@@IsabelRodriguez-nv2ue yeah I had to read this for school and would always lose my place. Figured someone else could use this.

I can't get the horror of 3 children putting a board on a sleeping dog and all jumping on it out of my mind! But it's a great book. The headmistress of my primary school read it aloud to the whole school and I was too young to follow it so it's really satisfying to hear it now.

I don't really want to be one of those people who say, "Music/books/movies just aren't what they used to be." But seriously. Compare the subject of this to most young adult books today. So many are about magic, vampires, curses, sex and zombies. This book is about hard work, getting an education, showing compassion, balancing relationships, and basically... real life. Sounds boring? There is a stalker, a lot of humor, growth in the characters, and a poignant look at a disappearing resource and way of life. It is truly magical, in that you don't want to leave Eleanor, the swamp and her friends.

I do like any of those other topics, but do agree this novel has an extra something special, while remaining in the realm of realism. I couldn't put it down, and to this day I will reread it every few years and enjoy the details all over again

Why do you think you can't have hard work in a magical story?

I've read A Girl of the Limberlost more than once over the decades also every thing else Porter wrote - I really enjoyed her literature over the decades- today we no longer burn wood or coal for heat in developed Nations but in those days of Porter, they did burn wood and coal for heat- some of the older books, the author would incorporate stirring the coals or adding wood to the fire as a reminder to the reader to stir their own fire they had going during the winter months - they Incorporated adding fuel to the fire - that was part of the storyline to remind the reader to keep an eye on their own fire that they had that was Heating them as they read the book they were reading- if you burn wood or coal for heat it's easy to understand that you can easily get lost in a book and neglected adding fuel to the fire because you've become so intertwined with the book you're reading- one of the authors that mention stirring the fire often in her storyline was Florence Barclay- I don't think any of the books that Porter wrote mentioned stirring a fire but Barclay was from England where it was wet and chilly so she added that to the storylines to remind the reader to get up and stir their fires in their own homes - when you're burning coal or wood in a heater it helps to keep adding small amounts of fuel so that it maintains an even Heat in a fireplace or the Old Time cast iron coal or wood heaters that we're not airtight - my dad was born in 1912 and mention that about the storylines in older books like Barclay wrote

THIS WAS WRECKED BY A COUPLE OF READERS AND ENDED WITH A READER WHO READ WAY TO FAST AND WAS ALWATS TRYING TO CONVEY A JOVIAL VOICE WITH CONSTANT ANNOYING CHUCKLES... SHE WAS WAY TO ANIMATED AND IT WAS HARD TO UNDERSTAND HER.... THE CONSTANT SWITCHING VOICES ACTUALLY CHANGED THE CHARATERS PERSONALITIES.AND MADE IT VERY HARD TO FOLLOW WHO WAS ACTUALLY TALKING... THIS ENDED ON A VERY SOUR NOTE FOR ME...
