Aww! Those Dexter cows are so cute! ❤ We are just getting started on our new land so we have plenty of time to decide which kind of cattle to buy. I love the Highlands and Dexters the best so far. Also learning about A2A2 milk so that might play into our decision as well. Thanks for sharing! ❤
We are bringing our new dwarf home Friday. She is a beauty! Find a breeder that has well tempered cows. Some of ours came from more beef operations that were more hands off and therefore more skittish.
How amazing!! Thank you for sharing this! I need to learn so much about having a cow so when we are able to get one, I can get right into it! Thanks again!
I thought about getting a Dexter cow but they are hard to find here. Loved your video. I have been in your situation, trying to train a cow to milking and having to chase the cow around. Persistence is key to success.
They aren’t very common around here but we recently found out there are a couple herds of dexters relatively close to us. We are really looking forward to milking a jersey again!
I have been working on training my Dexter to be a milk cow. She is on day 4 and doing great staying in the stanchion. I am looking to the milk. 👍 She is bred to a Jersey Bull. Looking forward to next Spring.
Thank you so much for this video! It is perfect timing for us. We are trying to decide what kind of milk cow to get. A dexter looks like a good option.
If you want easy get a jersey bottle/bucket calf. If you get a dexter get one that the breeder spends a lot of time with. A few of ours have quite the attitude and we have no desire to try and train. None are mean by any means but they would require a lot more work than Jo.
Hey my comments are working now. Great video as always Jolene is coming along very nice she will be giving you a gallon of milk before you know it. I really enjoy your content i learn so much from every video you guys post. I know you have a little jersey cow but do you plan on getting any more jerseys or sticking with just Dexter. Thanks for being us along for the journey..
Well that’s a good question. We might get another jersey or another bull to breed Mr. P offspring to. We will likely be doing less of the produce production beginning next year. We are not sure yet…
For future reference, better to go from behind than beside with the milk machine as they can't kick backwards ;) Probably save stressing her out with all the restraints.
You first! I don’t think there’s any 100% safe way to milk a cow. There’s always risk working with large animals, especially when they’re in a new situation. If I have to take a kick from a cow I’d prefer to take while she’s winding up on the side rather than full force directly behind her. There’s more than one way to milk a cow, I’m glad you found something that works for you. But they can (and do) kick straight back.
Yes. Get a Nubian from proven milk lines. From watching your videos it seems like there would be better forage for goats too. They love the brushy stuff. Fawn was producing 1.5 gallons a day when she was milking her 2 times a day.
@@7kinhomestead of course you will need a goat for your goat. Then you will need to breed them so you will need a buck so then you will need a buddy for him. Then your wife and kids will want to keep the babies and they will want to breed them. Then you will need an unrelated buck. That is interesting tool to make her immobilized. Can it be used for goats? I have a problem goat. I am giving up. Your patience and determination was rewarded.
The cow can’t kick would be too big for a goat. But I imagine something like that would work for a goat. We fashioned a couple dog leashes to our goat milk stand and strapped them to the back legs of a goat before to stop them from jumping around on the milk stand.
Fawn is impressive! Beautiful goat! I'm intrigued by your Dexter's. I can definitely see the value of them as a dual purpose breed & Jo is a very nice looking cow. I'm curious about the personality of the Dexter breed; Jo had been handled a fair amount after you got her but she doesn't appear to be very mild mannered. Do they tend to be quite a bit higher strung than say a Jersey? Would bottle feeding the heifer calves mellow them to alleviate that? Thank you for a very interesting video! God bless!
Bottle feeding would definitely make them more personable. Not too many people bottle feed dexters. I would say 90% of breeders we have bought from do not milk them. A few show them but we usually buy the ones that “need work” lol. This video might answer your question about personalities 😄 th-cam.com/video/sCeWzZeIAOE/w-d-xo.html
