When you said "resisting cat urges" I would have loved, loved if there was a panel where the character was sweating. They focus on her face, an internal monologue where she's desperate and terrified of what she's becoming. Zoom out She's staring at a cup on the edge of a table.
Joan was Stan Lee's wife's name. She was also a model back in the 40's. Also, I think this comic was, in part, an homage to Millie the Model. Joan has a little bit of Millie in her character, she's light, she's smart, but ditzy, and very good hearted. Stan wrote Millie for many years, and a lot of the tropes in this comic, like the sleazy modelling agency, the way guys go ga-ga over her beauty, these are straight out of Millie.
Stan did love to base character's off his wife he did it with Gwen Stacy and Sue Storm as well. It wouldn't surprise me if maybe there was some Millie in there, that comic ran for such a long time and did start in the Timely era (and this issue does have that Timely magazine reference). It's interesting to see which of the romance characters trickled down, Millie and Patsy made it into the mainline Marvel universe, and Millie's influence has ties to Archie comics Dan DeCarlo. Man you've got me wanting to make a Millie video!
@@CasuallyComics MAKE IT! Millie is totally forgotten, people don't even remember Marvel did comedy before "Deadpool." Personally, though, I kinda like "Chilli," the mean girl. I guess Raven in Stan's Catwoman was based on her. Actually, that would explain the "redhead" in the script, but not in the art.
@@CasuallyComics Yes, please make it! I love to learn about the more forgotten corners of comics history. Most people don't even know that Millie The Model existed, much less that the line was personally written by Stan Lee for years, and he LOVED writing it! That whole era of comics is just so weird. Romance comics got huge, obviously horror, even sports stars got their own comics. It seemed like anything BUT superheroes was popular.
This could have gone in a totally unexpected way. Instead of cat powers, she could have gained cat behavior. Sleeping all day, catching mice. Just like a real-life model😂
For some reason the origin reminds me of the awful Catwoman movie. Just the idea of her getting cat powers from a near death experience just gives me those flashbacks. Those terrible terrible basketball flashbacks
"Just Imagine" was amazing. I kind of look at it as Stan's last great work. His Wonder Woman was amazing, I honestly wish they'd bring that character into the DC universe.
Stan Lee's letter really shows how magnanimous the man was. Sure, he did it for fun and got paid, but he didn't do it to disrespect those who came before him. He realized he was standing on the shoulders of those that came before him he was just making a contribution to the DC legacy. A lot of modern comic book writers could take some pages from Stan Lee's book in etiquette and how he addressed comic book fans. Still, now I hope new readers can see that Absolute isn't anything new or ground breaking, it happens every so often, Elseworlds, Reboots, New Imprints, Tangents, Rebirths, Dawns, Future States so on an so forth. TBH, it would be fucked up if it weren't , given taht it didn't come inthe 40s or 60s like the OG DC and Marvel, but in the 2000s. Not to discredit Stan, he did try his best even back then in spite of all the social bs going about, and many of the improvements come later is due to him and other creators like him actually doing something within their industry(ies).
The fact that no one (except for the one guy) recognizes a famous model because her hair is different is somehow less believable than "I got my powers from a green lightning bolt in my window"
While it wasn't great storywise i think a lot of the criticism came from Ed Brubaker doing amazing work on the main Catwoman title when it came out. That run really sets the bar for how Catwoman can be written.
hmm. Creations like these Lee did in his later years makes me REALLY wonder how much creative input he had with some of the characters he is accredited to have created. Still give the man props for the influence he brought to the industry. RIP Stan Lee.
Wait, the whole "maybe he's handsome" thing... HOLY CRAP, LOIS LANE IS JOANIE'S MOTHER! Also, the only villain who should be referred to as "Fishbowl Head" is Mysterio. I will die on that hill.

I LOVE this series, so glad you did a review for this book in particular! I saw so much potention to the concept of making Catwoman like Spiderman, but my god what a crazy annoying read this was, you made it much more fun haha
16:13 I think that's the case for a lot of the Just Imagine heroes, where their origins feel like a combination of Marvel and DC heroes. Superman is Hawkman and Mar-Vell, Flash is Beast Boy and Whizzer, Shazam is Hulk and Etrigan... it's not all of them, but it's a pattern I've noticed.
I didn’t really like any of the Just Imagine books but I agree that a lot of them had some fun ideas that could be fleshed out more in interesting ways. As for my favorite Catwoman era, I might be in the minority here but I loved her One Year Later storyline by Will Pfeiffer. Her characterization as a thief who was also a mother, the revamp of Film Freak into a truly frightening villain, the way they used Zatanna… It was all such great storytelling that elevated Selina from a character I liked to one of my favorite characters in the DCU!
