Are you able to make an updated version of this? I has been a very long time and I think, it is time to make an update on what to grab and what not to grab anymore.
Great idea Verno, seems a few people want a similar guide. I might be able to make one right before the open beta wipe so I can put all the currency thats going to disappear to good use!
Ah! I probably should have mentioned that! You use them to craft with. Either transmute/alteration them or chance/alchemy them. I have a video on the crafting items and how they work if you want more info on that.
Pretty much all of Normal and Cruel difficulty just use what you find and keep any currency rarer than Alchemy Orbs. As for crafting, craft good blue items if you need them and if you are desperate use an alchemy orb occasionally. Though of course the overiding anser is to have fun with it and feel free to explore how the crafting system works with a bit of experimenting. It's the best way to learn it.
Good idea, looks like a few people are asking for a currency crafting guide so I'll try and get something together. Might be a good thing to do right before open beta so that I can use all my currency items in one go ;)
Ah thanks Quiestre, that was one I hadn't thought about. 6 sockets, even unlinked aren't too common and they are definitely worth picking up for the jewelers. And yeah, all maps, I forgot that category! I may pick up quality weapons/armor right at the start of open beta but I find whetstones/armorers scraps aren't that scarce, even just from drops. 20% ones are always worth it though (if you notice them) as they trade directly for an orb.
Great guide, especially for the fact that I doubt I would have given a second thought to white items before looking at this, but checking for multiple sockets and then simply upgrading the rarity of the item is a solid type that I likely would have entirely skipped over.
Gotta thank you for these vids, im planing to start playing for the first time in a few hours, and these videos waded threw alot of the BS and confuseing conflicting info out there,by exsplaining it in a basic straight foward way. now i can start playing while being informed.
There are microtransactions for both additional premium and standard stash tabs on the official site. You can get a few more for less than $5 and it supports the game's development!
I've made a few videos on good places to farm but here is a list: Act 1 - The ledge Act 2 - The Forest - The Western Forest - Fellshrine - Waterfall caves Remember diminishing returns start when you are 3 levels above the zone.
You don't always upgrade gems. Sometimes you purposefully don't level them to avoid increasing mainstat requirements or mana costs. A common one in closed beta was lightning arrow as back then levelling it up increased the mana costs by quite a lot.
I was thinking of doing guides to the 'keystone' passives eventually, probably once I have a build that uses them! So blood magic would be one of the first ones I cover ;) Good idea on the trading video, I'll try and make something soon that covers the process and how to barter/price/etc.
Pure evasion/block melee is great in PvP and against single target but against large groups you can still die quite quickly. For general PvE content Haxden's advice is the best - going for iron reflexes. Dodge/evade may be getting rebalanced in the future but no firm words yet.
I mainly play solo. You have to be quick if you want loot in PUGs ;) Best option is to find people who have a system you agree with (or whom aren't jerks) and friend them for later.
It improves the effectiveness of the item it's on (armor damage amount healed gem effects etc). You can sell one item with 20% quality or combined items to 40% quality for the relevant quality orb.
Item level is linked to the level of enemy that dropped the item and it represents the potential power of the item. HIgher item levels can get higher magical properties and more sockets.
Yeah the recipe I know is five of the exact same identified rares will trade for an unid version of that rare. It's essentially a free alchemy orb so you want the individual rares to be worth less than 1/5th of an alchemy orb.
You can't farm for them as a drop specifically, they are just part of the massive loot table and each has a chance of dropping provided they are an appropriate level for the zone. However, any gem that is given as a quest reward can be 'farmed' by simply levelling that particular class to that quest. This is obviously not hugely practical for higher level gems but it's good for anything in normal difficulty.
Nice video! I have been playing PoE for a while, but there was still some very useful tips. I didnt know the 3 different linked sockets = chromatic orb!
That unique isn't worth too much to sell but it can be a handy one to keep if you want to make a blood magic spell caster (witch etc). And I've made videos on pretty much all of those things! You should check out my 'Path of Exile Beginner's Start Here' playlist! I'll keep adding to it as I go as well ;)
At the very start pick up most things so you can learn what all the gear is like. Then just pick up what you need. Need a better pair of gloves? Pick up all gloves until you find some. It's not optimal but it's the best way to learn the game.
I tend to pick up rares because if certain rolls are present (like +1 to socketed gems or %chaos resistance) they'll vendor for alch shards, which are always nice to have.
Today's PoE video is a bit longer but hopefully it's got some good info you guys get value from. Please feel free to add in your own suggestions (especially if there are any niche recipes you aim for) and feel free to ask questions, they often inspire videos like this one so I appreciate it!
