    Paint the foam black, so the camera adjusts its shutter speed to allow less flickering from the screen. And you can also use a dark canopy as an ND filter.

    That's a perfect setup!
    Along with the end filter and black matte finish of the dashboard, I would suggest using a e-paper screen! You'll not get all the colors (you'll find tri-colors versions), but at sunlight it's perfect vision, no glare, and much less power consumption!
    Thanks a lot for making me discovering rcgauges!

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect the guy at RC Gauges looked into that. Not sure there is a version small enough or programmable like this small OLEDs. I'm just a customer of RC Gauges demonstrating what I brought. I rely more on traditional FPV OSD now for my flying. These displays look good from a cosmetic point of view but aren't really good enough to help a pilot when he is flying.

    Since most of these cameras use shutter speed and gain instead of an Iris, perhaps a +9 neutral density filter would slow the shutter down enough to make out the AHRS screen. It's an easy test. Very interesting video! A micro version of what I want in my full-size aircraft!

    This is great Dom. I've been inspired by your projects and have an FPV EDF project underway. Going down the Inav path to get a good OSD integrated into the FPV view, but also means a lot more testing of the flight controller before taking to the skies.

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does but it's a must to be honest. So many advantages to it especially return to home, autopilot etc on top of the normal telemetry. Very important especially to cover the scenarios where you get lost or lose video or control signal. I've got a couple of Matek 765s that I'll be using on future projects. Will do a video on that soon.

    Looks like the instrument panel was a fail, at least in this video. I could never see it. I would think all you need is airspeed and maybe AOA indexer lights. Another thing might be a gauge with a needle that always points out relative bearing back to base. It would need a pitot tube for airspeed sensing and an AOA sensor vane. The bearing back to base could be via GPS. With airspeed and AOA indexer, you will be at the correct airspeed for landing and maybe can fly a stabilized approach.

    I have tried this with a small android phone on board (there are many apps like efis ta) with DJI air system. Visibility of display was better than this, however sunlight was a challenge though (I had to cover the phone at all the edges with some success). The other challenge is the magnetic field that the brushless motor produced which cause erratic motions at the display). I tried some magnetic area covers which are so expensive and heavy. The better solution would be the using pusher motor plane to put more distance between the phone and the motor. Anyway, small andorid phones could be used to get an onboard display in fpv planes (of course even with the ideal conditions and settings the readings would not be so precise for the altitude and speed as it is gps based). Anyway, real time display with digital fpv for sure will make the hobby much more excited and safer…

    What I would do is make a realy, realy long black mat, rectangular hood around this monitor, so no day light can easily reach the monitor. It will be like the way all aircraft cockpits are inside; dark. I see you've made this round black shade, which looks realy good. I would keep that round shade & also install the rectangular hood also, & see what happens.

      Tried various options and none really helped other than using a Caddx ND filter on the DJI camera to force reduction of its shutter speed and flying on a cloudy day. The latency of the data being displayed is quite slow as well. It's not really good enough to help me as a pilot. I now use Matek flight controllers so I get fast accurate telemetry in the OSD in the goggles. Hoping soon that it will be customisable and recordable.

    Exciting setup. Did you ever consider putting the display back in a black box? Think of an unfolding laptop hood for outdoor use. Stoping direct sunlight and leaving only indirect sunlight would improve it. And since the pilot's "eye" is in a known position it should see through the box quite well. I am also wondering if you made a front 1/2 canopy out of curved card stock, perhaps everything inside the painted flat black if you wouldn't be able to see the screen. You'd be shading everything you can't see through anyway and the screen would be the brightest thing in that background.

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Experimented with a hood but the bigger I made it the more it reduced the view. Adding an ND8 filter to the camera helped a lot. This was a later flight with that setup. th-cam.com/video/uaSn3-eYFTU/w-d-xo.html

    • @davethacker8410

      @@EssentialRC In the view, the cockpit totally frames your display. If the hood were carefully shaped to only take up this visual space (not outside the edges of the foam in the view) you'd still have a straight shot at the camera. You had a little hood in the last shot and the screen view though still unusable was much better. I'll go watch your link now. Thank you for the response. Liked your video.

    firstly place non relfective black tape over the white areas nearest the display to reduse sun relfection and light glare... the second pivot to the camera should be redesigned or camera moved forward to reduce pan tilt issues as well as allow it to be mounted inside an encoled cockpit and running two drinking straws as air inlets heated to bend and aimed at the top of the camera controller and a venturi type exhaust port cut onto the foam will provide ample cooling I would love to test this product and help evaluate a Version 2 I can also provide my updated camera mounting STL file so you can print and test out yourself included is also an STL with cooling ducts that can be placed into the foam body to provide cooling to the cockpit area and a venturi type exhaust port that can also be mounted to the body of the fuselage to use vacuum to expel hot air from the internals.
    I've learned as long as your inlets are smaller than your outlets AND/or the outlets are located in an area of lower pressure (most areas of drag or air layer separation) air will be sucked into the inlet and out the exhaust port. Respond and I will send my designs. I wish they had a way or sharing photos in comments lol.

    Hi, is the pan/tilt unit available for sale anywhere?

  • @Duraltia
    @Duraltia 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mhh... The potential _is_ there but man does it _not_ live up to it... I skipped through parts of the video and may have skipped over it but why can't the Screen be set to a lower 60Hz if 90Hz is its upper limit? I imagine the DJI Camera having a 60Hz upper limit with downward adjustability would mean it doing like 15-30-60Hz? If the Screen were to run at a _constant_ 60Hz then even with the Camera switching between modes should have it run at a synchronous multiple of 15Hz whereas with 90Hz it'll only ever run synchronous at 1/3 of the time. I mean... The obvious choice though would be the use of an OLED Screen that doesn't have a TFT like refresh rate.
    Also maybe consider adding a considerably far into the cockpit extending canopy over the screen to create a shadow box around it?
    If done properly it shouldn't impede vision with the camera but _may_ help with visibility... I mean... Cockpits in real fighter jets have them soo... yea? 🤔
    Something else that is bothering me is the location of the Tilt Axis on for the FPV Camera... Why is it so far off the camera housing near the base of the Pan Axis? Wouldn't you want it to be more in line with the housing of the Camera and thus more closely resembling the motion of a _Head_ tilting up and down instead of going full Giraffe lowering not only the Head but _also_ the Neck and all? 🤨

      You're right but it was first attempt. The camera shutter speed is automatic so we forced it to be slower by using an ND filter. I experimented with a hood but it didn't help much when travelling away from the sun on a cloudless day. Regarding the pan/tilt...I didn't design it but it works well enough. I rely more on OSD telemetry in the FPV goggles now. Faster refresh and lower latency. Here's a later attempt with the OLED display. th-cam.com/video/uaSn3-eYFTU/w-d-xo.html

      After a lot of experimentation you can see it's not very good in bright light unless it is shielded very well. I prefer to use OSD telemetry displayed in FPV goggles by a flight controller these days

    How about integrating the display as a head up display instead. That thing is useless. You cannot see anything on the display if it’s too bright.
