MANNHEIM MURDER: Moving moments - Germany mourns the killed police officer
A single stroke of the bell commemorated a police officer who was fatally injured in a knife attack in Mannheim on Friday at 11:34 a.m. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier remembered the slain police officer Rouven L. with a minute's silence and the laying of flowers. The memorial event on Mannheim's market square was also attended by the parents and siblings of the deceased, the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg Winfried Kretschmann, the President of the State Parliament Muhterem Aras, the Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (all Greens) and the State Minister of the Interior Thomas Strobl (CDU).
Last Friday, at the same time and at the same place, a 25-year-old Afghan who has been living in Germany for ten years attacked several people with a knife at the stand of the anti-Islam citizens' movement "Pax Europa". The 29-year-old police officer who tried to intervene suffered several stab wounds to the head and died on Sunday from the injuries inflicted on him. The attacker was stopped by another police officer with a pistol shot.
