This extra channel is exactly what we need! the main channel videos are amazing but to see and understand the more technical details and more in depth explanations are perfect!
Loving it. One of my favorite series on TH-cam. I will say about the overhead concrete: why not just hire the structural engineer? It won't be much of the budget and well worth the piece of mind. A concrete and steel garage of that size with that span--that you're going to be parking on top of doesn't seem like an ideal case for guessing. I'll bet you even save money on materials by not unnecessary overbuilding if you have the calculations done.
Anything worth building is worth overbuilding!! 😁👍If I was to overbuild anything I would overbuild the roof and it's supporting structure, especially if you're going to park a vehicle up there on top of all that concrete. Better to overbuild and not need it than to under build and not have the proper support. 🤔😉
Luckily it is his job/source if income to provide for his family that’s enough motivation for most people to get cracking in the morning. Add in that he obviously loves it also the motivation must come very easily.
If you could leave a section of the rock wall exposed in the final save that would be amazing. Behind a thick plexy glass or something. Put some back lighting. It would be cool to see a piece of the old space in with the new!
@@klaasj7808 Who wants to grow up? I mean, granted, we tend to fetishise youth in modern society, but staying young at heart is absolutely the secret to aging well.
Regarding the concrete, one thing to consider is that concrete loves compression (being pushed together) but hates tension (being pulled apart). If it bows then one side will be in compression and the other side will be in tension - not good. One way to prevent that is to put cables inside the concrete that are bolted to end plates then after the concrete is cured, you tension the cables which then compresses the concrete so the tension side will be just less compressed rather than going into tension. This is called a Post-tensioned Slab.
I'm really glad you've made a second channel, as an engineer myself I love to see projects in detail and found that was lacking on the main channel. I completely understand why it's like that and you have to appeal to the masses with quick pace entertainment. It makes me laugh sometimes how you complete a task in a few frames that in reality would have taken hours and many wouldn't appreciate how much goes into each task. I'm sure many of us would like to see the planning, technical details, problem solving etc of all the projects and not just the garage/tunnel project. All the best
He's acting like he's just going to "wing it" when building that roof; as if he doesn't even have an engineer stamped and approved plan or blueprint. I sure hope that's just a bit that he's carrying on and not actually going to randomly build that roof without actually crunching the numbers on the spans and calculate the static and dynamic loads, etc. Just like the roof of a metal building: except not only does it have to hold snow loads-- it has to hold up cars parked on top of it nearly all the time. So I agree-- I would love to see the "plans" on the roof design so we can critique it. Because he keeps saying this is a "secrete tunnel"; which to me means that there is no inspector and he has no approved plans. I sure hope this isn't the case. This is not something you want to build by guessing.
Back in an old tunnel video he said something along the lines of "Its better to ask for forgiveness than for permission". So yea, guess showing final results are more colins way of doing it than paperwork beforehand lol
I'm not really sure how it is over in Britain but I know here in the United States you don't have to have a permit for anything underground as long as it does not show to the public they don't care ...... But then again that's just Texas and California as far as I'm aware at the moment
@@HaroldKuilmanno, he actually has permission for this one 🤯 Admittedly he started the first part of the tunnels THEN got permission, but he does now have permission. He covered it during one of the original tunnel series videos
I’m really liking this different video format. It’s great to watch all the noodling you guys do for every step. I’ve been watching the main channel since the Wall of Death. Gunna watch every video on this one too!
Get one of those metal frames that you usually transport glass in. Use one of those to put your metalsheets in, then you have them standing up instead of laying down and taking up so much space. Also every time you get a delivery of steel you lift the frame up of the hole and put everything in it then back down again. Will save you a bunch of time and much safer!:)
That would be determined by how much that lift Boom can lift while extended. The further it is extended; the less weight can be lifted in each cycle. Metal gets heavy in a hurry !! It would be an absolute disaster if the load pulled the lift Boom over !! He has very little maneuver room, so if the lift Boom falls over..... .
@@jimbayler4277 Those JCB's are fitted with a lift limiter. When you go over the amount the boom won't extend or go up, so you won't pull the wheels of the ground. IF it has been calibrated correctly...
