- Edd China's Workshop Diaries 20: A date with destiny. (Fixing the perished Range Rover brake pipe, should the brake pipe really look like a wet twig?)
Just one more thing to fix before we can take our 1986 Range Rover out onto the road and to its MoT test - is this really it? Well, we're about to find out. Surely, now that it runs and it's clean, it's got drive and hopefully brakes that work, it will be ready for its MoT test. Or will we find yet more things that need to be fixed first?...

Thank you Edd (and your team) for sticking to your beliefs of what a great car show should be!
Wheeler Dealers youtube channel just posted episode #1 of the show. And there was Edd China, looking young, thin and with No grey hair!!!!
@@rickh6963 I hope Edd gets a cut. Looks like they can't do without him. They've got less than 300k subs in nine years, Edd got a quarter of a million subs in a year. Quality just works.
blame the american format on wheeler dealers for them it's all about the $$$$$$$$ with advertising - ed did the right thing getting out
Yep, couldn’t agree more!
I used to replace lots of brake pipes on cars when i worked at National Tyres and autocare. My most memorable has to be a vw golf "C" registered. The entire system needed new brake pipes mainly because of the same thing where the pipes join. I did one at a time and kept it connected to an old Lucas brake bleeder machine which i had to disconnect in between. Took a while so luckily he left it with us while he went on holiday.
The car is still on the road to this day. This brought back that memory.
Great show Edd thank you.
Will I ever need to rebuild a rusted brake line? No. Do I want to watch Edd rebuild a rusted brake line? YES!!!!
I've had to make a few brake lines before, but I still enjoyed watching Edd do it!
I almost ruined one of mine, so I've watched some videos on it. This was a good demonstration.
First time I've seen it done. 😎
I can't drive but good series and great workmanship.
😂
Cameraman should be congratulated on his closeup filming and general camera work. Production team work is excellent.
Or maybe he should avoid close-ups altogether in the future - seeing the rotten frame in details gave me goosebumps :-)
Other TH-camrs: Barn find abandoned for 30 years started and driving in just 10 minutes!!!
Edd: 40 minutes of fabricating a brake pipe.
This is why we love you Edd ❤️
Edd China for the win!
Binky: 7 years of fabricating brackets.
To be honest, a barn one, especially if its been prepared for storage, will be in a lot better condition than this out door one
One big difference here is what is acceptable to drive on the road in one place vs another. In Europe you need an MOT, and insurance to drive. In many parts of the world, if you put fuel in it and it goes forward then its good to go. Derek from VGG would have got this beast running with a boat fuel tank, changed the oil and the trans fluid and as the front 2nd brake circuit sort of works, driven 1000 miles home. If he had temporary insurance (which he normaly does) he would be good to go and it would be perfectly acceptable!.
Fascinating to see that some old clunkers are not beyond saving (as long as you have knowledge, experience, creativity, persistence, stubbornness, the right tools and a well-equipped workshop !). What one hears is that current Range Rover engineering and manufacturing will never again produce a car that be brought to life after 40 years of hard driving and neglect. A really excellent channel. Well done all involved.
With this every Friday I don't miss wheeler dealers at all.
Not anymore !
Not missing WD doesn't take that much effort to be honest...
Its a good replacement
Wheeler what ?

Your production team's creative shots and editing are top-notch quality...a real pleasure to watch.
True that, I haven't found another mechanical channel with as clear quality and production value, it's great!
Gotta keep those sponsors happy, too! 😁

@@toyotacorollae1407 Ah yeah, Flexiny too now I think about it.
the choice of sounds to accompany the images of the brakes being bled took me to a new dimension, ok maybe not, but with the nightmare of music copyright, it's usually a big downer but not with the creativity of the accompanying sounds, they bring something pleasant to the party, good stuff
I'm glad you used the coper lines. That's a permanent fix because the car will rust away long before the line breaks again. Glad you didn't stop after Wheeler Dealers days. Wold be awesome for the old crew to get back together and make a car running again for fun. You are a great mechanic Edd
Whoever does the camera work and editing is doing a fantastic job. Your show is really up there and ready for TV.
I don't miss Wheeler Dealers at all.
With the quick pace and interesting projects, your new show is a great hit!
