My favourite Santorini food is a gyros pita (that's what they call it) from the stand on the north side of the main square of Fira, on the road to Imerovigli. I think they're called Bayiatiko. I've first been there in 1985 and have been going there each time I was in Santorini, and they're still good.

The funny thing is that bayiatico in Greek means, Not fresh…., or stale.

Hi Sebastian, thanks for your videos they are all very interesting !!
Just to let you know :
In greek the word "souvlaki" means "small skewer " (usually of pork or chicken).
Actually, souvlaki and kalamaki are the same thing. The difference comes from the region where in north of Greece we call it souvlaki and in south of Greece we call it kalamaki.
So you order first a pita then what kind of meat you want inside (usually : gyros, souvlaki/kalamaki or bifteki wich is a meatball) and then what kind of dressing (fries, onions, tomatoes) and sauce you want (ketchup, mustard, tzatziki, tirokafteri, rosiki,...)
I hope this helped you, thank you again for your videos :)

This was a good video, but a few things from someone who has been to Santorini 16+ times. 1) I'm not a fan of Lucky's at all. Nick the Grill and Korvounaki are my souvlaki go to. 2) Great call on Family for a classic late night pizza slice. Considering the price and location, they still put out a high quality product that doesn't disappoint and uses good ingredients and that excellent wood fired oven. 3) Santorini has an awesome local cuisine, unlike most of the heavy tourist islands, and it is done best in restaurants. The best ones are quite reasonable in price, like Ouzeri and Mexati Mas. Street food is nice, but don't miss out.

The Culinary Letdown: A Californian Quest for Gourmet in Greece:
When our food-obsessed group, proudly wearing our Californian foodie badges, decided to embark on a culinary journey to Athens, our spirits were as high as the ancient Acropolis. The land that gifted the world democracy surely had a plethora of flavors awaiting us. Instead, we were met with a flavor plateau that left us yearning for more.
The perpetual offering of souvlakis with unapologetically stale bread became a predictable fixture of our Athenian dining experience. The red and green bell peppers dolmas, while vibrant on the plate, echoed a monotonous tone on our palates. We couldn't help but wonder: Where was the fresh baked bread warm from the hearth? Or the comforting embrace of a hot soup or the gentle warmth of a well-brewed tea? Aspects that should have been staples in such a storied land.
Ironically, back in the Golden State, our local Whole Foods flaunts an olive bar that is reminiscent of a mini Mediterranean festival. Yet, in Athens, supermarkets seemed to treat olives with casual indifference, limiting their variety and essence.
Having explored more than 80 establishments across mainland Greece and its islands, our enthusiasm began to wane. We found ourselves booking a hasty weekend retreat to the gastronomic haven of Antalya, Turkey. And what a relief that was! Turkey, with its rich culinary canvas, proved to be a stark contrast. The food was not just food - it was art, it was a story, it was, dare we say, seductive

Whats the difference between souvlaki and kalamaki?

    • @GreeceExplained
      @GreeceExplained  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For Northern Greeks :
      - Souvlaki = meat stick
      - Kalamaki = straw (like a paper straw)
      For Southern Greeks :
      - Souvlaki = wrap with everything inside
      - Kalamaki = meat stick
In Santorini, they use a mix of both. So its better not to use the word "souvlaki" coz you might get sthg else than you wanted.
If you want a meat stick, say kalamaki.
If you want a wrap, say pita.

I'd avoid Lucky's if possible, the person preparing the souvlaki was such a giant POS and served people behind me in the queue first while mocking me. Honestly one of the worst experiences I had in Greece.
