After I was diagnosed with cancer, I started chemo immediately. This was 1998 and I was 13. This was the song playing on the radio when my mom and I left the hospital after the first day. I will never forget listening to it while driving (or crawling) down the 405 freeway in Santa Monica. It is truly a "period piece" for me, despite this being a one-hit wonder.

As a teen I spent years in a fairly traumatizing Psychiatric group home, my parents gave me up. My roommate used to sing this to me when I was scared and we were falling asleep. A small act of kindness that still makes me loved when I hear it 20 years later.

Oh no way dude!! Read the comments for almost any song from this era and you'll find loads of people reminiscing! I, too, much prefer it. (Though tbh not this song much.) Even going into the early 2000's is so positive for me (though admittedly that pop became a bit of a different animal.)

Shortly after 2000, "music" switched from being made by artists to being made by "performers". Rap/Hip-Hop and "pop" music killed the art.
Lady Gaga (whose _real_ name is Stehanie something) was an exceptional artist who only became popular after transforming herself into a weirdo wearing dresses made of meat to draw attention to herself.

It was '98 or '99. My friends and I were in high school, and unpacking in our hotel room at a convention. The beds had this odd built-in radio between them. I remember folding clothes and listening to this song through the old speakers. I remember the anticipation of meeting the beautiful girl I only got to see a couple times a year at those conventions. A college friend of mine, then the head of a major broadcasting company in Munich, brought this song back to Germany from a trip to the U.S. and had his DJs play it. It became a huge hit. A little later, the station brought Shawn in for a few smaller concerts. I saw him and his stunning band in Munich: they were awesome. Nothing came of Shawn's international career, probably because he was a rather introverted shy man, at least at that time. He was all about the music, never about the whole business. From the meet and greet I remember him as a very nice, polite, modest guy. I think he's still active in the club scene in and around.

90s is what brought all the new genres to date! Nothing beats the 90s as far as exploration and new beginnings of music. Today's music doesn't have that genre bending and new beginnings.

1998, I was in 4th grade. I called into the local radio station after my parents went to sleep to request this song. I sat with my cassette ready to record. It was too late, I fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of Lullaby, sad I couldn't record it, happy I could still hear the rest of the song.

It wasn't just in one genre either, it was all of them. When artist and producers would have sessions together. They really came up with the most experimental and captivating sounds that just pulled every inch of the soul. That was my type of music.
I think that's what it takes to have a timeless masterpiece.

Easy listening to metal and everything in between, the major stations were paying a mix of pop, rap, blues, country, hard Rock, big band/Ska, punk, alternative, etc. More musical diversity than any other decade ever...

When my wife and I were first married and pregnant with our first child we thought my wife was going into preterm labor. She called me while I was at work panicked and I told her I would head home and take her to the hospital. On my way home I was getting pretty worked up and this song started playing on the radio. Made me a bit more emotional, but I somehow knew deep down things would be alright. 15 years later my daughter is doing well and learning to drive. She's a pain in the butt, but I love her.

That's the mark of an incredible storyteller. Watching the video now, two decades later, I still recognize the girl I was in the past - although she bares no resemblance to who I am now. I am so fortunate to have been born at a time when I could experience the decades of popular music I have heard over the years. Beginning with the sixties and now currently. I have seen it change with the generations that remember the songs from their youth. Every decade has it's favorites. Every generation has a marker in time based on the songs they heard. One thing is certain, and true for myself, you don't appreciate what you are hearing at that time as much as you do now.

One of his friends was even there and didn't do or say anything to help me!! I "Escaped!!"... I did follow through w/ the court to get him " convicted" and won. ( That was a whole year later!!!).... I never went back.. ( even to this day)..... This song helped me soooo much!!!! Even during today!! I hope this helps any of you if well... Whatever you're going through!! But most of all.... This song....Canada... the last two years before the year 2k and me going back to my home country...High School... My friends, whom I've never seen in the flesh since then. Summer...."stealing" my uncle's car and driving along the neighboroud.... playing in that field not far from our house, cutting that 10 dollars in 3 pieces, promising each other to see one day again and reunite it.... those were the best days of my life.

in 1998 i was 15 i use to walk my golden retriever around the subdivision at midnight singing this song out loud with my headphones on, all the houses were in darkness all was silent, little did i know there was a girl 2 streets over that use to wait up for me to come walking by and listen to me sing, one day she told me at the bus stop and i got so embarrassed, then she told me it was the best part of her day, and a couple other girls admitted to listening to me to, i had fans and i never even knew it, we ended up being togeather for 6 years.

Screw the office. I've been listening to this since I was in the back seat playing game boy. Traveling around my child hood town. Hanging out with my parents. It's crazy how times have changed. We've all grown up.

I was in the end of my teens in 1998.. and dating two girls, who I loved both in different ways. This song makes me think of those days, Los Angeles, driving many, many miles.. finding my own niche in this world and finally not wanting to be anywhere else.
That kind of comfort is so truly priceless.

I normally don't share my most personal stories with anyone except those closest to me, which are getting fewer and farther between these days. However, I do feel the need to share this.
This song started hitting the airwaves around the time of my parents' divorce. I was 11 years old and felt overwhelmed by the changing circumstances. I felt that I had to come to terms with so many things in a short time. The music of the time was one of the few constants in my life, and this song stuck out to me lyrically, and I listened to it regularly, making those weekends with my drunken, abusive mother slightly more bearable.
At the time, I tried taking the refrain to heart, but I spent the next five years lashing out at the world. However, I have been harkening back to that as the years have gone.
Looking back, while the events of the time still stress me out, I'm at least glad that I was able to experience and appreciate the zeitgeist that was the 1990s.
