- The only other time that a Bass Sax has played with Tower of Power, was when TOP alum and SNL Musical Director, Lenny Pickett, played Bass Sax with the band. For only the second time in the band's history, California-native, Chuck Hansen, adds his Selmer Bass Saxophone to TOP classic, You're Still A Young Man. Watch Doc and Chuck play Bari and Bass on the eighth-note pops. The first time Doc played Bari and Chuck played Bass, together, was on Doc's most recent CD, Bumped Up To First Class, co-produced by Doc, Chuck, and TOP alum, Jeff Tamelier.
After all these years of playing, Doc deserves his own stunt double!
Artists include Emilio Castillo, Stephen Doc Kupka, David Garibaldi, Francis Rocco Prestia, Larry Braggs, Jeff Tamelier, Tom E. Politzer, Roger Smith, Mic Gillette, and Aldolfo Acosta
Tower of Power is in a class all my themself and is really my favorite band of all time. Their music is timeless for sure
The singing isn’t great at all. He was trying way to hard
Today is Mic's funeral and he is on my mind and in my heart. This song is so very special to me. That night in Sacramento, Mic dedicated this song to my dad for his 86th birthday. I love watching how Mic took his hat off and pointed to dad in the audience during this song. We will always love you MIc. Thank you TOP for the dedication and to Chuck Hansen for this video.
Whose Funeral?? Not Micheal Jeffries.. What?
Loved Mic. Peace my friends. Keep it swingin’.
RIP Mic 😂❤
❤🎺 ❤ RIP MIC
We first saw a TOP in Cleveland Ohio at the Agora when they just released East Bay Grease. No one knew them, there were maybe 20 people in the audience. The next time they came back to Cleveland you couldn't get into the club. One of the greatest groups of all time and should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. They are real musicians and have "Soul with a capital S."
Tower of Power has the greatest horn section ever assembled. On top of that they have one of the greatest drummers I have ever heard. And on top of that they are still recording and touring to this day. God bless Tower of Power.
I haven't picked up a horn in 45 years & these guys are pushing me into that direction. Music brought me back from grevious depression. Music & musicians never die; they keep the world on an even keel. Music literally saved my life but that's another story.
GREAT , BUT NOT THE GREATEST.
douglas mackey you have limited experiences theres alot outthere you dont even know top was alright listen to ALL CHICAGO CTA THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND
@@loverofmusic4life and where is your list, lmaooooooooo
Rhythm section is just as HEAVY as the horn section. They are a total band and should be in the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame they are Soul with a capital S
absolutely AMAZING!!! ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS OF ALL TIME!!!
So sad to announce that Mic Gillette, original trumpet player with TOP, died yesterday, January 16, 2016, of an apparent heart attack, age 64. Taken too soon.
+HansenFamilyFilms ..way too soon.
Amazing. I am most impressed with the 2nd trumpet player who effortlessly switches from trumpet - including high register - to bass trombone and even vocals. Wow !
Mic Gillette 😊 RIP😢
God, I grew up listening these guys. Heavy influence on my music that's for sure. Amazing sound. Peace.
your still young man is a bad ass song and it will always be
I grew up listening to it when i was younger and still do
My favorite studio trumpet player, Mic Gillette! He was my mentor from our days recording at Wally Heider’s for Jimmy and Suzi Foot and secured studio work at Different Fur and The Record Plant. Mic also secured my overdub work on 7 tracks for Doc Kupka’s Strokeland Superband-Kick it up a Step Album at Rick Duncan’s NACNUD Studio in Lodi.
Chuck Hansen and Doc should have been mixed hotter for the optimum impact.
and what a sight. When they had MUSIC in the schools kids learned how to sing and play it -REAL MUSIC without breaking a sweat.
i love this song. i love TOP. Only one person can sing this song, Rick Stevens.
Aretha Franklin favorite band, what CLASS she had🥰🥰🥰😎😎😎😎
Tower Of Power? You've never heard of them? Well, let me tell you all about them. NO. Just take a listen at pure perfection. The greatest funk horn band in the history of music. Enough said. Don't anyone else post cause I've said it all.
