    Suggestion to avoid close TCs: if it's possible, give the 3 villagers bigger line of sight until they start to build the TC

      I think that's the first suggestion on the matter that I would actually consider an improvement. Is that somethin that can be done with mods? Although I bet there would be people complaining about Chinese or Rus players finding their starting TC too easily to harrass with a Barbican or Kremlin

    I would give a scout at the beginning to every player to solve the "too close TCs" issue.
    And for the king's max population increase I would cap it at +100 extra population, that way every king kill still gives a big boost, but killing several doesn't snowball too hard.
    Really loving this mode even though I never liked FFA ❤

    Can't wait. This is my first time seeing a tournament series as it happens as only just find this channel. Can't wait for the games. Apart from the starcraft players these are all new. So cool seeing new players from this octagon series and seeing what ones i like

    I get that Beasty was in bad spot, but quitting that early and forcing everyone else to deal with it is kind of unsportsmanlike. Especially when he is in a tournament with money on the line, sometimes an early kill can make a ton of difference for the other players.

      i think this is a totally reasonable argument, but i disagree. the situation he spawned into is a complete joke / meme, and there is literally no interesting gameplay that can result from his situation. on some level, the rules should be such that high level players (/ players in general-- i think beasty's concerns are generalizable to all players, but let's be real: we all care about top-line players playing more than most other players) actually *want* to play out the game, ie it's actually worth their time, and the current ruleset did not accomplish that. (i'm posting this late enough that i know that the rules have changed, and i think the rule changes-- e.g. spawning with a scout-- are very positive). yes, you can take my line of reasoning to the point where someone is being a prima donna asshole, but i just don't see how beasty can even *honestly* play the game without arbitrarily picking one of his 11 neighbors to randomly get first blood (and probably 3 points, since they won't have hit castle), which is actually enough of a point swing to genuinely affect the tournament. i am a fan of beasty, but by no means am i some sort of beasty dickrider, and i would not, in general, endorse this sort of "protest" action, but in this *specific* case i think it is actually fairly justified, and, honestly, him quitting before giving 3 points randomly to a neighbor was legit the best option. I am glad that drongo has already acted to fix these issues, and were he to do the same in the same situation under the new rules, i would not endorse the same course of action. mind you, beasty is the one who has to live with the repercussions of insta ff-ing the game regardless (ie getting 0 points), which is "punishment" enough. remaking the game was out of the question; how things played out seems to me to be the most equitable outcome possible.

    I think a no surrender rule could be good for the tournament. Even micro details like losing a small portion of your army to finish off an enemies base and kill their king can change the result in a future fight. Since you are rewarded for killing the king it ruins it when someone hits the ragequit button.

      Definitely negatively impacts the game when people surrender in this game mode. That shouldn't be allowed. It sucks to get sandwiched, but just play it out. Be a good sport.

      He alt+f4ed. I think they don't have the surrender option. Simply ban such players from all other games and tournaments. I don't give a shit who the player is, it ruins the experience for the viewers who are the main reason these professional players have money outta game.
      Also, it sets an example for the community and reflects what idiots we allow among us. In general, gaming communities should grow up and start ignoring kids with attitude, collectively push them away or humble their asses. It works charms in any other industry, dunno why it remains in pro gaming full of adults.

      ​@@Matticusjkliterally couldnt play and had had 2-3 denying his expanion and had striker/crackedy/ running around after they realized he was trapped. There was no ruined experience for amy viewers except beastys who didny get to watch who they were there for. It was very unprofessional of what that dumbass purple did to Beasty.

    Easy way to improve the spawns.
    Let all the vills spawn in the middle, basically next to each other. They won't fight each other because of the treaty time and they can fan out and pick where they want to build.

    Im curious what the admins ruled on beasty leaving. The rules say that a king kill is no longer worth points only in case of a desync, which didnt happen here. but then again feels unfair for everyone else to give crackedy points for beasty having a cosmically bad spawn. on the other side the Fs in FFA dont stand for fair

    Honestly, I think ppl saying beasty could have come back from this are wrong. Yeah he is not tied to the landmarks and could go to the middle, but his opponents are no silver players. With that much of a disadvantage I can't see any player coming back in his situation tbh.

    I think that the flat increase to pop just becomes too strong, unless you allow alliances against a player who has gotten three or more kills. Another option is to change the pop increase from 50/50/50/50 to 50/25/10/10/10. Makes it so that getting kills is still an advantage, but you don't end up with 2x the pop after four kills.

      I think 25 pop per king instead is better and more likely to be possible through modding.

      I felt the same way, but on the flip side players don’t actually benefit from the increased population until late game and it can be risky going to kills early.
      There has to be a fairly big incentive for sacrificing early game for a late game buff.

    Great video however i think we need some rule improvements to make the games abit more fair for everyone:
    1. Decrease the Population advantage to 20 as 50 just creates run aways especially if you spawn in next to 2 others and quickly roll them.
    2. Ban quitting, you must play out the game until your king is dead and if you do surrender early you lose points as it really takes away the fun of the game and can cause confusion about who gets points etc.
    3. to fix the spawn issue give each player a scout and give them 1 - 2mins before a TC can be placed down to scout the area (or just tell them a TC cant be placed until the 1 - 2 min mark)
    Other than that the new rules are sweet!

