  • Anne of Green Gables was published in 1908 and tells the story of a lively and talkative eleven-year-old orphan girl named Anne Shirley who goes to live with Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert, middle-aged sister and brother who live on their farm, Green Gables, located on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The book, the first of a series, has sold over fifty million copies and been translated into 36 languages. There have been stage, TV, movie, animation, anime, and radio adaptions of the book. There is also a delightfully illustrated Anne of Green Gables Graphic novel which the digital edition is free to read if you are an Amazon Prime member. If not check your library or bookstore. My favorite production is the 1985 four-hour Canadian TV series starring out reader, Megan Follows which I’m sure is streaming somewhere. (P.S. This book is not just for girls or children 😉)
    Quotes
“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”
“‘Dear old world,’ she murmured, ‘you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you.'”
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1943) born in New London, Prince Edward Island, Young Lucy experienced tragedy when her mother died of illness while Lucy was still a toddler. Her mother’s parents became her caretakers until her father remarried 4 years later. Lucy began writing poems and short stories when she was young. Miss Montgomery was a school teacher until her paternal grandfather died. She moved in with her paternal grandmother to take care of her for 13 years. She earned extra money with her writing during this time and her career and income flourished upon the publishing of Anne of Green Gables. Miss Montgomery married a reverend and had two living children.
Megan Follows (1968- ) Born in Toronto, Canada, Megan followed her parents into the acting profession. As a teenager she was selected over 3000 other girls for the role of Anne Shirly in a Canadian miniseries of Anne of Green Gables which came out in 1985. Megan gave the performance of a lifetime. Since then she has reprised her roll of Anne twice, and has made appearances on multiple television series such as; Longmire, House, Rabbit Hole, and CSI: Miami. She even played Shania Twain’s mother in a TV biopic about the famous singer. Finally, she portrayed the Queen of France in all 4 seasons of Reign which was a popular and well-reviewed series about Mary, Queen of Scotts. Now enjoy Megan's performance in Anne of Green Gables.
