    Gary! I never knew what your "real job" was. As an Air Force veteran ('83-88) I want to thank you for the help you give to our troops in transitioning back to the civilian way of life. I am currently in VA Voc Rehab at Indiana State for Aviation Management. You all are great!

      I wanted to say Thanks too. That transition isn't easy.
      I still have my moments after getting out of the Air Force 29 years ago.

    That is a cool thing that Gary does for a "job". My family and I were stationed in Hawaii at Ft. Shafter from 1987 to 1992. My youngest son was born there at Tripler Army Medical Center in1987. When I heard about Gary's job it made me appreciate what he does. My son SPC Matthew W. Ward, US Army, suffered a non combat related injury while deployed to Iraq and before the military could do the surgery to fix the injury he died from sepsis on 6/6/09. He was given a full honors military funeral. Yes, I am a Gold Star Mom. I have great respect for the military still to this day and appreciate everything that other people do to help our soldiers, soon to be veterans, and full fledged veterans. My hat is off to you Gary for helping soldiers transition back to civilian life! Mahalo!
    On another note, i wish I had the talent that you have, Shae with painting - you too Bree. And Bryson is so very smart - not afraid to tackle any job. I say this every time and I truly mean it. Your family is wonderful and I enjoy watching your videos! Thank you for sharing your lives.

    What you seem to be aiming for on the bottle flower is called a Gaillardia x Grandiflora, a desert growing perennial (or Annual) That is called a Blanket Flower. Once established, they are drought tolerant and quite colorful! If memory serves me correctly, they belong to the same botanical family as Sunflowers.

    Homesteaders,
    I am sure you already thought of this but I wanna say it anyway. KEEP THE JUNKED SUZUKI!!! You may get an engine and transmission out of it this time but there WILL come a time when you need other parts. You will already have those parts.

    • @TommyboyGTP

      Good idea. I filed small notches on the top edge of my most commonly used sockets (6mm, 10mm, 13mm) so I could identify them by feel if I had to reach for one from an awkward place like on a creeper under a car. The tiny notches won't harm or weaken the sockets, but will make your life easier.

    If the old one had a timing chain problem, I would get a new timing chain and put it in while the new engine is out. Easier to do now as opposed when it is in the vehicle.

    • @chriscmoor
      @chriscmoor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good suggestion. And in the larger scheme of things, much cheaper to do now than to replace another engine.

    • @theducklinghomesteadandgar6639
      @theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wi11y1960
      An excellent suggestion so long as that is all that happened!!! I could be misinterpreting, but Bryson said that some parts knocked each other around or something to that effect, which tells me possible broken and/or bent rods, valve issues and/or crank issue! Even if none of that occured, there is also the possibility of cracked or the more difficult to see, warped head...either though would cause compression/power issues!
      I'm not trying to argue but simply saying one need be aware of these possible issues as well and eliminate them as issue, before spending money on the timing belt! Something that would help would be knowing why it threw the timing! Was it a water issue, an oil issue, causing the engine to overheat and thus stretching out the belt, causing it to be out of time. With aluminum heads it is much easier to warp or crack than the heavier made heads!!!

    • @chriscmoor
      @chriscmoor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 You aren't misinterpreting Bryson, but you are misinterpreting Willy1960. He isn't suggesting replacing the timing chain in the old engine; he's suggesting replacing it in the replacement engine. It will be easier to do while the front of the donor car is off and, with 120K miles on it, that engine is due for a new timing chain/belt. If it were me, I'd also consider replacing low cost but hard to reach parts like the O2 sensor and EGR valve while the hood is off and the front clip removed. I'd also inspect and replace any hoses or wiring showing cracks, deterioration or wear. This would also be a good time to give the suspension on blue Suzuki a thorough inspection while its engine is out and access is much easier.

    • @wi11y1960
      @wi11y1960 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@theducklinghomesteadandgar6639
      The new engine should get a timing chain. The engine they are using is called a interference engine. A interference engine should have the timing chain replaced every 80k miles. The problem with a interference engine is that if you skip a tooth the engine will castrate it self with one revolution.

    • @theducklinghomesteadandgar6639
      @theducklinghomesteadandgar6639 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cool thanks for the info! I didn't know that about an interference engine! I also misunderstood your statement and thought you were meaning they should change the timing belt in their original engine like to use it for back up, but you're meaning they should change it in the replacement engine while it is between vehicles same as they should change the oil, spark plugs and wires and any other regular maintenance stuff while the engine is out to make doing each maintenance job 100 times easier with the engine out than it will be once the engine is under it's new hood!!
      Thanks so much for the response I learned something new!!!

    When you get the engine and transmission out I would go ahead and do some maintenance on the transmission. Nothing like replacing the engine only to have the transmission carp out a few months after. Doing it now will give you a clue, but a small clue, as to the health of the engine, unless you completely tear it down and inspect.
    Of course I could be worried about the transmission since the clutch just went out on my automatic transmission for my truck last week at 172k. That was fun as I was halfway to my destination and in the middle of no where really. 200 miles in only second gear really blows.
    Good luck with the swap and you got a killer deal on that xl7. Plenty of other spare parts to go around for a while. My wife had one for a bit I kinda liked it, but changing the headlight was a pain.
    New outbuilding is looking good. Can't wait to see the finished product.
    Kids, kids everywhere ;P Congratulations on the new additions.

    0:58 that slang word kaputz(?), reminds me of the German adjective kaputt. The definition is very similar. To make something kaputt, means to destroy something, and being kaputt is being exhausted.

    Does Garen even live there anymore? It's been over a year since hewas a regular in these video, not counting the cabin videos. I thought he was living in the camper trailer.

    Thinner only helps drying a little. japan drier helps a lot. For future efforts. Doesn't really dry, like water colors, but polimerizes with oxygen and many complcated reactions.
    The sunflower window is great! Even like the artichokes on it... kidding!
