sound. I appreciate these things are always hit and miss if you go in at a low budget.
So I bought 2 Ocarinas from Amazon this year, one for me and another for my autistic son, he hated the sound of mine and I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks for this I just ordered a new one from the site you recommended.
I watched this TH-cam and bought 5 Ocarinas from STL site. Two Ceramics are for me and my wife, and three plastics are for my Ocarina group. I am not a person who usually post a reply but at this time I decided to do, because I regret buying those at STL. First, nothing comes with a case. I bought one at Amazon and it comes with a nice Ocarina case, but at STL, they just sent out those Ocarina in a paper box. It is very uncomfortable to carry it in a paper box. Second, I bought 3 plastic Ocarinas. I disappointed that they are not cheap but they looks cheap... I means they look like a toy. They sounds good but sometimes it is not stable when I blew high pitch. Two other Ocarinas are Ceramics, and they are fine but price seems higher than Amazon, and of course they comes without a case. Third, So I thought again and again, and I decided to return. When I went to the site, I can only return within 10 days, I have to pay for the returning package, and there is also 30% of restocking fee.... "F...." So, I gave up the returning, and I will buy at Amazon when I want more... that they come with a case and when I do not like I can return until I find a decent one.... I finally recognize that this TH-cam is more likely commercial....
Thank you sir. I need honest opinions.i like my Amazon ocarina. They use the whole "oh you need better" advertising. If I find the perfect ocarina I'm gonna make a video. However, Amazon does have a slight problem with higher pitches but until another one comes along I'm satisfied.
Thanks for the tip! I bought my first ocarina from Etsy. It is in the 20 dollar range. I'm a total beginner, so I'm not sure how in-tune it is, but it doesn't sound as good as the ones you recommend here. I'd like to make sure any problem isn't due to the ocarina before I devote serious time to practicing, so I'm considering the STL Ocarina site. Is your code still active?
Hey!! I have just discovered your channel! Is it at least useful start with the one made from ceramic? The thing is that I am from Mexico and got the ceramic one (it was the only option) It is a 12 hole Ocarina very similar at the one from ceramic you showed... I don't know how to verify if the Ocarina sound calibrated or not... Any advice?? Thank you very much and thanks for your channel!! I just started to loved it!! David TM
Funny because the Amazon Ocarinas are rated 9 out of 10 on reviews right now, even in 2024.
Edit: Just ordered one with Gina code - still works in November 2024. Will be a while till the Ceramic Ocarina comes in the post since I'm from UK.
Isn’t wild that they are rated so high?! Hope you love your new ocarina once it gets there 😊
me who just got my ocarina from amazon today: 👀
Me lol
Facts, mine doesn't sound like any of these. 😭😭
Literally Me rn
@@Tyler-Kearney you seem to know your Ocarinas could you be able to give advice on buying a beginner one?
I did but i figure if i get better I'll reward myself with a higher quality one....
Night by Noble rocks 🖤🖤
The Night by Noble is a great ocarina if you want to travel because it's plastic, and the almost $40 price tag might seem like a lot, but the price reflects the quality of the ocarina, so if you want a good ocarina, spend a little more money and buy from reputable brands.

THANK YOU for doing this video. Very Helpful!
You really hear the different. Thx for that. I get an old one from a friend and i really wanna learn it, but its a bad one like from amazon and I buyed now a new one from stlocarina's because they sound really better.
Glad this video was helpful for you!
Well, I happen to have gotten an Ocarina for my birthday. After some light research, it appears to be an Amazon one. Song of Time played well when I tried it, but I'm gonna have to take a look at those higher notes when I get home. STL might be getting another sale today, thanks to you.
It was the first time I saw such a magical instrument, and I slowly understood what his voice was like
I personally ordered a $15 Ocarina of Time replica mostly because I wanted to own and display it as a replica, and purchased another Ocarina from STL for playing
after watching I realized My goodwill ocarina is WAYYYYY off tune. It came with a fingering chart but it still sounded somewhat off. I think the sucker is a sharp A rather than a C. Still fun to practice with.
I just got one on Amazon, but from STL’s shop on there! Haha
i have one like the 1st one you showed identical accually i did not buy it off of amozon and it sounded quite nice
I got the 2nd Ocarina.
Seems you have to blow extremely delicately for the last 3 higher notes.
Im curious if the extra '2' neck strap holder holes effect this Ocarina.
Thank you for the review! I want to buy an ocarina, and this is super helpful.
I literally just got mine. I was so excited 😢
I agree with you! STL Ocarina makes better ocarinas.
Hi, do you have any tips for people in UK who don't have access to STL? Thanks for all these excellent videos.
The first one you showed is the exact same one I have...And I won this thing off of a freakin claw machine app!😅 I should have freakin known!😭
I've wanted one since I was 8, just bought the plastic STL one with your code! Fingers crossed!
I got one off amazon and I wondered why it didnt sound as calming as ocarinas usually do. And it didnt play F or high C very well.
I'll make sure to get my money back.
I actually found a night by noble off of amazon, and its my only one at the moment, though i'm looking to get another that fit my large hands
Damn! I just purchased one before I stumbled onto your video! Lucky I didn't spend too much!
How is a flute a woodwind if it does not have the wood reed like a saxophone or clarinet?
yeah mine just sounded like a fricking train whistle with minimal difference especially when play a zelda song and listen to it in my head.
Link plssssss
So I bought 2 Ocarinas from Amazon this year, one for me and another for my autistic son, he hated the sound of mine and I thought I was doing something wrong. Thanks for this I just ordered a new one from the site you recommended.
I literally got my amazon ocarina yesterday but I'm quite impulsive so it's my starting point and I'll invest if I get somewhere with it
i bout the really cheap ceramic amazon model for like 45 bucks at a convention, its a just a paperweight now that i have an STL Ocorina
I'm super glad that I never thought to order my ocarina off of Amazon and bought it of of STL instead
I just got the first ocarina she showed and mines in b apparently 😅 brilliant start, tbh idk what to do with it now
27 years how the hell
Have you started playing by the age of -4?
That’s young
She was born with a flute in her hand
@@ashutoshshrivastava1931 straight out of the womb
yes she did start when she was 4 actually!
@@jayisjustired bro shut up
I just bought one off of Amazon and it seems fine so far, but idk lol. I'll edit if something bad or good happens
Then where should I get it from?
I'm new here and I'm loving your videos ❤️
Where can I find that fourth ocarina behind you?? It's so perfect 😍
From STL... Brio! I just bought it!
Where do you get those beautiful ocarina stands?! 😱😮😮
Thanks for sharing!
Bought mine from an used video game store. Looks like the more expensive Amazon one in the video. Haven't really tried to learn to play it
I got mine on Amazon- it actually sounds good ! :D
What was the name of it?
Hey!! I have just discovered your channel!
Is it at least useful start with the one made from ceramic?
The thing is that I am from Mexico and got the ceramic one (it was the only option)
It is a 12 hole Ocarina very similar at the one from ceramic you showed...
I don't know how to verify if the Ocarina sound calibrated or not... Any advice??
Thank you very much and thanks for your channel!! I just started to loved it!!
David TM
Love this, REALLY should have looked into it before buying one lmao
What is the far right ocerina in the back? It looks so cool 😩