@@Dirkxke: It's that IF that makes me nervous. I am a contractor but admit I don't have much knowledge on JCB's/Gradalls. My eyes just see a giant lever with a lot of weight. I have never dumped anything over on its side, but I have lifted wheels off the ground and made myself a bit nervous. Never "have to change your underwear" nervous.... but we'll just say that part of me was not happy at all. Good to know that they have a load-limiter.
I think the way you are doing with the main channel and this channel is absolutely spot on, main it's more of an overall, general picture and spaced out updates, and this one is updated more often with details that we all love to see. Regardless, they don't cannibalise one another, they complement each other and I love it. I'm so invested in this whole tunnel arc (pun intended), I which I could do something like this in my house (can't, property laws won't allow me to do it here, unfortunately).
Your main channel videos and these videos compliment each other perfectly. You're doing a fantastic job with them. Thank you so much for all the effort. It's hard enough to build anything, let alone anything this massive. But to do that while also recording the progress, talking us through things to make sure we understand what's going on, and also getting it all edited, uploaded, and everything else? Geez! The amount of effort is staggering and it's super impressive. Thank you so much! Just inspires me to work even harder.
This is great! I love seeing the thought process and less glamorous parts of the project playing out. And the Look Mum No Computer cover is an absolute banger too!
Colin, I’ve just watched both videos this evening over here in the US and I have to say that you’ve got the balance between both channels absolutely spot on - it’s perfection! Dare I say it, it’s almost like you know what you’re doing 😉😂 Lovely stuff my friend and keep up the excellent work!!!
The vibe is just right Collin. You just being you working on this project is fantastic. Try not to worry so much about everyone telling you if you're hitting it spot on. you have 1M views on this video at this moment at 10 hours in. You've nailed it mate. Keep it up and enjoy it!
you should make sure you leave a section of rock wall visible in the final version of your room. Looks so cool with the lighting from below. Put a nice piece of glass in front of it!
Absolutely love the setup between the videos on each channel. The main channel update video may have featured footage from other videos on the 2nd channel, but the arrangement was different, and you kept some footage exclusive to the main channel. Perfect flow if you ask me. Thank you for all your hard work, effort, and obvious dedication to making these the most enjoyable they can be for us fans.
For the driveway slab, you may want to use a composite floor system (called Comfloor in NZ, not sure about UK). Its a corrugated steel sheet system that gets propped in place the concrete poured over. The steel sheet takes the tension allowing less concrete, longer spans between supports, no cracking and less sag than classic reinforced slabs. It was originally designed for use in multilevel buildings and is very common here in parking garages.
Nice! I think the lift and "roof" opening is probably the hardest part to this. Especially if you want to park a extra car on the top. A Double door roof system, one for the roof, one for the container; so nobody falls through accidentally lol
When it’s your secret tunnel but most the world knows about it because it’s #31 on trending. It’s awesome to see you doing so well, what a ways we have come from Mr blobby
The four letter word that came to my mind was 'gulp'! Foundations generally require dirt/soil/rock to be underneath them, not flapping about in mid air.
For something like this, I would expect you to cast RC retaining walls to all sides (possibly underpinning the house and garage) with pad foundations for the steel columns, and set up a grid of beams to support a composite slab using reentrant profile sheets to keep the weight down, then cast an RC slab for the basement floor with a tanking system taking groundwater to a sump to be pumped out. You could still line it with steel to keep the aesthetics matching the tunnels.
I think this being such a big build, the 2nd channel feels like the main progression, and the main channel is more of a refresher over the bits we watched previously, which is quite nice!
The vibe of the videos are absolutely perfect. I was worried that the main channel video was going to just repeat the same content from the update videos, but that wasn't the case at all! There were so many new and interesting things included, that made the main channel video feel new and refreshing. I especially loved the bit where Freddy visited, as well as the little portion about covering the wooden plate with astroturf. The second channel videos are engaging, genuine, and just legitimately fun! And as always, your editing is absolutely impeccable. I love it!
Consider adding a sump crock. Water flows downhill. I see the crack drain on the main channel but just in case you won't regret putting a sump well in! This would allow for mechanical water removal. Passive drain vs mechanical drain. Even a 5 gallon bucket would work. I see an inevitable looming disaster in the form of water intrusion. Right under the cars park position would be the best. Wet car from rain... water goes to the drain! Love your work, love you're crazy genius!
After few thousands years some archeologists will dig it out and will be astonished by the precision of this structure, considering it's purpose as a temple or a tomb.
