Dude, you sound just like the soldiers I counsel as they’re preparing to separate from the US Army. They say almost exactly the same thing, almost verbatim. They see many of the civilian young women they met as being strangely competitive with them? Each time one of them says that, I think of this girl boss phenomenon that’s in everything these days? I have no idea if that’s what’s driving it, but these soldiers suggest it is. What really keeps me thinking about this is that these are polite, educated, friendly young men who are interested in finding a soul mate, they’re not out there looking just getting laid. After one or more enlistments, these guys are in there late 20s/early 30s and have gotten all that out of their system. Even so, many of them comment of European women being far more feminine than the women they’ve met stateside. That blew me away, as when I was stationed in Germany the ladies at the Hallenbad wouldn’t bother shaving underarm and it left many of us disturbed after witnessing beautiful women frolicking in the water with full underarm hair. 😅 All joking aside, they often mention a lack of feminine qualities as a constant concern. Rest assured, we don’t focus primarily on their love lives, but soldiers talk pretty openly with one another and I’ve spoken with so many that share similar concerns. It’s kinda sad, really? Seeing my wife for the very first time is one of my fondest memories. I know some of these guys will find love, but I fear the majority of them could struggle to find perhaps the greatest joy in life.
@@ToeCutter0 It's become an epidemic. Or more like a cancer that is spreading to the whole world. It's becoming increasingly difficult to even encounter a woman who is feminine and pleasant to be around- let alone find a woman who is wife material. The few good women that exist in the world get married pretty quickly to lucky men. And it's not bad enough that women have become internally unattractive to men. Now they are also physically unattractive. Most women are now fat, or have tattoos on their bodies, or dress in the most sloppy/slutty way. Very few women actually seem to care what men think about them.
Some men are very masculine, some are feminine. Some woman are feminine, yet some are masculine. Masculin woman and feminine men are completely valid and there is nothing wrong with having such personalities. What Hollywood does is shoving femininity away completely, pretending like it's weak, making woman masculine as hell and selling it as a 'strong female'. Just look at Peter Pan - They completely erased every feminine trait of Wendy and made her a girlboss, aka masculine (in a toxic way). That's the issue here imo.
@@Masteroogway40 I’m pleased to hear someone read the whole thing! It is admittedly LONG. I was going to post an update, but ended up having some incredible conversations with some of the young women who work with my wife. They see her as a mentor. Because my wife has said nothing but good things about me, they were astonishingly OPEN with me about their relationships, or mostly, lack of relationships. What struck me was how these very attractive young women (I’m faithfully married, but still appreciate feminine beauty?) still struggle to find partners? They can find hookups, but they sound as if they’re _emotionally_ lonely. I could tell as they appeared to thoroughly enjoy talking about it as if they haven’t had an opportunity to express their feelings, to anyone. Before I go writing another few paragraphs, I’ll cut to the chase: Speaking to them left me with a great deal of hope for those soldiers I mentioned in my first post. This pervasive feeling of loneliness is described by both young men & women. It still left me questioning why this exists and all I could really come up with was social media? Instead of sitting down and having a face to face conversation, just like they did with me, they have been conditioned to use social media to seek companionship, not just a hookup. I explained that talking to people is still worthwhile and they openly admitted how nice it was to just vent about all this loneliness. Ok, I’m done! Sorry, but taking time to faithfully express one another’s thoughts is just one more thing that social media ruins, despite its great promise. Sounds like modern feminism might suffer the same woes?
Ah, thankfully even more people coming out against this fanfic, narcissistic author-insert, bullshit trend that "professional" writers have adopted. Keep up the good work!
I don't know if it's just the writers. They are hired help. No, I think Disney's problems with their content starts at the boardroom. It's infected all their holdings... Lucasfilm, Marvel, PIXAR...