This is 10 x better than anything Wheeler Dealers ever did - no detail with them just theatre! Well done Edd China, really interesting stuff from which we can all Learn
I like wheeler dealers a lot, but there were a lot of details in the repair that were edited out to meet the 44 minutes per show. I really like this format better, keep showing the mistakes and repairs as they come instead of over editing them out! Great work!
The intro, isn't that Queen, We will rock you?
Ed, I'm glad you're still around, wrenching in the workshop. You have a unique way of explaining things, that gets through to my thinking. Thanks!
Do not judge someone else’s past; you don’t know your future
@@margaritasycheva4670 what are you on about?
Love the authenticity of your videos.
Enjoy this so much - let’s be honest Ed was the best part of WD by far.
Ed was better of course
Edd was/is a rare breed. An honest mechanic to say the least, a passionate engineer. Mike is a used car salesman. Enough said.
You're absolutely right! Felt that way sinds the beginning. I remember Edd with dark hair and reparing a Ford capri and the Porsche 924. There is something to be said about ''used car salesman'' and ''integrity''. The first chance Mike got he ran of with American producers with cheesy commercial ideas that ruined a good car program. Just like that producer who fired Jeremy from Top Gear. I hate this day and age but God am I thankful that Edd is on his own now! He was genuinely the only interesting factor in that program.
Ant Anstead isn't too bad, he does do the same things as Edd, but it's what the editor leaves in and what the director & producer want that makes the most difference.
@@neilbarnett3046 I’m sure editing plays a major role but I think this channel is what Edd had in mind, a more in depth auto repair/restore show, whereas WD has gone more in the way of a car flipping show.
Thanks Edd and crew again👍👍 until next week.
Finally someone shooting these videso in 4k with a good cinematography. SO satisfying

I love how all he needs to do is use the tools, they sell themselves after that.
Edd, these videos are so well put togeter, lots attention to detail, I love them! This is definitely what I would expect to see in your channel, many thanks!
Edd = National treasure
Ed you are the man. Watching you fabricate and bend the brake pipe was outstanding.
Hey Edd nice job what I love about these videos is the fact you take the time to show the process I know with the tv shows you always had time constraints but they alway felt rushed and incomplete for people like myself interested in how it all works.. this is way better.
Much appreciated for the time you take to bring us all along….
That new pipe just doubled the value of the car. I just found your channel Edd and I'm super happy.
Perhaps you should just dip the entire vehicle in the rust remover you used for the gas tank... thanks for taking us along on this journey
😂
Well, dissolving the whole car is certainly going to deal with it 😂
I'd really like to see someone go over a rusty car with a 'cleaning' laser like Narran manufacture. Would be interesting to see what was left.
Strap the whole car to a cement mixer and fill it with bolts, just to be sure.
there will be nothing left to take out.
This is the only reason why I watched that car show with the chubby dude. So glad you are getting content back out there Edd!
Brilliant Episode Edd. Reminds me of a mini a friend had that had been sitting for about four years. I spent three weeks doing tons of jobs on it and finally getting it through an MOT. Greatest feeling in the world. Like to this Rangey getting fully restored 👍🏻
Well thank goodness, he's back. When I explained to my lovely wife the dissolution of "the team", her response was: "Mr. China takes you through the repair process most thoroughly". To capture her interest regarding mechanical repair topics, you have to be outstanding,
Did I learn anything watching this after running a successful business working on old cars for the last 15 years? Nope.
Did I enjoy it? Absolutely!
The cinematography and music even the little sound effects are spot on! Like the sound of the bubbles played by the flute lol made my day
I’m so fortunate to be slowly restoring an old Range Rover and have Ed’s amazing tutorials to assist me! 👏
“It’s fuel injection, it’s bound to” 😂🤣
This along with Project Binky is my kinda entertainment. I think they can learn much across the pond, rather than repetition and continuous adverts.
A couple more epic channels like binky and Edd and I can cancel Netflix and finally stop paying my TV license...
Judging by the state of this Range, it could take as long as Binky to see the road! 🙈🤣
@@peteledwidge3631 By the time Binky is on the road, it'll need converting to electric to meet homologation. :)
I just watch, I don't have any questions.I watch and learn keep them coming Edd China!!
Ed - have to admire your perseverance with the old Rangie. Cannot believe just how crusty it is everywhere you look. Cannot wait to see finished job!
