@@jonnyhatter35 No, I went to Navy Boot Camp in San Diego. We were next to the Marine Boot Camp. I can't speak Spanish. However I love this song. As I stated it brings back fond memories of those years.
The Sandpipers were an American easy listening trio who carved a niche in 1960s folk rock with their vocals and innovative arrangements of international ballads and pop standards. They were active from 1966 through 1975 and best remembered for their cover version of "Guantanamera." "Guantanamera" Spanish for 'The woman from Guantánamo" is a Cuban song. The official writing credits have been given to Joseíto Fernández, who first popularized the song on radio as early as 1929 "Guantanamera" charted in the United States in September 1966 , and remains the group's biggest hit, earning 1967 Grammy Award nominations for Best Performance by a Vocal Group and Best Contenporary Group Performance, plus gold record awards for the single and the album
I first heard the song on the way to a baseball game with my dad going to see the Dodgers play baseball. I couldn't remember the song but remember the tune and medley.
I was six years old when this song came out. My mom would sing this song while she cooked in the kitchen. I would sing along with her. My mother spoke three languages; one of the three being Spanish. She taught me to sing this song. We sang it together many times. For me, this song will forever be my moms song and when I hear it, I think of her. I love you mom. I miss you.
1966! Remember it well. Almost seems like yesterday, but many decades old. An era of different music, different people, different styles, different values, different country never to return again ever. Glad I lived it like 10's of millions alive then and now.

We only have record of around 900 - 1100 years of music ALL, right through THIS moment, is truly beautiful. And all that you ever hear is already past. The sole experience you EVER have, is in your own mind. If it does not occur NOW, you cannot read this because you are dead.
When hearts sing with such feelings..the beauty of freedom. I wish well for the common folks in Cuba....the same as people all over this confused w0rld~
I remember my father singing that song, slightly different, to my sister and I. Dad was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up near the sea and the villages that created such music.
A guajira is an alternating 6/8 - 3/4 rhythm. and is a Cuban originated rhythm form. I, too, originally heard this song from Cubans before these. While all! Latin American and flamenco speaks to and from the soul, Cuban music is marvelous.
The haunting and beautiful voice of the female in the background is that of 'Robbie Lester' who was not a member of the band. The producer of the song decided to add her voice in a studio separately. Robbie was sought after in the movie industry including Disney for her beautiful singing voice. She passed away in 2004 at the age of 80. This year she would have been 100
I heard this song for the first time while in Boot Camp 1966 in San Diego. It brings back many fond memories of those years.
Thank you for your service.
@@mikef445 Thank you for your kind words.
You a hollywood marine? Semper fi. I went to the island. I'm from Cuba original. This song is like our anthem

I sang this to my elderly stepfather and he automtically sang the chorus back to me. We never connected until then
Sounds so calming for me when i was a child back then...

I recall hearing this song in HS Spanish class in the 80's. The guys sang in French too.
Popular Cuban song, aaahhh

the guy left looks like one from Monty Python, the one right like Benny Hill, the one in the middle like the bass player from The Hollies... 😁
The lead singer was a worship leader at my church a while back. I met him personally.
Love this song

i know its Mexico but cant you string a few words together other the tomato?
I prefer Los Lobo’s version. More traditional
"One ton tomato...I got a one ton tomato..."
I thought it was about an Irish wrestler named "One Ton" O' Mara.
It's a song about a 1 ton tomato.
