    Nice clean & efficient amplifiers. They are used in the DAS Convert 12A Line array speakers. The smaller board for the HF and the larger (medium) board for the 12inch mid range driver. The issue I have with these amplifiers is if (or should I say when) the amp fails, most of the time, the ICE ic also gets damaged. These ic's are not available. So you end up having to purchase a complete new module. I know the specs show lots of protection, but the fact is nothing is 100% protected. Abuse it enough & something will fail. When it does.... there's no repairing these.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback Arthur! Have you heard that these have a high failure rate?

    • @arthureschner9319
      @arthureschner9319 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KissAnalog Sorry I think my comment makes them sound unreliable, which wasn't my intention. They have an average failure rate similar to any other. The point I was trying to make is, when they fail, you can't repair it.

    I put together a multi channel Icepower amp to power some active three way floor standing speakers I built. The amp uses the Icepower 1500S power supply and 4 Icepower 400A class D amp modules. There is also a built in DSP unit. The amplifier does everything I wanted it to do and it does it well. No complaints at all. It does get a little warm but nothing that would need forced air cooling. Icepower makes some really great products and they are very DIY friendly. It's nice that Icepower will sell their products to the DIY community that just want to build a nice amplifier for themselves and not only sell to big commercial customers. So my hat is off to Icepower for letting me build an audiophile grade amplifier and not have to spend a gazillion dollars purchasing a ready made commercial offering that use the same basic components.

      @manamimnm ปีที่แล้ว

      What DSP unit did you use? Excuse my question, please.

    • @iamjackalope
      @iamjackalope ปีที่แล้ว

      @@manamimnm No problem. I used the Dayton Audio DSP408. The one I got for my amp project worked fine but a second one I got for a car audio install was a piece of junk. So take it with a grain of salt. It doesn't appear that their quality control is all that good.

    I use one for my sub woofer, set to turn on with a signal.
    They are very easy to use, once you get the JST connectors.
    I too was suspicious about the size of the heat-sink, so I used a gap-filling silicone thermal pad between the bottom of the PCB and the case.
    It has worked very well for a few years now.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John! I do wish the connectors were different, but I’ll make them work;) So far, it does seem to run cool enough, but I’ll put it through some more paces;)

    I'm using these Eddie, superb amps! I use the higher output amps, I think it's 1kW per amp so they run very cool with low distortion. Have them about a year now with no problems driven by a tube preamp.

    • @dantheman1998
      @dantheman1998 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you know what would be interesting! To see if the amp keeps the tube distortion or does it get filtered out?

    • @mosfet500
      @mosfet500 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dantheman1998 It keeps it, that's the beauty of it. ICE can't differentiate second harmonics from any other signals. Think about it, a guitar with a push pedal has to relay that signal as it gets it or listeners would be very disappointed.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback!! I'm very interested in how this sounds. I have high hopes;) Have you tried driving them with a solid state preamp to compare?

    • @mosfet500
      @mosfet500 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KissAnalog Yes, the sound is relatively neutral, not as warm in SS. I think it comes down to the type of music you like and individual tastes but my ICE amp is a little different at 1kW each channel, it cruses along at my listening levels well below any distortion levels of the lower power amps and never gets more than warm which is why I went with the higher power amp modules. Again, I really think it's what you like in sound, something like a Jfet preamp might please a lot of people too. Incidentally PS audio, for one, is running ICE amps with a 12AU7A preamp stage, it goes for $6k! I haven't heard it but the 12AU7A doesn't have the dynamics of the 6922 tube if you ask me after experimenting with both tubes.
      My preamp is a little different, it's a hybrid running a 6922 into an OPA627 which is on the warm side itself. I'll PM you out a schematic and you can beat it up.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  ปีที่แล้ว

      This makes sense. I'd love to see the schematic. I'm interested in designing a JFET preamp, but then i wonder if a JFET OpAmp would be the way to go?

    Great content, love the channel. 👍
    Currently working with two Icepower 1200AS1 boards myself. They will be driving a pair of surround speakers, Definitive Technology bipolar. The location of these speakers doesn't facilitate the use of cabling. I'm using a set of dual channel 2.4/ 5GHz wifi transmitter/ receivers that output a single-ended (RCA) signal. The 1200AS1 is fully balanced so I'm using a THAT corporation 1646 balanced line driver IC for line level conversion. These boards are way overkill for my power requirements. It’s a temporary solution unti Icepower releases a new board design early 2023. At that time I will use both 1200AS1 boards as my main power amp replacing a Denon integrated unit.

    That ICE Power amp was considered good enough to make it into Jeff Rowland's Model 125 amps. His amp has his own designed and built pre-amp feeding into the ICE amp. It's a nice amp, costs about $3k.

    Thanks! I would hope for around 85% efficiency on a class D amp. Do you know what the max signal input voltage it can handle? In car audio I try to have a signal voltage of 3 to 5 volts. One site you should check out is parts express. They have a pretty nice selection of audio equipment. I just ordered some speaker cabinet kits with a crossover kit. Have you ever thought of crossover builds for the channel?

    If I dove into class D again, it would have to be a quiet amp , and not have a vague, and noisy treble. My class D audio sds-470C amps (2014). had those issues, the ps hum was way too loud. The mids and bass were fine, the treble sounded vague and rolled off. Very load variant.

    Bang & Olufsen makes really nice looking products that are “high tech”, sound pretty good (in a regular hifi way) but tend to be quite low on reliability as per what I have experienced owning some of their products ... as far as sound... not what I consider High End or even in the league of: (Nelson Pass, Threshold, PS Audio, Classe Audio, Audio Research, Esoteric, Krell, Conrad Johnson, Jeff Rowland, Manley, McIntosh, Mark Levinson, etc... to name a few) ... so this little ICEpower is probably cool but I would really be wary about it’s ultimate sound (as is, not super modified by High end manufacturers) and it’s reliability ... I guess I might have to buy one and see for myself but I do own a couple of Nelson Pass designed ACA (Audio Camp Amps) and love them 🤠🤔
