Cervix dilation symptoms - What does cervical dilation feel like and how to tell if you are dilated

  • Do you want to find out if and how much you are dilated without a vaginal exam? In this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy and Birth Consultant, and Mathias Ritter, Science Expert, present various ways to find out how it feels like when you are dilated, how to tell if you are dilated and also how much you are dilated. First of all, they present the four most important cervix dilation symptoms, to help you understand how it looks and feels like when your cervix is dilating. Afterwards, they explain two methods in order to help you tell yourself if you are dilated. In fact, these two methods can even give you a rough idea about how much you are dilated. They are called “the Purple Line” and “the Fundus Theory”. While the first approach is based on scientific research (sources see below), the second approach is not scientific at all. However, it is used by many midwives and doulas to help a woman find out if she is dilating and also, how much she is dilated.

    Thanks so much for watching this video! 😊 Please keep in mind: the most reliable way to tell if and how much you have dilated is always to have a midwife check your cervix. However, we know that this is not always an option (and certainly not the most pleasant experience). So, we hope that our video will help you at least get a ROUGH idea about if and how much you are dilated!

      Question. Will the dilated cervix always be a circle? My doctor said I was 3cm dilated.
      I came home & checked myself & what I found was NOT a perfect circle but more like a flattened oval. Is that normal? So confused.😵‍💫

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ashjankins960 Hi there Ash! 😊
      The cervix may not be perfectly round, but it IS round. However, the problem is that when you check the cervix yourself, the position that you adopt to do so can change the shape of your cervix. Therefore, it may appear oval shaped from your point of view, when in fact, it is round 😊
      We hope this helps!

      actually, not many women know about this! In fact, we have met women who even tried to rub it off! 😅
      But it is a natural phenomenon that some women experience, although we very much doubt that 70% have it (as they found in the study). At least, that's not what we observe...

    Should mention that for non-white women, the “purple line” may be white or gray. The color that shows up depends on your skin tone. Thanks for the great content overall!

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there 😊,
      yes, you are absolutely right! We should have mentioned that in our video!
      Actually, in women with dark skin, the line often appears in a greyish or dark brownish color (similar to la linea nigra that can develop on the stomach when you are pregnant).
      That said, personally, we don't believe that 75% of women develop a "purple" line. In our experience, it is considerably less, particularly in women with dark skin (but this is just an observation).

    With my first baby I would feel awful awful pain down there with every contraction. Literally, the only way I could describe it was I felt like my cervix was being pulled open. I called the nurse in and she said “well, you’re definitely fully dilated!” I don’t remember feeling that as much with my second, but I had an epidural so that’s probably the reason.

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there Heather 😊,
      thanks a lot for sharing your story with us!! Actually, there are many women who describe their experience exactly as you just did: as if their cervix was pulled open.
      And yes, in your second pregnancy, it was probably the effect of the epidural. However, it is also worth noting that in second pregnancies, things often feel and behave differently compared to first deliveries... So, the fact that it was your second delivery could have been a reason too that things felt differently...
      Again, thanks a lot for sharing! 😊

    You guys are so amazing thank you so much for this video. It brought me so much comfort as I am 38 weeks and 2 days, and I’ve been hurt badly by American doctors, that being said I have had very few prenatal appointments (I’ve had an amazing pregnancy so far) and this gives me confidence and peace knowing I can check at home and be informed. Hello Brittany! ❤️
      We can totally imagine!! At some point, you just want that baby out (and hold that sweet little thing in your arms)! However, please note that only because you may dilate very slowly initially, does not mean that your entire dilation will progress at such a slow speed. It can suddenly go very quickly! So better have that hospital bag prepared 😊

      Many women believe that we are crazy when we talk about the purple line😅. So, it's always good to have some confirmation!
      Don't worry too much about the length of the line though! We are still waiting for the results of another scientific study which will hopefully tell us more about the relationship between the length of the line and dilation progress...