Unless you plan on levelling alts then lower ilvl rings and amulets are not worth much to you. You can trade them to other players or if they are rare use them in the (soon to be changed) chaos orb vendor recipe.
GCP=gemcutter's prism, hard to get but when you got one dropped or from vendor , you can trade it for an end game gear, not amazing ones but enough for farming maps. or trade it for a set of gems or several alchemies to build your end game character. In my opinion, do pick up all rares, even if you only play one character, you can vendor them into alteration orbs. they can use to buy jeweller orbs or fusings, or used them on maps
Thanks for the awesome video. If you could do a video on actual trading, like "hey I'm going to trade this for that and this is why it makes sense" that would be awesome. Another request would be a video for explaining the skill nodes on the edges (I don't know their names) but one is called Iron Reflexes and the other that I know is Blood Magic and talk about which character would take what. Much appreciated!
Answer to last comment Rodney Langley, the linked slots means that you can link abilities and support gems in your item and it will be linked. For example. Ice nova and a item can be linked. Provided they have the right slots.
Thanks for the video! I watched it, and I was playing as I watched it, and found 2 quality flasks, a quality gem, a support gem, a 4 link shield and a 15% gold ring which is a pretty good find for 10 minutes of playing. I'm not sure how the video helped but thanks anyway!
Thanks for the video. If possible, I would also highly appreciate a video which provides information about rares and which stats are good and which dont. Right now, I have trouble deciding whether a rare item is good or not.
You might want to include some info on Rare items you might want to keep (thus not sell to vendors), to make use of Vendor recipes like Chaos orbs for example. Rare Rings, Amulets, and Belts are far rarer to find than rare weapons and armors, so you should keep them, even though they have horrible stats. You can use them later to complete the Chaos orb Recipe.
I would add 6 socket Items because you can vendor them for 7 jewlers orbs. And of course Maps, pick up all maps. Another thing, maybe for OB are 20% gear, either weapons or armors, because you can vendor them for the % orbs (blacksmith and scrap)
I've found that hording scrolls is truly useful. I seem to find tri-color links in the shop for 1x Scroll of Wisdom. Which in turn can be turned around into a Chromatic Orb. Sure, it's slow. You can't argue the logic though =]
Hey Ziggy, could you do a follow up video or maybe just explain what other White items are worth picking up, especially towards end game. For example, I often see streamers running around and picking up certain white items in high level maps. Harbinger Bow seems to be a popular pickup among others. I finally got to grinding some lvl 70+ maps in Beyond and feel like I could be missing out on some potentially valuable craftable items.
Typically item level 75+ jewellery and 77-78 weapons and armor that are popular. The latter depends on what builds are popular, with Tornado being popular Harbinger is a current example.
Nice Vid mate :) I would have not wasted so much time if you've made this Vid sooner like few months ago lol :P Love the game so far and am waiting for Alpha. If you don't mind, I would suggest you make a video explaining how each particular currency works...that i think would really help new players a lot...coz up until today, i still have no idea what some currency does, for instance Blessed Orbs (Noob here)...
I had a gold ring that had the 15% increased rare items thing, I decided to gamble and add another enchantment and it added another 10%, so it ended up being 25% increased rarity of items. Combined with other gear it's almost 40% and I'm like level 23 on 1st playthrough. Rares and orbs and stuff drop like crazy.
Part I'm trying to figure out is if I should identify items or not. Always short on scrolls. =\ Currently I just identify rares and that works, cause the 6 modifier ones give you better trades, and you cannot get that on a blue. Getting sick of the diablo style drops though, ugh. All 10-15 level lower drops on appropriate level zones. Thankfully this game has good replay value.
Oh thank you, I must've missed that video! Personally I'm not playing in HC yet, though. I'm only just in cruel of default league, and it can be pretty confusing how much differs between default and HC.
U forgot to mention vendor recipes. If you trade a whole rare set to the vendor you get a Chaos Orb or 2 if all items are not identified. So I would say get all rares u can and just bank them,
It's pretty much a gamble, though you can influence it by making the item quality first. My biggest advice for this is to never craft the item you are using, use a backup until you can get the other one right otherwise you can leave yourself stuck with not enough links or the wrong color sockets.
seems they fixed that. however new thing has happened. i was buying stuff...and not paying for them. not sure if it was a one time deal or what. would say i need an orb of fusing, i had none....i could buy. and nothing came out of my inventory. then i couldn't buy another. i will see if its like that tomorrow or not. during the race event that did not happen
Hello ZD, im a newcomer to PoE and im starting to enjoy the game already, im only a lvl 12 marauder atm but a lot of doubts come into mind. At what point for example should i worry about crafting or currency items? Every single item that i mention on the video description is to be vendored to a city vendor right?
