  • Angie Martoccio of Rolling Stone moderates the Q&A following the WORLD PREMIERE of LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL at SVA Theater on Sunday, Nov 13, 2022 at the DOC NYC Festival. She is joined by co-directors Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom, and Shawn Colvin.
    "Never heard of American singer-songwriter Judee Sill? Discovered by David Geffen in the early 1970s, Sill combined the electricity (and self-destructiveness) of Janis Joplin, soulful poetry of Leonard Cohen, and a complete lack of public recognition for her innovative, brilliant work before her premature death at the age of 35. LOST ANGEL thrillingly revives Sill’s legacy, as she is posthumously recognized by numerous contemporary artists for her original and compelling visions, and recorded in fresh interpretations by young new artists." - DOC NYC

    Desperate to see this (in the UK).
    I've been in love with Judee's music for 20 years. It's so exciting that this documentary exists to tell her story.

    I would go as far as to say The Kiss on OGWT in 1973 is one of the most powerful and moving performances in history.

    I'm so happy to see this doc is finally out. I can't wait to see it because Andy and Brian, while acknowledging the more sensational aspects of Judee's life, have brought out her spirituality, her capacity for love, her talent, her humor and treated her memory respectfully. Wider distribution PLEASE! Hello from Colorado!

    Deserving of so much more and never fails to move and inspire me. In an ideal world she would be up there and above Joni and the rest of them. She was completely unique and a genius songwriter there's no doubt.

    I just watched the film. I still play her music at home and on the radio since I've been back on the air. We played her albums when new in the 1970s at WHCN in Hartford, a freeform progressive radio bastion which played the full spectrum of creative music out there. I also agree with those who have suggested that she was a person both in and out of her time. The creatrivity level of the '60s and '70s allowed talent like hers to flourish, but I don't think a mass audience was as ready for her as they might be now. Her music is very cerebral as well as spiritual but also visceral, and I think that people are now perhaps more willing to listen to music with religious overtones which don't proselitize; what worked for her worked for her, and she invited us to join her. She was an innate musical genius just waiting to be released, hidden behind her rough and tragic childhood; what emerged still surprises me in wonderful ways. In closing, had she not be thrust into physical agonty again by the car accident and the domestic violence, I wonder if she could have kicked the drugs and emerged with another wave of creative and wonderful music. We'll never know, of course, but I'm grateful to have what we have.

      Does the film do her justice? Is there much archival footage or just a lot of talking heads? Would love to see a dvd release of this. Would love a decent book of her story more than anything though and can't believe that no-one has done one. I mean, what a story!!

    • @countrypaul
      @countrypaul ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sodiumlights, I think the film respects her. There's not a lot of video that she left, but there are a lot of good photos and commentary from people who knew her. I think it is well worth finding; hope you do! After all these years, I am still in love with so much of her music.

      @@countrypaul xo thank you. Paul. I know there is sod all footage of JS, ditto with bootleg audio, so making something unique/definitive was always going to be hard. It stuns me reading that you heard and loved her music when it was released. I was born in '75, only knew her music in 1997...it's her voice that swims forever even when just speaking

      @@kevinskiles2033 - She did die of a suspected drug overdose so “the demons” never went away. She wrote some nice songs with interesting and novel chord sequences derived from her knowledge of hymns but creating a hagiography of her life is to take away ninety percent her interest.