I'm just so happy to see you doing exactly what you want to do Edd. Teaching this global community some skills we otherwise would never have exposure to. Thanks for carrying on the show, being the wealth of information you are and interacting with the community. Bravo sir
Best video so far!!!!😁😁😁 back to the basic super descriptive. There's the old Edd China bravo🤗🤗😁😁😁😁😁 i knew you had left in ya.
If you get an MOT for that rust bucket you are a magician! Can't wait to see the result.
I have a sneaky suspicion the 'pass' list will be shorter than the 'fail' list.... Best book a double-slot for the MOT Edd, no way 45 minutes is long enough for that old shed!!
A new car that is set ablaze will get better inspection results than this one.
Love the way you don't skip the problems (usually rust) we all encounter, this is a great show Edd, be proud of the following you have.
Love this series, hope there is many more!
Considering it needs a full strip down body off rebuild, I'd imagine there will be more
@@jwatkins5155 Definitely, but when this is up and running I hope he finds something else to work on 🙂
@@jwatkins5155 to be honest the chassis isn’t that bad. The out riggers are the only serious issues I’ve seen and the can be done body on. Only area you can’t see is the top of the chassis. That’s where my defender was rotten. I replaced all the out riggers and rear crossmember. Got it through the MOT and then realised the top of the chassis was missing in a fair few spot. I could have spent time and effort welding it up. But a new chassis delivered was £2000. Not a terrible price if you ask me
It’s always a “joy” and oh that feeling when rusty fittings unscrew! The joys of being a mechanic!
This is a great show Im hooked. Ed is such a great problem solver.
Excellent series!
I'll never own a classic Range rover but it's great watching the transformation to a running vehicle.
Better than regular television!!
Ed, good morning.
The Range Rover project its wonderful!
Your are a excelent engineer, and person.

The show looks like WD with all the cons gone. Thank you for the every daily dose of edd fixing stuff. I didn’t realize I need that until I lost it .
It's very interesting, thanks for videos. Best Wishes from Saint-Petersburg, Russia.
The epitome of patience and attention to detail 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍
This is how advertisers should use TH-cam. As someone who tries to avoid adverts at every stage, the subtle shots of the Ansell gloves and power tools added to the quality of this video. Eddvertising masterclass. I even bought a box of those gloves online (oh...and Subscribed) Nice job!
I have no desire for old cars at all especially for SUV-s but I enjoy watching him fixing things.
im here in the U.S.(Michigan) we use salt in the winters one of my projects is a mercury grand marquis, the brake lines have suffered likewise from the years and the car sitting ( its a 1996) I am impressed by the level of expertise it takes to fabricate new lines, my mechanic makes everything seem so easy...
We put salt on the roads here in the uk in the winter its rusts best friend lol
I have made new copper brake pipes, it is easy to do with a hand flanging tool, takes five minutes longer, but not hard. You don't have to be so fussy when running it along the car, as long as it is secured to the body (you can get plastic clips) and it is not hampering or rubbing against anything. Did all the brake pipes on my old car and it sailed through the MOT. It felt a bit spongy after bleeding, but a few hefty pushes on the peddle shifted the bubble of air and it worked its way to where it could be expelled. He commented on the hand brake but it just passed, it improved with use and in the end would lock the back wheels when driving along the road. I think it was just a bit of contamination on the rear brakes. He also commented on one wheel that was feathering a tyre, so he aligned it for next to nothing. He also broke his shifter while trying to loosing a track rod end nut. I tried not to laugh, but failed. He said it had a crack in the jaw of it for ages, it has been a spanner for 30+ years, been hammered on, put on the end of a long pipe with two people pushing on the pipe, it owes me nothing. Been a good shifter, but I was needing a new one anyway.
He was quite strict with MOTs, but he lost his licence for them, never found out why!
Should I care if this thing passes MOT? Do I? ABSOLUTLEY!!!! Can't wait for the next installment.
Edd you're a good teacher. We learn lots from you, good man.
We love you Ed!
This is great. So much work to find out how much more work is needed. Classic. Looking at the blue smoke coming out of the exhaust at the end, I'd say this show isn't over yet. Cheers
I miss the orange gloves! So happy to see Edd back doing his thing.