    The lack of placing/position in the game makes it impossible for a player to do anything once behind. Ie even if the king survives, and you somehow manage to die later, there is no point. As simply you won't be able to kill anyone else.

      I've seen a couple of comments like this during the games as well and I've been wondering how one would go about doing that. Or rather, what is there to be fixed? Players know what the maps look like in general: Tasmania with water on the edges and lots of resources in the center; Uluru with most resources in the corners and relics distributed along the edge of the map while the center is totally devoid of resources; how many trade posts and sacred sites there are, and where approximately they'll be located. They spawn in with three villagers in three different loations. They then pick their TC spots themselves. Sure - that's not something you want to wait too long to do (except for GUA maybe...), and of course you at that point just don't know where the other players are, but we're not going to change that now, are we? We don't see the first 1:40 minutes of the game, which is a bit of a shame, but at that point Beasty and Simtom seem to have gathered all their starting villagers in one spot, as far as I can tell from the mini map. That might mean that they had their villagers spawn a bit closer together, which in turn might limit their choices for TC spots, but I would consider the ability to bring all your starting villagers together faster than other players an advantage on most maps. Any script forcing certain spawn points on the starting villagers or enforcing greater distances between starting TCs will, in my opinion, totally defeat the point of this game mode. If anything, the OO2 starts are already less random than they were in the OO1 due to the predictability of the map generation itself. I think the map spawn is as fair as it can be, and the maps themselves are wonderful. The fact that some players will, after 5 minutes, through no fault of their own, find themselves in a more difficult position than others is an intended part of any FFA game mode.

Although I would consider it a different game mode altogether, random spawns and the lack of knowledge about the other players' positions and starting conditions are in my opinion important elements of a Nomad FFA.

    Games shouldn't be THAT decided by spawns. The first player was eliminated by spawn RNG. The last three standing had the best spawn positions, no arguments. A 200-pop player was the last to die and could hold against higher pop opponents for a long time just because of location and neighbourhood. Not to mention how far from water some players can spawn vs others being literally on the shore right from the gate.
    This is the only issue with the format and the whole tournament, otherwise it's the best and most fun thing about AoE 4 by far.

      @@llAlukall i guess they could start with enforcing (1) min and max range from another player to spawn (can't be closer than x or farther than y) and (2) for maps like this one, force tight distance range to shore (either very close to shore for everyone or like between two and three screens away from shore for everyone).
      You still retain the randomness of the map, you are still spawned randomly with relation to other players, there are still random civs... but it could be more fair and much more watchable.

      @@dr4kun To me that sounds like an entirely different game mode. Which is fine, why not, but I wouldn't consider it improving Nomad FFA.
      There's no spawning a certain distance from other players because the players themselves chose where they place their starting TCs. There's not even spawning at a certain point because your starting villagers spawn in different places across the map. Unless you want to change that, some players' bases will end up close together, and some players will end up alone in a corner. Because the TC placement and the distance between the bases, before anything else, does not depend on a map script. It depends on player choice, made with limited information, knowing everyone else is out to get you. And that's how this game mode in particular is supposed to be played.
      One could force 24 equidistant villager spawns with equal distances between every player's three starting villagers (or all three villagers at the same location) and at a fixed distance from water sources. On the already predefined maps. And to make it more balanced let's also enforce fixed distances between TCs as others have suggested. Of course all of that is possible. Because that's just the normal game.
      OO1 was a Nomad Megarandom FFA. As I said I like the maps we have seen so far, but I haven't made up my mind yet whether I'm really happy with OO2 being only semi-random (the player spawn is, but the map generation isn't). But from what I understand the tournament is at least supposed to be and supposed to stay a Nomad FFA, and I'm really grateful for that. I think there are some good suggestions, like making the Tasmania map a little bigger as Drongo said. Or giving the starting villagers extended vision or let every player start with a Scout as other commenters wrote, both would give the players more information without taking away from the premise of the scenario. Those are suggestions that I think are helpful and worth considering.
      Really sorry for ranting a bit, but I just don't think that making the starting conditions even less random improves this game mode. It just makes it less of what it is supposed to be.

      @@patrickducloux7523 That's a good point, in the OO early fighting is heavily incentivized. For that very reason I don't think it's a good idea to make all starting locations public to all players. Limited knowledge about the other players' starting conditions is, in my opinion, an important part of the game mode. An early Scout so as to give every playersmore information about their immediate surroundings in the first two minutes of the game sounds like a good idea though.

    Yes Beasty spawned in the absolute worst place possible. But just quiting and not trying is terrible for his brand. No one can take away he is a 1v1 master mind with insane apm. But tons of people love community games and that will drive the game forward more than the 1v1 scene for casual players. Look at aoe 2. So for one of the best players in the game to just quit and not even try to make an insane comeback feels just sad for the game in whole. Like imagine if the viper was in a community aoe 2 game, bad spawn and just ragequit. or hera, daut, etc.... Hopefully beasty realizes that he made a big mistake and says sorry. And again there are a bunch of proposed changes below to try and circumvent this in the future, but would of loved to see him play it out.