Great idea for a video! You have to remember that it was designed to be a "one shot" so that obviously limited Stan who had more ideas than just a single comic story. I enjoyed these Stan does DC comics when they came out and still do for the most part. I always seem to like Stan's writing so this series was fun, but not as "momentous" as I thought it might be. It would have been much more interesting had it been done at the beginning of the Bronze Age when DC truly started showing the influence of Silver Age Marvel.
If I got a chance to take a stab at this I'd definitely lean more into the awkward cat characteristics Also I need a toxic yuri Joanie/Raven rivals to lovers fic yesterday
She feels like a reskinned Mary Jane Watson (the modeling, the self doubt, the quipping) Lee had a lot of time writing her and occasionally they gave her powers too. (Also I’d love for you to go back to some tangent, mostly love the first two outings but have thoughts past that)
I would be interested in seeing a bit more of this take on Catwoman, especially with her being fleshed out a bit more. I like the idea of her being made more sassy and catty, and there are some other fun things they can do with her powers based on how abstract they already are.
In answer to your video's title - yes. :) I bought this when it came out for the Chris Bachalo art and came across it in one of my boxes recently. I tried to re-read it. I got a quarter way through then just looked at the pretty pictures.
We respect that Stan Lee was really more of a writer than a creative. This awful series just shows that it was really Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko that gave our favorite characters the way they look.
The way Jodie got her powers reminds me of Tokyo Mew Mew. Even the idea that her claws sprout whenever she gets emotional makes me think of Ichigo growing cat ears and a tail whenever she got flusttered.
I thought this was gonna be about the Marvel Catwoman(s) the two separate characters who were cat like thieves who appeared once exactly one year after Catwoman debuted. They both basically had this look before Catwoman when they debuted her last appearance was with the cat head so I am justified in having believed that.
A lot of the issues with the Stan Lee Imagines... are stuff I think Stan Lee just struggled with. He's really good at powers and basic ideas but he needed other, more imaginative partners to make them really work
The what if Stan Lee thing to me just proved that Stan Lee wasn’t the big influence on the creation of the marvel characters as we’ve been lead to believe
In one panel Catwoman said to Fleshcrawler, "Your power can't touch anyone who moves too fast." I still don't know what his power is, lol! Apparently, from another panel, he can make someone's flesh crawl so bad it is worse than death. Is the power physical or mental? How does it work? How is it avoided by speed? What does it have to do with the containment suit? I didn't even see the power demonstrated. It's hard to take him seriously as a threat. Well anyway, the panel that revealed his face must have certainly disappointed Joanie. No George Clooney. He looks like Old Man Logan with Gandalf's nose.
I think if I were to do a spin on this version of Catwoman, I would replace the lightning and give here a kinda were-panther background. You could then have some fun stuff with Skincrawler, maybe he was also a were-animal of some sort, maybe his transformation went wrong (he's half wolf or tiger or something), and his space suit is actually a life support suit he can't take off.
I don't think even Chris Bachalo could get me to pick this up. My favorite Catwoman era is the Will Pfifer/David Lopez issues with the Adam Hughes covers.
There was going to be a follow-up comic looking at the future life of Ebony the Cat, who developed a secret career as a well respected accountant specialising in estate planning. However, super Streaky's agent complained and the plans were nixed.