Great video Ed.When I was a apprentice in the early 90s my boss had exactly the same brake flare tool,I haven’t seen one in a very long time and they worked a treat. In a small workshop In Melbourne we would convert import USA Porsche’s 356 to right hand drive and I had to hand bend these brake lines. 👍🇦🇺
I like the fact that we see projects from start to finish. None of this coming back from a commercial break and to find the engine/ transmission have been changed and it’s had a paint job.
Whoever does the editing on these videos is doing a great job 👍 Loving the RR series Edd!
Loving the series, far better than wheeler dealers, the in depth analysis of how to do things is what wheeler dealers need to show, keep up the amazing work
I love this show. I have made many bake lines for old rusty vehicles here in Chicago. I usually do this by hand. I knew about these line bending tools and now I will have a clue about using them properly. Thank you
It's a pleasure looking at you at work
This is exactly the kind of videos I love! Fixing up an old beat up car that's really nothing special, which most of us can relate to. I also like that you have the perfect balance between being informative, detailed and entertaining. 👍👍
I'm thinking about buying a secondhand R/Rover, your workshop diaries are a great help
Using the bender as an angle gauge is a great tip! I always eyeballed the angle and then compared to the old pipe.
one of the few videos I could watch while being on the edge of my seat every minute
Todo un genio Edd China ,veo todos sus programas..
Every time I watch this series I feel better and more hopeful about my 400,000 mile 1990 RRC.
Nice work Ed.
Nice to see Ed Recycling this RR back onto the road eventually, in a society Today where we are more often scrapping relatively repairable cars which can be used for many more years to come.
The UK and car dealers offering Scrappage incentives is part of the reason many of these old vehicles are scrapped because with a move to a greener society they are getting to the point that in a few years the Emission regulations will be almost impossible to meet.
thank you very much, edd, for the subtitles in portuguese! my dad loves watching dealers whealers and now are watching your channel! cheers from brazil!
Result!
Edd, you should consider taking advantage of the current mania for ASMR videos and just present loops of activities like you recreating knackered brake lines. What a lovely thing to watch!
Your hand skills + common sense analysis are a joy...
All the best, sir!
A shout out to the audio engineers on the show. My hearing is a bit compromised after a career around loud noises and most of the time I turn on closed captioning. But never with this. Between Edd’s clear voice and the outstanding audio quality I can enjoy the series with them off. Bravo.
Ed, there is a flat die on the rotary part of the flaring tool. Before fully tightening the clamp, it pushes the pipe back to exactly flush with the end of the die blocks. Takes away the guesswork. By the way in the states we call Cunifer "NiCopp". Thanks for the great content!
Cheers
Not on this tool.
Straight forward, simple,no B.S...Enjoyed it.As one old mechanic to another great job on the whole thing.Clean clear video and explanations.Quality all the way.
Who needs to do a college course in car mechanics when you can just watch Edd? :)
I was taught to use a T-bar, not a ratchet for grease nipples, bleed nipples, sparkplugs and injectors. Even rotational force with less chance of angling the socket extension. Love your vids Edd!
A first class mechanic and a first class story teller as well and an all round nice guy. I can see why you’re approaching nearly a million subscribers.
Keep up the good work. As I said before, from one 6’5 VW enthusiast to another, feel free to come and play air cooled beetles with me at any time!
Used to always see your show on the tele but had no idea about your channel.
I was getting tired of seeing just American mechanics with American cars... I'm so glad I found your channel, probably the best suggestion TH-cam ever made me 😃.
Every time I watch this, I feel refreshed in the sense that a repair has been possible and done by a professional. Great video edd 👍🏼👍🏼
It was a lovely surprise so see Ed and the Range Rover today when I stopped for fuel, loved the energy you had going on even when you were off camera.
Oh, the memories of my childhood, takes me back to being 10 years old, holding old and new brake pipes together while my dad shaped the new one to match the old.
This, and "Fire watch", while he was welding underneath a car! I was inside with a watering can, and all the fumes of burning underseal, and paint! Happy days.🤩
Great to see you back. Production values are great and I'm not even bothered by the odd "Accidental" product placement.
So great to see a car mechanic show with no "If we don't finish by morning we will lose the shop!" Bull eggs.
The amount of knowledge gained in these videos is priceless. Thanks a lot Edd and Crew.