    If anyone else had quit like that Beasty would have been the first one making a massive issue out of it. All the other players saw it through to the bitter end even when their chances of survival were slim to none,there's always a chance of picking up some points,not least for a player of his calibre. There should be a penalty for throwing in the towel or you'll end up with players just quitting when it looks as if things aren't going their way. Anyone who watches Turin's FFA streams knows that quite often good players can come back from nearly being wiped out to win.

    Ah...to be honest Beasty had his fault in that. He saw China next to him and anyway, he decided to build TC nearly, while he had 2 workers on the other map side so...then he noticed 2 more players around and was gg.

    Shouldn't leaving be against the rules? In the spirit of the game, players need to make the best of whatever situation they find themselves in and they only lose when their king is sniped. With an exception for the last two players.

    Owing to constant cost (400G) for treason, civilisations with no walls like Mongols are all too easily exposed in midgame/lategame. All you have to do is keep clicking on treason and attack the town centers with your cavalry spam mass. 400G is nothing in lategame.
    I suggest to implement a dynamic pricing for treason. Or make its price based on number of enemy villagers like in age of empires 2. That way players use it a bit more conservatively, you can hide your kings better and this opens up chances for comebacks.

      I've seen a couple of comments like this during the games as well and I've been wondering how one would go about doing that. Or rather, what is there to be fixed? Players know what the maps look like in general: Tasmania with water on the edges and lots of resources in the center; Uluru with most resources in the corners and relics distributed along the edge of the map while the center is totally devoid of resources; how many trade posts and sacred sites there are, and where approximately they'll be located. They spawn in with three villagers in three different loations. They then pick their TC spots themselves. Sure - that's not something you want to wait too long to do (except for GUA maybe...), and of course you at that point just don't know where the other players are, but we're not going to change that now, are we? We don't see the first 1:40 minutes of the game, which is a bit of a shame, but at that point Beasty and Simtom seem to have gathered all their starting villagers in one spot, as far as I can tell from the mini map. That might mean that they had their villagers spawn a bit closer together, which in turn might limit their choices for TC spots, but I would consider the ability to bring all your starting villagers together faster than other players an advantage on most maps. Any script forcing certain spawn points on the starting villagers or enforcing greater distances between starting TCs will, in my opinion, totally defeat the point of this game mode. If anything, the OO2 starts are already less random than they were in the OO1 due to the predictability of the map generation itself. I think the map spawn is as fair as it can be, and the maps themselves are wonderful. The fact that some players will, after 5 minutes, through no fault of their own, find themselves in a more difficult position than others is an intended part of any FFA game mode.

    Hah, I love how drongo has talked up so much about how he/they changed all these rules in order to make the game more enjoyable. Yet one of the most simple factors of: spawning 4, sometimes 5, players stacked on top of each other can't be fixed. This just leads to boring early game gang ups to eliminate sandwiched players in the first 10 or 15 minutes. Then gives those players a huge advantage the rest of the game for teaming up on sandwiched players who stood 0 chance anyways due to a horrible spawn, pinned on both sides. How is that entertaining... Put in a simple code that spreads players out a little further on spawn... Last game and this game it is the same thing, early game play is just gang ups to take on the sandwiched players that don't stand a hope in hell to begin with; then the players that did the gang ups reap the rewards and have a huge pop. boost for the rest of the game how is that fair or even skill? Would much rather watch strategic alliances like last season if they can't fix spawns. atleast you see some skill shining through in that type of game play.... Can't say the people I know, or myself enjoy this style much where early teamers/gang ups get huge in game buffs for the rest of the game for little to no skill or resources spent... 👎👎👎

      ​@@patrickducloux7523 yep, I agree... even if they didn't eco but had to commit some kind of troop loss and resource loss which when you surrounded it seems you don't have to commit anything because the sandwich player is so suppressed. Too much of success or failure rests on the spawning here, and with a reward on king kills it results in ganging on the weakest (weakest being what seems to be the player in the middle)

      Yeah and to say you can move base, you are too far behind, after having all your resources pushed in etc. From having players stacked on top. Too much weight is on players spawn, should be spaced a little nicer to allow for more skillable play to be more the deciding factor, right now it doesn't feel like that's the case...

      100% poor sportsmanship, but from what I've seen of Beasty its doesn't seem out of character. They should change the scoring to remove points for rage quitters or for OO3 have a nomad style mode where the king has to set up a town centre and jump inside. Should be a cav unit too, no king would be walking.

    I think 50 pop per kill is perfectly fine. Striker played phenomenal and deserved this victory. It's lame though if players surrender in this game mode...

    Imagine the default pop of Aoe4 was 400. I still don't know why modern RTS games still go with old school pop caps. That knight push was legendary and actually felt like medieval armies clashing.
