Five years later and I have replayed X-Wing Alliance (this time in 1080p) and with no copyright issues. Mission 1 can be seen at th-cam.com/video/u_HqVeTJ5cc/w-d-xo.html
Oh, my! So many memories... I played this game hundreds of times, as well as X-Wing (a really tough one compared to the others) and TIE Fighter...thanks a lot for posting these vids!)))
It's a bit tricky to get working on Windows 10, but once you do it's worth it. Although I do believe that TIE Fighter was the better game still (and possibly LucasArts greatest game).
Unfortunately Squadrons was MP focused and not single player, and the single player it had just felt on rails compared to the freedom of this and TIE Fighter.
Ok here is a fun little Easter egg when you first start flying in this mission you can see the slave 1 on your targeting computer but he jumps away fairly quickly
A really good game. Would have deserved a second and third part or at least an Addon. The only problem I had, was the lacking of speed. It never really had a feeling of speed like you would expect from flying a Star Wars fighter.
These old shooters would be a gold mine for them if they ever decided to remake these as AAA Games. All you need to do is keep everything the same just updated to current tech.
The great thing about XWA and TIE Fighter are their stories still hold up today. The only thing I'd change would be to not use Battle of Endor as the end of the game, but the way you join the Rebellion is perfect.
Look up xwaupgrade, fans have been working to update this game for well over a decade. Unfortunately even before Disney purchased Star Wars game developers were convinced that another xwing sim wouldn't sell, but a fully modded copy of XWA looks like a completely different game when compared to the original, especially with some of the more recent developments.
Now that you say so, I'd love an XWA remake. Would love for them to do what was done with Age of Empires II. Touch up the graphics, rework some missions, add some more batles. I'd pay big bucks for an XWA Definitive Edition.
@@AndyKeunenPlays i think Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 looks dated, harsh Quake 2 graphics and all; definitely something out of the PS1/N64/Pentium 1 era. X-Wing alliace could pass for a 2001-2002 game.
Just remember that the GOG version is playable straight "out of the box", so to say (my recent playthrough of XWA used GOG instead of physical). And for a 20 year old game it was still great fun to jump in again.
There was something truly great about playing videogames in the afternoon with a huge summer storm outside, windows opened; brings back memories of a simpler time.
As with all the old games I play here, I will always prefer the original version over a 'mastered' or 'remake'. To me that's where the charm comes from.
@@AndyKeunenPlays A better AI is always an improvement, woudl increase immersion to get the fighters behaving better. GRaphics are not that important, but in modern huge monitors the low resolution of old looks way worse than in the old monitors.
@@matternicuss No, I havent tried the mod. I've always preferred to play games in their original graphics where possible. I have heard it is quite impressive however.
Not on par with TIE Fighter, and some missed chances to make a really classic game and story (I'd love for there to be more of a conflict of loyalty between the Azzameen family and the Rebellion, kinda like how you had your flight officer and the cloaked guy giving you different orders in TF), but a really fun game.
Currently playing through XWA again at the moment, and another thing that stands out is a lack of Secondary Objectives which to me limits replayability. TIE Fighter was great in that respect because it added another level of attention required to complete both objectives. Having said that, XWA is still a blast to play especially once you join the Rebellion.
Angrydad Gaming : Yeah, I haven't used any mods or enhancements here. Its as original as the game can be nowadays. I prefer playing the old games in their original state.
Andy Keunen same, except for when it just comes to mods that fix glitches. Keep the graphics like the original (unless the mouth animations are like the ones in freaking Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 (they’re great games, but goddamnit those mouth animations were horrendous)) but fix things that aren’t/are suppose to be there
@@foxmcleod64 If a mod enhanced the laser beams to be more vibrant and glow I would consider that, but the models and textures are fine as far as I am concerned. It's aged quite well.
If your just starting this series, highly recommend you find my newer XWA playthrough (2022 I think?). It's in 1080p and just generally better quality.
while it's probably not the best of the lucasarts sims, the story is what really brought this game to another level for me. It upped the stakes seeing the motivations of the main character and not just being another faceless rebel rookie.
If you like this, you'll want to check out TIE Fighter if you haven't already. It's a much older game, but it's aged like fine wine. Such a wonderful story and atmosphere, and wonderful missions.

TIE Fighter is possibly my favourite / most played game growing up. Truly great games. If only they could make a new one on the Frostbite engine...
@@AndyKeunenPlays Unfortunately, there hasn't been a single spacesim release for a very long time((
this game was amazing and fun as i remember

This intro is so beautiful and brings back so many memories from my childhood. Really wish we could get Star Wars games like this again. :(

@@AndyKeunenPlays True but Squadrons VR (PC) put you in Star Wars like never before!

I used to think the same thing, but I think the slower relative speeds allow you to follow and chase better whilst preventing collisions.
Loved it.
Should be re booted for 2021
well XWAUP and XWVM are a thing

I hear you.. keep the maps, music, voice and everything intact.. just use SW Squadrons visuals. Period!

in my opinion, the first "modern" looking SW game (1999)
Definitely one of, but don't forget Jedi Knight and XvT were both released earlier.

I'd pay 500 dollars for an AAA remake of this game.
With a single community fix and minor res tweaks, it is fully playable in 2021. IMO better than any remake could be!

MAKE XWA CANON, DISNEY (obviously never gonna happen since this ties into Shadows of the Empire a little bit but I can dream)
Plus there's the small issue with Lando not flying the Falcon at the Battle of Endor! =)