Great video and astute analysis. I grew up watching a lot of movies, and I remember characters in terminator two, alien, and the princess warrior. I said characters because they were written in detail, and in depth. The fact that they were women was trivial as they had redemption arcs, struggles and growing pains. I miss the days where cinema had some sort of relatability and escapism blended so seamlessly. ✌🏽
The problem is so much writing pigeonholes characters into boring tropes. Characters have to be "Strong" because of their gender says so, or their social standing etc and that makes it stale when they're not strong because of the choices they make in life, the journey they go on trials they suffer etc, but strong "just because" and they're awesome from the start. Don't get me wrong a character can be strong but they can also be petty, cowardly, evil, yes even weak male or female. In fact you can have a weak character with moments of strength, and a strong character with moments of vulnerability. and that diversity in writing characters is lacking.
You make a good point. However, I would say that one of the major issues with most modern movies is the lack of likable actors. I don't mind watching a movie where the protagonist is an unlikable character, as long as the acting is good. But most of these diversity hires are mediocre at best. This generation of actors is no where near the quality of the actors of 30 years ago. I don't know if we will ever again get actors on the calibre of Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, Al Pacino, Arnold Swarzeneger, Robert Downey Jr., Denzel Washington, Leo Dicapprio, etc. Most of the young actors now are of the caliber of Seth Rogan and James Franco.
Here's an idea, Hollywood: instead of focusing on creating strong female characters, why not just create a good, well-written character and it just so happens that they're a woman? Lara Croft, Vi and Caithlyn from Arcane, Toph and Korra from Avatar, they're perfect examples of what a good strong woman should be,.
_"If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it_ _Remember only the verse, songmaker's cry the one without tears_ _For I've given this its strength and it has become my only strength."_ (Tuomas Holopainen, Nightwish, "Dead Boy's Poem") Yeah, for _some_ reason, this quote came to mind... That stark contrast is just insane...
Bo-Katan has been a long established character in the Star Wars universe through the Clone Wars series, she's not a nobody popped up from nowhere just for the Mandolorian.
I don’t find emasculated men entertaining, and these movies seem to have their heroines as emasculating the men. You can build women up without tearing down men. Plus these movies seem to delight in debasing men.
These characters don’t represent real people. Who are these writers who keep writing these characters again and again. These women can easily be represented by one robot for all of the nuances they show
So this has me wondering if I wrote a hateable major character... Literally, the only one of these traits she doesn't display is the raging anger in favor of a silent fury in most cases. Though certain ones can make her take even that approach. Though she has a character arc where a guy sees through this to the insecurities and trauma that cause her to act like this and she gradually learns to talk instead of lashing out and work on a team. (No romance between them or anything, the guy just has a lot of wisdom) Is this just a bad time to wrie such a character? 🤔
I don't mind a girl as a boss, like a character in a story? You know, a 'boss'? but not a "girlboss".. Guess what? Not even a "boyboss".. The key here? Scrolled as far as possible and it just seems like a lot of men love your take down of 'girl-bosses'. Hopefully you've managed to criticise the way some men are portrayed to give the illusion of balance. We all know how much strife and difficulties we men have been through because of these 'girl-bosses'. Let's go back to the old days when we had one or two big movies a year with a female lead, and have them playing romantic interests and supporting characters in the rest. Yay!
Serious, question. What’s there to criticize about how men are portrayed that would be a form of balance? In the modern day, they are normally portrayed negatively, in some IPs universally so. In every one I’ve actually seen, any guy is at best made to look not as good as any major female characters. It compliments the “girl-boss” trope perfectly.
@@John-fk2kyo it doesn't people seem to forgot what a girl boss trope is. You're making it sound like that all girlboss characters are nothing more than man-hating witch which is not the case at all
Mary Pickford was the first star of Hollywood who obviously lead her movies.Look up any female star of the past and tell me she didn't lead her movies most of the time. Betty Davis was also a superstar known to play edgy roles that involved bad characteristics (watch Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? for a movie that has two female leads with nothing to do with men). She won two Oscars and was nominated countless times. Lauren Bacall and Jane Russell were also known for playing tomboyish, non feminine characters. Maybe take a look at actual history before making assumptions.
