I truly believe the Otis and Ruby relationship scared the writers. They clearly didn’t see anything long term with it but we’re surprised that a large portion of the fanbase enjoyed this relationship more than Otis and Maeve. These two deserved a writing team that wasn’t scared of them

I genuinely don't understand how people could prefer him with Maeve! Ruby and Otis have way more chemistry and its a better story. Maeve got annoying after season 2. Team Ruby all the way.

The criminal thing about the show and the last season is that this beautiful story is about a sweet, beautiful girl with a tough exterior who softened for Otis and showed such vulnerability towards him, that they sort of tossed it out. What a shame. I loved the scene at home when he crashed there and she remained vulnerable. End stunk!
Similarly, Otis felt confident when he was with Ruby, always standing up for himself and never being afraid to say how he felt in their relationship. He never did that with Maeve (and he was also a selfish prick when he was with her). I think Ruby and Otis brought out the best in each other and it’s a shame the writers didn’t place all their bets on them because they could’ve been great :’) Just seeing the way Ruby calmed him down when he was panicking over the campaign video proves how healthy and good this relationship is compared to the other one.
Really was hoping to see Ruby n Otis end up together. They were great together.
Lets hope for a spin off for these two😌
The tragic part is how Otis might've actually developed real feelings for Ruby, if he didn't let his guard up and was willing to let himself feel something meaningful towards her.
EDIT: I think in Season 4, he did in fact develop feelings for Ruby especially after they spent the night together. But he still wanted to focus on working it out with his first love; Maeve, plus the fact that he was starting to feel something towards Ruby scared him.

The chemistry between ruby and Otis felt effortless. Maave and Otis felt forced couple. Even though there was no rotis kiss it still felt good to watch them together. Maave and Otis were together but it just felt artificial!
Maeve and Otis never really worked because I feel like Maeve had been through such trauma, it made her closed off and afraid to be vulnerable. In addition, the chemistry Maeve and Otis had was always awkward, it never seemed right. They had feeling for each other, but expressing them was always difficult. With ruby and Otis it felt much easier, more natural. Ruby was willing to be vulnerable, she had been through trauma as we see in season 3 and 4 we get more on her background. With Maeve it just seemed like there was always something blocking her and Otis from being together fully. Isaac, issues with her mum, the timeline when Otis was with ola and said she liked him, I don’t think it was ever meant to be. Even though they each had feelings for each other, it wasn’t meant to be
Funny I started watching for otis and mave. Then ruby came into the picture and it was obviously better chemistry between the actors

Maeve is such annoying biXch . How they portrait her she just want someone that give her comfort from her heavy personal problems .
I mean she deserve happiness too she is made in a way that you will have pity for her but cmon Ruby is much better.

Just a defensive barrier for other people . the nicest thing is that she embrace completely the relationship with Otis at the end and she is not confused about at all by it .

@@rob4461 Otis and Maeve worked, the show just decided to throw in obstacles all the time. I mean Otis and Ruby spent a day together bowling, going to her house just fine etc but when Otis and Maeve went out together as a couple for the first time Otis' aunt came and ruined things. Same thing when Otis slept with Ruby his childhood trauma had gone, but it conveniently comes back when he was about to sleep with Maeve 🤦 Season 4 should have been Otis and Maeve together as a couple so we can truly see how they are together and to see if it lasts til the end, but the writers couldnt even do that, instead Maeve returns home mid season and she is upset because her mother died.
Story with Ruby was much shorter than with Maeve and yet so much better. He totally changed her, she became kind and nice, introduced him to her father, shown him her vulnerability and then they totally trashed the story. It was so sad. I was very happy that she was back in S4 and hoped that something might happen and yet again they destroyed her just like S3. She carried the S4 and in my opinion, their relationship carried the whole series. It could have ended so much better…😢
Otis and Ruby should have been the ending couple, in my opinion. It's a shame that Otis ended up single, hopefully they'll eventually reconnect somewhere down the line.

Apart of me truly believes the writers kept Otis single at the end to show how jumping into a relationship with ruby would have been negative for his mental health from not actually getting over maeve properly so I hope Ruby saying that in the last scene is a hint to show that one day they will be ready to make/have a better relationship between them I hope anyhow lol I really wanna see them work in out together haha

the writers managed to change the status quo and get a large portion of the fanbase to prefer the 'second' girl and handled their dynamic so well most of the time, its a shame they ended things this way

Ruby was a lot better at communicating and addressing problems in a way that matched with Otis flaws

@@random_meta I was just about to bring up something similar. If Otis was bothered by something, he was able to confront her about it and Ruby listened. Otis was never able to do this with Maeve, and even when he did they never properly settle their issues.

if she didn't boss him around, he wouldn't have had the balls to stand up for himself. I think if he didn't stand up to her, she wouldn;t have fallen in love with him because he wouldn't have been himself. Both Maeve and Ruby bossed him around, Ruby was just more blunt about it, which is why he HAD to push back. How do they manage to always make me root for the "2nd" girl? She's a total Queen B and I love her. Her character is fascinating, she's tough, she's so so caring and loving, beautiful and just ICONIC. I hope this character will stay relevant for many years to come. Mimi did a great job, although I think there's also so much of her in Ruby.