    Hi guys, I wanted to jump on here to say a huge thank you. I watched your video (4 Aug '24) on the day I went into spontaneous labour at home. I knew I was having contractions, but they were still pretty mild at that point. When you mentioned the purple line, I grabbed a mirror and ran to the bathroom. And sure enough, there it was - a purple streak running from my bum to my coccyx, measuring 3cm! I couldn’t believe it. My partner and I headed to the birth centre, and the midwife confirmed I was 3cm dilated. She was really impressed and asked how I knew. A cool bit of knowledge that I’ll definitely share with the girls in my pregnancy yoga group. I’ll be recommending your TH-cam channel too!

      Hi there! 😊
      Thanks so much for your feedback! We are very happy that you find our video helpful! 😊
      Please keep in mind that you can only use the fundus line to estimate your dilation, when you have a contraction. In other words, you would place your hand right below your bra line at the beginning of a contraction and check how many fingers you can fit...
      We hope this helps! 😊

      Can you advise on one more thing? My purple line is 9.6cm! But I have almost no labour symptoms (very occasional contractions). Do you think it's a coincidence in my case or would there be some dilation?
      So glad I found your channel! 💫

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@s.a.w5493 Hi there! 😊
      Here the problem: scientific research on the purple line is really at the beginning. We need much more research on it!
      But normally, when a woman has a purple line, we can see that she is dilated. The only question is: how much? Scientists have found that there is a medium positive correlation between the cervical dilation and the purple line which means that there is a "trend" that the longer the line is, the more she is dilated. Because of that, some midwives have proposed to use the purple line instead of cervical exams to track labor progress (at least to some extend).
      However, as always in pregnancy, there may be women who this does not apply to. So it could be that you are hardly dilated at all but still see a purple line! Pregnancies are so diverse! 🙈
      We hope this information helps you at least a bit!! ❤️
      All the best for you and your baby!! ❤️

    OMG... today I am 35 weeks pregnant today but last night I freaked out a bit since I noticed the purple line about 5 cm long 😱, still can’t feel my cervix , I tried so I guess is not the time yet , it's my 1st pregnancy at almost 44 yo and I am a little afraid but super excited to meet my baby girl Sofia soon 🥰. I really wish there would be a way to tell when I will get into labour 🙄
    Love your channel .

      Hi there 😊,
      We really wished there would be a way to find out when exactly women go into labor! 😊 It would make things so much easier!
      Unfortunately, it's only guesswork. Same applies to the purple line - unfortunately, it can be very inaccurate in some women. So eventually, only a vaginal exam can tell you for sure.
      But please don't be too worried about your dilation! We know, most women are. But your body knows exactly what it is doing. So the best thing to do is to relax during those final weeks of your pregnancy and to let your body do the job (although it's never wrong to support him with that - f.e. with our labor preparation tools) 😊
      We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    I am happy I stumbled across your video. At 35+5 I was checked by my midwife and was 2 cm & 50% -2.
    Today I'm 36+3, have been having a lot of irregular contractions. This will allow me to check and see if I'm progressing.
    I'll get checked again this Friday (in 2 days) and see if I'm accurate 😀
    Thank you!

      Hi there Ashleigh 😊,
      thanks SO MUCH for your lovely comment! ❤️ We are super happy if you find our video helpful! 😊
      Please just keep in mind that the correlation between the length of the purple line and your dilation is only medium positive. Therefore, there is a lot of variability which means that for some women, this method may not be very accurate. We are eagerly waiting for the results of another study in the hopes to be able to post a table containing more accurate predictions based on the length of the purple line...
      We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    My wife is already 39w with our 2nd baby. We are worried bcoz she doesn't feel any contraction or cramps at all. Her due is nearing (Dec 29, 2021). We wish for her safe and normal delivery just like our first baby.

