A map in the actual shape of an octogon (using mountains) would be cool. Corners are too powerful defensively for lucky players starting near one. Would also be cool to have scouts always spawn near each of 8 edges on an octo map, with vills all spawing in the middle, hunger games style. No one would have a perceived advantage with a lucky spawn on a map and start like that. Still, great casting and action as always
as you describe would make for a good championship map.... let the rest be played on all these maps (these are pretty good and I like the Australian lore that goes with them too).

I don't pretend to have a higher understanding of the overall balance of the game.
Like several others mention, these spawn locations seem to be the biggest downside to the otherwise amazing Outback Octagon series. Would it be possible to set a 3-5 minute delay before anyone can actually build the TC? I imagine this would let people navigate away from some of the horrible locations, and possibly some amusing banter in the "pre-game" chat. Love your content Drongo, keep it up🙌

Random spawn locations is half of the fun. Overcoming a horrible spawn is fun to watch. The game type isn't about having an ideal test of pure skill, it's a chaos factory. That's why he flattened the prize pool and is offering bonus cash for players making fun plays.

I mean, 5 mins of no fight would kill any early agression. Also I doubt people would let themself have few mins of idle time in the beggining to go to other side of the map.

Hey Drongo, Suggestion for a potentially better start, have you tried nomadic game mode? Basically your resources start at 0 then over the course of a minute or two they increase to the amount needed for the TC and extra production. Instead of a starting scout which could skew the game balance the nomadic starting system would give players time to properly scout without having any disadvantages with waiting whilst others boom.
Then also a strange idea but with the population increases, maybe it could be based on your current age? For example MarineLoad in age 1 and you get a kill you get an extra +200 pop, if you go to age 2, your max pop goes to +100, then age 3 +50, age 4 +25. Could see some sneaky strategy where people stay in a lower age to have more troops or a better eco boom? Could be convoluted but could reward players for playing like a horde.
lol honestly this was awesome to watch. the only silly part is that i don't think some of the players realized that the kings have an ability to "briefly locate" the other kings? probably should make sure everyone knows about that for next game?
hey drongo i recently enjoy the outback octagon quite a bit. usually i like 1v1 matches more but somehow the dynamic of a FFA mixed with regicide is super tense und fun to watch. however what i disliked so far is the random spawns and "unfair" matches for some players. the best example would be beasty that surrenered very early. i had a thought that might be super stupid but maybe could change the dynamic. what if the beat opponent isnt out of the match but instead becomes a vassal of the player that beat him. so instead of granting a player +50 pop cap the vassal has a set amount of pop cap (50 might be a bit low) and can assist his lord by providing army and has to give away a %age of his ressources to his lord. so for example a trader will spawn every x-minutes and carries 10% of the ressources to the lord. the trader can still be killed on its way to its destination and the army the vassal produces is still in controll of the vassal. and if the lord is the winner of the game the vassal would get a point as well. i dunno if it is even possible to mod this into the game or if this is even a good idea. but it is an idea nonetheless and i thought i would share it.
Drongo, you must have probably been aaking the debs for thia already, but how is spec chat coming along for aoe4? It took years for them to implement it in aoe2 DE but im hoping it gets done quickly for aoe4.
@@WillieFungo I wouldn't say that. Late game aoe4 is hard. You Beasty build wall frequently for example. In this game, ML built where where he needed them. The window for Viper to build wall isn't as wide as you make it out to be. You have to send a good number of vils to build wall in time -- so it's meaningful. But you also have to have units to guard them. When exactly did Viper have the down time to do that?
Viper had quality units I think, he could've just grinded ML on multiple fronts, taking out his trade and production. Also, the second Vortix saw ML heading for his king, he should've cancelled the keep and just build walls. xD

Sure, Abba with +100 pop for mil is strong. But what the same people fail to understand is that this is a multi-varied approach. There are a lot of factors to take into account, one of the most common is human error. ML wasn't going camels, he could've but he wasn't. When it came to fights, ML was losing, Viper had a chance with multi-pronged attacks had he taken 3-5 minutes to scout the enemy and make a strong FOB, instead of deleting vills. A strong economy is required to fund any conflict. A 1-time all-out Hail Mary was never going to work in this situation. He gave it away the second he thought he could.

abba with +100 max pop? nah, ML wins that 100/100. abba are top 2 post imp civ, especialy with trade to allow you to spam camels or other fancy units
