Even though I haven’t had these in my system for a decade, I think you nailed this. They were the best home theater speaker I ever had. Their Sierrra 1 fills in the bass but I thought they lost a little of the midrange magic these have. I would still recommend them for home theater duty with a sub. 👍✌

    Timing in life is everything.
I walked into my local GW, and at that EXACT moment, a lady was carrying the mate to a pair of HTM-200 Ascend Acoustics. Sixteen bucks later, I got them home, reglued the lip of the surrounds (someone got happy with the bass, methinks) and popped out the child-damaged dustcaps.
I am absolutely gobsmacked at these. Paired with my Miller & Kreisel sub, they have bested all my other gear. I have EV, McIntosh, Yamaha, Polk, you name it, but for my room and ears, these killed them all.
I cannot make sense of it.

I have both nrt domes and RAAL center so I understand some of the nuances of both designs.
Just recently Dave elaborated that his cost for the nrt/64-10 tweets are similar this was relating to the towers fwiw....not exactly apples to apples but in his opinion the towers with original nrt can handle more power and play louder so switching out the nrt for the smaller raal in the towers is moot. Personally...I'm in the same boat if I felt the switch to the xbr70-20 would give me that edge for home theater I would've done it by now...but the RAAL is the preferred twet for music in most cases....but I'm a 50-50 guy and have great headphones to boot...so I rather not spend 1200.00 cdn to upgrade anytime soon.

The sad thing is that once Tannoy, KEF, and a few holdouts were bought out by overseas firms in Asia or moved their production there, it's essentially all the same stuff with slightly different designs and stickers stuck on it. The reason is that they find firms in China or elsewhere, send them the design specs, and they are all made in the same few factories with the same cost-cutting and mediocre quality control. It's basically Box B with a specific driver, some foam thrown in, and the same off the shelf crossover since nobody actually tears one apart to check.
Ascend at least isn't charging a fortune for their sound and quality control/assembly is done in the U.S.
If you want the same sound in a smaller package, but powered, the M-Audio MX5 are a good choice. Despite the smaller driver, the frequency response graph is almost identical. Roughly the same sound, price, *and* powered? I can't wait for him to review these are they typically sell for about $320 a pair, on sale. Someone is selling them on discount no matter the time of year, so this is a pretty easy to find price.

Someone's smoking something if they actually think these can compare to LS50's. The 170's are bright, even with tubes and can't create a soundstage with much depth. There's a reason why these haven't made a big splash. They're just not that good.

    • @DBravo29er
      @DBravo29er 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I found them bright, etched, unrefined, and the cause of listening fatigue. Narrow sound stage width and nearly no depth at all. Even compared to the original LS-50's, these were a tough listen. The Meta's just destroyed them in an A/B comparison. Didn't matter what amp was used. Benchmark AHB2, ATI, Monoprice Monolith, Willsenton 805 based tube amp. The 170's were just a tough listen.

I think when it comes to a living room speaker, that gets placed to perform and therefore occupies a bit of the room, to me it is important that the speakers are pleasant to look at. Maybe not in the sub$400€ category. But the further beyond $500€ it gets the more important it is. I mean what is pretty and what is bland is still a fair debate and personal preference, not everyone seeks the wood box look, some like it a bit more futuristic looking, some prefer white some black speakers.

As Randy commented himself, he didn’t like the LS50. He could not pair them well amplification wise. Not surprised he didn’t get much bass out of them when these were underpowered while reviewing. The comparison with the LS50 is completely out of line. Properly driven the LS50’s (both generations) are a complete other class. They go much deeper way into the 50 hrz region with deep fast bass, have a very wide soundstage, excellent layering and separation, clean, detailed and sublime micro dynamics. The first generation LS50 could be on the bright side in some configurations, what is the only comparison spot on. Built, sonically and aesthetically the LS50’s are in a complete different league. Of course Randy’s perspective is from his own experience with poorly paired amplification. That’s why his LS50 review is so much different then of other well respected reviewers. Nothing against Randy, but he didn’t go through the length to make the LS50 perform up to it’s potential.

I tried these little speakers several years ago. There were things about them I really liked and some things I didn't. I liked the detail as it is a really detailed speaker. Very flat frequency response until you get to the bass. Cannot recall depth but stage size was large enough especially for them being a small speaker.
What I didn't like was, well lack of bass but a sub will fill in just fine. What bothered me was the tone. Everything seemed to take on a similar sound. Like when you have a meal and out and take all the leftovers together in a box and after sitting long enough everything tastes similar. Strange but that's how I interpreted that.
It's like individual instruments lacked that certain color (not talking about flat response) that distinguishes it from other instruments. At the time, there were only two people critical of the AA CBM-170se, myself and one other while others' experience were more positive.
This SQ I experienced may have been a result of the lack of bass or my equipment which may have not had a working synergy.
These should work fine on a desktop and if I recall they were a little forward sounding. Very modest looking but built well enough. Definitely perform to their price point. But not a unicorn, just a different flavor and option. Smaller speakers with drivers closer together can sound a bit like the Kef LS-50 but the Kefs under a variety of conditions would still outperform the CBMs as well they should if the equipment is of commensurate quality, meaning Kef likes quality power..
They are the so called poor man's alternative but may perform even better with better amps and dacs.