I got to cruel now with my Shadow, and i feel stuck, my gear (including skill gems are really bad). Where should i farm for better gear? So far i havn't seen anyone talk about POE runs. Great video btw
i appreciate the summary in the description. so many shit tier youtubers make 30 min long videos that could be written in a single paragraph. i really appreciate it
I meant to ask this in a previous video though was so interested in learning the game, what is the point of having linked slots? Im completely new to the game, only played like 5 minutes and see it is a game I will enjoy.
Haha, what exactly do you disagree with? The only thing I'd probably drop from this list after 6 more months of PoE experience is blue flasks for alch shards, probably not worth the effort.
ziggy. 1st of all thx for all you PoE vids. has made the game very enjyable for me. I'm currently lvl 50 with your infernal blow marauder build and having a blst (literally :) ) My Question: i has a blue chest piece drop that was 6 blue sockets. not all linked. i sold to vendor and got 7 x jewellers orbs. happy days. was this because it was 6 sockets? or because they were all the same colour? thx
Just got my 1st unique, Malachai's Simula Iron Mask, and dont know what to do with it... since its a unique should i try to sell it to a vendor or a player, is it worth it? ZD have u considered doing a basic or a in-depth general leveling guide for all new players around? With the recommended level brackets for each area for example and maybe some recommended builds, together with what should the new players pick up or not on the early levels, general tips and whatever u think is best to know?
Do you have any tips on how to figure out prices and stuff. If I find a 5-6L white that I personally don't want, how can I make sure I get a fair price from someone who might need it? (I have no clue even the range of these things) Also, is it worth picking up these items for trading if you're in cruel, or is this strictly merciless end-game map farming or whatever?
>What Items are worth picking up >Cash Seems to work so far, I started accumulating currency, great tip A++ will cash in again. >I wonder if this works in diablo 3 too
portal scrolls to vendor = wisdom scrolls -> ID items -> alteration shards -> alteration stones (X2) = jewellers orb). Detonate dead is another that is probably not worthwhile leveling up.
Holy helpful. Level 37 templar and had no idea regarding crafting and item level. When do you recommend to start farming? Is it worth farming when you are in Act III and Level 37? Should I wait till I move up a difficulty level and start farming Act I?
Partially because I'm insane. Partially because it's nice to have some to craft with whenever you want to roll and alt character. But mostly insanity...
Ziggy! Should I start farming for currency to buy uniques for my lvl 29 Ranger, or should I wait until I complete the game, start another league and farm the weapons myself? Thanks! :D
Try this video I made recently! /watch?v=9dwu4vhZwwU While there is a market for levelling rares in HC I don't really think it's worth the time so I'd just suggest picking up things you can potentially use.
Eh, I was doing good as an archer for a while but when I grab some armor I thought was better selling the old I quickly learned I lost about 60 dps and the enemies I had to fight where taking very little dmg. So to avoid this from ever happening again what stats should I be focusing on? So I do not pick up junk.
+N Franktopus Yeah this is core game knowledge, and is pretty much always true. There are new things to pick up, sure (like divination cards) but this all remains true.
heey, how i can get gears for my build? buying for other players? or all types of gears, like, 5L or 6L drops? where it drops? and where i can buy from others players
Find them, trade for them or craft them! Trading is the easiest way though. 5l and 6 links dont drop in specific areas, they can drop anywhere as long as you are high enough level. Here's my list of gearing guides. th-cam.com/play/PL4aZrsY9M5qA8WLD2MsKMfuVtc6YJnHX0.html
***** With the advent of the strongboxes, look to use a Orb of Transmutation on all unenchanted boxes. Finding ones with the +1 extra socket is good to look out for. It helps finding 5L and 6L or just 5s and 6s items. This is how I supplement my farming. Coming across a strongbox is like heaven sometimes.
Just curious - does Ziggy have shadows completely disabled in this video, or were the beta graphics that bad? I played in open beta and I don't remember having a lack of shadows.
Is it worthwhile to pick up gavels for this recipe? As in: Gavel + 4 blacksmith whethstones + tier 1 map = 1 chisel Are we gaining or losing currency with this recipe?
+devin uluç he explained in another vid and its gaining currency also you should chance it for a chance of a mholnernjgfasiohfjohfuioh how ever its called
you might add always picking up 6 socket items regardless of their links, since you can vendor them for 7 jeweller's orbs.
Are you able to make an updated version of this? I has been a very long time and I think, it is time to make an update on what to grab and what not to grab anymore.
wtf
LOL
Honeyball Lecter ir
Cody Miller 2018 and still a good guide
Yeah I get the same advice from more updated guides, though this one is very clear made and easy to understand.
Great idea Verno, seems a few people want a similar guide. I might be able to make one right before the open beta wipe so I can put all the currency thats going to disappear to good use!

