  • The story of Bagua Zhang was produced and released domestically in China in around the year 2020. It features four lengthy episodes covering different topics regarding the history and practice of Bagua Zhang along with various interviews.
I have translated, subtitled and dubbed this series and have also added relevant information for the international community to enjoy. I will be releasing it in smaller episodes for ease of viewing. Following this, I have some follow up interviews and videos that I will film and produce regarding the topic of Bagua Zhang and its history.
    Dong Haichuan Part 2
In this episode we look at Dong Haichuan's art of Bagua Zhang itself.

Thank you Mu Shin for the excellent story of Baqua Zhang Dong Haichuan. I am a disciple of Wong Jackman (Tai Chi and Hsing-i) since 1973 and his lineage led me to Su Lutang (Baqua) in 2020.

This is a fascinating series. Thank you for the translation. It is interesting how the history is entwined with so much myth which usually colours it nicely and is fun to read, see , hear, yet when one wants to hear what can be discerned as actual historical facts or as close to it as possible, such enmeshing just leads to mess. The history of Baguazhang is interesting yet not clear. One thing is certain; no one practising and perfecting their art alone will emerge fully developed because you need a partner to train with to not only hone your skill but in the case of inventing a new art, to discover its weaknesses. So Dong Hai Chuan could not have come down from the mountain all powerful like the Monkey King.
So then he becomes a murderer/ assassin - becoming a eunuch seems a bit drastic, then in a fit of incredible compassion this assassin saves the life of a child playing on a roof !
    Playing on a roof?
Then we are literally into a flight of fancy with the classical peking opera style kung fu film acrobatics, which while cool in the films and fun to watch, cannot be taken seriously here. Very good that you pointed out the factual elements. I have always found the claims of Dong Hai Chuan's skill and reputed fighting abilities to be grossly exaggerated in good old fashioned style but again fun to listen to. It's just when you hear similar stories in similar ways with different names you start to question their voracity.
Three years - even three intensive years is nowhere near enough time to learn an internal martial art even for a gifted student with plenty of martial skill and coordination.

I think at long as one keeps their logical brain working, then hearing the myths and legends are part of the fun of learning the art

@@MuShinMartialCulture Oh yes indeed. I love the myths and legends too. It's just when they are included in a serious documentary as if real I feel it takes away from the beauty, skill and effectiveness of TCMA

Sun Lu Tang is one of the greatest internal martial artists, and he is very humble. Hence, in his book 'Explanation of the True Martial Essence,' he stated that four masters have achieved an emptiness state without mentioning himself and his students. He has also published books on how to achieve those forms. Moreover, he has taught many students, including his son, how to achieve it. However, the history of his achievement and the practices of those forms were disrupted during the revolutions in China. The way of developing human ability safely and sound is gone and need to be re-discovered all over again.

Well, they arent gone and lost, there are people who were alive before, during and after the revolutions in China, such as my teacher, and they dont have amnesia thankfully. There are MANY like this in fact.

I've never thought that the Chicken Claw Rui which I saw at some pictures in an old magazine were Baguazhang weapons. Perhaps these type of weapons when used in fighting may be more blood messy than the Deer Horn Knives.

Very interesting how Dong Haichuan and Ip Man seem to be portrayed as these invincible masters. I don't mind hearing about all of their accomplishments, but I think hearing about their failures (at least to me) makes them feel "human".

The only way he could be employed in Prince Su's mansion was to be a eunuch. This was the case for all such employees. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have passed the initial examination to get this position. The idea that he would magically hide this, and at the same time live in Prince Su's mansion amongst the other eunuchs is highly highly improbable. Also, most records state that he was a eunuch.