I flippen love these videos. I think the two channels are great , both have their own vibe and are distinct enough that it doesn't feel like they take away from the other. I love hearing the thought process, seeing how things get planned out and generally get a better sense of the old furze. Amazing.
This is a mind blowing undertaking, absolutely awesome to watch. I admire your can do attitude Colin. I can't help remembering Fred Dibnah as you construct this fantastic bunker of an undertaking . I think he would have been as enthusiastic about this project as you are. Absolutely compelling eccentricity at it's best. It's like Grand Designs mixed with James Bond and The Great Escape. It sparks the imagination of possibilities. Brilliant!
@leonardgore7948 he's mentioned this in a previous video, for the bunker he got planning permission for the tunnel he didn't get the permission until after he started building it. He said it's because planning permission needs detailed plans which he doesn't know until he's started e.g pipe locations etc. He did get the permission after the fact though I believe one council level did object.
I love the way this channel shows more in-depth elements of what you're doing with your tunnel. I've, of course, enjoyed the frenetic energy of your main channel, but seeing the work you've done in this channel is so exciting.
Hard to believe the original bunker is 8 years old already! Love the extra detail and behind the scenes troubleshooting, definitely keep this series going.
Getting the balance and the vibe spot on Dude. Just a bit of info you might find useful. I've just built a garage at the end of my upside-down house. The garage is level with the lower floor and I wanted the flat roof to be useable as a patio terrace area. The garage is 7.5m x 7.2m internal and I used a cast concrete slab. Given it was structural and self supporting span, I employed an engineer to do the calculations, which ended up requiring the rebarred concrete to be 11 inches thick. If you've got the headroom, I consider using steelwork to carry most of the load, especially if you intend parking on the top of it. The concrete can be much thinner if the unsupported spans are reduced and the thickness values are exponentially proportional.
In regards to what you were asking at the start, I love these addons to the main videos. I like the fast paced nature of your main channel videos, but these more technical videos, making measurements, checking angles I find equally entertaining and fascinating. Keep up the awesome work!
I highly recommend investing in a hoist pinch clamp. Used them all the time working in a the shop. The ones we used for 3/8 or 1/2" plate made it so much easier to put in our. racks. Make it easier lowering your sheets in the ground. Keep up the awesome work and projects! 👍
This channel has a lot more in depth explaining than the main channel which i quite enjoy! Definitely keep this channel for behind the scenes explanations on main channel projects. Its awesome!
Heck I wouldn't mind just listening to you ramble and dig with the boys for a couple hours. I like the long form videos for this channel. Like a free channel with less production and just more raw fun!
I watched the first channel video this morn, and now I've just watched this one, and I like the vibe you have going on for these secondary videos where they are slower and more detailed than the primary channel videos. Primary channel gives the big picture stuff which isn't in the secondary and secondary gets into the weedy details which isn't in the primary. I dig it :)
The main video absolutely felt like a new video compared with the previous 2nd channel video. So well edited as well. Incredibly well done on making them all so interesting!
I agree that would be very cool however I think the problem is that all the gaps between the walls and the rock will be getting filled in with concrete.
You alright Colin, I noticed how well your doing with the videos! They’re full of info on how you have done things. I’m constantly in awe at what you are able to accomplish and how brilliant it turns out in the end! Beautiful job! Can’t wait to see the rest! Thanks for the in depth description of the plans!
Looking great. One point that you're probably already working on but I wanted to mention was reinforced concrete. There's a lot you can do with rebar and prestressed rebar to add a lot of strength to your spanning structures without needing a lot of extra steel. Cheers
I must say, it's fun being one of the "Second Channel People"! Watching the process move along and seeing what it takes is turning out to be very interesting and entertaining!
I'm going to start something similar very soon. You make me smile to see another like me and you do great job .. when I tell people what I'm up too I get looks like doubt or lack of understanding then here you are already showing something done like my plan .. Keep it up your amazing ..
As a fellow Delorean owner, I’m always glad to see enthusiasm in including the car in projects like these. A full turntable may be more sturdy and less moving parts, but individual casters for each wheel would allow you to replace or work on the system more easily.
Steady on ol'chap me boy. Keep up the hard work. I personally am a fan of the spread out content. It keeps your main channel concise and to the point, but those of us who want more have this channel to fill in. I think it also makes it feel like your posting content more often. I for one like it.