I've bought quite a few good items from the vendors over time so it's definitely worth checking! I once found a 5 linked chest in one O_o

Useful guide to basics of what to pick-up particularly for item progression in the Hardcore league.

Just started playing closed beta a few days ago and this is some very nice info. Thanks Ziggy
Cheers for making the video :) Definitely informative, lots of stuff I had no clue about (chromatic orbs for tri-colour sockets, etc.).
The stat that's on the item even when it's white, so health on coral rings and dexterity on jade amulets etc.
Nice video! I have been playing PoE for a while, but there was still some very useful tips. I didnt know the 3 different linked sockets = chromatic orb!

Ah that's awesome! Shows the power of just being aware of things, even subconsciously.
This is a nice channel. :) The fact that your videos have 0 dislikes makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
Leave blue ones on the ground and ID rares to either sell or use. Use Scroll of Wisdoms to ID if you don't already know!
Answer to last comment Rodney Langley, the linked slots means that you can link abilities and support gems in your item and it will be linked. For example. Ice nova and a item can be linked. Provided they have the right slots.

Good video Ziggy. I would really like to see you use some orbs on items to create new/improved items and how that process works. btw, sub'd
I've found that hording scrolls is truly useful. I seem to find tri-color links in the shop for 1x Scroll of Wisdom. Which in turn can be turned around into a Chromatic Orb. Sure, it's slow. You can't argue the logic though =]
I'd say you took the acrobatics keysone passive! It removes all armor and energy shield.
Ctrl+Alt+click on the item with the chat window open.
And yeah, it'll display gem levels.
Fix? It still works if that's what you mean. Tri linked RGB sockets.
Hey Ziggy, could you do a follow up video or maybe just explain what other White items are worth picking up, especially towards end game. ZiggyD Gaming Ahh, I see. Cheers.
ZiggyD you'r videos are the best .
i played poe alot and even i learned something didnt know you can vendor white items with 3 diff color sockets for cromo orb :D
Just start the game today. Thanks for good advice mate
I agree with picking up the scrolls, but beware that sometimes Unidentified items can sell for more than Identified items.
Omg that chromatic orb thing... thanks!
Nice Vid mate :) I would have not wasted so much time if you've made this Vid sooner like few months ago lol :P

Quick question Ziggy do you identify the rares before you sell them?
ZiggyD where are you from? That accent is driving me nuts to figure out.
Anywho thanks for the awesome videos.
So do you keep all those high /itemlevel rings for some purpose later? If so, please elaborate.
Do you find these items in solo play or through grouping on the bulletin board? Whenever I group, my yellow items get looted too fast.
Ziggy! Should I start farming for currency to buy uniques for my lvl 29 Ranger, or should I wait until I complete the game, start another league and farm the weapons myself? Thanks! :D
Try this video I made recently! /watch?v=9dwu4vhZwwU
While there is a market for levelling rares in HC I don't really think it's worth the time so I'd just suggest picking up things you can potentially use.
2021 feeling the nostalgia...
Would you consider this guide still mostly accurate to the current state of the game?
+N Franktopus Yeah this is core game knowledge, and is pretty much always true. There are new things to pick up, sure (like divination cards) but this all remains true.
Thanks.
Man, thinking of all those shitty rings and flasks I ditched makes me wince, now.
Surgeon doestn give alchemy shards anymore!?
Awesome guy. Keep up what you do.
heey, how i can get gears for my build? buying for other players? or all types of gears, like, 5L or 6L drops? where it drops? and where i can buy from others players
Thx :D
***** With the advent of the strongboxes, look to use a Orb of Transmutation on all unenchanted boxes. Finding ones with the +1 extra socket is good to look out for. It helps finding 5L and 6L or just 5s and 6s items. This is how I supplement my farming. Coming across a strongbox is like heaven sometimes.
Just curious - does Ziggy have shadows completely disabled in this video, or were the beta graphics that bad? I played in open beta and I don't remember having a lack of shadows.
That's closed beta, which normally have graphics not done fully but mechanics good mostly, and for a 2012 game that's not even bad for closed beta
Is it worthwhile to pick up gavels for this recipe? As in:
Gavel + 4 blacksmith whethstones + tier 1 map = 1 chisel
Are we gaining or losing currency with this recipe?
+devin uluç he explained in another vid and its gaining currency also you should chance it for a chance of a mholnernjgfasiohfjohfuioh how ever its called
What should do with the rares I pick up, but don't use? Should I sell them to the vendor?
Where is a good place to farm for gems?
I have a few, but I very rarely find them.
Any tips?
Shouldn't it be good to get a set of rares and transform them into a chaos orb?