@@unapologeticanti-feminist3205 Wow, you named FIVE actresses from the 40s that played roles outside the norm. I’ll help you out and add Katherine Hepburn. Also, saying Jane Russell and Lauren Bacall played ‘tomboyish’ roles tells me you have no understanding of any of the films they’ve been in. Strong female characters are not tomboys - They are strong female characters. Hepburn also falls in that group. We can debate any of this if you want. I grew up on a steady diet of films, film documentaries and ended up studying film. You also failed to mention how difficult things got for those great female actors and any others that stood their ground because they were seen as stubborn and ‘difficult to work with’ by male studio heads. It would only be fair if your name the hundreds of male actors who didn’t have to struggle much to get films made.
I get your point, but it misses perspective... and makes assumptions about the hows and whys... It could be that the writers and producers are the ones driving these characters... but it could be that the marketers and merchandisers are driving them as well or instead... They make be stoking the flames of narcississitic righteous anger because it makes a better consumer.
Not really. If you go to a toy store you will see that the toys of these characters do not sell well. I don't think I've ever met a little girl who plays with Star Wars toys or who says they want to be Rey. These companies forget that it is the parents who ultimately decide what toys they will buy for their children. And most moms will not buy toys for characters that are unlikeable.
From what I’ve seen, she USED to be interesting, but that became less and less true the longer she was Captain Marvel instead of Miss Marvel. The current reboots (they tried, a lot) range from “meh” to “I feel cheated”.
The original Captain Marvel was a black woman. But for some reason they decided to do the white version. Funny how none of the liberals brought this up when they announced the casting of Captain Marvel. Just goes to show how dumb they are.
I miss the real heroes sometimes. You have to go off of the mainstream to find them though. Truly strong characters are not loners, they're leaders. And the best leaders know that leading is serving. I'm working on a couple of films with female heroes who are actual people. Intelligent and strong willed yes, but not angry narcissists; they don't get to have anything handed to them by screenwriter fiat, they have to earn it. They'll end up asking men for help with some things. They'll have love interests. They'll have friends. Right now we're looking for funding. The studios would never fund these films. We don't like girl bosses, even though 2/3 of the crew (including the director) are women.
You do realise that writers don't just have the freedom, right? The writer can't just write whatever they like, they are instructed to and if you refuse they will just find someone that will do it. You can't blame writers for just doing their job.
@@helion_ut then why do most of them hype themselves up about writing the worst shit. The writer of the last ant man film acts like he did nothing wrong.
@@mightquinnable That's NOT most of them. It's specifically leftist Hollywood writers. Yes, they can suck, yes I can't stand some of them, too, like the She Hulk writers, but that is not the general writer scene, it's a miniscule minority. They picked out the writers they need for their ideological bs- Writers being payed jackshit is a genuine problem and wishing all writers to fail, which btw very well could mean their life being totally screwed, just because Hollywood cherrypicks the writers with the right ideology and allows them to speak up abt their shit is total madness.
No, that's not the definition of insanity, dammit. I wish people would stop repeating that inane line. We should redefine insanity as repeating that stupid definition when it isn't even remotely true.
It's funny how when you describe why this trend is bad, I can do nothing but think of how many male roles fill those exact same criteria, to no criticism. I mean entire genres are built on "man-boss" tropes, and Mary Sue characters like Superman or Neo, so idk why its so nefarious to have women in similar roles, unless you don't think they are equal and don't belong.
"To no criticism" is completely false. They are severely criticized. You cite Superman as an example. Do you realize how many people hate Superman precisely because he's a Mary Sue? Sure, he has a lot of fans, but most Mary Sues have more fans than haters. As to Neo, a lot of people ridiculed him when The Matrix was released, and still do. Of my friends who saw the movie, maybe one or two liked Neo, and the rest thought he was absurd. I'm not sure where you get the idea that everyone likes Neo. I've always been a little curious as to how all the people who make this argument are able to ignore so many voices. Do you assume they're trolls?