Love seeing the problem solving! That wiggle wiggle bar tacked to the wall sheets to bend them back to the wall frame was really an awesome solution. I love watching the process of people like Colin, and seeing the creative and genius ideas.
I'm Not sure if you will ever understand how much you inspire me. Just in terms of patience. I don't rush things. I think them through and make sure I do them right. Because of you. Thank you Colin.
Colin, the vibe is perfect! Love how you're going into more technical details which you can't really afford to do on the main channel. Love it mate, and it would be amazing if you made videos like these on the 2nd channel for every project you do.
The two videos compliment each other so well! I felt like I gathered so much new information from the main channel video that I never got in the first two update videos. You are doing such a great job with this content! keep it up.
The pacing and editing of the second channel is spot on, especially the feeling of major tangible progress but with the right amount of detail discussion of problem solving included. It’s a hard balance to strike on such a massive project but you’ve nailed it here.
Keep both channels this one is good for those of us that like the details and how you solve the problems you come across , truly inspiring what you're doing
I am loving all these videos. What an amazing project. Just a little thought for you lifting your steel sheets down with your slings, this can be quite fiddley and awkward. However, you can get proper lifting device for this called a Plate Clamp. Much easier to use and safer. Cheers for the Mining T-shirt which I received yesterday. Keep up the incredible work Colin.
i saw the main channel one before i heard you asked for it in this video, and i was thinking to myself how awesome you have balanced the videos out because i was expecting to rewatch what i've already seen, but it was great. so many new moments and/or angles, as well as top notch editing ofc. in my opinion you have struck a great balance.
I once told a local builder that I would volunteer my labor if they would teach me some of the knowledge that you are demonstrating on your channel. I wish I could have found you during my 20's. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
This channel is spot on Colin. Love seeing the slightly more laid back (didn't think it was possible!) and the additional content is awesome. Keep it up and good luck with the rest of the garage!
I'd love to see candid interviews with all the neighbours lol The person walking by at 15:35 walking their dog as they figure out how to get the sheets of steel down into the cave made me wonder that :D Awesome channel
I'm enjoying these videos and still enjoyed the main channel video today. There was enough new information (specifically, how you covered up the hole!) in the main channel video to make it worth watching both. I think you've got it just right Colin, thank you!
When I watched these vids a few years ago when you first started the tunnel this is what I imagined in my head. You’re actually doing it. Your videos are ADD fuel.
Colin, i highly recommend getting a structural engineer to review your plans and provide feedback on what you need to do to make the driveway structural system safe and robust. You might need additional bracing/ support or might not. If this were an electrical project, i could assist. Love the videos and love everything you've done so far! Keep up the good work 😁
This second channel gives vibes of the old day videos like we’re just there hanging out, which is a great vibe, although I do appreciate the production of the main channel as well! Hearing that the bunker is already 8 years old was crazy. Time flies!
I'm really liking these more in depth videos. They definitely don't take anything away form the main channel and add so much more value to the build. Keep up the great work.
These definitely feel district from the main channel stuff and it's nice to get an additional sense for things behind the scenes as it were. Also, always nice to see the little shout-outs in these as well!
I really like the way you're approaching your videos for this second channel. I love seeing the videos on your first channel, but seeing a deeper and slower dive into your project here is really cool to see. It's a much different perspective, and I really appreciate it!
I'm so glad for you being able to make all this cool stuff and if you don't mind me putting in my two cents, I'd like to say that this second channel of yours is a really great complement to your other channel. Your main channel videos feels more fast paced and to the point. But my guilty pleasure is watching hours long TH-cam videos, preferably many parts each on a project. Whether it be restorations or builds of vehicles, buildings or similar. If you were to put out more detailed longer videos where I'd get to learn a thing or two from a pro, I'd sure sit there, with a beer and popcorn, watching with great excitement a Saturday night.

