Wow, this looks absolutely amazing. I was thinking about doing a custom paint job on the next zoid I bought, but I have an intense fear about being unable to put them together again if I separate all the pieces from their labeled grids (for the kotobukiya master models, not the motor powered tomy models). Is it easy to keep the pieces straight in your head, or would you say only try to custom paint the master models while they are still in their grids, before putting them together the first time?
As long as you have the instructions you are fine. Wouldn't recommend painting them still on the grid cause then there will be little unpainted parts when you remove them
Just one thing, Zoids doesn't really have a single mascot per-say. They've had different ones for each series. For Chaotic Century, it was the Shield Liger and then the Blade Liger after Van's Shield Liger was destroyed. For New Century, it's Liger Zero (and to a lesser extent Liger Zero with the Jaeger armor). Liger Zero is also the iconic Zoid of the Fuzors series, but that series didn't happen. Finally, Zoids Genesis has the Murasame Liger (think Liger Zero with a giant katana and more fins).
Hey man do more of these! & when I first got into making models I tried this method with a master model zoid and the pieces didn't fit back together because of how small the connections are and the paint being too thick. Now I hand paint. But would love to do this on an old school wind up zoid.
I appreciate what you're saying and can't say I haven't had the same thought myself sometimes. But if I'm honest, weathering and artifical aging is a pretty huge part of prop making and it's the part I'm interested in getting better at. The way to do that is by trying it over and over again in different ways. There's no point challenging myself to do something I don't care about, the real challenge wouldn't be making the thing, it would be staying enthusiastic about it when I don't have any particular interest in developing that skill. You wouldn't say 'Yea Michelangelo was good but he never challenged himself by drawing cartoon houses'. He got good at his specific style cause he practiced it over and over. There are ways to challenge yourself while staying in the realm of your niche. For example in this video, I was painting on a type of plastic I'd never really used. It held the paint in a different way so I had to change the way I usually apply certain coats. I learned something. I get though that it might get a little tedious as a viewer to see similar stuff pop up in a bunch if videos, but if I started doing other stuff I would just be lying to myself and that would show in the quality of my content I think.

Do it. Most cheap middle range action figures have decent sculpts but crappy paint jobs. You can make a fifteen dollar figure look pretty damn good.
