Best Care Midwest Express

  • An archeological dig.
That's what looking through old video projects feels like sometimes -- like we're unearthing an ancient civilization -- a now unknown way of life.
Is it possible that it was only 16 years ago when we were celebrating the food served on an airline?
Did we actually shoot scenes of nice meals being served, wine being poured and cabin attendants smiling warmly to depict air travel?
When I looked at this week's blog topic -- a 10th anniversary piece we did in 1984 for Midwest Express -- it was hard to believe the onboard scenes.
    But they were accurate.
The shots of the airline's chef preparing food were, in fact, taped in the company's kitchen, not a studio. The comfortable cabin scenes were done on a real plane, not a mock-up. And those cabin attendants -- real people, not actors.
We remember Midwest CEO Tim Hoeksema and his team being as nice to work with, as the airline was to fly.
    We miss them.
But put on your pith helmet and come along on our expedition to a lost culture -- airline service.
Here's a brief clip from the production: "Midwest Express -- The Best Care in the Air -- 10th Anniversary 1984."

I worked ramps, ticket counter and gates in Madison and Milwaukee, 1985-1987...great times, great co-workers, wonderful company. Truly enjoyed working for Mr. Hoeksema and Mr. Biondi. Loved seeing my old roommate, Karly, as one of the flight attendants in the video....and even a glimpse of Ms. Koehler....long love Midwest Express.

Midwest airline was amazing, from the ultra wide leather seats, awesome meals with friendly staff, it was tiers above other domestic carriers. Sadly they are gone now, but will always remember the time flying with them.

OMA is my home airport and I remember Midwest used gates A7 and A8 in Omaha and I miss those chocolate chip cookies and first class seats!!! Now Southwest Airlines is taking over these routes such as MCI to MKE and OMA to DCA etc.

When OMA market opened, I was the face of YX in the commercial welcoming OMA. I'm still very proud to have been a part of the Midwest Express family. (Was based in MKE)❤️❤️✈️

Sorry to tell you but Tim Hoeksema screwed you and Midwest Express which became Midwest Airlines. He should have sold the airline to AirTran instead of to TPG/Northwest Airlines. He walked away with millions when Midwest collapsed and everyone got screwed. The save the cookie campaign was really save the CEO campaign

Jon Z I was a Flight Attendant during the pinnacle of this Airline for USAir and I remember (before all the 911 security ) I would walk on the jet to talk with the ME FA's and tried so hard to get hired with them. I was willing to sacrifice having to live in bad weather just to fly for them. But in the end, like so many other carriers, they folded and now look what we have! It's no longer a pleasure to fly , even in First Class it's horrible

Got on a Midwest Express flight once (LAX to MKE) to have a flight attendant ask me "Would you like a brewski?" I was home already!

I worked for America West in Phoenix in the early 2000's. My parents wanted to go to NYC for their 20th anniversary (pre-9/11) but all of our flights were full, so I used my travel benefits to purchase two round-trip passes for them from Phoenix to New York, connecting in Milwaukee. I believe the passes were $25 each, round-trip; their employees could buy the same passes for themselves and their families on America West (non-revenue travel was always based on a mutual agreement). The loads were light because I planned their trip that way (a non-rev must as travel is always space-available) but they very much enjoyed their experience, despite each trip taking nearly all day once the connection and layover was factored in. They went on and on about how much they enjoyed the service and I was very grateful to YX for taking care of them. As our company transitioned to US Airways and later American Airlines, I was very sad to see their acquisition by Republic, the whittling away of their service standards, and their eventual demise. For employees who worked so hard and took such pride in their work, they absolutely deserved better. There will never be another like them and it's a damn shame.

Hey Travis - I too worked at America West ‘89-94 DCA SBA LAS and DCA again. We had a station agreement with YX at DCA - it got to be a running joke that any time one of us would non-rev space available we always chose YX over our own flights even if ours were wide open. I mean there was no comparison in terms of service, even despite our having A/V on the Airbus. YX on ancient -9s was still a better product. Of course if we were traveling PS that’s a different story. But for SA we always took YX which used the gate directly across from us. In those days there were no exceptions to the perimeter rule so flying YX via MKE was only a tiny bit slower than HP through OMA. But the difference was like night and day. I miss them - really great people.

As someone that worked for Piedmont in CLT, you can tell they were the equivalent type of airline like we were. They were loved in the Midwest like we were in the South. It’s sad to see airlines that had wonderful personalities just chipped away into the mega carriers we have today with not so much personalities 😢

They're officially back! However, they are easing back into things with only a few Midwest cities currently being serviced. The fares aren't *at all* cheap, but people will fork it over when comparing what shit show current domestic air travel has become. The wide leather seats, the warm chocolate chip cookies, the actual *FOOD*, it's all back, baby!

The good old days.... I was flying for the then USAir. We are lucky we got to enjoy flying the way it was meant before it was all tossed out the window. We use to serve full hot meals in economy including ice cream and hot towels before landing in economy ! between Philadelphia and Dallas... Our first class was unsurpassed in the United States at the time that we had acquired from Piedmont Airlines when we merged with them....yes sir we loved our jobs and flying back then...now it’s hell to fly and the only way it’s bearable is if you get a first class seat. It’s the only way I will fly now...