I'll go you one better. Don't pour concrete. Pour resin. Make everything except the steel supports transparent.
@@stonefish98 yeah Colin could use epoxy to fill in the section to give more strength and in bed some LEDs in the back

Like in bridge-making.
This man concretes
Well, the tendons must be installed in cable ducts for that to work. And then after tensioning, the ducts are sometimes grouted.
dang this is really some concrete advice huh
We should push are concretes together
I'm really glad you've made a second channel, as an engineer myself I love to see projects in detail and found that was lacking on the main channel. I completely understand why it's like that and you have to appeal to the masses with quick pace entertainment. It makes me laugh sometimes how you complete a task in a few frames that in reality would have taken hours and many wouldn't appreciate how much goes into each task. I'm sure many of us would like to see the planning, technical details, problem solving etc of all the projects and not just the garage/tunnel project. All the best
Also I'd love to know a price breakdown for materials, gas, wire, disks etc if that's not too intrusive.

I was thinking the same! It’s like pulling teeth in some councils
Approved? 😅 I have a feeling this is a "better ask for forgiveness then ask for permission" kind of deal 😂
@@HaroldKuilmanno, he actually has permission for this one 🤯
Admittedly he started the first part of the tunnels THEN got permission, but he does now have permission.

Wow, eight years!! It’s been so fun to watch though; You, Rick, and Tom have definitely been a go to for a fun time and great adventure!
When he said that I couldn't believe it
Colin, I’ve just watched both videos this evening over here in the US and I have to say that you’ve got the balance between both channels absolutely spot on - it’s perfection! Dare I say it, it’s almost like you know what you’re doing 😉😂
Lovely stuff my friend and keep up the excellent work!!!
The vibe is just right Collin. You just being you working on this project is fantastic. Try not to worry so much about everyone telling you if you're hitting it spot on. you have 1M views on this video at this moment at 10 hours in. You've nailed it mate. Keep it up and enjoy it!
Yes exactly - and I'm sure people are watching these videos from start to finish, not just dropping off after 30 seconds
Loving the vibe. Reminds me of the SV Seeker videos.
you should make sure you leave a section of rock wall visible in the final version of your room. Looks so cool with the lighting from below. Put a nice piece of glass in front of it!
for that proper cave man feel that would do the trick ... but if you want a more high techy vibe then it's not going to happen ;)
That would be awesome
How funny would a normal house window down there be
I think he puts concrete behind all the walls
@@caderidley2309 lol now that would be on-brand for Colin.
In the US it's called Q decking. (regardless of manufacturer).
19:50 when you said the Bunker is 9 years old I was in shock. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. Awesome project!!!
This here, It can't be 9 years. It feels like yesterday just after a pulse jet and a massive firework display :)

Yes, "epic" is a good word to describe your project and the videos are hugely fun to watch. You are also an excellent presenter. Thank you.
The four letter word that came to my mind was 'gulp'! Foundations generally require dirt/soil/rock to be underneath them, not flapping about in mid air.
@@mb-3faze I believe that Colin pumps concrete underneath the steel and behind the vertical steel plate like in the hallways.
Colin I love how you guys clearly have fun working and evolving the projects!
Onward!
I love it!
I feel this is the nuts and bolts of the project and the main channel is the showcase. Works very well in my opinion 👌
@@tgenders agreed
Consider adding a sump crock. Water flows downhill. I see the crack drain on the main channel but just in case you won't regret putting a sump well in! This would allow for mechanical water removal. Passive drain vs mechanical drain. Even a 5 gallon bucket would work. I see an inevitable looming disaster in the form of water intrusion. Right under the cars park position would be the best. Wet car from rain... water goes to the drain! Love your work, love you're crazy genius!

These update episodes are a fantastic addition to the main ones.. LOVING THE BUILD SO FAR,MATE!

How do you get planning permission?
Love all the extra coverage on this channel. Your neighbours must be pretty awesome! I bet they all want secret tunnels now.
If he has a pub in the build, I'm sure there will be requests for personal connecting tunnels to the "speak-easy"!

I watched the first channel video this morn, and now I've just watched this one, and I like the vibe you have going on for these secondary videos where they are slower and more detailed than the primary channel videos. The main video absolutely felt like a new video compared with the previous 2nd channel video. So well edited as well. Incredibly well done on making them all so interesting!

I think it would be really cool to have a glass window at some point to see the bare rock - gives you a sense of how deep you are in the room!
I fear it would eventually get dirty on the other side and you wouldn’t be able to clean it
Have it clip in on the outside. When it gets dirty you can just remove the whole sheet and clean it.@@christravisedgar
I agree that would be very cool however I think the problem is that all the gaps between the walls and the rock will be getting filled in with concrete.
I’m sure a square metre of rock could be framed out with formwork to keep concrete away. However building regs are another matter.

After watching this I really feel that the two series complement each other extremely well. Good work Colin!
