I should add that I'm grateful you've delivered this with such great audio quality. Other designers may have the right tips but I simply can't understand what they're saying!
What a terrific video - this was SO much easier than using that pen tool to create outlines! THANK YOU for taking the time to explain it for us newbies!
Many thanks. I am new to CC and have not had time to do a class. Yet, I had to struggle through a project and this video got me through. I appreciate you posting.
Hi Robbie, sorry for the delay. It's still worth experimenting with multiple colours. Use Live Trace as normal, but try selecting and experimenting with different trace modes and settings. You can then 'expand' your live trace and select only the certain colours or shapes you wish to use.
Thanks guys, that was super helpful! I'm preparing some images for CNC cutting and had to covert them. Sometimes when I convert a line drawing, if the line is a little thick, i end up with two vectors - one for each side of the line. Is there an easy way to constrict it to one vector when I trace? Thanks again!
Hello and Thank you for a great Video Tutorial and for easy explanation . my question is : How can I use (save)those Vector Lines for using in other CAD programs to work with ?. thank you
Thank you for your video. After clicking the live trace buttons the lines are not single strokes (which you can adjust easily), but illstrator converts 1 handdrawn line into 2 lines (just like when you use the blob-brush). If I want to change shapes of lines afterwards is difficult because you have to select both anchorpoints ánd the black and white are difficult to manage when you change the anchorpoints. (I am dutch so its difficult to write in professional english, hope you'll understand). Is there a way to convert an handdrawn sketch (scanned in with the computer) into single strokes? Thank you in advance!
I'd like to know how you get that "Quick Access" feature for "Live Trace" to be assessible from that top bar like you have it - I don't have that in my IllustratorCS4 - but I was watching the previous video for this jpeg to vector function, and are you saying in this more current video that that was from 2010? Therefore as I got my CS4 suite around 2010 so I should be able to get this? Yes? If so, HOW?
Hi - I have a logo which I am trying to make into a vector image, its main colours are white with green and pink. For some reason whenever I click image trace it just makes the entire box white?? Do I have to trace the entire logo myself?
I have a doubt to clear. In image trace, after the expand option I can't colour the image. When I change the color the full image becomes the colour I applies. (That means the colour applies to Bounding box also.why ? I am very woried about this. please answer my question
Hi there, sorry about the delay in replying! Please let me know where we can see the image, and what settings you're using. It might just be a case of a setting adjustment.
Hi, Why is it that when I click on Tracing Option, then I change the mode to color, then when I click on preview, the color of the art changes. I can send you the file if it will help. Please advise. Thank you. desiree~
HELP!! Tracing Options is not in my menu on CS6 I'm trying to convert a halftone into vector but each time I use the default setting, it makes the circles into squares. And each time I select one of the other options, the dots disappear. :(
I had to make a live trace and then the options showed up, But it showed up on the left side of the bar. Live trace never works the way I want to to. It tends to remove vectors instead of tracing them It's weird.
Hey i got a problem when i convert jpg colored logo to eps. The problem is following, Logo contains 2 colors Black and Blue plus background which is white, it contains 2 shapes and typography below. When i go path>trace bitmap>color> scans- on 3>update i got like blue outline around my logo and typography below it. The outline shouldn't appear since it dosen't exist. I've tried converting it so many times and i can't get rid of it. Anyone knows how to solve this problem ? PS i need reply realy fast. Thanks in advance.
Hi MiniBlockbusters, Please ask away, we've had some notification issues on our videos, but they have since been resolved last week. If you're able to post your question on here, we'll happily try and reply.
Shame that this doesn't seem to do what I want with a white PNG on transparent background. It doesn't take the transparency over into the vector and instead replaces it with another area of white. More than a little annoying.
I should add that I'm grateful you've delivered this with such great audio quality. Other designers may have the right tips but I simply can't understand what they're saying!

My our experience, it depends on the colours within the graphic. The same results can be achieved with both JPEGs and PNGs.
Thank you so much!

+Fran OnTheEdge I'm not sure if it helps with your version but just in case- in doesn't show up until I select the image.
Hehe... you've grown up guys... thanks for this tyuts!
Thank you! Very clearly stated!
Thanks! Super helpful!!
That was great, thanks !!
What version of illustrator do are you using? I noticed one of the presets is "lettering" and I don't think cs6 has it.
Thanks, very helpful.
thanks dude it's helpfull
Thank you guys!
Finally I got it... thanks =)
Thanks a lot. Well done.
Hi - I have a logo which I am trying to make into a vector image, its main colours are white with green and pink. For some reason whenever I click image trace it just makes the entire box white?? Do I have to trace the entire logo myself?
+Lydia Kennedy Mess around with the image trace/options box.
does the original jpeg/png file have to be high quality resolution for best quality image?
thanks, really helpful
Hi Desiree, what version of Illustrator are you using, and I can try and replicate it.
very very thanks brother
How do you get rid of the white background that surrounds the image after you trace it? I hope you understand what I'm trying to convey.
You have to remember to select the "ignore white" box.
Hello,
I have Illustrator CS5 Mac version
Looking forward to hearing your reply.

Just tried that now. I followed the steps, but the image is still pixelated so surely I'll have to re-draw it?
thank you

Is the live trace on all versions of Illustrator? Because I couldn't find it on my friends version of Illustrator...
I think CS2 on up, Chris.
+Rick Washington Thanks.
Thanks
HELP!!
Tracing Options is not in my menu on CS6
I'm trying to convert a halftone into vector but each time I use the default setting, it makes the circles into squares. And each time I select one of the other options, the dots disappear. :(
same here. Did you find any solution?
I had to make a live trace and then the options showed up, But it showed up on the left side of the bar.
Live trace never works the way I want to to. It tends to remove vectors instead of tracing them It's weird.
SEspider If you go to Window > Live Trace, it gives you some more familiar options. Still a bit different than previous versions.

i don't have tracing options what can i do ?
I keep getting dinged for too many anchor points when I try to use vectors on an online printing service and I don't understand how to adjust that
is there anyway to vectorize a colored illustration??
All depends on the complexity of the initial illustration. Do you have a link to the intended image?
Yeah sure do here

What if your jpeg has more than one color?
Hi MiniBlockbusters, Please ask away, we've had some notification issues on our videos, but they have since been resolved last week. If you're able to post your question on here, we'll happily try and reply.
TNX !!!
Shame that this doesn't seem to do what I want with a white PNG on transparent background. It doesn't take the transparency over into the vector and instead replaces it with another area of white. More than a little annoying.
Yea that is an issue. You could however open in Photoshop, and apply a contrasting background that way, then take it back into Illustrator.
Whenever I Do image trace my png file goes completely white. Please help :(
why did this 5 mins feel like 8 years?
16 years actually
I live trace now called image trace?
Yeah, i seriously can't find one tutorial instructing how to do that. Every one assumes you just need to learn black and white only
Do i really need photoshop to do this? I just want illustrator... Sheesh.
Got an idea! - click Live Trace
I would ask a question but you wont respond to it... please don't ask us to do stuff when you won't hold up your end.
Thanks! great tutorial!
Thank you so much!
So good. Thanks.
I live trace now called image trace?