0:40 Oop- I'm guilty to be one of them 🤣 rewritting and redesigning several characters for fun, on/off comics - but the Catwoman I wanted to reintrepret was Catwoman (2004) (especially her outfit) as ever since watching the movie the idea of her character gaining cat-like powers through death was so interesting to me (now I'm scared to share more cuz others seems to not like the adaptation) and for me, the movie was def peek camp and guilty pleasure for me 😂🐈⬛️ Currently my reimagine of her is similar to Moon Knight's situation (The time I thought of this idea was before I found out about Moon Knight 😆 and this version of Patience is lesser of having the conditions of DID and more on being socially anxious/awkward) lesser being haunted by Khonshu and fully being possessed by Sekhmet (Egyptian goddess of war, destruction, pestilence, and flames) giving an interesting constrast personalitywise to the more cowardly Patience. So kinda like 2 souls in one body situation, because Sekhmet thought Patience had already died when she possessed her (queue the infamous sewer scene with maybe Midnight transferring Sekhmet's soul into Patience's body to save her 🤣) so when the latter sleeps the other will be awake and vice versa. - I thought it would be so interesting if you'd have scenes of Patience just blacking in and out in mid of the story and then waking up to her surrounded by jewellery/antiques, hair chopped-off, or her apartment messed around, not recalling any of it until maybe Sekhmet was caught on the acts when Patience somehow stayed awake and they talk through reflection/reflective surfaces (Again, like Moon Knight 😅 I swear this was a coincedence) 🦁 Why did the goddess want to possess her body in the first place, you ask?... well idk, I haven't gotten that far yet (maybe she had a little beef with her twin sister, Bastet 🐈⬛ and the other Egyptian gods, wanting revenge) or simply just curious on living as a mortal in the modern times~ 🐈 Edit: On a fun note I thought if Patience were to meet Selena Kyle, maybe they would have an issue about being copycat to Selina's Catwoman, whilst she would actually be Calico (inspired by cats with a distinctive tri-color coat pattern, usually black, white, and orange) because I designed her to have her hair and eye colors being mixed with segments when both of them are awake and fighting 🐾
Yeah Stan Lee was a creative guy but he sucked at writing female characters (even by standards of the 60s). All the female heroes he wrote in marvel were “fashion models” as their day job and obsessed with finding a cute boyfriend. His Catwoman is actually shows some growth (but not much)
Honestly, the concept is pretty interesting. I'd be up for a modern reimagining of this reimagining, with better dialogue and a more cohesive motivation for Catwoman.
She could have green lanturn so easy, it were they didn't go with it. I would have worked with the green lightning, hal jordan being her father, green!!!!. Also why does Hal look like that??
I enjoyed "Stan Lee's Just Imagines", but I really like your ideas better. I'd enjoy a book about Ebony, where she's the Hero and Joanie is a side effect of Ebony getting powers. 😉
I got this only for Bachalo's art, but the Wonder Woman one is really good. In defense of these specials, like the Marvel What If stories, they are intended as only one shots.
as much as i love this idea, i can't help but feel the whole "stan lee created this" is a revisionist history, to remove Jack Kirby from the amount of work and effort he did to promote Stan as the real mascot of Marvel. Just my perception, considering there is no "what if jack kirby made ____" series similar to Stan.
I get why you compared her costume to the one used in the Batman tv series, but to me, it looks too much like Black Widow's. Especially with the series of circles making up the belt, which I have seen Widow wear in multiple versions.
Black Widow's famous outfit was reportedly in homage to Miss Fury (while many argue Emma Peel) but still, look at Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt and Lee Merriwether's Catwoman outfit in Batman '66.
I liked the semi mystical getting powers from being chewed on by cats thing from the second Batman movie, you got to sort of have your cake and eat it, because it might be 'just' psychological (which is so right for a Batman villain, they're mostly 'I have powers cause my brain broke' folks). But having a neat swap/connection to her cat is a great feature, a potential strength and weakness. I'd make it so her powers or even life were also linked to her cat. Maybe she thinks she's only got ten or so years to live (the cat is maybe 8?), and gets really reckless and becomes a criminal in order to get her life's goals done in time? Always thought Cat woman has more mileage and spookiness in her than just super-trained burglar 🙂
I think an interesting idea for a revival of this universe would be to have more Well known Marvel writers occasionally coming out of retirement to add to this universe every so often
I kinda dig it, wouldnt mind seeing it revisited and expanded on to help it get its own identity. But Im also a sucker for weird new takes on characters lol.
Between the cat powers and the connection to the fashion industry, this comic seems like it might have been the inspiration for the Halle Berry Catwoman movie.

Jack Kirby created Darkseid, Stan Lee "recreated" already existing IP to no success...
Please do all of just imagine
as much as i love this idea, i can't help but feel the whole "stan lee created this" is a revisionist history, to remove Jack Kirby from the amount of work and effort he did to promote Stan as the real mascot of Marvel. Just my perception, considering there is no "what if jack kirby made ____" series similar to Stan.
I think the most appropriate cat power side affect would be if she got the zoomies and had to run around the roof tops of gotham at 3am
3:00 Why does she only have 3 giant toes?
Love the bob Sasha!
I kinda dig it, wouldnt mind seeing it revisited and expanded on to help it get its own identity. But Im also a sucker for weird new takes on characters lol.
The comic style is reay leaning towards Marvel as only Stan Lee can do this type of comic. We can recognize his style of writing.
Distressed Fashion Hole?? ...what'd you just call me? 10:33 😆
Between the cat powers and the connection to the fashion industry, this comic seems like it might have been the inspiration for the Halle Berry Catwoman movie.
All I know is this is way better than Tom King's take on Catwoman.
This Catwoman costume reminds me of 1970s Black Widow