Edd is one lucky Sonuvagun... Having the fittings crack loose with an open-end! Living in rust country (MN) you immediately go for a flare/tubing wrench and pray for the best. 99% of the time you'll be grabbing for the locking pliers (ViseGrips) and then making new lines.
It’s all good until you flare both ends of your tube and look over to find the ends still in your work bench. Lol. Love this series!
😂😂😂😂😂 sounds like it has happened to you b4 it happened to me once 😂😂😂
@@Rasigarage it has happens to me. Not in automotive application. I was making a hydraulic line for an airplane. Made two of the most perfect flares known to man. Only to find that the ends were laughing at me from the workbench. Lol
@@michaellearn5117 😂😂😂😂 and thats when you just did ur best work
Wait until you congratulate yourself for routing the new pipe neatly, only to discover you fitted one of the ends(who owns a flaring tool without a selection of new fittings, which are only a few pence each?) the wrong way around...
I like the reservoar filling device you had whilst bleeding the brakes. Great show by the way.
I'm a mobile tyre fitter (my own business), and I noticed the sidewall of the tyre splitting as you lowered it back on the floor!
It'll be interesting to see if they fail or give an advisory on those tyres!
I'd be changing all the tyres anyway - they've been sitting for a long time. Assuming, of couse, that the rusty old clunker gets through the MOT.....
@@qtronicqilt8898 Cheers, but its a bit far for me to call out to!
@Pollywog And your point is?
@@qtronicqilt8898 I suspect he (or she) wouldn't want to come to Australia just to change tyres.....
I love the tempo of your show. I've been wrenching on cars for all of my adult life, so I'm not learning anything new here, but it's a stark contrast to the way I operate. I'm always cursing and moving quickly. I especially don't like doing rusty brake lines because they tend to break in more spots than they even were before I start in on them. You're cool, collected, calm, and the camera work really sets it off. Nice job.
Also, I really like that flaring tool. If I have another big project where I need to do a bunch of flares, I might pick one up.
38:06 It was nice of Edd's identical twin brother to help out briefly. No number plates is an instant MOT fail I think (unless you're the Queen!).
I think the 'twin brother', is a nod to one of the early Wheeler Dealers seasons that also featured 'multiple Edds'.
So fab to finally see a honest channel that really dose show the hassle that car restoration and repairs can be 10/10 to Edd
Thanks to Edd and everyone involved. This series is great!
Nice horse in the end👌
I appreciate the time Edd took to explain "Dog Eggs" & "Horse Apples" to those unfamiliar w/the terms. You are guaranteed to learn something on every episode of #WorkshopDiaries. I learned about annealing brake lines - I've replaced the lines on my own car, & if I'd known about that, I would've been done faster back in the day :) Thanks Edd!
Who knew that watching a rusty brake line being replaced could be such good viewing?!?
Loving your work Edd!
When you measure the length of the old brake pipe, use piece of string stretch it from bend to bend, it's way more accurate. In case of short pipe, it doesn't matter that much, but with longer ones it makes work way easier.
Top tip: use a thin bicycle gear-cable. Feed it through the pipe to the other end until it comes out. Measure it and you’re laughing.
@@coennijmeijer89 must try it!
when Edd said 'Classic' surely he meant 'Jurassic', love the photography tricks at the end, learned some awesome technical terms as well, notably, dog eggs and road apples, now that is classic
It's nice to be able to learn something from watching Edd again, like the old Wheeler Dealers before they started changing the camera angle every 3 seconds to cater for viewers with no attention span.
I was gonna read this til the end, but lost attention... 🤣 Joking! I fully agree. 👌
Edd brings compassion in addition to the mechanical skill. That’s the special ingredient he had in WheelerDealers that made me a faithful fan of that show. This is a better vehicle, pun intended, for his sardonic subtlety and canny craftsmanship. Warms the cockles.
The channel is going great guns. I'm really pleased for you all. I love the production too. So relaxing and informative. I agree with a previous commentator that the absence off music all over everything is a welcome relief from over produced stuff on TV. I look forward to you hitting 1 million subs which I expect will happen soon. Would love to see a full restoration.
Finally figured out how so much work can get done in these videos. TWO Edds. Really, each one of these posts is a treat. I realize that Edd is doing this refurb for a mate, but seriously, how much work and at what cost before the vehicle is beyond economical repair