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there 😊,
      please don't worry too much about it! On average, a pregnancy lasts between 38 and 42 weeks. Everything within that range is considered "normal".
      That said, there ARE things which have helped other women in similar situations:
      1. Nipple stimulation (just keep in mind that it may not be done with a few minutes per day)
      2. Reflexology (same as nipple stimulation: it may not be done with a few minutes per day only)
      3. Acupuncture (acupuncture itself cannot induce labor; however, it can help in cases when a woman cannot go into labor because of high stress levels because acupuncture can really bring your stress levels down. So if your wife is really stressed, acupuncture could help)
      4. Exercises on a birthing ball
      Of course, there is also Castor oil. However, personally, we always treat Castor oil as last resort simply because of the side effects. Also, you can never be sure if it is going to work... Still, it CAN be super effective for labor induction. Just discuss with your doctor first, if Castor oil is the right tool in your particular case...
      We talk more about these tools and also how to apply them in these 2 videos: th-cam.com/video/8rehbupwhzY/w-d-xo.html (reflexology, nipple stimulation, Castor oil)
      th-cam.com/video/UgrbOc4cebY/w-d-xo.html (birth ball exercises)
      Finally, keep in mind that things can sometimes go really fast. A woman may not see any signs of labor whatsoever. And then a moment later, she is in labor and a few hours later her baby is born (we have seen many such cases). This happens particularly often in second pregnancies because the body has done this once already...
      So, again, please don't be worried too much!
      We hope this helps! 😊
      We wish you ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you, your wife and your baby!! 😊

  • @JaimeeNelson

    I can't understand the purple line. Is the butt crack showing a line? I have 5 kids and 1 on the way. I've studied 3 midwives books and read about 6 different pregnancy books over the course of all of my 5 years of pregnancies. I feel like everything I've learned is being tested with this purple line. I am not computing can someone type it out for me so that I can't stop feeling like I'm missing something? Please? Maybe if I watch it 5-9 more times.

    • @JaimeeNelson
      @JaimeeNelson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So it is a visible line? Where?

    • @JaimeeNelson
      @JaimeeNelson 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ahh... I get it now so I can't see it on myself but I can have someone else look into my butt crack and tell me how dilated I am by the length of the discolored line from my butt hole to the top of the butt crack... approximately 10cm away from the hole.
      I got it! I answered my own question.
      It was overwhelming my brain with the new information processing.

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      😁😁
      We love your comment!
      Please keep in mind though that there is only a medium positive correlation between the length of the purple line and dilation and the standard deviation is quite high.
      This means that for some women, this method will not be accurate at all!
      Thank you!
      We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

    Thank you for the information! I'm 40 weeks today and have been having cramps and contractions for more than a week at this point. At my last check-up four days ago I didn't dilate any further though. It's been at 1 cm since the visit before that one. I don't have any of the other signs, as far as I can tell. I wish my contractions would actually lead somewhere. Being pregnant has been a pain and I'm ready to meet my baby.

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi there ❤️
      We are very very sorry to hear what you are going through! Unfortunately, such prolonged "phases of pre-labor" do happen to SOME women and they are extremely unfair because they are really discouraging. Plus, they drain lots of energy. 😬😬
      Pre-labor means that you are having contractions, but they don't dilate your cervix. However, pre-labor contractions NORMALLY improve when you take a warm bath (20min). So maybe, this could help you with the pain?
      And then once you see that your contractions progress (i.e. they come closer together, become stronger and more frequently), you are gradually progressing into the early stage of labor which NORMALLY means that your cervix dilates.
      One thing that has helped many women at the clinic to progress is nipple stimulation. However, the problem is that at this point, your stress levels are probably through the roof, because a week of contractions is not a nice thing to experience. Because of that it could make sense to have an acupuncture treatment for relaxation too (at least, this is what we would do at the clinic). Also acupuncture COULD help induce true labor. So, those are really the 2 things that we often see work for other women in similar situations.
      Maybe, they will help you too?
      We wish you GOOD LUCK and ALL THE BEST for the upcoming birth, for you and your baby! We are sending you lots of positive thoughts in the hopes that you can soon go into labor! ❤️❤️

      Hi there 😘,
      we are not gonna lie to you: it is difficult to turn a baby at 39 weeks. The only exercises that we know that have managed to do this in the past are these: th-cam.com/video/e-kh6nxGkCk/w-d-xo.html
      However, these work best between week 34 and week 36, at least in our experience. So, there is absolutely no guarantee that they help.
      We also ask you to get the approval of your doctor first that it is okay to do those exercises - given your pregnancy case so far. Thank you!