I feel like execs are starting to realise that it’s box office poison so now they need to decide what’s more important to them, pandering to rad feminists who make up a tiny fraction of the moviegoing audience or making accessible movies that are actually enjoyable and that make money. They got a taste with Spider-Man No Way Home and Top Gun Maverick, now they need to start connecting the dots

Man I miss when women were like that.
All joking aside, they often mention a lack of feminine qualities as a constant concern.
@@ToeCutter0
That was really interesting.
You should be paid a million dollars for your in-depth analysis of this topic. Thank you so much!
All female characters are now Vurca from Willy Wonka. I WANT IT NOW!! imagine every female character as a unchecked spoiled brat was the norm. youck
Nice work, very comprehensive analysis
You are very good at making video essays
I can only hope it ends in a couple years… odds are it’s going to get worse. 😭
_"If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it_
_Remember only the verse, songmaker's cry the one without tears_
_For I've given this its strength and it has become my only strength."_ (Tuomas Holopainen, Nightwish, "Dead Boy's Poem")
Yeah, for _some_ reason, this quote came to mind... That stark contrast is just insane...
Bo-Katan has been a long established character in the Star Wars universe through the Clone Wars series, she's not a nobody popped up from nowhere just for the Mandolorian.
However, she USED TO BE more flawed, more nuanced and had to struggle. She did not get stuff handed to her the way Mandalorian Season 3 did.
We need more Emily Blunt's in Hollywood.
Still angry she never got to be Black Widow!
I don’t find emasculated men entertaining, and these movies seem to have their heroines as emasculating the men. You can build women up without tearing down men.
Plus these movies seem to delight in debasing men.
Thank you
These characters don’t represent real people. Who are these writers who keep writing these characters again and again. These women can easily be represented by one robot for all of the nuances they show
Si basically this very intelligent video define 《girlboss trend》as 《being Maleficent, mistress of evil》
Ready to curses because of 《no invitation》?
So this has me wondering if I wrote a hateable major character... Literally, the only one of these traits she doesn't display is the raging anger in favor of a silent fury in most cases. Though certain ones can make her take even that approach. Though she has a character arc where a guy sees through this to the insecurities and trauma that cause her to act like this and she gradually learns to talk instead of lashing out and work on a team. (No romance between them or anything, the guy just has a lot of wisdom) Is this just a bad time to wrie such a character? 🤔

Here's a question. So Rey force lifts all those boulders. Why doesn't she fling them at the First Order? Sure they might not destroy all the Walkers but they'd knock them around. She-Hulk was a horrible story and had no character development at all. Worst it wasn't funny at all.

Well something I disagree with you not all girl bosses are bad some are likable like princess peach
You're making it sound like that all girlboss characters are nothing more than man-hating witch which is not the case at all
@@animezilla4486 Name a modern girl boss who doesn't treat men like they are idiots.
Extreme narcissism is a pleonasm 🙂

This shit does not sell! They keep losing money. What’s the point?
Dumb question time: what video is playing in the intro?
Kings & Queens by Ava Max
Captain Marvel is not a bad character. She is an interesting character in the comics. The problem is Brie Larson playing her.
Lagertha from Vikings would've been perfect to play Captain Marvel.
Yeeep help us boys what we even did
Interesting.
Also Girl Bosses in real life are not good people or well liked. They are no different than the male bosses they try to copy.
whats the point of the movie if so easy
Best of luck!🍀
Don't the actions of the girl bosses reflect how women typically are in real life? Especially feminists?

Again, Hollywood specifically hired those kinds of writers for their agenda, they didn't throw a dart and it just happened to be assholes. They picked out the writers they need for their ideological bs-
Writers being payed jackshit is a genuine problem and wishing all writers to fail, which btw very well could mean their life being totally screwed, just because Hollywood cherrypicks the writers with the right ideology and allows them to speak up abt their shit is total madness.

Exactly lmao
