    Thanks for this video. We have a farm in N. Florida and we are looking into Dexter cattle. I appreciate the genetic explanations of the anomolies. It will be helpful when buying cattle. We currently have dairy goats & Kunekune pigs. We have so much lush pasture that we really need to get some cattle to help keep it down and help w keeping parasite loads down in our goats/rotational grazing etc.

      Awesome. They are a great choice. Truly the best beef you can find. We recommend if you get into breeding buy weened heifers so they get to know you and are easy to work with. We bought our first Dexter that was a year old bred and although she doesn’t give us problems she has an attitude lol. And when you get a bull pay for a good one and preferably halter trained. Again our first bull was a 5 year old and never handled and had an attitude. We have a play list of dexter cattle on our channel you can watch. Highly recommend watching our interviews with Mark Chaney in Tennessee where we bought our current bull. He is night and day difference from our first bull and can get him on a halter and move him where we need to. Sounds like you just need some large breed pigs like ours and we will have all the same animals!😃

    This video was really interesting. Thanks!
    Funny side note: My captions were on as the video ran; when the goats were bleating, the caption said it was "applause." The goats loved your presentation. LOL

      That’s funny. They were screaming since we had just left the barn.

    i am slowly, but surely getting my herd away from raising dairy steers to lowlines and dexters. i use my dexter bull to breed the heifers and then ai the cows with lowline except for my girl who was ai as a heifer to a dexter bull. they are easy going and very friendly breeds

    How do ya find the Bulls temperaments are like? We have a few Dexter cows and always AI. But am finding it harder and harder to get good quality straws, plus the pain it is to arrange it to be done. We really want to get a good polled, registered and halterbroke bull. But we haven't had bulls before though I've been around dairy bulls on a farm I used to work for and they were wild and terrifying lol

      I linked one of our recent videos in one of your comments. The bulls are very docile if you get one that has been handled and worked with. The exact opposite of a dairy bull. Where are you located?

    What is the minimum acreage you recommend for dexters?

    • @SweetBriarFarmMichigan
      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan  ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on how much hay you want to buy or put up and the quality of your pasture. 1-2 head per acre is usually the norm if you have good quality pasture. We have 15 head on 6 acres. But we buy a lot of good quality hay.

      Cows do best with a companion. So if you got a weaned young steer and maybe a goat as a companion. I know some people do that.