Loving the videos, Randy! Guys, I need some advice. With a budget of £200-£300 what are the best options for my set up?
I'll be playing music from Spotify (phone/laptop) in a smallish room. Speakers will be close to the wall. The amp I've decided upon is the Fosi audio bl20c at £90.
    Speakers: Ive short-listed the following:
    Wharfedale 9.1 £99.99
    Q Acoustics diamond 3020 £129.99
    Wharfedale diamond 220 £129.99
    JBL sound stage a130 £179.99
    Elac debut b5.2 £209.99
    Emotiva Airmotiv b1+ £225.
Is the amp I've chosen capable of driving the speakers? What speaker should I get/avoid?
I love bass but don't want it drowning the treble and midrange. Will likely be listening at lowish volumes as well. Mostly listen to hip hop, reggae, house and funk music.
    Thanks in advance!

I've noticed that some speaker companies that concentrate primarily on home theater take the added subwoofer bass to assist the other speakers for granted and design the surrounds etc with that in mind. I think that sometimes they just take one of their surround speakers and call it a book shelf speaker but with some more design feature that actually counted on it being a stand alone book shelf you might get a different more full range result. The speaker is ported but some surrounds are not ported so they can be put against the wall and the bass suffers. Just another audio musing.

Another reason one may not have heard of Ascend speakers is because most super popular audio reviewers won't consider touching anything not officially considered "audiophile" or in some cases they won't touch anything that cost less than $9000 or something because they think nobody is interested. There are folks who spend all their time watching about stuff they can never afford for some reason. Personally, why anyone would want to torture themselves into a depression and end up unsatisfied with everything they have because someone says to is beyond every psychology class and field experience I ever had under my belt.
Randy, you are doing what I should have done long ago, so kudos to you! I was doing what you do in written media from 2013 thru 2017, strictly volunteer and independent. I should have done it via TH-cam at some point back then, but I have cameraphobia (I just found out that is the clinical name) and could not figure out how the hell to get on TH-cam with that in the way.
I recently figured out the way in what I want to do, but only partly and I am not comfortable being too much in public so to speak. I'm not into social media at all and I'm not looking to be well known or whatever. (I refuse to get a facebook or whatever they call themselves now, twitter or anything like that).
Just as the whole reason I was an audio journalist in written media, I just want to help the common folk domestic and international. So I thought it best to be left up to the pros and such when it comes to being on TH-cam.

I've seen other demo videos with these speakers producing a lot of bass. With stuff link pink floyd, dire straits, etc... Their site says states that they can be placed basically anywhere. Maybe moving them closer to a wall would bring out that bass you were missing. With the import SEAS tweeters, and aerogel woofers, these are a crazy value. I enjoy good bass, and ideally would like to hear down to 40-45hz or so in-room with what i listen to. Your review stating these have no bass is what's holding me back from buying them. For me, It's basically between these, the Polk ES20, or the Emotiva B1+. Leaning toward the polks due to their power port producing some nice punchy deep bass.
With that said, I don't see how their Sierra-1's with 5.25" woofer are rated down to 39hz, while these with a 6.5" long throw woofer are only rated down to 53hz.

There are alot of speakers at that price point. Monitor Audio recently droped the price of their Silver 100s to $800. The new model is six hundred more so there's one option. It excels at home theater and is pretty good with most music leaning more towards Rock. I have Focal but there are alot of options. @@sbromley6739 My impressions are literally the inverse of yours. With the KEFs generating a wider, taller, and deeper soundstage, with more clearly stratified point sources within that soundstage. I found the KEF's bass to be more dependent upon position than the 2EX. KEF sounded much better above 1.5khz as volume rose, whereas the 2EX quickly developed a hardness for leading edge transients that carried over near all of the notes as volume was pushed further. This came with a tonal shift in the 2EX where the deeper bass gave way and the tweeter seemed to outrun the midwoofer. No apparent clipping was occurring from the speaker verified none from the amps. I found the treble above 12khz to be tilted up on the 2EX. This isn't bad and was actually very pleasant on some songs. But I didn't find it consistently pleasing or particularly natural. I actually find the 2EX to be significantly more aesthetically pleasing than the Metas, but that wasn't enough for me to order a pair for myself. I can "fix" the LS-50 Meta's weak point (bass below 60hz) with subs. I am not aware of a fix for narrower, shallower soundstage, and that hardness that became increasingly evident as volume rose past 80dB at the listening position. I can definitely see the allure of the 2EX, but I still have verified hearing up to 19.5khz per my last audiogram and I don't need ANYTHING above 10khz to be that strong. However, that's not what others may like and this is totally fine. The 2EX appeared to be a well made speaker but wasn't as dense as the Metas.