+austin teutsch I guess you've never heard of the Horney horns, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. Enough said!
@@molle04 Mainstream? Never heard of them. In order to BE in the mix, you have to have a fan base. I've been in the music business for 53 years and those acts can't hold a candle to TOP. There are millions of great players in bedrooms and garages across the world. You don't know a thing about the music business.
Like Blood Sweat n Tears and Chicago, alwayz love the horn bands. Everything now is so cheap. Classic.
Elvin Bishop had "The Horns" on tour in 75
What more can be said....all we need is Lenny Williams singing vocals!
yasss. it's not Lenny Williams, but he sounds good.
*the late Rick Stevens original lead singer on this song tho❤*
RIP Mic Gilette
First time I've caught "friends of Bill W" in a song. Lovin this stuff ❤
Absolutely beautiful and timeless. Thanks so much for posting!!!
Los metales son SENSACIONALES. Me encanta ésta super banda pero el camarografo descriminó gaaacho al vocalista negrito sandía, mi primo. Eso no se vale. No es correcto
No to the singer, Rick Stevens was the best!
Larry Braggs, hands down the best Tower of Power lead singer
yeah, why not showing the lead singer ? Anyway, thanks, brings a lot of good memories in the Philippines, like Saturday night house parties.
Looks like he's using a Brilhart Level Aire mouthpiece.
The best BAY BAND ever, voice, horns guitar, keyboards, drums you name it.
3 people are clueless. One of the coolest bands ever.
*majestic❤*
My Dad's favorite band. I'm gonna dedicate this song to him & my mom's 40th Anniversary!
Rick Steven's owns this song. Nobody will perform it better.
I'd love to hear a bass sax solo within that context.
Quality stands the test of time Bagdad by The Bay I"m down .
Yes, I think it was the Radisson Inn. It was four years ago this Sept, since my dad will be 90 this September. Mic played taps at my sister's funeral, we didn't even ask him, he "asked" us if he could play for my sister. It was so very touching, something I will never forget. He is the most amazing person, not just his talent.
this is the coolest thing I have ever seen
Love the song... I'm a long time fan, but this lead singer doesn't do a good job in my opinion.
F A N T A S T I C - i wish i could see them live
Doc on Bari, Hansen on bass Sax, Gillette on bone. That's a tight bottom end..
The Great Mic Gillette is the man wearing the Black Hat.
I live in Ireland and have made trips to New York many times to see TOP.
Time For Hemp
I tip my hat to the bank This song is over 35 years old and still sound good...
Way more than 35 years TRY 50+
Can't wait to see tower of power live in November! Best band of all time! Wow
I have a hard time getting down like that and back up without my sax. I can't imagine doing it with a bari or, God forbid, a bass sax, neither of which my back and neck can support just standing still.
Great band ever assembled!
This is a complete band all in itself. Excellent vocals who also play their instruments-horns ( saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonist etc) that can actually sing and harmonize,,, my,my, my
I love this song. it reminds me of every year going to the Kern County Fair and seeing them with my mom, my best friend and most of all my God parents. My god father passed and that yr we went without him and all of us cried our hearts out to this song. This song will alway remind me of him. thank you for posting this video
The horn section on point
Why the video Grapher did not show the lead vocalist
God Bless you Mic We will miss you.
These are some bad white boys! The are so soulful!
I just may go see you in Laconia next month 🎶😀
Nice shout out to the friends of Bill W.
Miss Lenny Pickett 😮
@GlasartGal ...WOW! A Great feelin' to see these guys play again...I've always always loved them and their music...From Guam to you all...Hafa Adai! Si Yu'os Ma'ase...means Hello and Thank you and God Bless! Keep it coming! asta ki, si florencia!
Wow! this is real music - the 70s - keeps us alive!
I've heard this band play this song with several lead singers and everyone OF THEM tore it up. The TOP, set a standard that not many have reached. So many groups in the 70s used their horns section. They earned their place in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Thanks for posting!
Where is David Garabaldi
To all the friends of Bill W.
Just caught em at Jazz Alley Seattle still bringin the funk...soundin good!