Can't we get a petition to get the producers to do a follow up. An episode where the view of the characters after 2-3 years is shown and you see how Ruby and Otis are in a relationship. The well deserved happy end for the series.

So the show ends with Maeve leaving Otis for a second time to go to America, and now both Otis and Ruby are heart broken all over again. It felt like a strange repeat of season 3's emotional arc.
But this time Maeve left Otis forever like she wrote a letter like thanks for everything and she won't return to Otis anyday

But after the previous three seasons of teasing the audience with Otis and Maeve getting together, it felt quite unsatisfying to me that the show should end without the two of them having a real chance to explore their relationship.

I think it has to do with most of the actors leaving and even the Maeve's actor who didn't want to return, so they had to wrap things up quickly and make this the last season.

I think it does feel awkward but somehow I can see it as a choice from the show - just like in life, not everything can be perfectly resolved, and you don't always get closure, but you can still find a way to move on. It might be the show's way of adressing this, as it's all about psychology.

I am for one more episode (as a special episode) with a happy ending. It was hard to see Otis and Ruby‘s friendship ended like this and they deserve much better.

Ruby and Otis were the best ship in this whole series. The end of the series is still just the beginning of their adult lives, and I feel they will find their way back together.
Once he's ready to move on (now that he and Maeve are officially over), Otis can start winning back Ruby's trust, friendship, and love. She threw down the gauntlet in their last scene and let him know she wasn't going to wait around pining as his friend or settle for being his fallback girl after a glib apology. With Otis' little smile, it feels like he got the message and will take up the challenge when he's ready. It's probably about the best we could have hoped for with these writers.
He and Ruby had way more of a dating relationship in the series than he had with Maeve. Ruby and Otis had fun together, went on dates, communicated openly about personal things, were highly sexually compatible, and were together when they were together. They actually were bringing out the best in each other when they were dating-she loosened him up from all his inhibitions while he broke down her walls.
It's quite different from how Erik describes Otis always ignoring everyone else to chase Maeve. That repeatedly led to tension and isolation from others. It feels like (with all the near misses and never getting to have stable relationship time together) his connection with Maeve was more infatuation and idealizing someone. Kinda like she was his Emo Pixie Dream Girl.
Otis and Maeve spent season after season playing games. They got held back by poor communication, choosing other people repeatedly, and by pretending that they were fine with being just friends.
With one sentence Ruby just said that she isn't going to participate in playing that game.
I believe the writers were scared about the chemistry of this ship. I still remember in university the class to write where the professor a veteran fantasy writer said, "Don't write a word of your saga if you don't know what is going to happen, how it's going to happen, and why, but never be afraid of change things if the characters grow in a new direction in a way that becomes so natural, even if you did not think it before ."
Their chemistry is off the charts.
I didn't know how much I hated Otis and Mauves relationship until Otis and Ruby together. It was so cool seeing Ruby's defensive walls gradually come down. When she confessed and Idiot Otis didn't say it back, I rolled my eyes so much it hurt. Haha!

The fact that Otis never had issues with Ruby with their physical relationship is telling. Otis had problems with Ola, the weird alien girl and of course Maeve.
That's becuase Ruby was experienced and didn't think it was a big deal
The whole last season they had subtle hints of them ending up together like the sleep over and the comment from O about her waiting for him to realize he wanted her all along. Then the bus drives off the cliff....
I think Ruby deserves a spin off series the characters great and the actress is brilliant.
I love how Ruby turns to be one of my fav characters in this series. She wore a mask to avoid pain, but truly has a good heart.
This edit was better than the first three seasons. Otis and Ruby will go down as the most epic love story that never was.
Here's what i think about season 4 : The writers knew how much we hate Otis and Maeve so they didn't dare to make them the endgame but since they were their main couple from the start they wanted to force our mind that their love was so true but the funny thing is from their own writing we all know Maeve didn't care about Otis at all she didn't come back for him and i don't hate her for that she is allowed to follow her dreams but she lied about it and said Otis was the reason i hate her for that we clearly saw she came back because she was rejected there and then even when the writers was always trying to force Otis and Maeve i clearly felt Otis's love for ruby when they were trying to make the video for example when he was freaking out he was so relaxed when Ruby talked to him for a second and he really wanted to spend the night with him and i feel like he brought up Ruby before sleeping with Maeve because he wanted to be with her instead there was no reason for bringing it up exactly in that moment if it didn't mean anything so when he said to her that it didn't mean anything he lied to so their relationship was the most toxic relationship i have ever seen with absolutely no chemistry so it wasn't true love at all!!
I just wish the writers cared a little about their viewers and made the amazing Otis and Ruby the endgame properly

You guys do not understand how upset I was when these two did not get a good ending. Ruby's character development when she got with Otis was one of the best things ever. Especially when she talked about her dad and she said "I love you" first. But whatever, I'm my world, they ended up together.
I was always rooting for him to stay with his maeve, but the writers always had that "will he or won't he" joke between the two of them that got tiring. Then Ruby showed up and stayed with Otis and I simply loved her. They were supposed to end up together.
I'm in the same boat. I was willing to give Otis & Maeve another shot going into the last season, but then the writers continued to show (intended or not) that Ruby was a better match for Otis!