CJ San Francisco- HP
Mic was my hero!!
they did a free concert in long beach ca in the park in the 80s lovef it
Yes, love this music on Sundays
Just make me cry... so emotional!!
Back in the day a lot of young men lost their virginity to this song
I may be mistaken, but I believe Doc was listed in the credits of an early TOP album as playing Bari sax, Bass sax & oboe. You can clearly hear the bass sax notes on 'Man From The Past'.
As a SF/East Bay boy, I grew up not only listening to TOP, but playing some of their songs in a band (I'm a keyboardist). They ARE the soundtrack of the SF/Bay Area, and not a week passes that I don't play one of their songs
Nice
THERE WAS AND WILL ONLY BE 1 MIC GILETTE, MEMORIES OF YOUR PLAYING WILL LAST MANY YEARS. YOUR ARE NOW IN THE BIG BAND OF THE SKY,
Ya Ya Ya! I've seen them many times over the years. Best performance...at the Fresno Fair for Free! Believe it or don't! Outstanding.
Git it now
mic came to my high school a few weeks ago :)
Just heard too. Kind of in shock esp since he has been looking younger than the others! OMG I just saw them at the Arcada a couple of years ago, and was googling their tour info, wanting to see them again, and saw the CNN notice. This is the best because as good as the singers were, esp this one, it was the brass, the whole point, and I have always loved them, raised on our local talent in Chicago, with many brassed out bands, I remember seeing many at church basement dances. Like CTA before they were Chicago, BSandT, Ides of March, American Breed, the list is long. So sorry to hear, RIP and prayers to the family.
I also loved this specific video for the shout-out he gives to friends of Bill W
Gosh, I don't remember the name, just what everything looked like. It was a hotel because we were in Mic's room before the show. If Chuck Hansen checks in with this thread maybe he would remember since he was there as well. Mic's on vacation, or I could ask him or my cousin. And yes, it was am memorable night.
This awesome group, and this awesome song take me back to when I was a a 14 year old teenager 👍 thank you 😊❤️🙏✌️😎
Chic
Lol that's Mic Gillette for you. And that's not a bass trombone btw, it's a King tenor trombone with an F-attachment.
I remember this song in the summer of 1972 before I was to start high school in Lodi California and this song sort of was my theme song for me. Oh the youth in me wanting to love these high school girls but I was too young mentally but oh i wish now to go back to that mental state and make it up.
It's rare to even see one of these horns, much less hear one played. Thanks.
thank you very much. this song will live forever.
totally love it when they go "down on my knees" in all seriousness.
This song reminds me of going to watch my cousins' band "Circle Band" practice (Macon, GA). My cousin Craig Simmons was the coolest cat I knew. He sang lead vocals; and played trumpet & keyboard. They played popular R&Band original compositions. Love you Cuz! It's wonderful to reflect, but not get caught up in it. We need more instrumental bands, it's a dying art. Digitally created music can never replace the essence of actual instruments. Young heads, embrace the foundation.
if you don't know what this song is saying, or never felt this way toward a woman, brother you have never really been on love.
It's like a time machine going back to my high school days.. Full o singing dancing and laughing.
@BerlinLynn ...Embrace every moment!
You're still a young man,luv that song! It will be my all time favorite in this life time...
It might have been at the Woodlake Inn which is now called the Raddision Inn depending on the year?
Mic left his mark on earth ...yes he did....😊
The guy in the plaid shirt and black hat looks like boxer Roberto Duran. lol
sac
this is some legit music right here... thanks for the upload.
こうやって演奏を一生続けて、みんなに役立ってもらいたいと奴らは思ってんだろうな。
まだ若けっんだからさ、くよくよすんなよって歌ってるね。
they did a free concert in long beach ca in the park in the 80s lovef it
Oh my goodness
yasss, the Tower of Power playing now!!!
How can you not love a horn section with a baritone sax?
You don't see the big ol' bass sax right infront of the bari?
temujin teh weird sorry, my bad. Not a musician, just a listener
One Chuck to another, nice job with the best horn band ever!
Where can you find a performance like this these days?!!
Yes!
thanks for the recognition
One of the alltime best horn sections ever.
Awesome Music! I have never seen them in concert. I would love to see them.