I didn't even expect these two to get together when I started the show but I really liked their relationship and how Ruby changed and became an amazing person. Season 4 was kind of a let down for me but I really wanted Ruby and Otis to end up together, don't know why the writers decided to end it as such a note. I am not satisfied with the ending at all
These show writers obviously wrote for their own narratives and agenda and not fan wishes. If they really wanted to close this show out uniquely and brilliantly, they would have made three endings. One with the original which everyone saw, one with Otis and Maeve riding off into the sunset and the final with Otis and Ruby giving it another go and people could watch whichever suited them. Everyone would be happy yet now many people are unfulfilled.
That's a good idea, since Netflix make's interactive movies and shows all the time. The issue we'd run into though is that fans would then probably argue about which ending is the cannon ending.

The writers dropped the ball so incredibly hard with Otis and Ruby, they were the only couple that genuinely felt perfect, the relationships had rocky roads and cheating but theirs was perfect.

So disappointed at the ending they gave to ruby and otis’ relationship. Honestly, they are so much better than him with Maeve.

I just kind of feel like he and Ruby weren't that complicated. With Meave and Otis it was always something she leaving he having a girlfriend. They kiss but it was desperate kiss. They weren't truly together. They were balancing. With Ruby there was not cavorting
but he doesn't love her tho that's the difference with Maeve he love Maeve since the day he met her Ruby was more about sex she was his first time and he cared about her but there's nothing more

season 4 for me was just badly made at a point they hung out and end up cuddling, but then they turn otis into a manipulative guy and end up hurting and using her. while i think they were the perfect fit cause he was confident around her, she didnt play games and always showed him how that she wanted him just a simple and true instant connection. they should have been the endgame couple. can't believe i waited 2.5 years to be dissapointed
I bet many people want to see another one final series with Otis & Ruby getting back together.
this season felt like there is no main characters and we were all only interested in what they will do with Ruby.
They deserved much better,especially cause of what we've seen in season 3,there was so much story to tell in this season,i didnt like the producers made us watch the way otis treat ruby knowing that she was in love with him,not a worth it ending for a final season

I have to say even though I am a Maeve and Otis stan till the end. I really did think that Otis unnecessarily led Ruby on in the final season which wasn’t fair on her bless her she’s iconic!

If you really think about it. Ruby actually has a higher chance of getting back with Otis after the ending than Maeve. Maeve gives closure to otis but Ruby denies Otis friendship. Ruby did not reject Otis, she sounds more like "I have enough friendship, try other status". Ruby really knows what she wants.❤❤😂😂
I really like Otis but he doesn’t deserve Ruby after all. The character development of Ruby and Adam in the final season was just amazing.❤

What I hate about this show was that Meave never seemed to respect Otis and saw him as the nerd she was too good for (3/4 of of the first season at least) and Ruby straight up respected him way more even though she saw him as a hookup partner at first. Meave hooked up with that athlete and did a bunch of stuff to hurt Otis while Ruby genuinely was just so much better for otis.
Ruby and Otis are the only real couple in this relationship: IDK why it is so common that we go for things that are bad for us or that hurt us instead of just choosing to go for things that are right and genuine for us. I think that Otis likes Maeve because she brought him out of the bubble he was in when starting out but Ruby made him more comfortable with himself and confident in himself. He is gonna miss out on a keeper by being with Meave.
Edit: Otis needs to get with Ruby and move forward because Maeve always played with him, his feelings and his time/attention/energy. Ruby kinda was down from the start and the actual gem that he needs.
I really hope as time goes by and people take the time to reevaluate the show, that more people will recognize why people started feeling more appealed towards Otis & Ruby and why people started to understand that Otis & Maeve were toxic and unhealthy for each other cause you're pretty much right about Maeve.
I feel like Otis & Maeve were more in love with the idea of each other, rather than who they were as people. They both helped each other in recognizing their value in one another. Like you said, Maeve helped Otis step out of his bubble, while Otis helped Maeve with appreciating her own worth. Beyond that, Maeve always expected so much from Otis that she wasn't willing to give back to him and lacked the emotional stability to deal with conflict they had together. Otis & Ruby had what he lacked with Maeve, which was compatibility!
